The 56 Most Popular Memoirs of the Past Decade

Posted by Cybil on December 13, 2023

If you’ve acquired a taste for memoirs, then you already know how engrossing this particular format can be. The book-length first-person narrative is inherently fascinating, somehow. It’s the story of a life, by the person who lived it, usually delivered in some interesting and artful way.

We’ve gathered here the most popular memoirs on Goodreads from the past 10 years, in order from the top down. In other words, these are the memoirs most read, rated, and reviewed by your fellow Goodreads regulars over the past decade. Each has earned an overall rating of 3.5 stars or better.

You’ll find some dishy celebrity memoirs here, along with more literary books that have broken through to the pop culture mainstream. The memoir is a famously flexible format, and many of the authors here introduce bold variations on the standard autobiography.

Some spotlight items, in no particular order: Author and journalist Ta-Nehisi Coates’ incisive Between the World and Me blends memoir elements with American history, all formatted as an extended letter to his son. Michelle Zauner won a Goodreads Choice Award in 2021 for Crying in H Mart, concerning grief, indie rock, and Korean food. Nature lovers will want to read up on Helen Macdonald’s deeply spiritual and utterly unique H is for Hawk.

Another cool thing is that you’ll find some of the planet’s funniest people on this list. Amy Poehler, Trevor Noah, Ali Wong, and the late, great Matthew Perry bring humor to even the darkest moments of life—a difficult and inspirational thing to do.

Göksel Jennette's memoir set the bar so high. That book was flawless.

message 2: by Janina (new)

Janina Why does Ali Wong's book deserve to be on there twice?

message 3: by Law (new)

Law Where's the one by Jada Pinkett Smith? I've never even heard of some memoirs on this list but they look promising.

E.M. Williams Janina wrote: "Why does Ali Wong's book deserve to be on there twice?"

My guess is it's an error, but it would be great if they fixed it so another book got the spot. Lists make books so easy to find.

kimberly Instead of (or at least in addition to) seeing "most popular memoirs" which tend to be mostly celebrity memoirs, I would love to see a list of memoirs worth reading (of which there are many) that aren't celebrity memoirs to help support smaller, more independent authors.

Agreed.

Bailey When Breath Becomes Air is an AMAZING book!!!!

message 8: by Judi (new)

Judi Drama, An Actor's Education by John Lithgow. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to the author read his memoir - what rich experiences he had in a truly interesting life!!

message 9: by LaceyGoodBooks (new)

LaceyGoodBooks I have two of these books

message 10: by Allen (new)

Allen I have read 7. B Spears was interesting as well as Kenan Thompson. C Fisher was revealing!

message 11: by M (new)

M E I read 7 of these books. I think there are also other really great ones that could have been added like the ones from Maya Angelou, Nelson Mandela, and Danny Trejo

message 12: by Eliana (new)

Eliana Vanessa Agreed ^^^^

message 13: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Thomas David Grohl would be an excellent inclusion to this list.

message 14: by Ann (new)

Ann I've read 12. Wong duplication error should be fixed to make room for one more — such as Being Henry (serious book, not humor, BTW).

message 15: by Milena (new)

Milena And “Surrender” by Bono?

message 16: by Kayla (new)

Kayla McGrew Dave Grohl and my personal favorite, PARIS HILTON! Her memoir was amazing and so captivating. She is so much more than some party girl heiress! I love her after reading it.

message 17: by Erika (new)

Erika Boncz Dave Grohl’s book was amazing!!! Loved that he narrated it for the audio book

message 18: by Debbie (new)

Debbie Solito by Javier Zamora.

message 19: by Lisa (new)

Lisa I've read 24. My faves are:
When Breath Becomes Air
This is Going to Hurt
Just Mercy

Shoe Dog by Phil Knight and Catch and Kill by Ronan Farrow need to be on this list!!! Also, the audio version of Nobody Will Tell You This But Me by Bess Kalb

message 20: by Alex (new)

Alex I'm tired of GR making lists and putting multiple books by the same author on the lists. Pick the best ONE per author and give those 2-3 other spaces to someone who deserves more readers and recognition!

message 21: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Still Foolin' 'Em by Billy Crystal is a work of art!

message 22: by Lilly (new)

Lilly Potter Jennette’s and Adam’s book where so good (am glad my mum died) and
(this is going to hurt) both book where so beautifully written and incredibly funny.

message 23: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca Caldwell Spare by Prince Harry is hands down the best book I've ever read! Every American should read it to see what life is like for the British Monarchy and a behind-the-scenes view of what it is like to live life like a royal.

message 24: by Elspeth (last edited Dec 20, 2023 02:02PM) (new)

Elspeth Where is Waxing On by Ralph Macchio? Or Michael K. Williams' book?

The idea of having the "most popular of the last 10 years" is useless since clearly all the books that came out in the past year or two are going to be the vast majority What a waste of a list. Just make one on the most popular of 2023 or even the 2020s?

And is "Stay Sexy..." actually a memoir? If it's just a book about the podcast it doesn't really count.

Elspeth Rebecca wrote: "Spare by Prince Harry is hands down the best book I've ever read! Every American should read it to see what life is like for the British Monarchy and a behind-the-scenes view of what it is like to ..."

Eh, we left Britain for a reason. There's no reason why Americans "should" read a book about the British monarchy unless it's for entertainment purposes. Just because Harry married an American doesn't make it any more or less relevant to Americans.

message 26: by Lynn (new)

Lynn Lisa wrote: "David Grohl would be an excellent inclusion to this list."

Agreed.

message 27: by Margaret (new)

Margaret Galbraith Sam Neill’s book not on here was brilliant as was Richard E Grant’s too

message 28: by Vicky (new)

Vicky Maldonado + Heavy by Kiese Laymon - this book got me into memoirs especially if the audio is read by the author.

Also + Dave Grohl memoir

message 29: by Brandi (new)

Brandi Alcock I have read 9 on the list and Viola Davis’s memoir was my favorite, with Michelle Obama’s coming a close second.

message 30: by Nancy (new)

Nancy I’ve read 13 because I enjoy memoirs. I don’t think 2023 was a great year for this genre. I read zero of the books selected for the Choice Awards in this category.

message 31: by Kathi (new)

Kathi Educated by Tara Westover is a must read, especially for educators.

message 32: by Em (new)

Em Monahan Skoff I almost exclusively read memoirs and highly highly recommend, Hunger makes me a modern girl by Carrie Brownstein and The opposite of butterfly hunting by Evanna Lynch.

message 33: by Connie (last edited Dec 31, 2023 06:40PM) (new)

Connie Wish Chanel Miller's Know My Name and Two Kisses for Maddie by Matthew Logelin were popular enough to be on here.

message 34: by Becky (new)

Becky Raeta An Education and Know My Name changed me. Would also like to add The Puma Years by Laura Coleman

message 35: by Kezia (new)

Kezia I’ve read 17 of these and have several more on my TBR list. Viola Davis and Shonda Rhimes are the stand outs. Same with Stanley Tucci, Jennette McCurdy and Tara Westover. Would have loved to see Melinda Gates, Safiya Sinclair and Sarah Smarsh’s books on here. Glennon Doyle’s book “Untamed” does not belong on this list. Terrible!

message 36: by Amy (new)

Amy A couple of glaring omissions:
The Storyteller: Tales of Life and Music by Dave Grohl
Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story by Bono
As You Wish: Inconceivable Tales from the Making of The Princess Bride by Cary Elwes

message 37: by Lexi (new)

Lexi Nowhere Girl was annn AHHHHMAZING read!!

message 38: by Carolyn (new)

Carolyn I’m so done with celebrity memoirs! I mean some are actually worth reading like Jeannette McCurdy’s but she actually had a story to tell that was interesting.
Some really good memoirs that I don’t believe were mentioned: House of Sticks! Ly Tran; A house in the Sky, Lindhout, Crying in the H mart, Zauhner, Solito! Solito was so amazing!!! Why is this not listed!!!
The Sound of Gravel
Educated.
Brain on Fire
All of the above were absolutely incredible!

message 39: by Lynette (last edited Jan 06, 2024 06:56AM) (new)

Lynette Nancie wrote: "kimberly wrote: "Instead of (or at least in addition to) seeing "most popular memoirs" which tend to be mostly celebrity memoirs, I would love to see a list of memoirs worth reading (of which there..."

I think one of the best is Personal History by Katherine Graham. It's older than this list (1997) and it is long (642 pages), but I quite literally had difficulty putting it down. She pulled no punches and was quite candid about even the difficult periods of her life. It was masterful.

message 40: by Rhonda (new)

Rhonda Leanne My favourite new memoir/biography is Beyond the Story by BTS and Myeongseok Kang. It's a great read even if you aren't a fan.
