Space Odysseys: 44 Recent and Upcoming Interstellar Sci-Fi Reads

Posted by Sharon on September 8, 2022

Science fiction has always watched the skies. The genre has a rich tradition of looking to the rest of the cosmos for stories of life in space—or life from space arriving here on Earth. Did you know that the earliest UFO stories go back more than 2,000 years? It’s true.

We've put together a collection of science fiction books published since 2020 that are either set in space or feature story lines of extraterrestrial life. Some highlights from this year, so far, include How High We Go in the Dark, the ambitious eco sci-fi cautionary tale from Sequoia Nagamatsu, and Sea of Tranquility, an equally bold future-forward vision from Emily St. John Mandel of Station Eleven fame. And for readers who like to look ahead, we've included a handful of sci-fi titles still to come between now and the end of 2022. Keen-eyed fans of New Zealand author Tamsyn Muir's Locked Tomb series will be pleased to note that the latest installment, Nona the Ninth, hits U.S. shelves this month.

Sci-fi is a notoriously slippery designation, of course. Look for several cross-genre tales that incorporate elements from other shelves—mystery, say. Or horror. Add anything that catches your eye to your Want to Read shelf, and remember: Watch the skies!

Roberta R. (Offbeat YA) More people should give a chance to Dead Space by Kali Wallace. Especially people who like speculative fiction with a heart and a social conscience.
Dead Space by Kali Wallace

Jeff There's a few good ones here, but if you like this space at all you really should check out Infinite or ExoHunter, both by Jeremy Robinson. Infinite is a mind-bending race to the very edge of space and sanity, and ExoHunter... well... time travellers who fight future space Nazis. Need I say more?

Oh, and they're both different "legs" of his "Infinite Timelines" concept, which is essentially bringing MCU-style storytelling (Infinity Saga, when it was still good) to novels...

Robert Those listed are nice, but I found these "space" / extraterrestrial sci fi novels (written in the past two years) to be Outstanding:
The Peacemaker's Code by Deepak Malhotra
The Virgo Paradox by R.H. Johnson
The Emissary by Michael Edwards
The Sentinel by T.M. Haviland

message 15: by tonya_with_an_o (new)

tonya_with_an_o It's included in this list, but I've rarely heard it talked about and it definitely deserved more hype: Dead Silence by S.A. Barnes. So good and spooky!

message 16: by C.E. (new)

C.E. One of my favorites is "A Wrinkle in Time" by Madeleine L'Engle. I also really enjoyed When Legends Rise by Daphne Self. It's sci-fi with assassins.

message 17: by Chris (new)

Chris "Light From Uncommon Stars" is really well-written. Let's not forget that Tor will be releasing "DUNE: Heir of Caladan" by Brian Herbert & Kevin Anderson in November.

message 18: by Peter (new)

Peter Cawdron I hope you'll forgive a little self-promotion, but it's absurdly difficult for an indie author like myself to be considered on lists like this. My latest novel The Tempest comes out on November 4th. It's a reimagining of Shakespeare's play and classics like Forbidden Planet. If you're interested, check it out!

Iliyan I would definitely put in this list Liu Cixin's The Three-Body problem.

Nah. Ignore that. I just saw the list includes titles published after 2020. It is a shame that Three-Body Problem just became popular in our area.

Michelle R. Smith I love Peter Cawdron’s First Contact series.
