I love series like the Vorkosigan Saga that follow characters as they grow and change over years and decades, and have always thought of the Innsmouth Legacy along those lines.

Anyway, if you want to see more, tell Tor.com, and tell your friends to pick up hard copies of the existing books. :) (less)

Where by "develop the recipe" I mean that I described the thing I was imagining to my householdmate Nora (a considerably more skilled baker), and she kept revising until it tasted right. There's a "water" version and an "air" version depending on how salty you want your saltcakes, and they keep fresh for weeks, suggesting that they were probably originally created for sea voyages. There's a further link at the podcast with recipes for holiday fish stew and fried apples and potatoes as well.(less)

Saturday 1/19 10AM - Embracing the Alien: Writing Believable ETs

Although a classic element of SF stories, many speculative works contain depictions of non-human intelligences. What registers to the human mind as "alien" without trailing into incomprehensibility? What are some common pitfalls and crutches that writers should avoid in creating a... Read more of this blog post »

“Even the most ill-formed words, set to paper, are a great blessing.”
Ruthanna Emrys, Winter Tide

“Odd how automatic masks are, even with those who’ve seen beneath them.”
Ruthanna Emrys, Winter Tide

“All of man’s other religions place him at the center of creation. But man is nothing—a fraction of the life that will walk the Earth. Earth is nothing—a tiny world that will die with its sun. The sun is one of trillions where life flowers, and wants to live, and dies. And between the suns is an endless vast darkness that dwarfs them, through which life can travel only by giving up that wanting, by losing itself. Even that darkness will eventually die. In such a universe, knowledge is the stub of a candle at dusk.”
Ruthanna Emrys, The Litany of Earth
