James Anthony asked Ruthanna Emrys:

Ms Emrys, Are Salt Cakes based on a real recipe? Does one exist? Reading the Innsmouth Legacy series has be really wanting to bake some.

Ruthanna Emrys The "Cooking the Books" podcast gave me the excuse to develop the recipe--here it is:

Where by "develop the recipe" I mean that I described the thing I was imagining to my householdmate Nora (a considerably more skilled baker), and she kept revising until it tasted right. There's a "water" version and an "air" version depending on how salty you want your saltcakes, and they keep fresh for weeks, suggesting that they were probably originally created for sea voyages. There's a further link at the podcast with recipes for holiday fish stew and fried apples and potatoes as well.
