Andrew Keen and Brian Solis discuss how to reshape the future before it reshapes us

Andrew Keen and I have been friends for the better part of almost two decades. We’ve crosses paths many times during the shift from Web 1.0 to 2.0, the rise of the iPhone and the mobile revolution, and now the consumerization of AI. We’ve also shared the stage around world and even crossed each other in airports around the world!

Not only am I proud to call him a friend, I’m also a big fan of his work and thinking.

I had the privilege of joining Andrew on his popular show, Keen On. Please watch it here👀

Episode 2223: Brian Solis on how we need to reshape the future before it reshapes us by Andrew Keen

MINDSHIFT: Lessons from Silicon Valley on how to transform leadership and drive innovation

Read on Substack

Show Description

MINDSHIFT: Lessons from Silicon Valley on how to transform leadership and drive innovation.

Do we shape the future or does it shape us?

That’s the core question in Brian Solis’ new book, Mindshift which provides lessons for corporate executives in transforming leadership and driving innovation. Like so many other futurists, Solis’ work focuses on how we can become irreplaceable in the age of AI. Agency still lies with us, he acknowledges. But unless we use that agency to shape the future, Solis warns, then that future will eventually make all of us eminently replaceable.

Andrew Keen

Named as one of the “100 most connected men” by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world’s best known broadcasters and commentators. In addition to presenting KEEN ON, he is the host of the long-running How To Fix Democracy show. He is also the author of four prescient books about digital technology: CULT OF THE AMATEUR, DIGITAL VERTIGO, THE INTERNET IS NOT THE ANSWER and HOW TO FIX THE FUTURE. Andrew lives in San Francisco, is married to Cassandra Knight, Google’s VP of Litigation & Discovery, and has two grown children.

The First Review of Mindshift is In and Here’s What It Says…

John Pearson over at Pails in Comparison published the first Mindshift review and I just had to share it with you.

To be honest, I was nervous. Like anyone who cares about their work, you wonder how others will experience it.

Let me just share the highlights with you…

I can’t praise this book enough! Why? Before you host your next same-old/same-old strategic planning task force meeting—inspire everyone to read this important book.

Mindshift is next to impossible to review adequately—so I’m just going to bullet-point 20 insights that popped out. (I’ve underlined almost the entire book. Oh, my.) And by the way—the book’s design, graphics, and attention-getting charts are amazing. Mindshift is a joy to read.

1. ALVIN TOFFLER: “The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn.”

2. PLEASERS: “Organizational psychologist Taska Eurich has studied self-awareness, and she’s found that there are two types of self-awareness: internal and external.” The 2×2 chart on page 57 is memorable.

• PLEASERS: High External Awareness and Low Internal Awareness
• AWARE: High External Awareness and High Internal Awareness
• SEEKERS: Low External Awareness and Low Internal Awareness
• INTROSPECTORS: Low External Awareness and High Internal Awareness

3. TITANIC! In 1912, Captain Edward John Smith “was captaining a brand new ship with a novel design. But he didn’t bring a new mindset to the mission. He apparently didn’t open his mind to the possibility that this massive ocean liner, the largest built at the time, might not maneuver as readily as he was used to. As the treasure hunter Bock Lovett says in the James Cameron blockbuster film about the sinking, Smith had ’26 years of experience working against him.’”

4. DISCOMFORT. “When we engage in questioning what we’ve learned from our experiences and interrogating our beliefs, we can feel unmoored. Either we can decide to accept that discomfort and sail forward or we can stay tethered to old ways and become obsolete.”

5. BLACKBERRY? “Just think of all the leaders in business that failed to embrace change: Blackberry, Nokia, Blockbuster, Toys R Us, Borders, General Motors…” and more.

6. AQUINAS. “Italian Christian theologian and philosopher St. Thomas Aquinas once warned, ‘Beware of the man with one book.’” (Chapter 4, “The Beginner’s Mind,” is must-read.)

7. MISTAKES. Stanford Prof Carol Dweck contrasts a “Fixed Mindset” with a “Growth Mindset” and includes these values for a growth mindset:

• “Mistakes help me learn.
• Is this my best work?
• Feedback is valuable.
• I improve with practice.
• I won’t give up.”

She adds, “Why waste time proving over and over how great you are, when you could be getting better?”

8. FAILURE. “Legendary basketball coach John Wooden once said that no one is a failure until they start blaming others.”

9. BE CURIOUS! View the eighth episode of the first season of Ted Lasso to learn “What Ted Lasso Can Teach Us About Curiosity.” Ted Lasso quotes Walt Whitman, “Be curious, not judgmental.” View the three-minute clip here. (Hilarious!)

10. HOLY CURIOSITY. “Einstein believed curiosity is one of humanity’s best traits.” He added, “Never lose a holy curiosity.” (There’s that “curiosity” theme again that keeps popping up in my recent book reviews.)

11. MID-POINT SUMMARY. Brilliant! Halfway through the book, Brian Solis summarizes on one page, in BIG print: “What a journey we’ve been on. Just look at how far we’ve come.” On page 121, he reminds us of 10 themes he’s covered, including:

• “Together…we’ve learned that the door is opening to a novel economy, and it’s an era that needs new leadership.”
• Together we’ve… “learned that even though executives might think they do, they don’t always have all the answers.”

12. SIX STAGES OF MINDSET SHIFTING. Now the fun begins in Chapters 7 to 12: “Receive, Perceive, Weave, Conceive, Believe, and Achieve.” Must-read!

13. MINDSET LEXICON. Five words: “Trendsight, Trendsighting, Trendscape Canvas, Trendfluence, and Trendspark.” (I mean…how can you not read this book with your team?)

14. SLOW DOWN! Oh, my. How do we address those looming trends? How do we sleep at night? Brian Solis has two words for us: “Slow down.” (Now he’s meddling! But it prompted me to play this song at the beginning of a meeting I facilitated last week. You guessed it: “Slow Down,” sung by Chuck Girard.)

15. NO BURDEN. “Early on, as we’re learning not just how to track trends but also how to identify them, letting go of the burden of trying to predict the future. That’s not what we’re trying to do here. We are exploring the trends that might impact our ecosystem. It’s a process of getting smart about the promise or potential of emerging trends. It’s also spending time thinking about how those trends could unfold and what those changes might look like.”

16. WONDER WALL! Let’s do this! The “Wonder Wall” exercise on page 129 is worth the price of the book! Solis writes, “Creating a wonder wall activates your powers of curiosity. It helps you connect the dots between the future you envision and where you are today. The process ignites your childlike sense of wonder and helps you consider the questions with a beginner’s mind and a positive sense of possibilities.” He includes 20 questions he’s found helpful. (Guarantee: You will do a “Wonder Wall” at your next strategic planning retreat.)

Here are two questions (“Wondering Samples”) that popped off the page for me:
• “What WSJ or NYT headline would describe our ideal future state?”
• “If we don’t transform now, what will our tombstone read and when?”

There are 18 more “sample” questions—examples of questions your team might write on post-it notes and then post on your Wonder Wall—“the visual reflection of the things that stoke your curiosity and the things that you can’t stop thinking about, that are burning inside of you.”

17. NARRATIVE VS. NUMBERS. The author writes that the three stages of “weave, conceive, and believe” will help to “develop a story for change that sparks curiosity, conversation, and collaboration, ultimately leading to action.” The power of story is explored—very creatively in these chapters (think Pixar’s storytelling approach)—yet with this warning:

Solis mentions Professor Scott Galloway’s research, “Data may be more truthful, but in the battle between narrative and numbers, most of the time humanity picks narrative.” (However, for a slightly contrarian, but very helpful complementary view, read my review of Making Numbers Count, by Chip Heath and Karla Starr.)

18. WIM (What It Means) EXERCISE. I know you will immediately use this planning tool also. “Think of the WIM exercise as a way of getting to:

• …the what,
• so what,
• and now what…
of every trend.”

19. SCENARIO PLANNING. Don’t skip the section on “a common misconception about the nature of scenario planning.” (Learn about IBM’s 1981 estimate that sales of personal computers would peak at 200,000. “Unfortunately, they were a little wrong.” The number was 25 million!)

20. MAKE YOUR STORY PERSONAL. In Chapter 10, you’ll read about “Connecting Trends to the Human Condition by Making Your Story Personal” and stories that appeal to our deepest emotions: anger, disgust, fear, happiness, sadness, and surprise. You’ll learn from “the world’s best-known and most respected screenwriting lecturer” as referenced in HBR’s article, “Storytelling That Moves People.” (And you’ll want to get the popcorn and enjoy the classic movie, Monsters, Inc.)

The author notes that “the best stories are about the human condition we all share”—and page 195 includes a graphic with 18 themes you can leverage. The assignment: “Consider how you might tell a story about a trend in a way that shows how that trend can help your audience with these universal aspects of life.”

Reminder: I told you this book is next to impossible to adequately review. I still haven’t done it, so please read this book yourself. (I might write a second review of this book down the road—it’s that good and it’s that important.)

Order Mindshift on Amazon and learn more about the book here.

AInsights: Google’s NotebookLM Will Turn Any Executive into an Expert Researcher, Analyst, and Podcaster?

AInsights: Your executive-level insights making sense of the latest in generative AI…

I’m not going to lie, when I first heard about the Google Notebook, officially named NotebookLM, it’s new AI pilot program, I thought that it would be limited to use by students and educators. I’ve since changed my mind. You could say I shifted my mindset.

So what is NotebookLM? Is it just another tool like ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Meta.ai, or Claude?

Yes and no.

NotebookLM is powered by Google’s Gemini Pro language model. But it’s not just focused on pre-existing language models per se. It’s a dedicated workspace trained on specific material users upload to build an intelligent assistant. It’s a bit like OpenAI’s GPTs, but designed specifically as a research and note-taking assistant.

Said another way, Google’s NotebookLM organizes, analyzes, and synthesizes information from specific sources they provide. It combines the power of large language models with user-provided content to create a personalized research assistant. It allows users to upload and interact with multiple sources of information, creating a tailored knowledge base for each project or “notebook.”

Users can upload up to 50 sources per notebook, including Google Docs, Google Slides, PDFs, website URLs, and text files. Each source can be up to 500,000 words long, allowing for extensive research materials.

NotebookLM creates overviews, summaries, key topics, and suggested questions based on the uploaded documents. It can also analyze charts, images, and diagrams within the sources.

Users can ask questions about their sources, and NotebookLM provides answers with inline citations, linking directly to relevant sections of the original documents (a bit of a nod to Perplexity.ai).

NotebookLM allows users to create, save, and organize notes. It can transform selected notes into outlines, table of contents, study guides, or summaries.

Notebooks can be shared with team members, enabling collaborative research and analysis.

NOW HERE’S SOMETHING WILD…

NotebookLM can even generate podcast-style discussions about the content, providing an audio summary of the information. It emulates a conversation between two hosts and is, if you didn’t pick up on nuances along the way, convincing…and fun!

More on this in a bit…

AInsights

This newsletter is all about understanding the impact of AI trends for busy executives. This one is a bit different as it serves as a personal research assistant, which could bridge the larger work done by actual research organizations and the executives who benefit from their work. NotebookLM doesn’t replace these groups by any stretch of the imagination. But it does help to provoke and enlighten executives to better work with others across their teams and organization.

NotebookLM acts as a virtual research assistant, helping executives and their teams quickly synthesize information from multiple sources. This can significantly reduce the time spent on research and analysis.

Notebooks can be shared with team members, enabling collaborative research and analysis.

But let’s get into some specific applications that where NotebookLM can shine.

Strategic Planning: Executives can use NotebookLM to consolidate market research, competitor analysis, and internal reports to inform strategic decision-making.

Project Management: Teams can create notebooks for specific projects, keeping all relevant documents, notes, and discussions in one place.

Meeting Preparation: NotebookLM can help executives quickly summarize key points from multiple documents, ensuring they are well-prepared for important meetings.

Trend Analysis: By uploading various industry reports and news articles, executives can use NotebookLM to identify emerging trends and patterns in their sector.

Audio Summaries: The new Audio Overview feature generates podcast-style discussions about the content in the notebook to unreal levels. Seriously.

I fed it parts of the MindShift manuscript to see what it could do. And wow. Just wow. I let it cycle five different times, and each were impressive and entertaining. I had a difficult time choosing which to keep.

Take 1

Take 2

I could imagine though, in any research project, creating fun audio content for stakeholders to consume beyond decks, emails, meetings, or reports.

As Google’s audio podcast summaries surmised from Mindshift, “Every step outside your comfort zone is a step toward growth.”

Indeed. Imagine the possibilities.

How to Shift Your Mindset to Become Irreplaceable in the Age of AI

I joined enterprise industry legends Pascal Bornet, Ray Wang, and Vala Afshar to explore a new future forward and I’m feeling so inspired! ✨

I’ve known Ray Wang and Vala Afshar for years, too many to count. I’ve also followed the work of Pascal Bornet, also, for too many years to count.

It was a coming home of sorts when I joined them on DisrupTV for a conversation about AI and the mindset needed to think beyond automation. This was also my first public conversation about my new book, Mindshift: Transform Leadership, Drive Innovation, and Reshape the Future.

It’s been five long years since I’ve published a book, and a lot has changed. What hasn’t changed though is common leadership mindsets and practices. In an era of AI, that has to change. You can’t automate your way to innovation. You can pre-order it now on Amazon or your favorite bookstore for delivery this coming week! 🙏

My segments starts immediately following introductions…

DisrupTV Summary

Brian discussed his new book “Mindshift,” emphasizing the need for leaders to embrace innovation and challenge legacy models. He highlighted the importance of self-awareness and scenario planning to navigate the “novel economy” shaped by AI. Pascal introduced his book “Irreplaceable,” focusing on the three competencies of the future: AI readiness, change readiness, and human readiness.

Pascal Bornet, the founder and former leader of the “AI and Automation” practices at McKinsey & Company and Ernst & Young and author of Irreplaceable: The Art of Standing Out in the Age of Artificial Intelligence.

Pascal stressed the importance of genuine creativity, critical thinking, and social authenticity in maintaining human relevance amidst technological advancements.

Brian Solis to Keynote 2024 Gartner IT Symposium in Orlando Florida

Brian Solis, Head of Global Innovation at ServiceNow, will keynote the Gartner IT Symposium in Orlando on October 22nd 2024.

Attendees who visit the ServiceNow booth will also be treated to a complimentary copy of Brian’s new book Mindshift: Transform Leadership, Drive Innovation, and Reshape the Future.

The vision of CIOs and technology executives matters more than ever – calling for leaders executing technology priorities while preparing for an AI-augmented future. Instilling a culture of innovation and creating an organization fit for the next-generation workforce.

The Great Divide: Uniting the C-Suite to Build the Business of the Future

CEOs are leaned into AI like no other technology before, mentioning GenAI in earnings calls 40,000 in 2023. At the same time, only one-third of CIOs and technology leaders are actively piloting generative AI solutions according to Gartner research. While business executives are bullish on genAI, costs, lack of resources, and the absence of an ultimate vision for the future are creating a notable divide within companies around the world.

Storied venture capitalist Vinod Khosla observed the rate of progress of AI on all fronts and the general lack of progress in the evolution of companies. “Most businesses have no clue what is about to hit them in the next ten years when most rules of engagement will change,” he said, noting that he believes only a few hundred people know what is happening.

Add to this, a headline story in The Economist wondered, “What happened to the artificial intelligence revolution,” exploring why the technology has had almost no impact.

The answer lies in the great divide between executive vision and digital investments and execution. We have to start with examining potential impacts and futures, design for adaptation and innovation, and define the role we want to play in building this new future.

It’s time to rethink the next generation of business and our place in it.

About Brian

Brian Solis serves as the Head of Global Innovation at ServiceNow where he leads vision, strategy, and program innovation for the company’s global Innovation and Executive Briefing Centers. Brian also partners with ServiceNow leaders and strategic account teams to advise executives on next-generation innovation and business transformation strategies.

AInsights: OpenAI’s o1 Model and the New Era of Generative AI That Can Reason and Learn

AInsights: Your executive-level insights making sense of the latest in generative AI…

OpenAI recently introduced its o1-preview and o1-mini models. Previously rumored as Project Strawberry, o1 represents a significant advancement in generative AI evolution, designed to enhance reasoning capabilities and problem-solving skills.

It consists of two main variants: o1-preview: The flagship model with deep reasoning and problem-solving abilities. o1-mini: A smaller, more efficient model optimized for code generation and technical tasks.

The o1 model uses “Chain-of-Thought (CoT) reasoning in 01 to improve problem-solving. What that means is that o1 breaks down complex problems into smaller, manageable steps, mimicking human thought processes. This allows the AI to tackle problems systematically, improving accuracy, and depth of responses.

As it progresses through the reasoning chain, the 01 model recognizes and corrects mistakes. It can also break down complex steps into simpler ones as needed.

Let’s get this out of the way. The 01 model is slower to deliver results than the standard ChatGPT model. Before you complain, it’s because it’s “thinking” about the output it delivers to you. It’s also learning through a process called reinforcement learning (RL).

RL allows the model to refine its reasoning strategies over time. Through repeated interactions and feedback, o1 learns to recognize and correct mistakes, break down complex problems into simpler steps, and try alternative approaches when initial attempts fail

AInsights

OpenAI o1 represents a significant advancement in AI technology that has several important implications for business executives and their teams…

Enhanced problem-solving capabilities

The o1 models, particularly o1-preview, excel at complex reasoning tasks, especially in STEM fields. This can help teams tackle challenging technical and analytical problems more effectively.

Some possible scenarios would include more accurate and insightful solutions to complex business challenges, improved performance in fields like coding, mathematics, and logical reasoning, and the potential for tackling previously unsolvable problems.

For example, in mathematical and scientific tasks, o1 significantly outperformed GPT-4o. In one case, o1 solved 83% of International Mathematical Olympiad problems compared to GPT-4o’s 13%.

Better decision-making

The advanced reasoning capabilities of o1 models can provide more accurate and insightful analysis, supporting executives in making more informed decisions.

o1’s advanced reasoning can support executives in making more informed decisions by providing deeper analysis of complex data and situations.

With their advanced reasoning abilities, o1 models can also provide more nuanced insights for strategic decision-making. They offer detailed analysis of complex business scenarios and also help in risk assessment and mitigation strategies.

Self-reflection

o1 can reassess its outputs, correct errors, and reduce hallucinations, leading to more reliable responses.

Specialized Applications

The o1 models show particular promise in certain areas:

1) Scientific Research: They can assist with tasks like annotating cell sequencing data and handling complex mathematical formulas.

2) Financial Analysis: The models’ mathematical prowess could be valuable for financial modeling and risk assessment.

3) Software Development: o1 models perform exceptionally well in coding tasks, potentially accelerating software development processes.

Potential for AI Agents

The o1 models’ capabilities make them suited for developing AI agents that can handle complex, multi-step tasks. This could lead to, 1) more sophisticated automation of business processes across multiple business groups and systems, 2) AI agents capable of handling of intricate workflows, and 3) reduced need for human intervention (human in the loop) in certain complex tasks.

The last one, for the savvy executive, represents the most important opportunity for the future of business. It’s a “mindshift” from automation to automation and augmentation. It’s not a matter of replacing people, but instead to augment them by super-charging their capabilities. We’ve not spent enough energy imagining what augmented work and outcomes could be, and this is a competitive opportunity.

Unleash the Leader Within: Introducing Mindshift, My First Book Since 2019

I can’t believe this day is finally here. I beyond proud to announce my next book, Mindshift: Transform Leadership, Drive Innovation, and Reshape the Future. It’s my first book since Lifescale released in 2019 and my first business book since X in 2015. Though both books are still timely and continue to inspire readers, it was time for me to take on the subject of leadership.

For the last several years, we have experienced incredible disruption. It also feels like this perpetual disruption is the new normal.

The thing is, that we don’t have to go back to business as usual each time. Doing so is holding us back from progress, and from reaching our potential.

Mindshift isn’t just another business book. It’s a blueprint for the future and written for those who know the future doesn’t wait for anyone.

The Mindshift experience is a call to action for leaders, innovators, and dreamers who want to turn disruption into opportunity. Over the last few years, the world has changed dramatically, and with that, so has the way we lead and create. We’re not just living in times of change—we’re living in times of accelerated transformation, where AI, economic uncertainty, and societal shifts are rewriting the rules of business and leadership.

In Mindshift, I explore what it takes to thrive in this new era. From learning to think differently, to developing a mindset that’s not just adaptable but proactive, this book offers the strategies and insights needed to succeed when the world is constantly changing.

If you’re ready to challenge the status quo, spot emerging trends before others, and lead your team into the future, Mindshift is for you.

Why is this moment so important to me? Because these times have taught me that true leadership is not about following old playbooks or giving into yesterday’s beliefs and biases. It’s about challenging and rewriting them. It’s about asking questions and listening to new voices. It’s about stoking curiosity and imagination. And this book is designed to help you do exactly that.

I invite you to pre-order your copy today.

Be among the first to embark on this journey with me. Let’s create a future that’s shaped by our bold ideas, vision, and, most importantly, our willingness to shift our minds.

The time for change is now, and it starts with a Mindshift.

Pre-order Mindshift today and get ready to lead the future. Visit Minshift.ing for more!

Recruiting Future Podcast: Augmenting Talent Acquisition with Generative AI

This is me with Matt Alder, Talent Acquisition Futurist, podcast host, and my new friend, following my presentation at SmartRecruiters’ Hiring Success event in Amsterdam.

I joined Matt on his show, Recruiting Future We discussed ways generative AI is reshaping the future of talent acquisition for companies and job seekers.

Please listen!

Most conversations about AI in talent acquisition focus on efficiencies and automating repetitive tasks. However, we are missing the point if we don’t start talking about how AI could help reshape recruiting entirely, making it more efficient but also more effective. Why stop at recruiting? AI could revolutionize work and the whole way we think about careers.

The current limitations of our thinking were really brought home to me when I attended the SmartRecruiters Hiring Success conference last week in Amsterdam. An overarching theme was that automation is a given with AI, and we should think much bigger.

So, what does this mean for TA strategies, and how can TA Leaders ensure they proactively shape the future direction of recruiting?

My guest this week is Brian Solis, Head of Global Innovation at ServiceNow. He is also an internationally renowned digital anthropologist and award-winning author. Brian gave the opening keynote at Hiring Success, and I caught up with him after he left the stage to get his thoughts on the current state of the AI revolution and the future of talent acquisition.

In the interview, we discuss:

• Where is the Gen AI revolution?

• New behaviors, skills, and expectations

• How are companies responding?

• Empowering people with augmented intelligence

• How can we think differently?

• AI-enabled job seekers

• Using an empathetic lens to identify quick wins

• Differentiated use cases and transformational initiatives

• The importance of the human touch

• Three things TA leaders should be doing right now

• What should recruiting look like in five years?
