Terry Reviews: Red Rising

brown-redrisingRed Rising by Pierce Brown

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is odd for me, but I am going to recommend a book that isn’t even out yet.

I read the ARC, and I was captivated enough to want to alert you to its publishing date in January 2014. The book is Red Rising by Pierce Brown. This is a first book by a new author. It has hints of Harry Potter and Hunger Games, but it is its own animal. And it is not YA. The writing is excellent and the story is better. This is one terrific fantasy book, and I woul...

Poll: Who Is Your Favorite Original Shannara Trilogy Protagonist?

Wil Ohmsford painted by Darrell K. Sweet

Wil Ohmsford painted by Darrell K. Sweet

Protagonists matter.

In The Sword of Shannara, The Elfstones of Shannara, and The Wishsong of Shannara, they matter more than in a usual novel. It is not every day that a person gets the chance to save the world, and the protagonists from those first three Shannara books save the Four Lands and Beyond three times over!

Writers ask a lot of their characters. Terry is no different. Return to Shea Ohmsford. He is pulled from his sleepy life in Shady Vale, th...

Poll: What Do You Want Terry To Write Next?

First page of the ARC!!

First page of The High Druid’s Blade!!

Ever since I’ve known Terry, he has always had a story to tell.

Terry is a writer. That is his calling. And like most true writers, he has more stories to tell than he has time. That creates a terrible problem at times:

What to write next?

He is best known for Shannara. Many readers love Landover. And there are quite a few people out there—like me—who believe his Word/Void trilogy is the best thing he has written. He has jumped between these series for two d...

Terry Reviews: The Maid’s Version

woodrell-maidsThe Maid’s Version by Daniel Woodrell

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Many of you may remember a movie called Winter’s Bone, if only for the fact that it was Jennifer Lawrence’s first big role. What you might not know is that first it was a book by a writer named Daniel Woodrell. His latest book, just out, is called The Maid’s Version. It is a story that centers on an explosion and fire at a dance hall that killed more than forty people and still resonates in the history of the town. The person respons...

Here is the tentative cover for The Darkling Child, the second book in the Defenders of Shannara series!

As I’ve said before, the Defenders of Shannara is a series comprised of three stand alone Shannara novels. The first book, The High Druid’s Blade, will publish March 11, 2014 and features a Leah has a the main character.

The Darkling Child is the second book and will publish later in 2014.

What do you think of the tentative cover above?

Poll: Favorite Knight of the Word?

“Angel Perez” by Rob Alexander

The Knights of the Word protect our world from the possible future they witness in their dreams.

As we have seen, that future is pretty dark. When John Ross came to Hopewell, Illinois in Running with the Demon, it was the beginning of something great for Terry. You can put me in the camp who believes that the Word/Void trilogy is Terry’s finest achievement—other than The Elfstones of Shannara—and in that achievement lies powerful characters, magic, great hope, and...
