Terry Reviews: Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk

fountain-billyBilly Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk by Ben Fountain

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

My book recommendation for this month is Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk by Ben Fountain. This book is on everyone’s short list for awards, and it deserves to be. Billy is a very young Iraqi war veteran home with member of his squad on a promotional tour following a horrific firefight in which a number of terrorists were killed. How Billy sees himself, his buddies and the larger world – both inside and outside of the way in...

Terry Attending SFWA Pacific Northwest Reading Series

The greater Pacific Northwest is home to Ursula K. Le Guin, Kay Kenyon, Jay Lake, Nancy Kress, Brent Weeks, Ted Chiang and Ramona Quimby. Although Ramona isn’t known for her Science Fiction and Fantasy escapades, the rest are, and will be celebrated as part of the Pacific Northwest Reading Series. These free quarterly events provide the Northwest Science Fiction and Fantasy community a chance to gather, network and enjoy readings from local authors.

Poll: What Character Deserves a Full-Length Novel?

nielsen-walker

Character drives narrative.

When Terry was at Powell’s Books on August 15th, he was asked about whether or not he had any plans to write a book about the King of the Silver River. Terry gets this question a lot, especially if you can insert a different character name into the question.

He answered the question like this. He has no plans. He has enough on his plate as it is and he doesn’t have the time to write a book about the King of the Silver River, or Allanon, or Garet Jax, or Cogline, etc...

Terry Reads An Excerpt: The High Druid’s Blade

brooks-highdruidsbladeWitch Wraith by Terry Brooks is now published and in fine bookstores!

As usual, Terry toured for the new book’s release. The last stop on his Witch Wraith tour was in Portland, Oregon on August 15, 2013. I joined Terry to video tape his reading and support my anthology, Unfettered. We met some great fans and they came out in droves!

About Witch Wraith. It’s fantastic. It is the concluding volume of the Dark Legacy of Shannara trilogy but it is much more than that. I argue it is a fitting sequel...

Cover: The High Druid’s Blade

brooks-highdruidsbladeOn March 11, 2014, The High Druid’s Blade by Terry Brooks will be published!

It is the first stand alone Shannara novel since First King of Shannara published in 1995. It features a Leah rather than an Ohmsford. It takes place about 100 years after the events of Witch Wraith. And it takes place largely in the Southland.

Here is the synopsis for The High Druid’s Blade:

From New York Times bestselling author Terry Brooks comes the first stand-alone novel in his legendary Shannara series in almost...

Terry Reviews: The Maze Runner

dashner-mazeThe Maze Runner by James Dashner

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I’ll give a shout out to James Dashner and his Maze Runner trilogy. This is young adult, but fantasy adventure of the highest order. Very exciting, very fast moving. There is a prequel and he has gone on to begin another series, but I’m not there yet. Try the first in the series – Maze Runner. His fully realized world of entrapment of kids is scary stuff.

Terry Brooks signed at Gibson’s Bookstore in Concord, NH, on Saturday July 27th, 2013.

Due to a delay in the bookstore’s pending move to a larger location which was scheduled to be ready for this event—as well as a failing air conditioner in the store—the event was held next door in Red River Theatres, an independent movie theatre.

The second picture is of Terry and the Gibson's Bookstore Events Coordinator, Elisabeth Jewell.
