BrooksBlog: The High Druid’s Blade
On March 11, 2014, Del Rey will publish the first of several stand-alone Shannara books. It is titled The High Druid’s Blade. I’ve been talking about doing this for awhile, and I feel the time is right for it. I’ve been writing in sets for so long I’ve practically forgotten how to do anything else. Everything I have written in the past fifteen years – save for Princess of Landover and Sometimes the Magic Works – has been in sets of two, three or four. Readers have been patient with me, only a...

When Fans Travel Great Distances

Denis, Terry & Alexandre
Terry can’t visit every city, town, and berg on Earth sadly. That means sometimes his fans have to travel.
For this tour, the winning prize probably goes to Denis and Alexandre. They first made a pilgrimage from France to Seattle, WA to see firsthand some of the settings in A Knight of the Word and Armageddon’s Children (the Underground tour, John Ross’s living space, the Hammer Man, etc.). Then they went to Highlands Ranch to see Terry himself.
Terry told them to send p...

That said, due to all those threads wrapping up, we should be able to have a pretteeeee good discussion of the book.
And the series where it stands right now.
To have the discussion, this must be a spoiler post with spoiler comments and spoiler opinions. Don’t read t...

Witch Wraith, the concluding volume in The Dark Legacy of Shannara trilogy, is now published in fine bookstores! That’s right! It’s time to read!
In my opinion, it is an amazing book wrapping up a great series. There is a scene in Witch Wraith that, once read, I couldn’t continue. I put the book down for an entire week, the scene chilling and haunting. The final book in Dark Legacy also has some of the most touching moments Terry has written and it wraps up many threads that...

BrooksBlog: When Bad Reviews Strike
I just finished reading a really bad review of my next book, Witch Wraith.
The reviewer didn’t like it. Hated it, in fact. Made snide comments. Went out of the way to say gratuitously nasty things about it, even going so far as to say I was treading on sacred Tolkien ground.
Oh, that again.
I admit I was upset. After all these years and hundreds – maybe thousands – of reviews later, I still feel bad when someone publicly announces they don’t like one of my books. Or even all of them. I thought I...

Todd Lockwood Battles Terry Brooks
What happens when an artist and an author get together to sign books?
They get so fed up with one another that they resort to battle royale!
Author Terry Brooks and artist Todd Lockwood visited my headquarters to sign copies of Unfettered, the newly released anthology featuring some of the best talent in the genre. After four hours of signing and making plans to take over the world, the two friends had had enough of one another and resorted to the sort of violence only seen in Braveheart.
Who wo...

Unfettered EBook Launched
Well, at least the digital version is!
The physical hardcovers should arrive today if the freight company is to be believed. 5000 copies. A lot for a small press. The proceeds from sales go toward alleviating the medical debt I garnered from treating cancer two years ago. I am happy to report that debt is almost gone. I suspect it will be entirely gone by the end of the year.
The story of Unfettered is a good one. The science fiction and fantasy community rallied around me an...

Poll: Have You Read Sometimes the Magic Works?
Memoir & Writing Guide
I wasn’t always a writer. Many people who knew me when are surprised at what I do now.
Once upon a time, I was a student of chemistry. I loved it. It still intrigues me to this day and I keep up on many of the more interesting biochemical news and research. And one day, undoubtedly, I will write a science fiction novel pulling on that very different side of me. But I suppose the two aren’t that far apart really. Writing and chemistry are about puzzles, pure and simple, and...
