Blog Interview-Dorothy A. Washington-Indie Author of Poetry In Stages
*Please like and share:
1.Tell us a little about yourself and your latest novel or book.
My name is Dorothy Washington. I’m a retired special education teacher. I like gardening, landscaping, helping others, reading to my grandchildren and giving them books to reads. I love to read. I write poetry and children’s stories.
2.What inspired you to be a writer and to get into indie publishing? How long have you been writing? How long have you been published as an indie author?
My special needs students inspired me to write. I saw their struggle and potential. And it encouraged me to follow my dreams as I was encouraging them to follow theirs. I have been writing for twelve years my own quotes, children’s stories and poetry. I wrote for my local newspaper The Deer Creek Pilot several community and community improvement based articles as well as articles promoting other local authors for about a year right before and after my retirement. My first book was published in December 2018.
3.Who are your writing mentors/authors? What genres do you enjoy writing and what genres do you like to read? Are you an avid reader/reviewer of other authors?
Helen Steiner-Rice, Kate McVeigh, Langston Hughes. I like writing children’s stories and poetry. I like to read science fiction, poetry, mystery thrillers, medical, historical and science books. Yes, I’m an avid reader of various authors such as Mary Wilder-Tileston and Dennis Pollock.
4.Have you ever co-wrote or consider collaborating or co-writing with anyone on a writing project?
I have co-written a script about Robert Smalls, an American businessman, publisher and politician born into slavery in Beaufort, South Carolina who freed himself, his crew and their families during the American Civil War by commandeering a Confederate transport ship in Charleston harbor on May 13, 1862. Yes, I would like to co-write something with Angel M.B. Chadwick who is a successful fellow indie author and my publisher.
5.What are your dreams and aspirations that could drive you forward on this writing and publication journey?
My dream is to be on the bestseller list one day whether it is on Amazon or the New York Times.
6.Do you prefer to do marketing and promotion yourself for your works or would you rather have someone else control that spectrum? What are some of the things you have done to promote and market yourself?
I prefer to have someone else doing the marketing and promotion mostly but coinciding with what I do on the ground floor to promote and market myself. I have sold my paperback books locally at my church and to my neighbors and have made cash sales. I have sold about thirty books this way, since I’m not one for promoting or marketing on social media. I’m a bit old-fashioned when it comes to selling on that level. I leave that to my publisher.
7.What is your greatest accomplishment as an author?
My first book, Poetry in Stages being published and now I can breathe again and not feel so anxious and worrying about getting it out or if I get it out there. It’s out there.
8.What's the next writing project(s) you're working on?
My children’s books are next on my list to get published.
9.How would you balance creativity with the business side of writing such as coming up with particular concepts and solutions to stand out amongst the crowd in this writing/publishing industry where 'popularity' is key, if your idea wasn't exactly popular/or was unknown to the readers/publishers?
I’m not sure. It’s so much you have to do ads, all sorts of promotions and blogging.
10.Have you ever been traditionally published? Would you consider it? Or feel like a sell out if you took a traditional deal and abandoned indie publishing? Have you ever thought about being a hybrid, part indie, part traditionally published? How would you feel about such an opportunity, if both or either of these things happened?
I won’t say I won’t accept the offer to be traditionally published. But I prefer being an independent author.
11.What other creative talents do you have? Do you draw, sketch, paint, etc.?
I tried drawing for one of my children’s stories. I tried to teach myself how to draw, but I’m not an artist.
12. What advice would you give other aspiring authors?
Don’t quit.
13. Describe yourself in a one-sentence epithet.
If at first you don’t succeed, keep going.
14. Paying it forward. What things do you do in your community/ and other communities to help others?
I give food donations to my church. I give gifts like household items to the locals in my community because I buy so much stuff from thrift stores. I love going to thrift stores. And I don’t want to be a hoarder, so I give some of it to others in the community who might need or appreciate it.

I'm Not A Romance Author
*Please like or share:
I'm not a romance author. Can I write romance? Yes. Will romance be in my books? Yes. Will it be in every book? No. Romance will never be the central theme of any of my works. Is that because I don't like romance or have never had it in my life? I'm not a fan of strictly romance books they don't hold my attention. There has to be more to it than just the romance. And yes, I've had romance in my life, the alpha and the sensitive and brooding type rolled into one in real life and it's definitely not like the Harlequin romances I used to read as a teen. And I never expected it to be because that's fiction. It's fine if other people like romance or write romance but it's never been my cup of tea.
I prefer no romance at all when writing or reading a book or very little of it if any. But if it does have it throughout it can't be the central theme it has to have mystery, suspense, sci-fi, fantasy, steampunk or one of the other punk fiction genres or horror, or some other genre involved as the central theme. And it must have diversity throughout and must be multi-genre. That's the kind of books I write and that's the kind I like to read. I'm a multi-genre author. I mix several genres in my books. And I have eclectic tastes when it comes to reading books and writing them. I'm a thinker's reader, the thinker's author. I like books that make me think especially if they are fiction. Those are the kind that resonate with me and those are the kind I write. If it doesn't leave me thinking then I don't remember it at all.

I Have Officially Published Another Author
*Please like and share:
Hi, everyone. Ten days ago, I mentioned in the December 24, 2018 blog post here that I will be publishing other upcoming authors at the end of the year. That has happened. Just a few days ago, I published Dorothy Washington's poetry book, Poetry In Stages. As of now I haven't added any of my publishing imprints yet. But on the acknowledgements page of her book is where you'll find her stating appreciation for me publishing her first work. I will be publishing her series of children books. And those will be marked under one of my publishing imprints. This is the second author I have published besides myself. And the third book I've published. I publish paperbacks and e-books. Her book is strictly in paperback. There will be no e-book version per her request. Here is the link to her book which is live on Amazon. In other countries such as Canada, Australia, UK, etc. please allow 6-8 weeks in those marketplaces for it to show up. I will post about more on this and other news in a later blog post.

Welcome to the Indie Advent Calendar-December 1-31, 2018. It's time to join a holiday of adventure, getting to know authors, bloggers and more featured here in these links:

I have been promoting a lot of young upcoming indie authors on Wattpad by tagging them into writing contests I enter in and find, adding their books on my reading lists, and reading, voting and commenting on their works that I find interest in.
Whether it's providing a listening ear, giving advice when they feel like this creating and writing thing is becoming too daunting of a task for them to carry on I am there for those that need me. I do it mostly in silence and I never ask for anything in return. I have always promoted indie authors and artists, especially the younger ones.
I have applied for the position of Wattpad Ambassador. I hope I get in because I love mentoring young creative minds. And quite a bit, they seem to come to me for advice or help when they need it. I never hesitate to help them.
I have been making covers on my own for the last few years. I have made them on Wattpad for my own books as of right now but have recently entered a contest to do them professionally, which is something I want to do. So we'll see how it goes. I have been doing banners and posters, too for the last three years.
On another note: I recently posted in previous blog posts that my multi-genre steampunk/sci-fi novella Traveling Salesman: Astronomgonist won Second Place in the Bookworm Awards 2018 for Science Fiction and six to seven weeks later I was nominated for Best Female Author in Fantasy 2018 in the Majestic Awards for Traveling Salesman: Astronomgonist and won.
A week and a half later, I have just won a third award for Traveling Salesman: Astronomgonist Second Place in the Creative Minds Awards for Science Fiction. Traveling Salesman: Astronomgonist. The last two months have been such a whirlwind. I have never won anything before.
But it took me so many years and so much hard work to get to this point for someone for anyone to notice my work enough to give it this much praise. I always tell those I've mentored I am not an overnight success.
Real success and prolonged success comes from years and years of consistency and very hard work. You can't quit. You have to keep going even when you don't want to. I have been doing this for nearly thirty years since I was thirteen years old.
Using my educational background (see bio) and life experiences in my work and my goals constantly striving. And this is the result. It wasn't easy.
And especially to make it on a platform as huge as Wattpad where works like mine would be easily overlooked because they are so different. It took me five years to get noticed on Wattpad.
And I had to leave four of those years to complete my goal of becoming a publisher and publishing my own works which I've done and continue to do.
Now I'm publishing other upcoming authors which begins the end of this year along with ghostwriting and editing ( I will elaborate further on this in a new blog post). and I'm going to continue do this because it's something I've always wanted to do among other creative endeavors. So stay tuned for more on that. In the meantime, check out my other posts here on my Goodreads blog.
