An Indulgent Christmas Song
I had to write a new Christmas song to the tune of an old Christmas song. Actually, I just had to write new gifts into the old Christmas song about giving gifts for twelve days (aptly named, The Twelve Days of Christmas). It came about because of a #SixWordStory writing prompt. I know it is silly, but there are other sillier Christmas songs out there.
By the way. Whether you normally pronounce Porsche as one or two syllables, it sounds better in the song with two. (Sorry for the spoiler wi...

Kimchi Is Not the Answer
I thought about it some more and realized that kimchi is really not the answer to COVID. (As if it ever was.)
Kimchi is NOT the answer to COVID despite anything you might have heard or read on the internet. Even in this blog. But there is much about kimchi to be heralded. After all, it is one of the most perfect foods, and should be considered to be its own food group. But there are a few drawbacks to kimchi. Especially, in the age of masks.
I was thinking about kimchi and masks when I wa...

Kimchi Is the Answer
If you have been wondering how to stop COVID, I have found the answer. Kimchi. (Which by the way, might also be spelled kimchee.)
(I want to say right up front that this is not a serious post. (You might even call it tongue in cheek.) And yes, I do write and post about serious stuff every now and then. This is just not one of those times. But back to the topic at hand. Or mouth.)
I did not like kimchi when I was younger. It was too smelly. All that garlic. And what is the deal with ea...

Mondegreens [1]
Everybody has surely heard or sung a Mondegreen before, but nobody really knows they are called that.
Mondegreens are misheard (and mis-sung) lyrics. If you want to know the history of why they are called that, I am sure there are plenty of YouTube videos and websites that will tell you. All I am going to say is that I am glad they have a name. It makes me sleep easier knowing that misheard and mis-sung lyrics are really called MONDEGREENS.
The reason I am writing about mondegreens is th...

Thanksgiving 2021
There is always something to be thankful for. Thanksgiving 2021 is no exception.
My mom passed away this fall. So did one of my aunts. Yet even with funerals and memorials and adjusting to life without them, I still have lots to be thankful for. Lots.
I am most thankful for my parents. They were wonderful people. People with flaws to be sure. But they were always there for us. They taught us that our family is there for each other regardless of how much we have hurt each other. They ...

“Defecate” Is a Tremendous Word
The word defecate is a tremendous word.
I like to think about words. I know. Not necessarily a strange thing for a writer. After all, writers should have good command of the language they write in. For instance, English is not Latin, so you can actually end sentences with prepositions and nobody cares. Except those who were taught by old time teachers who imposed their Latin rules on English writing.
At any rate, having a good vocabulary is part of having a good command of language you a...

The Constitution Even Defends a Culture of Blame
Regardless of our current culture of blame, I am thankful for veterans and active duty personnel who vow to defend the United States Constitution for all people.
Veterans Day is November 11. It is not just a day off from work. It is a day to remember. To remember those veterans who have served in the U.S. military to uphold and defend the Constitution of these United States. To remember those who have fallen. To remember that there is a price for freedom. There are others who have fought ...

Starting Sentences with “Which”
Sometimes I break the rules of writing by accident, but usually it is on purpose.
I used to like to break the rules of writing when I was younger. Just to do it. Just because I figured I could get away with it. Just because they told me not to. It was all great fun. My favorite rule to break was starting sentences with because. I am not even sure why that was my favorite rule to break. Perhaps it was just to be contrary. I do not know. However, I do know that I stopped doing it because...

Digital Photographs
Digital photographs wreak havoc on the psyche.
I have already written my complaint about digital photographs, but it has hit me square in the jaw again. Digital pictures of loved ones are too real. And they do not fade with time.
Back in the old days, pictures would get discolored with age. They would get a yellow hue to them. Their edges would get beat up with handling if they were not in an album. They would get cracks and creases in them too. In other words, pictures would show their a...
