Remembering Arnie Tyler, Sr.
Photo courtesy of Teresa Tyler York
It is track and field (T&F) season, which means our team is making its annual trek to Yakima for the Holder Relays. Which used to mean that I would get my annual throwing clinic from my friend and Washington State Track and Field Coaches Association hall of fame coach , Arnie Tyler, Sr. Sadly, this year and in the years to come, I will only get to remember my friend.
(It is funny how life comes full circle. Arnie was a teacher at my high school. I never h...

Surreal Unmasking
While unmasking might be the ultimate game show gimmick, it can surely be surreal in real life.
The state of Washington (along with most of the country) recently made masks voluntary. People do not need to wear masks if they so choose. And I appreciate and respect people whether they choose to unmask or to stay masked. Or whether they let the situation dictate their face coverings.
Choosing to unmask or stay masked is not the surreal part.
The surreal part of the whole unmasking thing was th...

People’s Whole Faces
As we go to a less restrictive policy on mask wearing, it is interesting to see people’s whole faces.
If you did not already know it, noses and mouths are an integral part to people’s faces. And of course, nobody wants to have them taken away. But that is what we have done for the past two years. We have taken away most people’s noses and mouths. Which has wreaked havoc on our personal facial recognition systems.
If you have not noticed, people have amazing facial recognitions systems. Of ...

Hot Water
Speaking of creature comforts…
If it’s not one thing, it’s another. When it rains it pours. Murphy’s Law is so true. If you have been keeping up with my life as shown in my blog, you know that we lost heat in our house for about a week or so. Turns out that was not the only heater that failed in the last few weeks. Good ol’ Murphy. It seems you can always count on him to show up when things go wrong.
(By the way. If you are not familiar with Mr. Murphy, he apparently said that everything...

Heat!
Heat is not something that we should take for granted.
I must admit that living comfortably in my house has caused me to take things for granted. Clean running water to drink and bathe in (not at the same time). A nice bed to sleep in. And heat to bask in. (Yes. I like to end sentences with prepositions. Take that, English language usage police.) But like everything that we take for granted, we realize that we have been taking those things for granted when they go away. Even for just a ...

The Word PALINDROME
When they were thinking up words to describe words (and phrases) that are spelled the same forward and backward, they ought to have come up with a palindrome.
Palindromes are great. Whether they are words, phrases, or even numbers or dates, they are fascinating. But I have a beef with the creators of the word. After all, shouldn’t a word that describes words (and phrases) that are spelled the same forward and backward be spelled the same forward and backward?
I understand that the word palin...

Tuesday TwosDay (Tuesday 2/22/22)
Today is Tuesday TwosDay. Crazy.
There will not be another TwosDay for a hundred years. Which is crazy in and of itself. But today is actually a Tuesday as well as being TwosDay. Crazier still.
I actually never thought of Tuesday TwosDay until today. Okay. Some unnamed person who lives in our house may have mentioned that TwosDay is 22% off at some local craft store. Probably only on selected items.
Still, all twos in the date! That is just crazy. Regardless of whether you slice it mon...

More Palindromic Dates
We are coming to a string a palindromic dates. Ten, in fact. So I figured I could not pass up commenting on them (although I missed a string of them last year).
I know I have already written about palindromic dates, but I thought I would write at least one more post. After all, if an academic can study numeric palindromes (see Seattle Times article), I ought to be able to muse about them.
It seems odd in a way, but numbers can be palindromes too. And they ought to be recognized like palindr...

Comments [1]
“I never comment. Nope.”
At least one of my cousins reads my blog. At least on occasion. I know this because he left a comment. “I never comment. Nope.” Which is of course, not the truth. As soon as you say never, you just need one instance to contradict the statement to make it false. Which means that a comment saying you never comment is an untruth right from the beginning. It is irony. And the obvious contradiction of irony makes it funny. But even though I am not funny, I do like...
