Book review now posted!
Hello, Write Edge readers! I’ve posted my latest book review for you. Today I share my thoughts on the horror short Jack O’Dander by Priya Sharma. Here’s the opening to my post:
A woman grapples with the disappearance of her sister years earlier, only to have to face her darkest nightmare when that sister returns. Author Priya Sharma tells this story with ease of prose while also fitting it squarely within its genre in her newest short from publisher Tor, Jack O’Dander.

Hello, Write Edge readers! The temperatures here in Central Illinois have taken a turn and become decidedly fall-like. It’s jacket weather!
It’s the second Monday of the month, which means I write a short story in second person. Here’s an excerpt of my latest fiction:
The cinder girl doesn’t complain. In a way, you think, she understands how life is so much easier for her. She knows her situation could be so much worse. And so do you. Which is why, even though sometimes it pains you, only the harshest of words for her leave your mouth.

Last week on Instagram, I posted my #bookreviewpreview of what I’m reviewing on The Write Edge Bookshelf. This Wednesday I’ll share my thoughts on Jack O’Dander, a short by Priya Sharma. Missed previous reviews? Check them out on my book review blog now!

Newest book review now up!
Hello, Write Edge readers! I’ve posted my latest book review for you. Today I share my thoughts on Coleman Hill by Kim Coleman Foote, which I teased on Instagram for Friday’s #bookreviewpreview. Here’s the opening to my post:
In the early 20th century, as Black families start leaving the south in droves in the Great Migration, two families make their way to New Jersey and find themselves leaning on one another for support. That support leads to an impulsive decision that will turn the friends into enemies, and the consequences will fall down through generations. Author Kim Coleman Foote leans heavily on her own family’s experiences to create this “biomythography” in the well-intentioned but meandering book Coleman Hill.

Also, if you’re in the Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, area around October 20, come and listen to me talk about my own newest release, In the Heart of the Linden Wood. The rockstar mother-daughter duo of Olivia and Wendy, owners of Litchfield Books in Pawleys Island, SC, have invited me to do an author visit and talk on October 20 at the wonderful Caffe Piccolo just down the ways from the bookstore. Your ticket includes lunch at an amazing venue and the chance to ask me anything you want about books, writing, and publishing. Find out more by clicking here!

Hello, October!
Good afternoon, Write Edge readers! It’s the beginning of October, which means we’re officially into the last quarter of the year. How has it zipped by so quickly?
Because it’s the first Monday of the month, I’ve posted an original haiku for you. I have to say, I’ve really started enjoying writing these little three-line poems. The challenge to compress an entire world/thought/story into 17 syllables has been a fun puzzle to try to crack every month. I know some are probably better than others, but I’m happy to keep trying to make them all as good as possible.
Today’s haiku has a direct connection to today’s date, which for the South Asian diaspora is the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi. Different people have different opinions on Gandhi’s contributions to India and how history should view him. I’ve tried to compress some of that into three little lines. Read my original poem on The Write Edge Writing Workshop now and let me know what you think.
Last week on Instagram, I shared my latest #bookreviewpreview with you for this Wednesday’s review. In the middle of the week, I’ll post my thoughts on Coleman Hill by Kim Coleman Foote. The book is billed as a “biomythography,” and I’ll let you know how I feel about that term and the book itself on Wednesday. Missed previous reviews? Check them out now on The Write Edge Bookshelf!
Finally, it’s back to Instagram on Friday. You’ll get a glimpse into my writing and non-writing lives (life? I don’t know, I still can’t decide if they’re two separate things or not.) In any case, if you’ve missed previous posts, you can find them on Instagram with my handle, @EktaRGarg, or on my Facebook author page.

Book review now up!
Hello, Write Edge readers! I’ve posted my latest book review for you. Today I’m sharing my thoughts on the memoir A Hard Silence by Melanie Brooks. Here’s an excerpt from my review:
The book travels back and forth in time, portraying some of the sense of reeling Brooks dealt with from the time her family received the news, through her father’s heart-crushing death, and the years since. … The result is a memoir that brings readers right into the huddle of pain Brooks experienced in all her years of silence.

The last week of September!
Good evening, Write Edge readers! Can you believe we’re gearing up for the last quarter of the year already? Some days feel like they drag on, but when I find myself staring at the calendar I realize the weeks are slipping by faster than I can track.
In any case, it’s the last Monday of the month and that means our writers’ showcase. Today I’m sharing one piece of nonfiction and three of fiction. Check all of them out on The Write Edge Writing Workshop now!
For this week’s book review, I’m going back a couple of weeks to a post from Instagram where I did a #bookreviewpreview of A Hard Silence by Melanie Brooks. I didn’t get to publish the review the week following that Instagram post, so you’ll get it this Wednesday. Find out what I thought of this memoir on The Write Edge Bookshelf!
And, at the end of the week, Instagram! It’s the end of September, so there’s no telling what I’ll get up to this week, but you’ll be able to catch a few glimpses on Friday. Missed previous posts? Find them on Instagram with my handle, @EktaRGarg, or go to my Facebook author page.

New book review posted!
Happy Wednesday, Write Edge readers! I didn’t get to post my short story on Monday, but I couldn’t let the day end without sharing the book review I promised in last week’s #bookreviewpreview on Instagram. Today I’m sharing my thoughts on I Am Kavi by debut novelist Thushanthi Ponweera. Here’s the opening to my post:
A young girl in a Sri Lankan village gets the opportunity to study in an elite school in the country’s capital. As she battles the politics of being the new girl, the country’s politics swirl around her. Author Thushanthi Ponweera uses the novel-in-verse technique, which lessens the importance of the story she’s telling, in her debut book I Am Kavi.
