Hi Kelley! I've looked on your tumblr, twitter, Facebook, etc. and i cant find anywhere if you mention that you'll do a third series in the Darkest Power/Darkness Rising trilogy's. If you have then i missed it! P.S. i love both series plus WOTOW
I was planning to do a third trilogy in that world and actually was contracted to, but…well, there are various reasons I’m not.
1) Readers really didn’t like me switching from Chloe to Maya. I change narrators all the time in my adult books with minimal reader complaint, but it was vastly different for the YA. I still hear regularly (three years later!) from readers who won’t even try the Maya books because they want more Chloe and seem to think if they hold out long enough, I’ll be forced to write more. It, um, doesn’t work that way. I’m a storyteller, not a story factory. I run on inspiration and if I feel I’ve taken characters as far as I can for the time being, I have to write new stories with new characters.
2) I was struggling to come up with ideas for a third trilogy. More than I’ve ever struggled before.
Combine those two—lack of ideas plus fear of only reigniting reader anger (what? TWO narrators wasn’t good enough? you’re adding a THIRD now?) and I realized I had to do something completely different for my next three books, which is Sea of Shadows. For more on what I do plan to do with Chloe/Maya, read the next couple of answers… I had three on the general topic in a row, so I’ll spread out my response :)
Just want to say I'm a big fan of the Otherworld series and I'm excited to see what the tv interpretation of Bitten will be like. I know this is something you've most likely been asked a number of times, but where do you get your inspiration from and what
"Where do you get your inspiration" is really one of the toughest questions for an author to answer, because the reply seems so vague. It’s "everywhere" Seriously. If one has been writing as long as I have (since childhood) then the ideas come from everywhere. They never stop coming. The tough part is picking the ones to use!
I don’t have a better answer for why I write paranormals, either. I always have. Even my earliest stories had some element of that. For me, it’s like asking why I love chocolate chip cookies :) Always have and always will. It’s just a matter of taste.

I am a writer and it has always been my dream one day to get published so I was wondering if you could let me know how you got into the publishing world and any advice as well. Thanks!
How to get into the publishing world? Well, there was a study in Business Insider yesterday that listed “creative writer” as the 2nd most competitive job. Which might suggest it’s not easy :) There’s also no secret back door. You do the work. That’s it. You write and you write until you have a book that publishers want, and then you keep writing more books that they want. Sounds overly simplistic and vague, but there’s no other way to do it. Write a book. Edit it. Get feedback. Edit more. Submit. Start another book as you await the inevitable rejection letters. Rinse, repeat until published.

Brazen: eRelease Bookmark Contest!
Brazen is now out in eBook. You’ll find all the links for it here. According to Subterranean Press, the hardcover book is at the printer and will start shipping next week but if you know how this works, you know that doesn’t mean “expect to see your copy next week.” It’s a small staff working diligently to package & ship the books, and it takes time! But it’s coming. Very soon.
In the meantime, to celebrate the release of the eBook, I’m running a contest. Some of you may have heard about my Brazen bookmarks. Before I explain, I’m going to warn that the rest of this post contains spoilers for Thirteen. If you haven’t read it and don’t plan to read Brazen until you do, stop here.
The bookmarks are gone! Giveaway over!

.
Still with me? Okay, so the bookmark is Malcolm wearing a Team Jacob shirt. Because he would. You’ll see it to the right. I’m going to give away 75 of these (and you’ll get a random 2-3 other bookmarks with it.)
Two ways to win.
One, send me your receipt or order acknowledgment—either the eBook or print copy will do. I’m not picky about what you send. Anything that proves you bought or ordered a copy.
The first 65 people to send a proof of purchase will get bookmarks.
Not planning to get Brazen? I’ll still send you a bookmark if you’re one of the first 10 to request it.
To enter, email contest@kelleyarmstrong.com
Deadline: giveaway closes when they’re gone :) And that happened a few hours after I posted this. So the giveaway is over. If you requested the bookmarks and we received it after they were gone, Alison will let you know. Thanks to all who entered!
My contests are always open to everyone, everywhere. One bookmark per person.
When is your Cainsville app coming out in Canada??? Btw thanks for being a great author and person! Not many people would do multiple hour long signings!! You rock!
It’s out! Yeah, you probably asked this months ago. Sorry! As for the signings, do you know how nice it feels to see those lineups? I remember my first signing, when I sold two books, both to people who felt sorry for me. I did enough of those that I will never complain about the length of a signing line :)
Is there anywhere i could read all the darkest powers short stories? (Dangerous, Divided, Disenchanted, Belonging and Facing Facts)
They’re all in eBook form (Darkest Powers Bonus Pack 1 & 2) The first four were free online for a long time. That’s the trick—I put them up free as a thank you to longtime readers who follow me on social media, and then after a while, I take them down and sell them because, well, kids. Three of them. They’re expensive :)
This question has been bugging me ever since I finished reading The Rising. At the end, Maya said that the builders had built one more house for someone that had yet to show supernatural abilities. It's been driving me crazy because I've got no clue who
Neither do I. But I’ll figure it out. Eventually :)
