I was planning to do a third trilogy in that world and actually was contracted to, but…well, there are various reasons I’m not.
1) Readers really didn’t like me switching from Chloe to Maya. I change narrators all the time in my adult books with minimal reader complaint, but it was vastly different for the YA. I still hear regularly (three years later!) from readers who won’t even try the Maya books because they want more Chloe and seem to think if they hold out long enough, I’ll be forced to write more. It, um, doesn’t work that way. I’m a storyteller, not a story factory. I run on inspiration and if I feel I’ve taken characters as far as I can for the time being, I have to write new stories with new characters.
2) I was struggling to come up with ideas for a third trilogy. More than I’ve ever struggled before.
Combine those two—lack of ideas plus fear of only reigniting reader anger (what? TWO narrators wasn’t good enough? you’re adding a THIRD now?) and I realized I had to do something completely different for my next three books, which is Sea of Shadows. For more on what I do plan to do with Chloe/Maya, read the next couple of answers… I had three on the general topic in a row, so I’ll spread out my response :)
