Omens is Out! Book Birthday Giveaway
Omens is out now! Which is a relief. I’ve been at an awkward career stage, when everything I’ve been working on (Cainsville, Blackwell Pages, Age of Legends) is a new series, meaning I’ve been unable to talk about a work-in-progress for the past 2 years!
Omens is my 23rd book, so to celebrate I’m going to give away 23 copies of…other titles. Yeah, I don’t actually have anywhere near 23 copies of Omens so this will be a backlist contest.
Prizes: Forbidden trade hardcover (5), Spellcasters omnibus paperback (3), 13 UK hardcover (2), 13 Canadian paperback (2), Thirteen US paperback (2) Loki’s Wolves hardcover (2), Amityville Horrible limited hardcover (2), Darkest Powers omnibus paperback (1), Men of the Otherworld US hardcover (1), Becoming limited hardcover (1), Counterfeit Magic trade hardcover (1), Monster’s Corner trade paperback (1),
How to enter: email contest@kelleyarmstrong.com, tell me which prize you’d like, and name all 22 of my previous releases. Note that I’m counting only full-length novels. For example (and as a hint) by this reckoning, there are 13 books in the Otherworld series.
Twenty-three entries will be drawn from all correct answers received. Remember to tell me which prize you want—we’ll be drawing in pools (eg. 5 winning entries that asked for Forbidden, 3 that asked for Spellcasters and so on) If you don’t specify or list > 1 prize, you’ll be disqualified.
Deadline: midnight Eastern Friday, August 23. Not sure what that is in your time zone? Check here.
My contests are always open to everyone, everywhere. One entry per person.

WRITERS ON WRITING; Easy on the Adverbs, Exclamation Points and Especially Hooptedoodle — by Elmore Leonard
flpl:
Novelist Elmore Leonard has died at age 87. If you’re a writer, there’s a good chance you’ve encountered the New York Times article in which Leonard shared his ten rules for writing (of which there are really 11). Or, at least, you’ve probably seen this one:
10. Try to leave out the part that readers tend to skip.
You can read the full article here.
What do you think about Elmore Leonard’s writing rules?
Sorry to hear this! I’ve used that rule in my writing workshops MANY times. I use his list too, of which I agree with about 50% :) but either way (agree or not) they make great discussion points.

Hello, I'm curious about the next time you'll be in Toronto as I have yet to be able to connect to a signing or reading and would like to try to manage it if possible this year. It doesn't matter to me which book you're promoting as I read everything you
I’ll be there today…but not for a signing :) Yeah, that doesn’t help, does it? Over the next couple days, though, after Omens is out tomorrow, I’ll be hitting Toronto bookstores and signing stock, so there will be plenty of signed books left in my wake even if I don’t have a public event. But I will have them in Oshawa Sunday and Cambridge Sept 12. Details here.

How do I know if I won? Would you email me? Or just post it?
Answering a few questions today, partly to chisel away at the heap and partly because it’s a release week and I’m likely to be busy & forget my daily answer!
For all contests, the winner is emailed (it should say that in the posts—that the winner is emailed and I post the name after I hear back…if I remember to) I have never run a contest without notifying the winners directly!
Will we ever find out what happened to Simon Bae's mother? Where is she?
She could turn up, but she’s really not important to the story. She left. Simon’s dad would have cushioned that for him, but Simon knows, and he’d say it doesn’t bug him, but of course it does. He has a great dad, though, so he counts himself lucky in that and tries not to think about his mother.
