Editing, editing, tra la la

I have started my edits. I love writing Gary-Lissa dialogue. Many are the LOLZ. For me anyway. Let's hope I don't end up only amusing myself!

Manuscript surgery

Tonight, I am meeting with one of my beta-readers to go over their comments and feedback. John's got a brilliant eye for structure and has already highlighted a couple of issues which I think I had a sneaking suspicion about anyway. I'm partly all "OH NOES!" and partly looking forward to going through his comments and then taking a scalpel to Walking Shadows to cut off the excess. I know some parts I really love are going to have to go, but they are throwing out the balance of the whole.

Of co...

Cobra +1

I forgot to mention - TIm said he'd like to see Cobra Starship too, so I've bought a ticket for him too. <GRIN>

Melbourne Fringe: Beowulf

It was always going to be hard to do better than The Hamlet Apocalypse for our second night of Fringe, but I have to say that Felix Nobis and Ross Daniels kept the standards high. Daniels is a comedian who spent an hour doing various characters/impersonations - he's a sharp observer of people and had some great characters. His GenY character, Zach, had me just about crying with laughter in his phone conversation about how his Dad is so lame and full of epic fail, and trying to work out whethe...

Petra gets in touch with her instincts

Last night we were watching an episode of that gorgeously filmed documentary about Yellowstone National Park. Half way through it, TIm said; "Look at Petra!". She was sitting on the arm of the sofa, staring rigidly at the screen. Transfixed, the way she gets when she sees birds fly past the window.

Now, Petra mainly ignores the TV. Since we bought the widescreen one she pays a little more attention to it - the movement catches her eye more now. But generally she'll glance up and apparently thi...

Melbourne Fringe: The Hamlet Apocalypse

We broke the Melbourne Fringe ice on Saturday night with two shows. My thoughts on "Speaking" are better left unspoken, but the first show - The Hamlet Apocalypse - was brilliant. I suspect I may have seen the best show of the festival already!

The premise is that six actors are performing Hamlet. They keep breaking out of character to tell the audience about themselves: the way they perceive their characters, the reason they became actors, what they want their last act on earth to be. The act...

All's right with the world

Tim is home - exhausted and still ill from a nasty cold he had when he left Australia 10 days ago. But home!

Petra, so sooky while he was away, is now her usual self - affectionate but not overly clingy. This is because finally she has the full complement of ape-like creatures to attend to her every need should she require us.

As far as she is concerned, everything is as it should be.

I pretty much concur. :)

KittySpam!

Someone incautiously suggest I picspam you with pics of Petra. I've uploaded a bunch of photos into a Kitty Gallery and am previewing a selection here. KITTYPICSPAM!

Okay, I very nearly posted all of them here. I hope this entertains you. Go and investigate the gallery if pictures of my beautiful cat do it for you.

Urgent update - Narrelle loves her cat.

Around a year and one week ago, our kitty Petra broke her leg. It was such a bad break, which refractured after her first 6 weeks in confinement, that she ended up living in a cage in the living room of our two-bedroom flat for three months. She handled it with more grace and less stress than either Tim or I did.

But here we are, a year down the track, and you would never know she had been injured, except that she's a bit more timid about going out into the corridor. That's a good thing, for ...

The mechanics of inspiration - my Continuum 5 Guest of Honour speech

The following is an edited version of the Guest of Honour speech I gave at Continuum 5 in August 2009. It won’t be exact partly because, although I made notes for my speech, I do have a habit of wandering away from my notes to make ad hoc observations and comments. I have included the excerpt from various novels to demonstrate how I’ve used some of these ideas and observations in my work.

The reason I chose the topic -  Where do you get your ideas? – was largely because it struck me that...
