Freewrite – the Linux-powered, E-ink, Mechanical keyboard writing machine

This is the Freewrite.  It has a mechanical keyboard, an e-ink screen, WiFi for document syncing, USB-C for file transfer, incredibly long battery life, and it’s powered by Linux.  I show you the basics of how to use it and my overall thoughts on this rather unique device.

TRS-80 Model 102 – Hands on with one of the 1st “laptops”

Hands on with a Radio Shack / Tandy TRS-80 Model 102.  One of the first laptop computers.  Ever.  32k of RAM.  Runs for 20+ hours on AA batteries.  Mechanical keyboard that is a joy to type on.  Built-in 300 baud modem.  A truly fascinating device that is, crazy enough, fairly usable in 2018 — over 30 years after it was built.

LinuxFest Northwest 2018 Preview

A preview of LinuxFest Northwest 2018 — taking place April 28th and 29th in Bellingham, Washington.  I am joined by one of the conference organizers, James Mason, to talk about some of the great speakers lined up — along with the game room, the conference party, the robotics, and all the other fun stuff happening in this free-to-attend weekend of Linux nerdiness.

Nothing is Secure and We are All Doomed

There are so many insecure ways we transmit our data that — in effect — nothing is secure.  And fooling ourselves into thinking otherwise is dangerous.  Let me walk you through a quick list of all the highly insecure methods of data transmission that are not likely to be secured any time soon.

FreeBSD outlaws virtual hugs

The FreeBSD project — an Open Source operating system — has added a fun new item to their Code of Conduct: they now expressly forbid “virtual hugs” (such as an animated .GIF of a teddy bear hugging a kitten) without prior consent.  This is true.  This is not a joke.  And that makes it way, way funnier.

Tech as Religion

Technology as religion.  More specifically: Individual pieces of computer tech treated as infallible religion.  Do we, as computer nerds, have specific bits of code that are treated as “Sacred Cows?”  You bet we do.  And it’s pretty stupid.

HTTPS is Dangerous

HTTPS, the “secure” form of HTTP, is dangerous.  Seriously.  That may be an unpopular position, but there are some critical issues with HTTPS — and the fact that it is being forced on all website operators — that should raise everyone’s eyebrows.  Poor design.  NSA backdoors.  Serious, freaky problems.
