Linux Thursday – Mar 15th, 2018 – “Nice Things About Microsoft Edition”
It’s Thursday! And that can mean only one thing… Linux Day on the Lunduke Show! Where you decide what we talk about… as long as it’s at least a little Linux-y! This week we took a boat-load of hypothetical questions about Linux an the greater Open Source and Free Software worlds… and end by saying nice things about Microsoft, FreeBSD, an Mozilla. Seriously. This happened.

Microsoft is buying control of Linux
Microsoft is buying control of Linux. At least as much as any one company can actually do. They are purchasing (with big sacks of cash) influence over some of the most critical and high profile Linux and Open Source organizations on the planet. Is this good? Is this bad? Is this a step on the road to “Embrace, Extend, Extinguish”? I’ll leave that up to you to decide… but it’s definitely happening.

Microsoft headlined a major Linux conference
Earlier today (March 10th, 2018), Microsoft delivered the headlining keynote of the Southern California Linux Expo — one of the largest Linux and Free Software conferences in the world. I repeat: Microsoft. Headlined. A Linux Festival. It was confusing to many. And Microsoft did not disappoint… they managed to say some distinctly anti-Open Source things in their 1 hour on stage.

Linux Sucks: The Commentary Track
This is the commentary track for Linux Sucks! Huzzah!
Ways to get it:
Patreon – Become one of my monthly supporters on Patreon.com (at any level) and you can download the DRM-free video at your leisure.
Donate via PayPal – Pay what you want. Name your price. Toss me any amount you like (by clicking right here), and you’ll get an email with the DRM-free video. Got a buck? That’ll do. Got a million? Also perfectly acceptable.
Includes:
Behind-the-scenes stories about the 2016 Linux Sucks
Anecdotes about some of the guests that appeared in that years show
Richard Stallman
Piers Anthony
Cory Doctorow
Red Hat CEO Jim Whitehurst.
Normally I release my videos for free. Not this one.
I’m treating this as a sort of fund-raiser for future live events — like the next Linux Sucks, taking place at LinuxFest in April of 2018. The money raised by this commentary goes directly towards camera and recording equipment upgrades and travel expenses.
If you want to help with those things — or you are simply a Linux Sucks mega fan — you can pitch in a few bucks and get your copy from Patreon or PayPal.
Both options are great. Both options help support the show. Patreon is a bit better for you (as it also gives you access to the other Patreon perks like the monthly Q&A), but everything helps and is awesome.
Thank you for your support — I hope you enjoy the commentary!

Linux Thursday – Mar 8th, 2018 – “Career in Linux Edition”
It’s Thursday! And that can mean only one thing… Linux Day on the Lunduke Show! Where you decide what we talk about… as long as it’s at least a little Linux-y! This week almost all of the questions were focused on how to build a career in Linux and Open Source. Which, as luck would have it, we know a little something about.
Note: Lunduke’s audio gets a little quiet for a few moments in the later part of the show. For some reason the audio got auto-adjusted (it’s set to not do that… but the computer ignored our wishes). We caught it pretty quickly, luckily.

CopperheadOS — Secure(-ish), Non-Google Android
CopperheadOS is a version of Android that is stripped of ties to all Google services, with features focused on security and privacy. One of my buddies from over at OpenNMS sent me a Nexus 6p — one of the few fully supported phones for Copperhead — to really give it a good testing. This video isn’t so much an “in depth review” as me recounting my experience, along with my personal tips and recommendations for how to get the most out of a CopperheadOS powered phone.

Divisive Politics are destroying Open Source
Divisive Politics are destroying Open Source. Many Open and Free Software projects have been ripped apart, just in the last year, by politics that seem to serve no purpose other than to divide us as people. I take a look at three recent, and noteworthy, examples: FreeBSD, Node.js (part of the Linux Foundation), and Mozilla. Three organizations that have a massive impact on our lives (even if we don’t know it) — that have had divisive politics cause significant turmoil and damage to not only themselves… but the entire Open Source and technology world.

“The Oregon Trail” Handheld – Unboxing, Hands-on, Tear-apart
“The Oregon Trail”. In your hand. With a color screen. Powered by AA batteries. For $25. I picked up one of these devices (the night before their official release) and took it home. Then recorded me unboxing it. Playing it. And then ripping the thing apart to see what makes it tick.
Some of the shots of the screen are out of focus. Sorry about that. I was in a hurry and excited to play with this and didn’t spend enough time setting up the cameras.
Interview with creator of the Freewrite (Linux, Mechanical writing tool)
In yesterday’s episode I reviewed the Freewrite (a Linux-powered, mechanical keyboard, e-ink writing machine). It left me feeling highly conflicted. So now we’re talking to the creator of the Freewrite to talk about all of my thoughts and get a little more insight into this quite funky gadget.
