Microsoft releasing Linux-based Operating System

Microsoft has announced that they will be releasing their own Linux based Operating System.  That’s right.  Microsoft now has a Linux Distro of their very own.  It will be focused on Internet of Things (IoT) type devices and called “Azure Sphere OS”.  I cover everything I’ve been able to find out about Microsoft’s Linux OS — which is mostly just creepy, non-technical information thus far.

Why I don’t use HTTPS on my website

I don’t use HTTPS on some of my websites — and I’ve gotten a fair bit of flak for that.  But I have two very good (in my opinion) reasons for sticking to plain old HTTP in some cases.  It all boils down to retro computing and technology that doesn’t expire.  Watch the video before you yell at me (this really shouldn’t be that controversial).

How to fix Facebook and Twitter

Facebook and Twitter have some problems.  The root cause is that these companies have made us, their users, into their products.  I take a hard look at their yearly financial statements and lay out a mathematically sound way to change their business model — resulting in services that respect our privacy and allowing them to maintain profitability.

Linux Thursday – April 12, 2018 – “Games and Shirts Edition”

It’s Thursday!  And that can mean only one thing… Linux Day on the Lunduke Show!  Where you decide what we talk about… as long as it’s at least a little Linux-y!  This week we took a boat-load of questions — sent in via email — about Linux and Free Software.

Being Always Online is Weird

Let’s face it: Being always online (connected to the Internet) is a very, very weird thing.  Over the last few weeks I’ve been using my computers more like I would have in the late 1980’s: No walking around with a tablet.  No wireless networking on my laptop.  No cellular data on my phone.  The result is that I’m only connected to the Internet for periodic bursts throughout the day.  And it’s been absolutely glorious.

FBI seized Backpage.com – and the new website is WEIRD

This last week, the FBI (along with multiple other agencies) seized the website Backpage.com.  And the website that the government agencies put in place is… really, really weird.  Just downright ODD.  Because I find this interesting I pick apart the “website has been seized” page they put in place (including the HTML, the image, and the whois information) — if, for no other reason, than to document the way the US government does such things.

Should Tech Conferences Blacklist Speakers Based on Politics?

Is it a good idea for technology conferences to remove or blacklist presenters based on politics?  Either the politics of the speaker or the politics (or perceived politics) of their employer?  This just happened — GitHub removed a CTO of a government agency, as a speaker at an upcoming GitHub conference, after some people expressed anger at the agency (ICE).  Put your personal politics aside for a moment… and let’s talk about the general idea of tech conferences taking these actions.

Drool-worthy System Config Ideas – 1 Petabyte (1,024 TB) of flash in a 1U and more

I gave a list of system configuration requests provided by you (including building a dedicated firewall/switch, ultra-quiet storage server, and how to store 1 petabyte of data) to Paul Bibaud over at Pogo Linux. He picked a few that jumped out at him… and the configuration ideas he came back with were crazy fun — including a way cram over a petabyte (1,000 TB) of SSD into a single 1U unit.

4k Video is Dumb. Filmed in 480p, Black & White to prove it.

4k video is dumb.  (At least for most purposes.)  So many people put fancy-pants production quality before their content… that it makes the production quality all but pointless.  I also debunk the fallacy that “Linux can’t produce successful video.”  That idea is just ridiculous.
