You know it’s a great book when you have to keep reminding yourself that the characters are not real people. I really cared about Ruby, and she gave me some bad moments. Ruby, Between the Cracks
Ruby, Between the Cracks, was awarded a place in the Top Ten Books for Teens 2015.
Winner of Top Ten Books for Teens award by In the Margins Committee, 2015.

If you asked Ruby, she’d tell you she’s happy with her life. She’s tough and independent and doesn’t depend on anyone else. But things aren’t as rosy as she would have everyone believe, and the road ahead of her is filled not only with gangs, drugs, and depression, but other challenges that Ruby hasn’t even imagined.
June & Justin
Justin already failed June once. He wasn’t there when she needed him, and because of him, their lives will never be the same. Justin must protect June at all costs. But it seems they are always falling behind, barely keeping one step ahead of the nightmares.
Michelle
When Michelle asked to be taken away from her abusive mother, she never expected to lose everyone she loved in the process. They said they would keep her and Kenny together. Her daddy said he would be back, but he wasn’t. All too soon, they are forced to reunite her with their mother, and Michelle is forced to take to the streets, seeking safety in the gang life.
Chloe
Chloe had known for a long time that she was two people. The Chloe who watched and the Chloe who experienced. She had been watching for so long, she wasn’t sure she could feel anything anymore. But if she can’t overcome her past and start living in the real world, she knows she will lose herself forever.
Ronnie
Ronnie was the one child in the Simpson family to escape from the abuse and grow up in a normal home without being bounced from place to place or ending up on the street.
That was what the others all thought. That was what Ronnie told herself. When Ronnie could remember.
June Into the Light
Getting clean is just the first of June’s challenges, and as difficult as it is, may be the easiest part.
The path ahead is filled with so many obstacles she can’t see her way through to the other side. Facing her children and convincing them that she has really changed and is capable of a healthy relationship with them seems like an insurmountable task.
– The Between the Cracks books have been absolutely AMAZING… as soon as I started to read “Ruby”, I just had to keep going.
– I wish I could forget the book Ruby and read it all over again.
– This book is utterly amazing, I find myself having more empathy for children in these types of situations than ever before. My heart seriously yearns for them. I can’t put this book down.
“We are thrilled with the second year of this important work finding relevant books for our communities that validate, illuminate and humanize those living in the margins. We have a great list, bringing to national attention books that add to diversity in our collections and world,” said Amy Cheney, Chair of ITM. “The committee members and I are excited to share these books with you for those living and interested in the margins of society.”

“Every single one of [P.D. Workman’s] books has spoken to me in ways no one or almost anything else has. And I have found strength in the books I’ve read.”
“The way that P.D. Workman writes just flows amazingly and allows the reader to get really invested in a book.”
“This is one author I certainly will be looking out for, I can’t recommend her enough.”
“I’ll read anything by P. D. Workman that I can get my hands on.”
“Every book by PD Workman that I’ve read has been a gripping one, however different the genres are, going from lighter mysteries to really dark ones… this is one of my favourite, most dependable authors.”
“P.D. Workman is an incredibly versatile writer. No matter which of her books I read I am drawn into a great story and honestly, I don’t think I’ve followed another author that could go from cozy mystery to YA to a PI series dealing with mental health issues. Really enjoy her books!”
“[P.D. Workman’s] stories are so believable and you can’t help but feel like you know these people. You find yourself crying, laughing and feeling the characters emotions. Now if an author can make you cry and feel every emotion in a story, she is one hell of an author.”

Fail, Medical Kidnap Files #6 and Other New Releases

It is release day for Fail, Medical Kidnap Files #6. If you are not familiar with the series, it is about the children who fall victim to the practice of social services apprehended children due to medical conditions practice, their families, and a small group of teens who are fighting back! Follow Gabriel and Renata as they fight against an unfair and corrupt system, trying to save themselves and others from the doctors, social workers, and judges who endanger rather than protect their charges.
@media screen and (min-width:768px){.stk-8fd7e47{flex:1 1 calc(66.7% - var(--stk-column-gap,0px) * 1 / 2 ) !important}}FailThis time, it’s one of their own!
After working underground to reunite apprehended teens with their parents for as long as they have, Gabriel and Renata have seen it all. But this time, it’s personal. When the young children of one of the families who have helped with the movement are seized, they prepare to do whatever it takes to have them returned before more damage can be done.
While Carmel and her family have been staunch supporters of the underground movement, they had never revealed their own experiences with DCFS. Now their history and their alliance with Gabriel and Renata have come back to haunt them.
A family torn apart.
Two innocent children being used to even the score.
It’s time to bring them home.

I found this book to be relevant, well-written, and thoroughly absorbing, if not a bit unsettling. P. D. Workman never fails to engage, enlighten, and entertain with her spellbinding stories and this book is no exception.

Highly recommended! I’m decades past being a “young adult” and find the books in this series to be riveting. They are expertly crafted, with well developed characters and intriguing plots. I enjoyed this book and am looking forward to the next in the series.
Looking for something new in young adult literature? A fast-paced adventure with diverse characters that will keep you turning the pages.

The case was never solved. Now that Brynn is moving home and starting her dream internship at a true-crime show, she’s determined to find out what really happened.
The kids who found Mr. Larkin are her way in, and her ex–best friend, Tripp Talbot, was one of them. Without his account of events, the other two kids might have gone down for Mr. Larkin’s murder—but instead, thanks to Tripp, they’re now at the top of the Saint Ambrose social pyramid. Tripp’s friends have never forgotten what Tripp did for them that day, and neither has he. Just like he hasn’t forgotten that everything he told the police was a lie.
Digging into the past is bound to shake up the present, and when Brynn begins to investigate what happened in the woods that day, she uncovers secrets that might change everything—about Saint Ambrose, about Mr. Larkin, and about her ex-best friend, Tripp Talbot.

Looking for some back to school reads? Take a look at my blog post Anxious Going Back to School.
Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme. Read the rules and more teasers at The Purple Booker. Anyone can play along.
I am reading Crashed by Timothy Hallinan this week. Junior Bender is a burglar, not a private investigator, so maybe I can’t properly classify it as hard-boiled or noir. But the atmosphere, language, and descriptions are as colourful as any Sam Spade. The characters are fun and described well. This twisty little mystery is a great read so far, I will definitely read more of the series.
And then, just to make the moment more special, another dog, big enough to take the other three like aspirin, shouldered its way into the hall with a growl so low it rattled the crystals in the chandelier.
Timothy Hallinan, Crashed
Junior Bender, a burglar with a magic touch, is being blackmailed into taking on a new freelance job. One of LA’s biggest crime bosses is producing a porn movie that someone keeps sabotaging; Junior’s job is to figure out who’s responsible and keep the movie on track.
The trouble is, he’s not sure he can go through with the job, blackmail or no blackmail. The actress lined up to star in the film, Thistle Downing, is an ex-child star who now lives alone in a drug-induced stupor, destitute and uninsurable. This movie would be scandalous fodder for tabloids around the country. Junior knows what he should do—get Thistle out and find her some help—but doing the right thing will land him on the wrong side of some scary people.

Anxious Going Back to School?

I have been out of school for long enough that I no longer have school nightmares every August/September anymore. But it took a number of years being away before those dreams faded!
There can be a lot of excitement over moving into higher grades or a new school, seeing friends you have been separated from over the summer and finding out what they did, and getting new clothes or school supplies (I love my notebooks and pens!) But also a lot of anxiety over new teachers, difficult subjects, locker combinations, finding your way around a new school, remembering a locker combination, and many other challenges. These days, there may be additional anxiety over being around other people with the threat of COVID.
Children may experience nightmares, behavioural problems, bed wetting, have headaches or stomachaches, or other symptoms.
So what can you do to help your kids (or yourself) feel better going back to the classroom?
Encourage them to talk about it. Let them know they aren’t the only one feeling anxious and afraid. Sometimes it is easier to talk in the car or on a walk. Try to be calm and relaxed yourself. Kids can sense when you are stressed and reflect your feelings.Help to dispel anxiety over the unknown. Talk about the new routines, bus or walking routes, where their classroom is, and whatever else you can find ahead of time. Rehearse when possible. Role play challenging situations. Talking to friends and new teachers, dealing with bullying, asking for help.Try some relaxation exercises — visualization, deep breathing or box breathing, progressive muscle relaxation.Encourage exercise, including vigorous activity, good sleep habits, and a healthy diet. Seek professional help when necessary. If symptoms persist and are affecting their quality of life, seek a qualified professional for counseling and possibly medication. How about escaping to some great books?

She was a broken bird
He was a mender of wings
Parker’s mother always said he jumped into things without thinking first, and that’s exactly what he did when he saw Dakota, cold and hungry, fending for herself on the city streets. How could he ignore the pain and fear in her dark eyes? Dakota was eager to go to school and she made friends quickly, eager to make up for a dismal childhood full of deprivation and abuse by enjoying every moment she could.
But there was something wrong with Dakota. It wasn’t just the hollowness in her eyes or her traumatic past. Others sensed it too and warned Parker not to get too close to Dakota. But despite his questions, he just can’t help falling for her.
Dakota holds her secrets close, and Parker is worried that if he pushes too hard for answers, she’ll just run away.

Her books show us real kids facing scary real-life problems in the modern world. Her work is both an invitation to empathy and a cautionary tale.

Is Justine crazy?
Everyone thinks so…
Her mother. The kids at school, and the teachers and administrators too. Even the police who pick her up from her night rambles. Maybe them most of all.
Justine’s therapist says she is ‘troubled’, but it means the same thing. He thinks that her vivid, reoccurring nightmares and atrocious behavior point to some trauma in her past; but Em, Justine’s mother, can’t explain it.
Justine used to have Christian, her best friend and skateboard partner. He was the only one who accepted her. Maybe because skating is the only time that Justine is really free to be herself. Now that Christian is gone… Justine keeps thinking things can’t get any worse.
Even as she sees her life spinning further and further out of control, Justine can’t give up her sense of who she is—someone far different than the loving daughter Em expects her to be—to just fit in and be happy. She is sure that Em secretly holds the key to who Justine really is. But if she does, Em isn’t talking.

The portrayal of Justine felt very true to me. I had a troubled childhood and youth myself and I really identified with Justine’s feelings, words, and actions. Some of the things Justine said and did were things I said and did when I was her age. The characters felt very three-dimensional and real. The story pulled me in and I just had to know how it ended! I swayed back and forth in my opinions about all the characters and was very satisfied with how everything played out in the end.

As he waits for the monster who is his father to die, a chance encounter brings Elizabeth and her baby into his protective circle. But is Elizabeth as lost and innocent she seems to be? Or has her own experiences turned her into something else?
As he learns more, Leo wonders whether he can help Elizabeth or if he is messing around with something beyond his ability to manage.

It made me cry a lot, I felt sorry for the male protagonist in this book for all the trouble that his parents put him through. I can also understand that he had a hard time as an adult with trying to trust people when you go through what this young man and his siblings went through it just amazes me that they could even function in life and not let it get them down. I will read more by this author in future.

Disowned by his family, living on the street, battling abuse and prejudice, he struggles to discover who he really is and how to carry on with life.
The last person you would expect to touch him is Roz, whose foremost identity is a Christian wife and mother. But her world is about to be shaken. Through all that happens, Roz understands she has to be there for Taylor, knowing he is only one step from despair and self-destruction.
Absolutely loved this book, I sure hope there’s a sequel. Taylor’s life is so interesting I need to know more…
Reading Taylor’s journey from parental abuse, to the group home, to peer abuse is heartbreaking, inspiring and such a great read giving opinion and fact from the religious to the scientific spectrum. A great read and so well written.
“[P.D. Workman’s] stories are so believable and you can’t help but feel like you know these people. You find yourself crying, laughing and feeling the characters emotions. Now if an author can make you cry and feel every emotion in a story, she is one hell of an author.”
“She has a real handle on some of the terrible things that life hands out. One awful thing is man’s inhumanity to man. The worst is man’s inhumanity to children…”
Start on a journey of discovery with Taylor and Roz today.

Looking for some exciting reads about prison breaks? Check out my blog from last week for some fresh book ideas to add to your to be read pile.
Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme. Read the rules and more teasers at The Purple Booker. Anyone can play along.
This week’s read is Cat Under Fire, the second book in Shirley Rousseau Murphy’s Joe Grey Mystery series. I’ve read a couple of other books in the series. They’re a lot of fun. Murphy’s cats do break a few physiological rules as well as being anthropomorphic speaking and thinking cats. They see in colour. They sweat. And, of course, they solve murders. Most of the humans are not too stupid, but they don’t seem to have the same drive to track down the killers as Joe and Dulcie.
And Dulcie was possessed not only with the murder itself, but with trying to discover, as well, what made humans kill so wantonly.
Shirley Rousseau Murphy, Cat Under Fire
A big, powerful, gray feline, Joe Grey is perfectly content with his remarkable ability to understand and communicate with humans — especially now that he has company. A mysterious accident similar to the one that enabled him to speak and read has transformed his friend Dulcie as well. The trouble is, the cute tabby female not only hears human words, she believes them.
Now she’s convinced the man who was jailed for murdering a famous local artist and burning down her studio is innocent — simply because he says so — and she’s willing to do whatever it takes to dig up the evidence that will exonerate the accused. Joe would much prefer just lazing around the house doing kitty things, but the lady cat is determined. And Joe must admit that he is curious … though everyone knows what that can lead to!
