Get Swept Away by Fallen

Last week I published a blog post on Camp Nanowrimo, which is going on right now. All the best to my writerly friends who are participating in this worldwide event. Writing can be lonely, difficult business, and those who are doing is deserve our support.

As far as my Nano goes, I just crossed 50K, so have officially met my challenge, but will continue until I am finished the first draft of Posed for Death.

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme. Read the rules and more teasers at The Purple Booker. Anyone can play along.

Fallen, by Linda Castillo is book #13 in the Kate Burkholder series. I always enjoy these mysteries with a little taste of Amish country, with tidbits about their culture and phrases of Pennsylvania Dutch sprinkled throughout. Kate does a good job of tracking down the killers with her special combination of brains, compassion, and respect for the community that she chose not to be a part of, instead pursuing a career in law enforcement. Her significant other, John Tomasetti work well together. I enjoy a book where the woman and the man are on equal footing and don’t have a lot of conflict or competitiveness over cases. (Though, of course, I also enjoy books where there is some conflict between the couple as well. Since all couples have conflict of some kind.)

I’m no stranger to violence of the unspeakable things human beings are capable of doing to each other.

Linda Castillo, Fallen

When a young woman is found murdered in a Painters Mill motel, Chief of Police Kate Burkholder is shocked to discover she once knew the victim. Rachael Schwartz was a charming but troubled Amish girl who left the fold years ago and fled Painters Mill. Why was she back in town? And who would kill her so brutally?

Kate remembers Rachael as the only girl who was as bad at being Amish as Kate was—and those parallels dog her. But the more Kate learns about Rachael’s life, the more she’s convinced that her dubious reputation was deserved. As a child, Rachael was a rowdy rulebreaker whose decision to leave devastated her parents and best friend. As an adult, she was charismatic and beautiful, a rabble-rouser with a keen eye for opportunity no matter who got in her way. Her no-holds-barred lifestyle earned her a lot of love and enemies aplenty—both English and Amish.

As the case heats to a fever pitch and long-buried secrets resurface, a killer haunts Painters Mill. Someone doesn’t want Rachael’s past—or the mysteries she took with her to the grave—coming to light. As Kate digs deeper, violence strikes again, this time hitting close to home. Will Kate uncover the truth and bring a murderer to justice? Or will a killer bent on protecting a terrible past stop her once and for all—and let the fallen be forgotten?

Looking for a police procedural set in picturesque Canada? Let Award-winning and Bestselling Author P.D. Workman take you to her favourite Calgary parks, as Métis detective Margie Patenaude investigates a murder in this fast-paced new series.

Detective “Parks” Pat — Margie Patenaude — is a new Calgary homicide detective. Being Métis and a single mom, she has a few things on her plate. Working on a spate of murders in Calgary and area parks earns Margie her nickname.

These short mysteries are just right for those days when you could use a break from your busy life. Take a walk in a Calgary park with Parks Pat

Immersed in the View

Detective “Parks” Pat is back. Now an established and accepted member of the homicide squad, she unexpectedly brings a new case to the table when she stumbles across a body as Canada Day dawns. While it was initially assumed to be an accidental drowning, the autopsy results say otherwise.

Skimming Over the Lake

It’s Parade Day, and Margie would have thought that any trouble would have centered around drinking and motor vehicles. Or being trampled by horses. Or clowns. But the latest homicide investigation is nowhere near the parade route, but on the outskirts of town. And the culprit appears to be a tiny boat.

Hazard of the Hills

A woman is found at the bottom of a 70-meter drop. It is pretty clear from the beginning that she was killed in the fall.

But you can never be sure until the medical examiner’s report comes back. It would appear that there is a lot more to be investigated after all.

Investigate this new series today!

This promises to be a wonderful series with fantastic characters, interesting locations, and fascinating glimpses into different cultures. The story is of novella length and can easily be read in one sitting if so desired, there is no offensive language, no sex, no graphic violence – just a whopping good story everyone can enjoy.

I am enjoying this new series. The first book was good and this one was even better. Love the characters and the storyline. Can’t wait to read book number three in this series.
—Kandy, Goodreads

I feel like I’m visiting Calgary, Canada and the parks where the murders are taking place in all three books so far. There are vivid descriptions of the park and the wetlands. Margie and her family are woven throughout along with their ancestry which adds a nice touch.
—Joanne, Goodreads

I love these stories. Short, exciting and not really predictable, as many short stories are. Plots are well-developed, characters are interesting, and there’s plenty of local lore and history.

Author Notes may contain spoilers!

I was working on a collaborative project with another author when we came up with an idea for murders that took place in provincial parks. After my involvement with the creation of the Glenbow Ranch Provincial Park, I was quite excited about the idea. That project ended up not going anywhere, but I had already scheduled the time to write it, so I decided to take a run at murders that took place in Calgary area parks on my own.

I had been thinking about setting something locally for a while. Most of my stories are set in the USA, which always means doing extra research into those little details like weather and climate, foliage, animal life, and sunrise and sunset times, as well as cultural aspects such as speech/colloquialisms, dress, demographics, jobs/industry, government, and more.

Setting a series in Calgary, I could take advantage of my knowledge and experience living here. I walked through the parks with my husband, scouting out various places where bodies could be found and features of the park that might come into play. I took pictures and immersed myself in the settings. We tried to be careful not to talk too loudly about body dumps or murder around other park visitors, and luckily didn’t have any actual Calgary police officers coming to our door asking what we were up to!

“Every book by PD Workman that I’ve read has been a gripping one, however different the genres are, going from lighter mysteries to really dark ones… this is one of my favourite, most dependable authors.”

“P.D. Workman is an incredibly versatile writer. No matter which of her books I read I am drawn into a great story and honestly, I don’t think I’ve followed another author that could go from cozy mystery to YA to a PI series dealing with mental health issues. Really enjoy her books!”

“[P.D. Workman’s] stories are so believable and you can’t help but feel like you know these people. You find yourself crying, laughing and feeling the characters emotions. Now if an author can make you cry and feel every emotion in a story, she is one hell of an author.”

It’s Camp Nanowrimo Time Again

National Novel Writing month comes only once a year, but you can always join Camp Nano in April and July too. If November is not good for you (the month before Christmas… some people are rather busy) or if you want to write several books during the year, then it’s a great way to connect with other likeminded writers and join in the camaraderie.

I really enjoy those three months when there are other crazy people doing what I do, writing a novel in a month. People I can talk to about it who don’t just roll their eyes and think that I’m nuts. Or doing something impossible.

For July 2022 Camp Nanowrimo, I am working on book #6 in the Kenzie Kirsch Medical Examiner series, tentatively titled Posed for Death.

Chronologically, this book will come after book #13 in the Zachary Goldman Private Investigator series, They Came for Him.

Getting old shouldn’t be a death sentence

Kenzie thought she had a pretty good understanding of aging and elder care. She was a medical professional, after all. But when her postmortem findings cause her to look more deeply into the sometimes dark world of elder care, she is forced to reconsider.

When she starts asking questions about legislation and regulation, things get nasty.

Kenzie could just do what she’s told and stop asking questions.

But when was the last time she did that?

⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ P.D. Workman never fails to deliver an intriguing mystery with plenty of thrills, drama, and unexpected twists that will hold your attention from start to finish. The characters are believable, with flaws and attributes that will endear them to the reader. The stories always have, at their heart, socially relevant topics that are explored with compassion, intelligence, and dignity.

If you are a reader of the Zachary Goldman Mysteries series, you have already met Kenzie Kirsch. This series is a spinoff from Zachary Goldman Mysteries, giving Kenzie a front-and-center position in solving medical mysteries.

Looking for a strong female lead in an engaging medical mystery? Award-winning and USA Today Bestselling Author P.D. Workman brings you an up-and-coming Medical Examiner’s Assistant who is right up your alley.

Join Dr. Kenzie Kirsch as she uncovers mysteries, conspiracies, and thrills!

Suspended at Hairpin Bridge

I hope you enjoyed my birthday last week! Some of the books in my birthday blog post will still be on sale, so head over and grab them while you can.

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme. Read the rules and more teasers at The Purple Booker. Anyone can play along.

If you’re looking for suspense, check out Hairpin Bridge by Taylor Adams. Protagonist Lena Nguyen is looking for answers in the death of her twin sister. She suspects police corporal Raycevic of being complicit in her death—even being the direct cause of it.

And there is definitely something going on with Raycevic. He is not all he seems to be. He is hiding some pretty big secrets and I’m not convinced that a single word that comes out of his mouth is the truth. Lena has her work cut out for her in sorting it all out.

I don’t think I’ve read anything else by Taylor Adams. I only see a couple of other books on Amazon. But I would definitely check out others.

Don’t get comfortable. Don’t let your guard down.
Not even for a second.

Taylor Adams, Hairpin Bridge

Three months ago, Lena Nguyen’s estranged twin sister, Cambry, drove to a remote bridge seventy miles outside of Missoula, Montana, and jumped two hundred feet to her death. At least, that is the official police version.

But Lena isn’t buying it.

Now she’s come to that very bridge, driving her dead twin’s car and armed with a cassette recorder, determined to find out what really happened by interviewing the highway patrolman who allegedly discovered her sister’s body.

Corporal Raymond Raycevic has agreed to meet Lena at the scene. He is sympathetic, forthright, and professional. But his story still seems a bit off. For one thing, he stopped Cambry for speeding just an hour before she supposedly leaped to her death. Then there are the sixteen attempted 911 calls from her cell phone, made in what was unfortunately a dead zone.

But perhaps most troubling of all, the state trooper is referred to by name in Cambry’s final enigmatic text to her sister: Please Forgive Me. Lena will do anything to uncover the truth. But as her twin’s final hours come into focus, Lena’s search turns into a harrowing tooth-and-nail fight for her own survival—one that will test everything she thought she knew about her sister and herself…

Where is The Vanishing Man?

Looking for some books for Indigenous Peoples Day? Check out my blog post from June 21.

If you are looking for some great deals, now is the time to check out Books for my Birthday!

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme. Read the rules and more teasers at The Purple Booker. Anyone can play along.

I wasn’t sure which book to pick this week, but have decided on The Vanishing Man by Charles Finch. First, let’s clear up a few confusing things about the listing for this book. First… it isn’t about a vanishing man. It is about the theft of a work of art, which is the clue to a larger mystery. Unless the title is referring to the man in the painting, which really isn’t the crux of the mystery, so I’m not sure.

Secondly, Amazon lists it as a prequel to the Charles Lenox Victorian series, which is odd when it is book #12 in said series. The Woman in the Water is also referred to as the prequel to this series, and in fact says so on the cover, yet it is book #11 in the series. Perhaps Charles Finch has been writing them in reverse order and his publisher hasn’t gone back to fix the descriptions of the previously published books, I don’t know. It is confusing, but there you go.

I have read another book or two in this series. As mentioned, Charles Lenox is a Victorian sleuth, the first or one of the first private investigators of this time. He is high born and cannot be a policeman or be paid for his investigations because of the impact on his and his family’s reputations, so he operates on a sort of a favours system that I don’t really understand.

But hiring practices aside, Charles Lenox is an interesting protagonist, finding his way into a new profession and figuring out the ropes and new investigative techniques from various different circumstances, books, and people. In this case, he is searching for the Duke’s stolen painting, which is the key to a much larger mystery. Lenox has to unravel the various half-truths and hints to figure out what is really going on, since the Duke doesn’t actually seem interested in recovering the paining.

“I think it probably the least valuable painting on the wall,” said the duke, with an odd satisfaction. “Even if it were not stolen but freely sold by its owner, myself, its worth would not exceed fifteen or twenty pounds at auction.”

Charles Finch, The Vanishing Man

London, 1853: Having earned some renown by solving a case that baffled Scotland Yard, young Charles Lenox is called upon by the Duke of Dorset, one of England’s most revered noblemen, for help. A painting of the Duke’s great-grandfather has been stolen from his private study. But the Duke’s concern is not for his ancestor’s portrait; hiding in plain sight nearby is another painting of infinitely more value, one that holds the key to one of the country’s most famous and best-kept secrets.

Dorset believes the thieves took the wrong painting and may return when they realize their error—and when his fears result in murder, Lenox must act quickly to unravel the mystery behind both paintings before tragedy can strike again. As the Dorset family closes ranks to protect its reputation, Lenox uncovers a dark secret that could expose them to unimaginable scandal—and reveals the existence of an artifact, priceless beyond measure, for which the family is willing to risk anything to keep hidden.

In this intricately plotted prequel to the Charles Lenox mysteries, the young detective risks his potential career—and his reputation in high society—as he hunts for a criminal mastermind.

Wands In A Lifetime includes the first 3 books in the Spellbound paranormal cozy mystery series–

Curse the Day (Book 1) The only magic Emma Hart believes in is caffeine and the power of the dryer to lose one sock per load. A public interest lawyer buried under a mound of student debt, Emma’s whole life has been one turn of bad luck after another. Her streak seems to continue when she gets lost on the way to see a client in the remote Pocono Mountains. A chance encounter with a suicidal angel lands her in Spellbound, a town where supernaturals have been cursed to remain for centuries–probably not the best time for Emma to discover that she’s actually a witch. Between the recent murder of the town’s public defender, a goblin accused of theft, remedial witch classes, and the attention of one smoking hot vampire, Emma struggles to navigate this unfamiliar terrain without losing her mind…or her life.

Doom and Broom (Book 2) Emma Hart hasn’t had a moment’s peace since her arrival in Spellbound. Her fear of heights hits an all-time high when she’s tasked with mastering a broomstick. It doesn’t help that Lady Weatherby seems determined to make basic witch training feel more like the magical ninja warrior championships. When a werewolf is found dead and Daniel is named as the prime suspect, Emma takes the initiative to prove that the angel’s halo is firmly intact, once again stepping on the hooves of the cranky centaur, Sheriff Hugo. The heat is on as Emma struggles to get a grip on her broomstick and identify the killer before it’s too late. Spell’s Bells (Book 3) When a sleeping dwarf is found entombed in a glass coffin and remedial witch Sophie is blamed, Emma Hart must defend her friend while trying to get to the bottom of the enchantment. The investigation lands Emma smack dab in the middle of Spellbound’s dating scene, where plenty of the town’s residents are eager to make her acquaintance. Emma knows it’s time to kick her witchy skills up a notch if she expects to survive Thursday night speed dating and keep sweet Sophie from a life in paranormal prison. Spell’s Bells is the third book in the Spellbound paranormal cozy mystery series.

Books for National Indigenous Peoples Day

June 21 is National Indigenous Peoples Day. A day to explore the history and cultures of the indigenous peoples of this land, to join in celebrations and memorials.

You may be interested in my quick summary of Indigenous Peoples in and Around Calgary.

And what observance would be complete without books? there is more and more call to write books with diverse characters from all walks of life. Different races and backgrounds, disabilities, neurodiversity, and more.

Because this is Indigenous Peoples Day and I am not of an indigenous background, I will flip my usual blog format and put #ownvoices first, with my books at the bottom.

I have read a couple of books about indigenous experiences the last few months. I have written about A Stranger at Home and From the Ashes in my regular Teaser Tuesday blogs.

Traveling to be reunited with her family in the arctic, 10-year-old Margaret Pokiak can hardly contain her excitement. It’s been two years since her parents delivered her to the school run by the dark-cloaked nuns and brothers.

Coming ashore, Margaret spots her family, but her mother barely recognizes her, screaming, “Not my girl.” Margaret realizes she is now marked as an outsider. And Margaret is an outsider: she has forgotten the language and stories of her people, and she can’t even stomach the food her mother prepares. However, Margaret gradually relearns her language and her family’s way of living. Along the way, she discovers how important it is to remain true to the ways of her people — and to herself.

Highlighted by archival photos and striking artwork, this first-person account of a young girl’s struggle to find her place will inspire young readers to ask what it means to belong.

Abandoned by his parents as a toddler, Jesse Thistle and his two brothers were cut off from all they knew when they were placed in the foster care system. Eventually placed with their paternal grandparents, the children often clashed with their tough-love attitude. Worse, the ghost of Jesse’s drug-addicted father seemed to haunt the memories of every member of the family.

Soon, Jesse succumbed to a self-destructive cycle of drug and alcohol addiction and petty crime, resulting in more than a decade living on and off the streets. Facing struggles many of us cannot even imagine, Jesse knew he would die unless he turned his life around. Through sheer perseverance and newfound love, he managed to find his way back into the loving embrace of his Indigenous culture and family.

Now, in this heart-wrenching and triumphant memoir, Jesse Thistle honestly and fearlessly divulges his painful past, the abuse he endured, and the tragic truth about his parents. An eloquent exploration of the dangerous impact of prejudice and racism, From the Ashes is ultimately a celebration of love and “a story of courage and resilience certain to strike a chord with readers from many backgrounds” (Library Journal).

Recommended by an author friend of mine. Speculative fiction incorporating MesoAmerican themes

A god will return
When the earth and sky converge
Under the black sun

In the holy city of Tova, the winter solstice is usually a time for celebration and renewal, but this year it coincides with a solar eclipse, a rare celestial even proscribed by the Sun Priest as an unbalancing of the world.

Meanwhile, a ship launches from a distant city bound for Tova and set to arrive on the solstice. The captain of the ship, Xiala, is a disgraced Teek whose song can calm the waters around her as easily as it can warp a man’s mind. Her ship carries one passenger. Described as harmless, the passenger, Serapio is a young man, blind, scarred, and cloaked in destiny. As Xiala well knows, when a man is described as harmless, he usually ends up being a villain.

Crafted with unforgettable characters, Rebecca Roanhorse has created a “brilliant world that shows the full panoply of human grace and depravity” (Ken Liu, award-winning author of The Grace of Kings). This epic adventure explores the decadence of power amidst the weight of history and the struggle of individuals swimming against the confines of society and their broken pasts in this “absolutely tremendous” (S.A. Chakraborty, nationally bestselling author of The City of Brass) and most original series debut of the decade.

Combining graphic fiction and non-fiction, this young adult graphic novel serves as a window into one of the unique dangers of being an Indigenous teen in Canada today.

The text of the book is derived from excerpts of a letter written to the Winnipeg Chief of Police by fourteen-year-old Brianna Jonnie ― a letter that went viral and was also the basis of a documentary film. In her letter, Jonnie calls out the authorities for neglecting to immediately investigate missing Indigenous people and urges them to “not treat me as the Indigenous person I am proud to be,” if she were to be reported missing.

Indigenous artist Neal Shannacappo provides the artwork for the book. Through his illustrations he imagines a situation in which a young Indigenous woman does disappear, portraying the reaction of her community, her friends, the police and media.

An author’s note at the end of the book provides context for young readers about Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls in Canada.

Since its creation in 1876, the Indian Act has dictated and constrained the lives and opportunities of Indigenous Peoples, and is at the root of many enduring stereotypes. Bob Joseph’s book comes at a key time in the reconciliation process, when awareness from both Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities is at a crescendo.

Joseph examines how Indigenous Peoples can return to self-government, self-determination, and self-reliance–and why doing so would result in a better country for every Canadian. He dissects the complex issues around the Indian Act, and demonstrates why learning about its cruel and irrevocable legacy is vital for the country to move toward true reconciliation.

In an urgent and visceral work that asks essential questions about the treatment of Native people in North America while drawing on intimate details of her own life and experience with intergenerational trauma, Alicia Elliott offers indispensable insight into the ongoing legacy of colonialism.

She engages with such wide-ranging topics as race, parenthood, love, mental illness, poverty, sexual assault, gentrifcation, writing and representation, and in the process makes connections both large and small between the past and present, the personal and political—from overcoming a years-long battle with head lice to the way Native writers are treated within the Canadian literary industry; her unplanned teenage pregnancy to the history of dark matter and how it relates to racism in the court system; her childhood diet of Kraft Dinner to how systemic oppression is directly linked to health problems in Native communities.

Taken from their families when they are very small and sent to a remote, church-run residential school, Kenny, Lucy, Clara, Howie and Maisie are barely out of childhood when they are finally released after years of detention.

Alone and without any skills, support or families, the teens find their way to the seedy and foreign world of Downtown Eastside Vancouver, where they cling together, striving to find a place of safety and belonging in a world that doesn’t want them. The paths of the five friends cross and crisscross over the decades as they struggle to overcome, or at least forget, the trauma they endured during their years at the Mission.

Fuelled by rage and furious with God, Clara finds her way into the dangerous, highly charged world of the American Indian Movement. Maisie internalizes her pain and continually places herself in dangerous situations. Famous for his daring escapes from the school, Kenny can’t stop running and moves restlessly from job to job—through fishing grounds, orchards and logging camps—trying to outrun his memories and his addiction. Lucy finds peace in motherhood and nurtures a secret compulsive disorder as she waits for Kenny to return to the life they once hoped to share together. After almost beating one of his tormentors to death, Howie serves time in prison, then tries once again to re-enter society and begin life anew.

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme. Read the rules and more teasers at The Purple Booker. Anyone can play along.

The Stranger in the Mirror by Liv Constantine is not the only suspense book about amnesia that I have read lately. It’s not that long since I was reading You Will Remember Me. Amnesia is not an uncommon trope in suspense fiction, even though forgetting your entire past is pretty rare in real life. Like serial killers, it happens a lot more in fiction than in real life.

The Stranger in the Mirror does include some unique twists, and I still am not sure where it is going. Addison apparently has a pretty scary past, but we haven’t been filled in yet on what happened and how she lost her memory. As we enter Addison’s life, she is preparing to marry Gabriel, who she has known for six months (and yes, the author actually does cover how Addition came to have identification that allows her to work and to get married, two things that are impossible to do if you can’t prove who you are.)

I am just at the point when Addison has met someone from her old life (or, from what I can tell, her interim life) and am looking forward to finding out how she got where she is today, and who she goes home with in the end!

Looking inward is too painful when there’s nothing much to see.

Liv Constantine, The Stranger in the Mirror

Addison’s about to get married, but she’s not looking forward to the big day. It’s not her fiancé; he’s a wonderful man. It’s because Addison doesn’t know who she really is. A few years ago, a kind driver found her bleeding next to a New Jersey highway and rescued her. While her physical wounds healed, Addison’s memory never returned. She doesn’t know her real name. Or how she ended up injured on the side of a road. Or why she can’t shake the notion that she may have done something very, very bad . . .

In a posh home in the Boston suburbs, Julian tries to figure out what happened to his loving, caring wife, Cassandra, who disappeared without a trace two years ago. She would never have left him and their seven-year-old daughter Valentina of her own free will—or would she?

As these two lives intersect, The Stranger in the Mirror hooks readers with riveting drama, told with Liv Constantine’s hallmark blend of glamour, tense psychological thrills, and jaw-dropping twists.

Who cut out Crazy Theresa?

Erin once again finds herself sandwiched between a friend and her partner’s police investigation when Willie Andrews is accused of killing Crazy Theresa Franklin.

Willie couldn’t have done it.

At least, Erin doesn’t think so.

He isn’t talking to her about it, or to anyone else. There are plenty of other people who might have killed Crazy Theresa. She had enemies. But which one had managed to catch her off guard?

And can Erin ensure that one of her friends does not end up in prison for it?

⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ The writing is very skillful, with a multi-layered plot and believable, well-developed characters. Highly recommended!

Erin Price moves to Bald Eagle Falls, a place where everyone knows everyone as well as everyone else’s business, taking over the store left to her by her aunt to start up a gluten-free bakery. The grand opening is marred by just one thing, the death of her business rival, Angela Plaint. It appears that Angela was poisoned by one of Erin’s cupcakes, making her a prime suspect.

Equipped with cupcakes, her desire for the truth, and new bakery assistant Vicky’s help, Erin goes head-to-head against Detective Terry Piper to solve the murder. Rumors of treasure hunting, drug dealing, and a missing boy swirl around Bald Eagle Falls as Erin tries to sort the clues from the red herrings and find the killer before the killer can take care of her.

⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ P.D. Workman has done it again! This introduction to a new series involves a fresh start, sympathetic characters, and a murder. I spent the last ten minutes of the book standing up to read because I was off to do something but just couldn’t put it down until I got to the end. Summer 1911. A scorching heatwave engulfs the quiet town of Littleton Cotterell and brings about an unusually early harvest. The villagers are thrilled, but events quickly turn sour when one of them turns up dead in an apple orchard, stabbed through the heart.

The daring duo uncover whispers of an ancient order and moonlit rituals. And evidence points to a macabre secret in the village stretching back years. Take a trip to Compass Cove, an enchanted town full of magic and mayhem…

Zora Wick’s magic lessons can sometimes be more dangerous than the murderers she captures, and as she learns more about magic’s dark history, she starts to find missing puzzle pieces from her own mysterious past.

Where did her mother vanish to all those years ago? Why does it feel like she’s closer than ever before? Who is the strange and enigmatic wizard behind the Sisters of the Shade, the dark coalition of witches intent on recruiting Zora?

Compass Cove brews up more trouble as well when another body turns up, and with a murderer on the loose Zora has no choice but to spring into action again and solve the mystery. The only problem is that the police are already convinced they’ve caught the killer, a close friend of Zora’s who would never hurt a fly.

That would be enough, but with one of her guardians away dealing with pack politics, Zora is left with his strange and unusual replacement, Niles. She might be slightly less paranoid if someone wasn’t messing with the magical boundaries keeping dark witches out of the town—there seems to be a traitor among Zora’s ranks, but can she figure it out and survive before the enemy takes everything from her?

Game, Set and Murder

For some reason I find hard to understand, humans like to play a game called tennis. Basically it involves hitting a ball with something called a racket and inducing it to fly across a net. The person on the other side then proceeds to hit the ball back across that same net. And so on and so forth, ad infinitum. Or at least until someone strikes out, and the other person wins the set, or even the game, and eventually the match.

It’s all very complicated, and not all that interesting, not to say utterly boring, and so when Marge and Tex went on their annual tennis retreat with some of their friends from the tennis club, I mainly saw this as an opportunity to catch up on my naptime, which had suffered greatly since my humans had decided to produce a new human in the form of a baby. Unfortunately for them, before long a murder was committed, and suspicion fell on all those present—Marge and Tex included!

And then of course there was Gran acting strange—which isn’t all that exceptional, considering strange is that eccentric old lady’s middle name—and Harriet acting even stranger, with Brutus convinced she was having an affair. In other words: I had my work cut out for me, trying to unravel everyone’s secrets and their most blatant lies.

Ex-CIA agent turned scout leader, Merry Wrath, faces her greatest challenge yet when her cranky new neighbor is convinced Merry’s cat is melting her mind from across the street. But when Merry tries to extend an olive branch in the form of Girl Scout cookies, she finds the neighbor murdered! Worse yet, the security footage puts her not-too-bright nemesis, Kevin Dooley, at the scene of the crime.

Murder wears a tin foil hat…

In spite of the fact that Kevin has been a problem since elementary school, Merry doesn’t want him to go to prison. But before she can begin to investigate, a large group of conspiracy theorists arrive and set up camp outside of town. Between the Hitler Faked the Moon Landing folks, cryptic cryptozoologists, and the Lizard People, Merry isn’t sure what to believe. And when it turns out the victim was also into conspiracy theories and was investigating a local thirty-year old child abduction, the case veers wildly off the rails.

The truth is out there…somewhere…maybe?

Who’s There, Iowa is turned upside down with a panicked aluminum foil shortage, a slew of Big Foot sightings, a goat named Olaf, a troop of little girls with questionable motives who are capitalizing on the chaos, and a whole lot of hamsters (like, a LOT of hamsters). Merry has to move fast to unravel this tangled web of lies to find the truth before the truth itself becomes another victim.

It’s murder. And with the local detective hot on their tail, an angry baking nemesis set on their destruction, and a murderer on the loose, Ruby and Bee have a tough week ahead.

A grand villa, croissants for breakfast and a dead body in the wine cellar… Lady Swift can’t seem to take a vacation from murder!

Summer 1923. Lady Eleanor Swift is finally persuaded by her butler, Clifford, to take a villa in the south of France for the season. She plans to do what a glamorous lady abroad should: long lunches on the balcony followed by lazy afternoons lounging by the pool. Even Gladstone the bulldog is looking forward to a daily paddle in the ocean.

But when Clifford examines the wine cellar, he discovers there are no decent reds but there is a very dead body. The victim is famous American movie star Rex Armstrong. Poor Rex seems to have been stabbed with a sword from the film set. So how did he end up in Eleanor’s villa?

Before Eleanor even has time to change out of her travelling suit, her beloved butler is arrested for the crime. At sea without her right-hand man, Eleanor must gather her wits if she’s to outsmart a murderer and save Clifford.

Attending a glitzy party at the luxurious Hotel Azure with the film’s cast and crew so she can question her main suspects, Eleanor overhears the director having a most unsettling telephone call that throws all her theories out of the water. Can Eleanor unmask the true killer before her time abroad is cut murderously short?
