Explore a Highland Mystery in Plaid and Plagiarism

He Drowned in Memory has been released! Check out my new release in the Zachary Goldman Mysteries and some others that you may want to pick up.

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme. Read the rules and more teasers at The Purple Booker. Anyone can play along.

I am reading Plaid and Plagiarism by Moly MacRae, book one in a series of five.

This is a nice little cozy set in the Scottish Highlands. Four friends arrive to set up house and open up a bookstore, teashop, and bed and breakfast, but all of their plans go out the window when a body is discovered in the shed. Fun characters, lots of interesting developments, and beautiful covers make this a series I am sure I will be returning to.

Jess pushed lank hair from her forehead with the back of her hand, then let the hand drop to her side. “Bring the rock if it makes you feel safer.”

Molly MacRae

A murder in a garden turns the four new owners of Yon Bonnie Books into amateur detectives, in a captivating new cozy mystery novel from Molly MacRae.

Set in the weeks before the annual Inversgail Literature Festival in Scotland, Plaid and Plagiarism begins on a morning shortly after the four women take possession of their bookshop in the Highlands. Unfortunately, the move to Inversgail hasn’t gone as smoothly as they’d planned.

First, Janet Marsh is told she’ll have to wait before moving into her new home. Then she finds out the house has been vandalized. Again. The chief suspect? Una Graham, an advice columnist for the local paper—who’s trying to make a name for herself as an investigative reporter. When Janet and her business partners go looking for clues at the house, they find a body—it’s Una, in the garden shed, with a sickle in her neck. Janet never did like that garden shed.

Who wanted Una dead? After discovering a cache of nasty letters, Janet and her friends are beginning to wonder who didn’t, including Janet’s ex-husband. Surrounded by a cast of characters with whom readers will fall in love, the new owners of Yon Bonnie Books set out to solve Una’s murder so they can get back to business.

A delightful and deadly new novel about recognizing one’s strengths and weakness—while also trying to open a new book shop—Plaid and Plagiarism is the start of an entertaining new Scottish mystery series.

Sus Manos Estaban Quietas

by P.D. Workman

Coming Soon!
Translator: Cristina García
Genres: Spanish

eBook Price: $ 5.99 USD

Also available in English.

New releases: He Drowned in Memory and more

woman reading by fire

It has been almost a year since the last Zachary Goldman Mystery was released, and it is time for some more!

Today, He Drowned in Memory, book #11 in the series is live. Zachary is out of the hospital and on the trail of his missing brother. Only there are a few surprises along the way, and maybe some things that he didn’t want to dig up from the family’s past.

He Drowned in Memory can be read as a stand alone mystery/suspense or as part of the series.

@media screen and (min-width:768px){.stk-8fd7e47{flex:1 1 calc(66.7% - var(--stk-column-gap,0px) * 1 / 2 ) !important}}He Drowned in Memory

Everybody has secrets.

And Zachary’s family was no different.

When his younger brother Tyrrell goes missing, PI Zachary Goldman is anxious to find him before something bad happens to him. Or is it already too late?

The last missing person case he investigated did not end well, and he can’t help worrying that whether Tyrrell’s disappearance was voluntary or not, he may be in harm’s way.

75% of missing adults are found within 24 hours. 95% are found within a week. But then there are the other 5%…

Zachary is determined that Tyrrell will not be one of those who never comes home.

The clock is already ticking.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Once again P.D.Workman has created an intense psychological mystery that impacts a wallop of thought induction. The writing is so well developed and draws you into the characters story … I couldn’t put this book down … I just had know how it turned out before I could finally go to sleep.
—Kat Taylor

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ This book deals with family secrets, PTSD, panic attacks, depression. It’s real life and it can be hard to read at times, yet hard to put down.
—Annmarie C. Kuyath

Zachary Goldman, Private Investigator, is flawed with a capital F. Shattered by the tragedies of his own life, he will somehow still manage to pick himself up and dig just a little bit deeper than anyone else to find the vital clues.

Maybe being broken makes it easier for others who have faced tragedy to trust him. Walk with Zachary as he solves cases that will stretch his abilities to the limit.

Even with his own life in shambles, Zachary Goldman is still the one you want on the case.

Investigate this P.I. mystery now!

Get your coffee fix with Roast Mortem

September 15 is Cozy Mystery Day. Be sure to check out my blog post and pick out some new mysteries in addition to Roast Mortem! I have a limited time sale on Auntie Clem’s Bakery 1-3. Get it before it’s too late!

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme. Read the rules and more teasers at The Purple Booker. Anyone can play along.

I am currently reading Roast Mortem, book 9 in Cleo Coyle’s Coffeehouse Mystery series. Cleo Coyle is the pen name of award-winning author Alice Alfonsi, collaborating with her husband, Marc Cerasini. It is obvious from what I have read so far that they did plenty of research to get all of the details of the firefighters and coffee-making business right. Even as a non-coffee-drinker, you might find yourself salivating over the descriptions of the perfect cups of espresso, lattes, and every other variation on coffee that you can think of.

But of course, the mystery is not about Clare’s coffee, but about the firebomb that could have killed her employer and friend, not to mention herself. With advice from her detective boyfriend and the unspoken approval of the arson investigator, Clare is on the case, determined to prove who tried to burn down Enzo’s coffeeshop.

And all the while, the perpetrator is watching *her*.

Tonight Caffè Lucia will burn. If people get in the way, it’s their own stupid fault.

Cleo Coyle, Roast Mortem

The New York Times bestselling author brews up another culinary mystery—and this time, it’s New York’s Bravest that get burned:

After local firefighters pull Clare out of a blazing café, she happily comes to their rescue by teaching them the finer points of operating their newly donated espresso machine. But matters really heat up when somebody is torching cafes around the city and firefighters begin to die in suspicious ways…

Believing the two events are related, Clare investigates, staking out a five-borough bake sale and sniffing out clues in the pizza ovens of Brooklyn. When her detective boyfriend, Mike Quinn, is pulled into the fire of a false accusation, Clare is desperate to put out the flames. But will she be able to come to Mike’s rescue before someone tries to extinguish her?

Celebrate Cozy Mystery Day

We are rapidly approaching Cozy Mystery Day!

Dame Agatha Christie’s birthday is on September 15, so that was selected as the date to celebrate cozy mysteries! Time to catch up your reading on your favourite amateur sleuths. Jessica Fletcher stumbling across another body in Cabot Cove? Miss Marple peering out her window or listening in on the latest village gossip? Erin Price moves to Bald Eagle Falls, a place where everyone knows everyone as well as everyone else’s business, taking over the store left to her by her aunt to start up a gluten-free bakery. The grand opening is marred by just one thing, the death of her business rival, Angela Plaint. It appears that Angela was poisoned by one of Erin’s cupcakes, making her a prime suspect.

Equipped with cupcakes, her desire for the truth, and new bakery assistant Vicky’s help, Erin goes head-to-head against Detective Terry Piper to solve the murder. Rumors of treasure hunting, drug dealing, and a missing boy swirl around Bald Eagle Falls as Erin tries to sort the clues from the red herrings and find the killer before the killer can take care of her.

⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ P.D. Workman has done it again! This introduction to a new series involves a fresh start, sympathetic characters, and a murder. I spent the last ten minutes of the book standing up to read because I was off to do something but just couldn’t put it down until I got to the end. I haven’t been that invested in a book in a while.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Couldn’t put it down !! From a cute kitten to a police dog to a bakery for people with allergies ! Highly recommend!

Reg Rawlins, professional con, has really gotten herself into a bind this time.

The fortune teller gig started as a scam, but she suddenly finds herself tangled up in the case of Warren Blake, a man who she thought was dead. It turns out he may still be alive, but in mortal peril.

Reg has always taken the quick exit, the easy way out, but running out on this racket might mean someone else’s death.

Staying in it might mean hers.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ It sounds like a fairly gentle story, but there is a lot of suspense involved. Add a bunch of humor to the mix and you are in for a treat … This is a story that you don’t want to put down.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ This book has all my favourite things: heart, great writing, nearly-flawless editing, something unusual in the air, and a cat.

Sweet, adorable Lacy has stolen Marcia Banks’ heart, but money is tight. Like it or not, the service dog trainer needs to complete the human phase of the training and deliver the dog to her new owner in order to get paid. But the former Army nurse client turns out to be a challenging trainee. On top of her existing neuroses–which go beyond the psychological damage from a sexual assault during her second tour in Afghanistan–the veteran is now being stalked.

When Marcia receives a bizarre warning to stay away from her client and Lacy is also caught in the stalker’s malicious orbit, Sheriff Will Haines steps in to investigate. Marcia finds this both endearing and annoying, especially when he expects her to stay on the sidelines. The training fee would make her solvent again, but how can she put her dogs at risk?

Maybe Marcia should be more worried about herself, since the stalker has decided to pay her off in a very different way.

That is, until she discovers her nemesis, Petra Sullivan, has been sleeping with the show judge–and with Abi’s boyfriend. Understandably, Abi’s upset. Might even have threatened blood-thirsty consequences.

In front of a show ring full of witnesses…

So, later, when Abi trips over Petra’s dead body in a dark alley, she knows she must find Petra’s killer–the only clue–an expensive designer dog leash knotted murderously around Petra’s neck. Or she could end up showing her wiener dog, in prison.

To help catch the killer, Abi and her two best friends, Molly, a virgin romance-writer and Dana, a ball-busting mother of two, revive their High-school sleuthing group, The Gumshoe Chicks. But when the list of suspects becomes longer than a week’s grocery list, the Chicks quickly discover that sleuthing isn’t as easy as the Nancy Drew books portray.

The local dog show world is full of angry wives, irate competitors and a Mick Dundee type guy with a yard full of man-eating crocodiles–all cheated, tricked or dumped by Petra. But which one would stupidly waste their big-ticket luxury dog leash for a murder weapon? The same one who is now determined to collar Abi?

Nero Wolfe in The Battered Badge

In September, we are observing Pain Awareness Month, a time to educate ourselves on chronic pain conditions and sufferers and to support those in our life who deal with pain on a daily basis. Check out my blog post for some resources and my fiction book on Pain.

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme. Read the rules and more teasers at The Purple Booker. Anyone can play along.

I have just finished The Battered Badge, a Nero Wolfe Mystery by Robert Goldsborough. This is the first of Goldsborough’s series that I have read, but I am familiar with the original Nero Wolfe Mystery series by Rex Stout (although noting that it is 45 books long, I suspect I have not read all of them!

The more modern series appears to be pretty true to the original. The characters, setting, and Wolfe’s daily routine were all familiar and true to Stout’s creation. No weird shifts in personality, gender, or era. In this episode, it is Cramer, the chief of homicide, who falls under suspicion, and although reluctant to investigate, Archie and Wolfe would prefer Cramer remain as chief of homicide over the alternative.

Well written. I would be happy to read any of the other books in Goldsborough’s 16 book series.

“Well, he certainly is no favorite of yours. Of course, neither is Cramer, for that matter.”

Robert Goldsborough, The Battered Badge

When wealthy and popular crusader and reformer Lester Pierce is gunned down in front of his Park Avenue residence, the public outcry forces the NYPD to restructure its homicide department. As the deceased was highly critical of Inspector Lionel Cramer, the longtime head of homicide is temporarily relieved of his badge. But it seems Cramer was not just a scapegoat: He was seen dining in Little Italy with mob kingpin Ralph Mars.

All of which amounts to little more than conversational fodder for PI Nero Wolfe and his assistant Archie Goodwin. But if Cramer’s provisional replacement, Capt. George Rowcliff, becomes permanent, Wolfe’s future dealings with the force will be much compromised. Loath to depart from his routine, Wolfe makes the unusual decision to take on a case without an actual client.

His investigation quickly points toward Pierce’s organization, Good Government Group, where high-minded idealism is often trampled under the competing ambitions of the staff—several of whom would clearly have benefited from Pierce’s demise. Despite the burgeoning list of suspects, Wolfe hasn’t ruled out the involvement of the underworld and its connection to Cramer. But in order to untangle an abundance of motives and end the inspector’s forced furlough, Wolfe may have to venture out of his comfort zone—and the premises of his brownstone.

Continuing his beloved series—which also includes Archie Meets Nero WolfeMurder in the Ball ParkArchie in the Crosshairs, and Murder, Stage Left—Nero Award–winning author Robert Goldsborough “demonstrates an impressive ability to emulate Rex Stout’s narrative voice” (Publishers Weekly, starred review).

Reading for Pain Awareness Month

As well as doing fun posts on peach pie and cherry turnovers or ice cream cones, I also discuss a lot of less-comfortable topics like human trafficking, abuse, mental illness, and so on. This is one of the less pleasant topics — chronic pain.

The US observes National Pain Awareness Month in September, initially organized by The American Chronic Pain Association. Canada observes National Pain Awareness Week in November and The Canadian Pain Task Force has a lot of good resources on their website. Since my book on chronic pain is about a child/teen, I would especially like to spotlight these resources for parents/teachers and kids:

Pain Management Apps and Online ResourcesGuide to Chronic Pain in Students

Take some time out this month to support the people in your life who experience chronic pain. There are a lot more than you would think, it is a very prevalent problem.

One story that I found really fascinating before writing Pain, Medical Kidnap Files #5, was the story of Annabel Beam, as told in the movie Miracles from Heaven. And it wasn’t just the story of the miraculous healing Annabel received after a terrible accident that interested me, but the chronic pain condition that she lived with before that and the amazing doctor that worked with her. You can learn more about Dr. Nurkel here.

What to read if you are dealing with chronic pain? While there are a lot of books that show up in searches on chronic pain, most of them do not have very many reviews, so it is hard to say which one is better than another. The exception to this observation is this one, with over 3500 reviews and an average of 4.6 stars:

@media screen and (min-width:768px){.stk-8fd7e47{flex:1 1 calc(66.7% - var(--stk-column-gap,0px) * 1 / 2 ) !important}}Pain Free

Pain Free shows readers how they can readily self-diagnose, treat and eliminate agonizing conditions such as stiff necks, sore shoulders and elbows, aching backs, hips and knees, shin splints, twisted ankles, and a variety of foot problems. Even many symptoms of arthritis can be eased, along with TMJ, severe migraine headaches, asthma attacks, and repetitive stress injuries.

In this natural, head to foot guide to musculoskeletal pain, Pete Egoscue demonstrates that the body is designed to maintain and renew itself through adequate and correct motion, and then leads the reader through brief sequences of motioncises matched to each pain symptom, combatting the root cause of the pain: motion starvation.

Each chapter covers a portion of the body vulnerable to chronic pain, leading the reader through the movements that ultimately solve the pain problem, without resorting to drugs, traumatic surgery or expensive physical therapy.

When your child is in pain, everything else takes a backseat.

Fae Glover has put everything else on hold while she tries to help her daughter to get a diagnosis and effective treatment. Unfortunately, DFS has other ideas and in short order has apprehended Hannah. And they have no intention of ever giving her back.

Gabriel and Renata are in a race against the clock to keep the family together and reunite Hannah with her mother before the court severs all of Fae’s rights permanently.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ “Wonderful well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start. Love the well-fleshed-out characters and found them believable. Great suspense and action with wonderful world building that adds so much to the story. Such a thrilling read that I couldn’t put it down.”

Cynthia Has a Secret

Cynthia Has a Secret

One day, fifteen-year-old Carmina Knight’s life was perfect, and the next, she’d lost everything. Her family, her home, almost everything that she knew. Alone on the streets, she can’t trust anyone, but she also can’t make it alone.

Neil Crowther is the investigator on the Knight case. He knows that he has to unravel the web of deceit and track Carmina down quickly, or there will be no one left to save.

It takes a while to learn Cynthia’s secret. The author keeps us in suspense, which keeps us riveted to the story. I would recommend this book to boys and girls from upper grade school to high school. This is a great story of a young girl’s struggle to survive

Stand Alone

Stand Alone

Is Justine crazy?

Everyone thinks so…

Her mother. The kids at school, and the teachers and administrators too. Even the police who pick her up from her night rambles. Maybe them most of all.

Justine’s therapist says she is ‘troubled’, but it means the same thing. He thinks that her vivid, reoccurring nightmares and atrocious behavior point to some trauma in her past; but Em, Justine’s mother, can’t explain it.

Justine used to have Christian, her best friend and skateboard partner. He was the only one who accepted her. Maybe because skating is the only time that Justine is really free to be herself. Now that Christian is gone… Justine keeps thinking things can’t get any worse.

Even as she sees her life spinning further and further out of control, Justine can’t give up her sense of who she is—someone far different than the loving daughter Em expects her to be—to just fit in and be happy. She is sure that Em secretly holds the key to who Justine really is. But if she does, Em isn’t talking.

The portrayal of Justine felt very true to me. I had a troubled childhood and youth myself and I really identified with Justine’s feelings, words, and actions. Some of the things Justine said and did were things I said and did when I was her age. The characters felt very three-dimensional and real. The story pulled me in and I just had to know how it ended! I swayed back and forth in my opinions about all the characters and was very satisfied with how everything played out in the end.

Taylor is a teen teetering on the edge of a steep precipice. Disowned by his family, living on the street, battling abuse and prejudice, he struggles to discover who he really is and how to carry on with life.

The last person you would expect to touch him is Roz, whose foremost identity is a Christian wife and mother. But her world is about to be shaken. Through all that happens, Roz understands she has to be there for Taylor, knowing he is only one step from despair and self-destruction.

⭐⭐⭐⭐ Absolutely loved this book, I sure hope there’s a sequel. Taylor’s life is so interesting I need to know more…

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Reading Taylor’s journey from parental abuse, to the group home, to peer abuse is heartbreaking, inspiring and such a great read giving opinion and fact from the religious to the scientific spectrum. A great read and so well written.

Tattooed Teardrops

Tattooed Teardrops

Winner of Top Fiction Award, In the Margins Committee, 2016.

I don’t plan on getting in any trouble.

Tamara had thought that when she got out of juvie, things would be easier. But before long, it seems like her life is spiraling into chaos.

If she can’t prove to her probation officer that she is innocent of the allegations against her, she’s going back to prison, and Tamara just can’t let that happen.

Readers will appreciate the realistic details about Tamara’s release, her issues dealing with a foster family, her emotional triggers, and the challenges facing someone trying to maintain the conditions of parole. For those teens who love books where all that can go wrong does go wrong (isn’t that almost all of them?), this is a winner.

Questing for a Dream

Questing for a Dream

Nadie is a bright, caring teen growing up Manitoba Cree growing up in abject poverty. She tries to balance school attendance, caring for her younger cousin Luyu, and spending time with handsome, impish Mouse, her best friend and confidante. Together, they strive to find the path to happiness on the reservation.

But tragedy strikes and Nadie’s is devastated by Luyu’s accidental death. Unable to find comfort in Mouse’s arms or Grandfather’s traditional mourning rites, Nadie leaves the band and strikes off on her own, searching for meaning and a new life in the outside world.

Can Nadie find happiness and a place of her own in a foreign world where she is abused and discriminated against? Completely alone for the first time in her life, it is a challenge such as Nadie has never before faced.

Easily one of the most thought-provoking and compelling reads of the year, Ms. Workman has written a masterful contemporary account of one native teen’s journey from home and the possibilities for hope even for those drowning in poverty, prejudice, and addiction. Examining hard concepts such as death, rape, abuse, neglect, addiction, and wounds passed down from generation to generation, this story is full of raw emotion that will bring the reader to tears, yet unable to put the smoothly-paced story down. With true-to-life characters both good and bad, Nadie is inspirational. It isn’t because she’s perfect but rather because she is far from it and somehow manages to find the courage in the end to become someone who can help bring her tribe forward. A must-read tale for any book lover!—Sarah E. Bradley, InD’tale Magazine

Come back to Booktown for: Not the Killing Type

I hope you caught my delicious Peach Pie and Cherry Turnover post last week! Great books and tasty looking recipes go together like… peach and pie.

Looking for a YA Book Box? Check out Time to Hit the Books Back 2 School Survival Pack.

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme. Read the rules and more teasers at The Purple Booker. Anyone can play along.

I have read several of Lorna Barrett’s Booktown cozy mystery series in the past, so was happy to return to the fictional village full of bookstores (what kind of a dream town would that be?) with Not the Killing Type, book #7 in the series. So nice to get back to Tricia, her employees Mr. Everett and Pixie, and of course her cat, Miss Marple in the Haven’t Got a Clue mystery bookstore.

Of course Tricia has again stumbled over the body of the newly-deceased and is once again at the center of the mystery, trying to figure out whodunnit at the same time as helping sister Angelica with her election campaign and preparing for the Black Friday sale. The characters are familiar and fun and I really wish I could go visit the bookstore!

*One warning note, however: I did find a fat-phobic/fat-shaming subplot in this volume that rather surprised me. I don’t remember running across anything like that in any of the other books in the series. It’s not a big part of the book, but be prepared if that might bother you.

She yanked the door open and, to her horror, found Stan Berry sitting on the toilet. It looked like he’d found Eleanor’s letter opener.

Lorna Barrett, Not the Killing Type

It’s November in Stoneham, New Hampshire, and time for the Chamber of Commerce elections. The long-standing Chamber president is being challenged by a former lover—Tricia’s own sister, Angelica. Also throwing his hat in the ring is small business owner Stan Berry. Unfortunately, Stan isn’t in the race for long.

When Stan is found murdered, his political rivals become suspects. Angelica is going to need more than a vote of confidence from her sister—she needs Tricia to clear her name so she can win the election.

Tricia soon uncovers a ballot box full of lies and betrayals, and a chamber full of people who had grudges against the victim. But were they serious enough to lead to murder? It’s up to Tricia to pull the lever on a killer before it’s curtains for someone else.
