The Bell Jar – A Dark and Engaging Exploration of Depression
photo by Alan LightI wrote a tribute to Jessica Fletcher to mark the passing of award-winning actress Angela Lansbury last week. The world will miss her!
Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme. Read the rules and more teasers at The Purple Booker. Anyone can play along.
This book has been on my reading list for a long time, and I finally got around to reading The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath. It is a difficult-to-read fictionalized autobiographical account of mental illness, depression, and attempted suicide. The author/main character was hospitalized for therapy, including shock therapy, after a serious suicide attempt. Sylvia Plath tells it like it is and was heralded for her fresh, unflinching look at depression in our modern society, especially in women. While the story ends with Esther Greenwood back on the road to mental health, it does foresee that one day depression will descend again, a prediction that indeed came to pass for Ms. Plath. The author was, in the end, unable to overcome the darkness, and I hope she found some peace in the world to come.
I was supposed to be having the time of my life
Sylvia Path, The Bell Jar
The Bell Jar chronicles the crack-up of Esther Greenwood: brilliant, beautiful, enormously talented, and successful, but slowly going under—maybe for the last time. Sylvia Plath masterfully draws the reader into Esther’s breakdown with such intensity that Esther’s neurosis becomes completely real and even rational, as probable and accessible an experience as going to the movies. Such deep penetration into the dark and harrowing corners of the psyche is an extraordinary accomplishment and has made The Bell Jar an enduring classic.

Good-Bye Angela Lansbury: A Tribute to the Beloved Character Jessica Fletcher
photo by Alan LightI was saddened to hear that award-winning actress Angela Lansbury had died October 11 at the age of 96. Lansbury’s amazing career spanned more than eight decades and included dozens of movie and TV roles. She received six Tony Awards (including a Lifetime Achievement Award), six Golden Globe Awards, a Laurence Olivier Award, and the Academy Honorary Award. She was nominated for three Academy Awards, eighteen Primetime Emmy Awards, and a Grammy Award. She was perhaps best known for playing amateur sleuth Jessica Fletcher in the long-running mystery series Murder, She Wrote.
Jessica FletcherMurder, She Wrote aired from 1984-1996. Throughout its twelve-season run, viewers watched as mystery writer and retired English teacher Jessica solved cases in Cabot Cove and beyond.
Fans of the show loved to see this middle-aged everywoman dig down into the clues, fight injustice, and solve the mysteries that the police could not. Reminiscent of Agatha Christie’s Miss Marple, Jessica had keen observation skills and an understanding of human nature. Her ability to match wits with villains who were more than willing to kill her was extraordinary. In a time when many female characters were damsels in distress or sex objects, it was refreshing to see a woman on TV pursue justice and truth.
You may not know that you can also read Jessica Fletcher in her own Murder She Wrote series (56 books!)
As Lansbury said:
Mystery is something that appeals to most everybody.
Angela Lansbury
FarewellGoodbye, Jessica, we will miss you.
Goodbye Mrs. Potts and Auntie Mame.
Goodbye Angela.

The grand opening is marred by just one thing, the death of her business rival, Angela Plaint. It appears that Angela was poisoned by one of Erin’s cupcakes, making her a prime suspect.
Equipped with cupcakes, her desire for the truth, and new bakery assistant Vicky’s help, Erin goes head-to-head against Detective Terry Piper to solve the murder. Rumors of treasure hunting, drug dealing, and a missing boy swirl around Bald Eagle Falls as Erin tries to sort the clues from the red herrings and find the killer before the killer can take care of her.
P.D. Workman has done it again! This introduction to a new series involves a fresh start, sympathetic characters, and a murder. I spent the last ten minutes of the book standing up to read because I was off to do something but just couldn’t put it down until I got to the end. I haven’t been that invested in a book in a while.

Couldn’t put it down !! From a cute kitten to a police dog to a bakery for people with allergies ! Highly recommend!

Southern Book Club Takes Readers on a Dark Ride
Their Walls Were Empty, book #12 in the Zachary Goldman Mysteries, launched over the weekend! Whether you have read the rest of the Zachary Goldman books or not, if you love a quirky not-so-perfect private eye who puts in the hard work to solve a case, you will love this book.
What readers are saying: “…longtime followers, as well as newcomers to the series, will be enthralled and entertained as the story unfolds.” “I love this series and this book is a great addition. Such great characters with an extremely interesting storyline.”
Check out my blog post for some great deals in the series while they are still available!
Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme. Read the rules and more teasers at The Purple Booker. Anyone can play along.
The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires by Grady Hendrix is billed as “Steel Magnolias meets Dracula.” Sort of a horror book for those who might not usually read horror. While packaged like literary or women’s fiction, don’t be fooled. The Southern Book Club will pull you in, and you might not like where it takes you. It starts off light and funny but doesn’t stay that way. It does get both dark and graphic. I would not recommend it to anyone who does not like horror. This is not your personable, sparkling vampire. This vampire wants your (and your children’s) blood and is using his charm to lure you into dark corners.
Joining the Literary Guild of Mt. Pleasant had seemed like a good idea at the time.
Grady Hendrix, The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires
Patricia Campbell’s life has never felt smaller. Her husband is a workaholic, her teenage kids have their own lives, her senile mother-in-law needs constant care, and she’s always a step behind on her endless to-do list. The only thing keeping her sane is her book club, a close-knit group of Charleston women united by their love of true crime. At these meetings they’re as likely to talk about the Manson family as they are about their own families.
One evening after book club, Patricia is viciously attacked by an elderly neighbor, bringing the neighbor’s handsome nephew, James Harris, into her life. James is well traveled and well read, and he makes Patricia feel things she hasn’t felt in years. But when children on the other side of town go missing, their deaths written off by local police, Patricia has reason to believe James Harris is more of a Bundy than a Brad Pitt. The real problem? James is a monster of a different kind—and Patricia has already invited him in.
Little by little, James will insinuate himself into Patricia’s life and try to take everything she took for granted—including the book club—but she won’t surrender without a fight in this blood-soaked tale of neighborly kindness gone wrong.

“Every single one of [P.D. Workman’s] books has spoken to me … And I have found strength in the books I’ve read.”
“This is one author I certainly will be looking out for, I can’t recommend her enough.”
“I’ll read anything by P. D. Workman that I can get my hands on.”
“Every book by PD Workman that I’ve read has been a gripping one, however different the genres are, going from lighter mysteries to really dark ones… this is one of my favourite, most dependable authors.”
“P.D. Workman is an incredibly versatile writer. No matter which of her books I read I am drawn into a great story and honestly, I don’t think I’ve followed another author that could go from cozy mystery to YA to a PI series dealing with mental health issues. Really enjoy her books!”
“[P.D. Workman’s] stories are so believable and you can’t help but feel like you know these people. You find yourself crying, laughing and feeling the characters emotions. Now if an author can make you cry and feel every emotion in a story, she is one hell of an author.”
“P. D. Workman, does not shy from probing the deep psychological scars of childhood trauma, mental illness, and addiction. Also characteristic of this author, these extremely sensitive issues are explored with extensive empathy, described with incredible clarity, and portrayed with profound insight.”
“Once again P.D.Workman has created an intense psychological mystery that impacts a wallop of thought induction. The writing is so well developed and draws you into the characters story.”

New Release! Their Walls Were Empty

Eager to start the next Zachary Goldman Mystery? Zachary is on the trail of a couple of burglars in this one. Or is he?
Their Walls Were Empty is #12 in this private investigator series, but can be read as a stand alone.
@media screen and (min-width:768px){.stk-8fd7e47{flex:1 1 calc(66.7% - var(--stk-column-gap,0px) * 1 / 2 ) !important}}Their Walls Were EmptyT. Olson says: As usual, this is a very well written and interesting story, easy to read and with excellent characters. This time there’s a mystery within a mystery, and a nice little twist at the end.
A simple robbery
Back in the saddle, Private Investigator Zachary Goldman is hired by Kenzie’s father to investigate the heist of valuable memorabilia from his favorite sports bar.
Kenzie did say that it was a bad idea.
Maybe Zachary should have listened.
Because nothing is as it appears. As Zachary digs deeper, it becomes apparent that there is far more at stake here than just some sports memorabilia.
Just what has Walter put him in the middle of?

…longtime followers as well as newcomers to the series will be enthralled and entertained as story unfolds.
I love this series and this book is a great addition. Such great characters with an extremely interesting storyline.

Zachary Goldman, Private Investigator, is flawed with a capital F. Shattered by the tragedies of his own life, he will somehow still manage to pick himself up and dig just a little bit deeper than anyone else to find the vital clues.
Maybe being broken makes it easier for others who have faced tragedy to trust him. Walk with Zachary as he solves cases that will stretch his abilities to the limit.
Even with his own life in shambles, Zachary Goldman is still the one you want on the case.

A Journey into Botswana in The Kalahari Typing School for Men
Don’t miss my post last week for Autism Awareness Month. I have a number of articles you may be interested in and a 50% coupon for some of my books.
Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme. Read the rules and more teasers at The Purple Booker. Anyone can play along.
I’m not sure how many of the books I have read in the No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series by Alexander McCall Smith. Maybe just one other one. The Kalahari Typing School for Men is number four in the series. It can, of course, be read as a stand alone. The mysteries dealt by the ladies are not suspenseful and thrilling, but instead take you on a journey into the culture and streets of Botswana. It is a slower pace, with lots of domestic details and carefully drawn characters. It is easy to find yourself pulled into these books even if you are used to the faster-paced mystery thrillers.
Those who brought their cars in for repair sometimes realised that there was a matter which might benefit from investigation-an errant husband, for example, or a missing relative while others who a came with a matter for the agency would arrange at the same time for their cars to be serviced or their brakes to be checked.
Alexander McCall Smith, The Kalahari Typing School for Men
A beguiling mystery and lyrical novel of Africa — the fourth in a series that the L.A. Times calls “thoroughly engaging and entertaining.”
Now that The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency (the only detective agency for ladies and others in Botswana) is established, its founder, Precious Ramotswe, can look upon her life with pride: she’s reached her late thirties (“the finest age to be”), has a house, two children, a good fiancé — Mr. J. L. B. Matekoni — and many satisfied customers. But life is never without its problems. It turns out that her adopted son is responsible for the dead hoopoe bird in the garden; her assistant, Mma Makutsi, wants a husband and needs help with her idea to open the Kalahari Typing School for Men; yet Mma Ramotswe’s sexist rival has no trouble opening his Satisfaction Guaranteed Detective Agency across town. Will Precious Ramotswe’s delightfully cunning and profoundly moral methods save the day? Follow the continuing story of Botswana’s first lady detective in the irresistible The Kalahari Typing School for Men.

A round-up of autism posts

In Canada, October is Autism Awareness Month, so I thought I would include a post showcasing some of the autism posts I already have written on my site. It’s easy to lose track of them after a while! Hopefully, you will find something here that is helpful or speaks to you. There are lots of great resources out there.

Hired to investigate the death of an autistic boy in a treatment facility, PI Zachary Goldman is concerned about the therapies he sees there. While he is assured that the children there are not actually being hurt, his investigation leads to the discovery of even deeper institutional abuses.
Battling the ghosts of his own past, Zachary fights to uncover the facility’s dark secrets and to get as many children as he can out of harm’s way.

The way that PD Workman showed the autistic perspective in contrast to the mainstream views about us was lovely. I appreciated it more than I can express in words. She did thorough research on multiple sides of the issue and it shows. She gives multiple autistic perspectives, not just one, and the way they were presented brought me to tears multiple times … The story itself was a solid mystery with many exciting twists and turns along the way. Even if I wasn’t personally invested in the topic (being autistic myself and having autistic children), I still would’ve enjoyed it as a mystery. I’m extremely likely to pick up more of her books now that I’ve read this one!

Bad turns to worse when he is then apprehended from his family by DFS.
His mother could never have predicted the chain of events in a million years.
In trying to protect him, DFS has actually put Caleb in harm’s way.

“P. D. Workman has outdone herself with this riveting techno-thriller featuring Micah Miller, a forensic artist specializing in composite renderings based on forensic DNA phenotyping … This book offers plenty of thrills, chills, suspense and white-knuckled tension as the plot unfolds and it kept me turning pages until late into the night. The story is clean and well-written, the plot is fascinating, the pace is relentless and the characters are realistic and relatable. I highly recommend this absorbing and thoroughly enjoyable thriller to anyone who favors CSI, NCIS, Cold Case, Forensic Files or any high-tech inspired crime-solving theme.”

I am nearly finished The Other People by C.J. Tudor, and it has been an interesting journey! A well-built psychological mystery, with a bit of the supernatural thrown in, you’re never quite sure what is real and how much can be explained logically. And how much is just inexplicable. The characters are well-developed and will certainly pull you into the story. You won’t want to put it down until all of your questions have been answered. But I can’t guarantee that they all will be!
“You need to come home, Mr. Forman. Right away.”
C.J. Tudor, The Other People
Three years ago, Gabe’s family disappeared. Most people think they died. Some of them blame Gabe. Hardly anyone believes the truth–that Gabe saw his daughter the day she and his wife disappeared, smiling at him from the back of a rusty old car speeding down the highway. So even though it’s been three years since that day, Gabe cannot give up hope. Even though he has given up everything else. His home, his job, his old life. He spends his days travelling up and down the highway and sleeping in service stations, searching for the car that took her.
It’s hard for most people to understand. But Gabe has found some who do in an online group set up by people who have also lost loved ones–who have suffered like him. They call themselves “The Other People.” Because isn’t that what everyone thinks: bad stuff only happens to “other people.”
When the car that Gabe saw driving away that night is found in a lake with a body inside, Gabe is suddenly under suspicion–and in danger. In desperation, he turns to The Other People for help. Because they are good people. They know what loss is like. They know what pain is like. They know what death is like. There’s just one problem . . . they want other people to know it too.

A Halloween spooktacular cozy mystery boxed set! Fall is in the air and so is murder.
A baker who sees the dead. One too many suitors. And a killer. Living in Honey Hollow can be murder.
My name is Lottie Lemon, and I see dead people. Okay, so I rarely see dead people, mostly I see furry creatures of the dearly departed variety who have come back from the other side to warn me of their previous owner’s impending doom.
Lottie Lemon has a brand new bakery to tend to, a budding romance with perhaps one too many suitors, and she has the supernatural ability to see the dead—which are always harbingers for ominous things to come. Throw in the occasional ghost of the human variety, a string of murders, and her insatiable thirst for justice, and you’ll have more chaos than you know what to do with.
