Something New: I Owe You One

I don’t usually read romance, so this one is a bit of a divergence from my usual. I Owe You One by Sophie Kinsella is a rom com with a unique plot-line, focused as much on Fixie’s relationships with her brother and hilariously vague sister and managing the family store as on romance. Being a rom com there are, of course, two men in her life, one that’s right for her and one that’s not. The storyline is interesting and fresh and the characters not the run-of-the-mill.

I lift my spare hand to protect myself from a deluge of little rubber balls. They’re bouncing on my head, my shoulders, all over the shop. How come we have so many of the bloody things, anyway?

  I found this book to be relevant, well-written, and thoroughly absorbing, if not a bit unsettling. P. D. Workman never fails to engage, enlighten, and entertain with her spellbinding stories and this book is no exception.

 Highly recommended! I’m decades past being a “young adult” and find the books in this series to be riveting. They are expertly crafted, with well developed characters and intriguing plots. I enjoyed this book and am looking forward to the next in the series.

I am reading Crashed by Timothy Hallinan this week. Junior Bender is a burglar, not a private investigator, so maybe I can’t properly classify it as hard-boiled or noir. But the atmosphere, language, and descriptions are as colourful as any Sam Spade. The characters are fun and described well. This twisty little mystery is a great read so far, I will definitely read more of the series.

And then, just to make the moment more special, another dog, big enough to take the other three like aspirin, shouldered its way into the hall with a growl so low it rattled the crystals in the chandelier.

Timothy Hallinan, Crashed

Junior Bender, a burglar with a magic touch, is being blackmailed into taking on a new freelance job. One of LA’s biggest crime bosses is producing a porn movie that someone keeps sabotaging; Junior’s job is to figure out who’s responsible and keep the movie on track.
