Anxious Going Back to School?

I have been out of school for long enough that I no longer have school nightmares every August/September anymore. But it took a number of years being away before those dreams faded!

There can be a lot of excitement over moving into higher grades or a new school, seeing friends you have been separated from over the summer and finding out what they did, and getting new clothes or school supplies (I love my notebooks and pens!) But also a lot of anxiety over new teachers, difficult subjects, locker combinations, finding your way around a new school, remembering a locker combination, and many other challenges. These days, there may be additional anxiety over being around other people with the threat of COVID.

Children may experience nightmares, behavioural problems, bed wetting, have headaches or stomachaches, or other symptoms.

So what can you do to help your kids (or yourself) feel better going back to the classroom?

Encourage them to talk about it. Let them know they aren’t the only one feeling anxious and afraid. Sometimes it is easier to talk in the car or on a walk. Try to be calm and relaxed yourself. Kids can sense when you are stressed and reflect your feelings.Help to dispel anxiety over the unknown. Talk about the new routines, bus or walking routes, where their classroom is, and whatever else you can find ahead of time. Rehearse when possible. Role play challenging situations. Talking to friends and new teachers, dealing with bullying, asking for help.Try some relaxation exercises — visualization, deep breathing or box breathing, progressive muscle relaxation.Encourage exercise, including vigorous activity, good sleep habits, and a healthy diet. Seek professional help when necessary. If symptoms persist and are affecting their quality of life, seek a qualified professional for counseling and possibly medication.

How about escaping to some great books?

She was a broken bird
He was a mender of wings

Parker’s mother always said he jumped into things without thinking first, and that’s exactly what he did when he saw Dakota, cold and hungry, fending for herself on the city streets. How could he ignore the pain and fear in her dark eyes? Dakota was eager to go to school and she made friends quickly, eager to make up for a dismal childhood full of deprivation and abuse by enjoying every moment she could.

But there was something wrong with Dakota. It wasn’t just the hollowness in her eyes or her traumatic past. Others sensed it too and warned Parker not to get too close to Dakota. But despite his questions, he just can’t help falling for her.

Dakota holds her secrets close, and Parker is worried that if he pushes too hard for answers, she’ll just run away.

In a genre dominated by kick-ass heroines in post-apocalyptic dystopian worlds, wizards and magical realism, Ms. Workman is carving out her own niche. Her books show us real kids facing scary real-life problems in the modern world. Her work is both an invitation to empathy and a cautionary tale.

Is Justine crazy?

Everyone thinks so…

Her mother. The kids at school, and the teachers and administrators too. Even the police who pick her up from her night rambles. Maybe them most of all.

Justine’s therapist says she is ‘troubled’, but it means the same thing. He thinks that her vivid, reoccurring nightmares and atrocious behavior point to some trauma in her past; but Em, Justine’s mother, can’t explain it.

Justine used to have Christian, her best friend and skateboard partner. He was the only one who accepted her. Maybe because skating is the only time that Justine is really free to be herself. Now that Christian is gone… Justine keeps thinking things can’t get any worse.

Even as she sees her life spinning further and further out of control, Justine can’t give up her sense of who she is—someone far different than the loving daughter Em expects her to be—to just fit in and be happy. She is sure that Em secretly holds the key to who Justine really is. But if she does, Em isn’t talking.

The portrayal of Justine felt very true to me. I had a troubled childhood and youth myself and I really identified with Justine’s feelings, words, and actions. Some of the things Justine said and did were things I said and did when I was her age. The characters felt very three-dimensional and real. The story pulled me in and I just had to know how it ended! I swayed back and forth in my opinions about all the characters and was very satisfied with how everything played out in the end.

The lion rages within him.

Leo grew up between a rock and a hard place. His experiences as a child made him tough. As the oldest of the children, the drive to be the protector of the innocent and helpless permeates every part of his life. But so does the anger that no amount of boxing can ever exorcise.

As he waits for the monster who is his father to die, a chance encounter brings Elizabeth and her baby into  his protective circle. But is Elizabeth as lost and innocent she seems to be? Or has her own experiences turned her into something else?

As he learns more, Leo wonders whether he can help Elizabeth or if he is messing around with something beyond his ability to manage.

I really liked this book. It made me cry a lot, I felt sorry for the male protagonist in this book for all the trouble that his parents put him through. I can also understand that he had a hard time as an adult with trying to trust people when you go through what this young man and his siblings went through it just amazes me that they could even function in life and not let it get them down. I will read more by this author in future.

Taylor is a teen teetering on the edge of a steep precipice. Disowned by his family, living on the street, battling abuse and prejudice, he struggles to discover who he really is and how to carry on with life.

The last person you would expect to touch him is Roz, whose foremost identity is a Christian wife and mother. But her world is about to be shaken. Through all that happens, Roz understands she has to be there for Taylor, knowing he is only one step from despair and self-destruction.

Absolutely loved this book, I sure hope there’s a sequel. Taylor’s life is so interesting I need to know more…

Reading Taylor’s journey from parental abuse, to the group home, to peer abuse is heartbreaking, inspiring and such a great read giving opinion and fact from the religious to the scientific spectrum. A great read and so well written.

“[P.D. Workman’s] stories are so believable and you can’t help but feel like you know these people. You find yourself crying, laughing and feeling the characters emotions. Now if an author can make you cry and feel every emotion in a story, she is one hell of an author.”

Follow this Cat Under Fire

Looking for some exciting reads about prison breaks? Check out my blog from last week for some fresh book ideas to add to your to be read pile.

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme. Read the rules and more teasers at The Purple Booker. Anyone can play along.

This week’s read is Cat Under Fire, the second book in Shirley Rousseau Murphy’s Joe Grey Mystery series. I’ve read a couple of other books in the series. They’re a lot of fun. Murphy’s cats do break a few physiological rules as well as being anthropomorphic speaking and thinking cats. They see in colour. They sweat. And, of course, they solve murders. Most of the humans are not too stupid, but they don’t seem to have the same drive to track down the killers as Joe and Dulcie.

And Dulcie was possessed not only with the murder itself, but with trying to discover, as well, what made humans kill so wantonly.

Shirley Rousseau Murphy, Cat Under Fire

A big, powerful, gray feline, Joe Grey is perfectly content with his remarkable ability to understand and communicate with humans — especially now that he has company. A mysterious accident similar to the one that enabled him to speak and read has transformed his friend Dulcie as well. The trouble is, the cute tabby female not only hears human words, she believes them.

Now she’s convinced the man who was jailed for murdering a famous local artist and burning down her studio is innocent — simply because he says so — and she’s willing to do whatever it takes to dig up the evidence that will exonerate the accused. Joe would much prefer just lazing around the house doing kitty things, but the lady cat is determined. And Joe must admit that he is curious … though everyone knows what that can lead to!

Books Featuring Prison Breaks

I’ve done all kinds of themed posts and book lists here before, but one that I haven’t done is prison breaks!

This topic was prompted by my latest release, On the Slab Pie, which revolves around a prison break.

As I was brainstorming for this book, I started to wonder how many people Erin Price had ended up putting in prison in the first seventeen books of the series. And… it’s a fairly significant number. There are a couple of books where no one ended up going to prison for one reason or another, and other books where two or more people end up there. So I decided it was time for a reunion with a few of these villains!

@media screen and (min-width:768px){.stk-8fd7e47{flex:1 1 calc(66.7% - var(--stk-column-gap,0px) * 1 / 2 ) !important}}On the Slab Pie

The pie crust is tender, but the case is tough!

It all starts with a body.

Erin thought she’d seen and heard it all. In Bald Eagle Falls, everyone seemed not only to know everyone else’s business, but to discuss it at length. Yet she had always assumed that her neighbor Mrs. Peach, who had no man in her life, was widowed.

Mr. Peach’s unexpected reappearance, a prison breaking, and a body in the woods combine to form the toughest case yet for the gluten-free baker to solve!

⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ I enjoyed this book immensely! There were so many twists and turns that I was unable to figure out who committed the crimes. If Erin hadn’t helped Mr. Peach home, the culprit would have gotten away with the crimes. Can you figure out this mystery?

Like baking mysteries? Cats, dogs, and other pets? Award-winning and USA Today Bestselling Author P.D. Workman brings readers back to small town Bald Eagle Falls for another culinary cozy mystery to be solved by gluten-free baker Erin Price and her friends.

Have your gluten-free cake and eat it too. Sink your teeth into this sweet treat now!

And More Prison Breaks!

I was hoping that my fellow cozy authors might be able to provide me with a few cozy mysteries featuring prison breaks, but I guess it is not quite as popular a subject in cozies as, say, a snowbound mystery or cruise ship. So some of these prison breaks will be a little bit grittier than On the Slab Pie.

Come to find out there was a prison break and the serial killer is believed to be in Normal and someone has stolen a motorhome from Happy Trails Campground. Are these connected?

Mae lets boyfriend and hunky detective, Hank Sharp, follow all the leads about the murders and on the trail of the serial killer because she’s got bigger s’mores in the fire. The motorhome owners have filed a lawsuit and suing her for the deed to Happy Trails Campground.

Grab your log book and Set Sail for Murder

Hope you had a chance to pick up your copy of On the Slab Pie, book #18 in the Auntie Clem’s Bakery series this weekend! More great deals can be found on my blog post.

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme. Read the rules and more teasers at The Purple Booker. Anyone can play along.

Set Sail for Murder is a classic murder mystery. We have the unhappy family full of suspects stuck on a cruise ship, tempers flaring, feelings hurt, and millions of dollars on the line. Sound familiar? The characters are interesting and the scenery compelling. There has not yet been a murder, but there have been three attempts. I assume one of the heirs will eventually succeed!

Sophia might as well be treading water surrounded by barracudas. She’s all that stands between her stepchildren and the kind of money you and I can’t even imagine.

Carolyn Hart, Set Sail for Murder

When retired newspaper reporter Henrietta O’Dwyer Collins, Henrie O to her friends, receives a call for help, she discovers that love once kindled never burns to ashes. Although she refused Jimmy Lennox’s marriage proposal, there is still a special place for him in her heart. She wished him well when he found happiness with Sophia Montgomery, world-famous documentary filmmaker and stepmother to the now grown heirs of a great fortune. Sophia is at odds with the heirs, and Jimmy fears for her safety. He asks Henrie O to come along with the family on a Baltic cruise. Henrie O can’t turn down her old friend, though old passions are stirred when he calls.

On the voyage she soon realizes this dysfunctional family is plunging toward destruction and one of the travelers has murder in mind. As the ports of call pass—Copenhagen, Gdynia, Tallinn, St. Petersburg—death inexorably approaches. Henrie O works desperately to save Jimmy and to bring hope to lives blighted by anger, resentment, and heartbreak.

Change is hard in a small Southern town, especially when it brings a side of murder.

All Harvey Beckett wants to do is help the residents of St. Marin’s find the perfect book for that moment, snuggle with her hound dog Mayhem, and be ignored by her cat Aslan. But when the small, waterside town’s newest resident discovers the body of the community’s persnickety reporter in her bookshop storeroom just before her grand opening, Harvey can’t help trying to solve the crime, even when it might cost her business and her life. The more questions Harvey asks, the more secrets she uncovers.

Will Harvey and her friends be able to solve the murder of the town reporter without her becoming a victim herself?

This book addresses racism in both the plot and the writing style.

Called in to dog-sit the Labrador service dog, Buddy, she’s outraged that his veteran owner is being presumed guilty until proven innocent. With Buddy’s help, she tries to uncover the real killer. When a dead muso is found in the flat upstairs, Tabitha does her best (honestly) not to interfere with the investigation, despite the cute Scottish blogger who keeps angling for her help. Her superpower is gossip, not solving murder mysteries, and those are totally not the same thing, right?

But as that strange death turns into a string of random crimes across the city of Hobart, Tabitha can’t shake the unsettling feeling that maybe, for once, it really is all about her

And maybe she’s figured out the deadly truth a trifle late…

A Great Read – Darius the Great is Not Okay

It’s that time of year—Christmas in July! Be sure to check out my blog post and Beat the Heat with Christmas in July.

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme. Read the rules and more teasers at The Purple Booker. Anyone can play along.

I just finished reading Darius the Great is Not Okay, by Adib Khorram. A great showcase of Persian culture, family relationships, and depression, this YA book would definitely be on my recommended reads. The descriptions of the buildings and historic sites in Iran, Persian cuisine, and tea are rich and fascinating. As a teen living in a dual-culture home suffering from mental illness, the relationships are often fraught as Darius tries to find his way in the world.

I see from Amazon that there is a sequel as well, Darius the Great Deserves Better. I’m sure I will go on to read it at some point. Khorram’s writing is engaging and the characters are deep and sympathetic.

Dad always said that. Not “Hi, Darius,” but “Is everything okay?”

Darius the Great is Not Okay, Adib Khorram
Dad always said that. Not Hi, Darius, but Is everything okay?

Darius Kellner speaks better Klingon than Farsi, and he knows more about Hobbit social cues than Persian ones. He’s a Fractional Persian—half, his mom’s side—and his first-ever trip to Iran is about to change his life.

Darius has never really fit in at home, and he’s sure things are going to be the same in Iran. His clinical depression doesn’t exactly help matters, and trying to explain his medication to his grandparents only makes things harder. Then Darius meets Sohrab, the boy next door, and everything changes. Soon, they’re spending their days together, playing soccer, eating faludeh, and talking for hours on a secret rooftop overlooking the city’s skyline. Sohrab calls him Darioush—the original Persian version of his name—and Darius has never felt more like himself than he does now that he’s Darioush to Sohrab.

“P.D. Workman is an incredibly versatile writer. No matter which of her books I read I am drawn into a great story and honestly, I don’t think I’ve followed another author that could go from cozy mystery to YA to a PI series dealing with mental health issues. Really enjoy her books!”

“[P.D. Workman’s] stories are so believable and you can’t help but feel like you know these people. You find yourself crying, laughing and feeling the characters emotions. Now if an author can make you cry and feel every emotion in a story, she is one hell of an author.”

You’ve begged for recipes from Auntie Clem’s Bakery, so I have finally pulled together a handful of my basic recipes for you.

Now, Erin can make a lot of awesome baking that I cannot, both because she can use ingredients that I can’t eat (I am one of those people with multiple intolerances and allergies) and because she has time to experiment and bake when I am spending my time writing new books for you! I have collected thousands of recipes and not even tried 10% of them. I don’t generally bake loaves of bread; I keep tortillas and pancakes in my freezer and on special occasions make sandwich rolls. I don’t want to give you recipes that I haven’t tested myself, so that limits the number of recipes I can share.

The good news is, during the Christmas holiday, I pulled together a few of my tried, tested, and true recipes and made them available to you for a free download. These are recipes that I spent years adapting and creating. I will continue to add recipes to it in the future.

I will plan to add to this recipe collection in coming months/years as I have more time to bake and write down the ingredients. For now, I am starting small! (Very small!)

I hope you find these recipes useful.

This Christmas the holiday spirit is under threat and only a special stray can save it!

The name’s Ginger, AKA Agent Meow 01. Usually, I spend my free time searching for scraps and getting chased by dogs, like the stray cat that I am.

But this Christmas, everything changes.

When the dog agents from PAWs mess up and leave the human world hanging by a thread, it’s Ginger to the rescue. With my combination of brains, stealth, and daring, I’m the agent they call when the fur starts to fly. Except this time, I’ve got a new partner.

A house cat.

With the clock ticking, this mission seems doomed to failure with so many pheromones about.

Will the Christmas spirit be saved, or will we turn our tails and let the world burn?

A Christmas extravaganza in Mayfair, Florida, complete with an ice skating rink. What could go wrong?

When Mayfair’s newly-minted Chamber of Commerce goes off the rails and decides to build an ice skating rink, a decades-old skeleton is uncovered. The secrets it reveals threaten more than the town’s Christmas plans. Feeling responsible since the let’s-attract-more-tourists idea was hers initially, service dog trainer Marcia Banks is determined to help her police detective boyfriend solve the mystery—whether he wants her help or not. Maybe she can wheedle more out of the townspeople than he can.

Will she and her Black Lab, Buddy, keep the ghost of Christmas past from destroying what is left of Mayfair’s founding family, or will her meddling make things worse?

Feast on A Banquet of Consequences

This weekend was the launch of On the Slab Pie, book #18 in the Auntie Clem’s Bakery series! Be sure to pick up your copy. There are also some other new releases you should take a look at. You won’t want to get caught without enough beach reads this week!

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme. Read the rules and more teasers at The Purple Booker. Anyone can play along.

A Banquet of Consequences is book #19 in Elizabeth George’s Inspector Lynley series. I have read a few other books in this series and they are always full of interesting characters with complex backstories, and a good murder you can really dig into. Though they are police procedurals, there is a lot of information given about the characters before the murder, similar to an Agatha Christie like Death on the Nile. You don’t really hear a lot from the police detectives to start with. In a lot of police procedurals you only view the crime through the eyes of the investigator, but that is not the way the Inspector Lynley books are written.

I am still missing a point or two of the family’s backstory that I think will throw light on the murder. The reader has been pointed from the start toward one particular suspect, but I expect this is a misdirection and I will soon experience a reversal, showing that it was not her, but someone else in her sphere.

* Language warning for those who don’t want to read f-bombs. Mostly in the first couple of chapters by a character with Coprolalia

His mobile toppled to one side, and he handed it over. It was destroyed.
“Did you drive over it or something?” Lily asked him.
“I smashed it with a shovel.”

Elizabeth George, A Banquet of Consequences

The unspoken secrets and buried lies of one family rise to the surface in Elizabeth George’s newest novel of crime, passion, and tragic history. As Inspector Thomas Lynley investigates the London angle of an ever more darkly disturbing case, his partner, Barbara Havers, is looking behind the peaceful façade of country life to discover a twisted world of desire and deceit.

The suicide of William Goldacre is devastating to those left behind who will have to deal with its unintended consequences—could there be a link between the young man’s leap from a Dorset cliff and a horrific poisoning in Cambridge?

After various issues with her department, Barbara Havers is desperate to redeem herself. So when a past encounter gives her a connection to the unsolved Cambridge murder, Barbara begs Thomas Lynley to let her pursue the crime, knowing one mistake could mean the end of her career.

Full of shocks, intensity, and suspense from the first page to the last, A Banquet of Consequences reveals both Lynley and Havers under mounting pressure to solve a case both complicated and deeply disturbing.

On the Slab Pie and other new releases

The time has come! Release day for On the Slab Pie, book #18 in the Auntie Clem’s Bakery series. Are you ready for a super twisty mystery? This one should satisfy your craving for a sweet treat! Erin and Vic are working for a slab pie for Statehood Day, but there are a few distractions…

@media screen and (min-width:768px){.stk-8fd7e47{flex:1 1 calc(66.7% - var(--stk-column-gap,0px) * 1 / 2 ) !important}}On the Slab Pie

Erin Price moves to Bald Eagle Falls, a place where everyone knows everyone as well as everyone else’s business, taking over the store left to her by her aunt to start up a gluten-free bakery. The grand opening is marred by just one thing, the death of her business rival, Angela Plaint. It appears that Angela was poisoned by one of Erin’s cupcakes, making her a prime suspect.

Equipped with cupcakes, her desire for the truth, and new bakery assistant Vicky’s help, Erin goes head-to-head against Detective Terry Piper to solve the murder. Rumors of treasure hunting, drug dealing, and a missing boy swirl around Bald Eagle Falls as Erin tries to sort the clues from the red herrings and find the killer before the killer can take care of her.

⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ P.D. Workman has done it again! This introduction to a new series involves a fresh start, sympathetic characters, and a murder. I spent the last ten minutes of the book standing up to read because I was off to do something but just couldn’t put it down until I got to the end. I haven’t been that invested in a book in a while.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Couldn’t put it down !! From a cute kitten to a police dog to a bakery for people with allergies ! Highly recommend!

For Blair, something stinks of Regina, her disowned half sister who already tried once to destroy the art gallery. Rather than trust her new friends to solve what may not actually be a ghostly mystery after all, she hires a detective to follow Regina around.

Will this blissfully sweet shop become the horn in Blair’s side that finally shuts the art gallery down permanently or will otherworldly intervention save the day?
