Workman on the New Parks Pat MysteriesWriting the Series

Q: How has Margie “Parks Pat” Patenaude grown since the first book?
A: In the beginning, Margie was brand new to Calgary—though she had been there as a child. She was just starting out as a homicide detective, still finding her footing, and her daughter Christina had no friends in Calgary. The only real comfort for Margie then was living within walking distance of her Moushoom. Now, many books later, Margie is an established and confident detective with strong friendships in the department, and Christina has her own circle of friends at school. Watching both of them grow and put down roots has been rewarding.

Grounded in the Wind (Book 13)

Q: This book dives deep into drones, cybercrime, and national security. How did you prepare for that?
A: I did a lot of research for Grounded in the Wind. I had to learn about drones, cybercrime, airports, and the different law enforcement and investigative bodies in Canada. I even consulted with some of these organizations to make sure I portrayed the drone incident realistically and that I got the technical aspects—like hacking—right.

Q: What made Prairie Winds Park the right setting?
A: Prairie Winds Park is unique because it’s a popular planespotting location and also protected airspace—you can’t even fly a kite there. That detail added authenticity and tension to the story.

Reservoir of Secrets (Book 14)

Q: How does this book differ in its mystery structure?
A: In some murder mysteries—like a locked-room case—it feels like no one could have done it. In others, everyone seems to have a motive. Reservoir of Secrets is one of those where anyone could have done it, and everyone had a reason. That creates a different kind of tension: readers are constantly questioning every character.

Q: What themes were you most drawn to while writing it?
A: Family secrets, hidden trauma, and the way past grievances shape the present. Those are themes that I explore often in my work, and here they’re woven into every relationship in the book.

Peril in the Blooms (Book 15)

Q: Botany and poison play a big role in this story. Why did you choose that focus?
A: I’ve used botanical poisons in other stories, but this time I wanted to focus on plants that are native to Calgary gardens and also those historically used by Indigenous people. That gave the poison in this story multiple layers of meaning, with both practical and cultural dimensions.

Q: What do you think will surprise readers most?
A: I think the depth of history behind the poison, and how it ties into cultural and ethical questions, will be unexpected. This isn’t just a matter of “what killed the victim”—it’s about tradition, wisdom, and responsibility.

Behind the Writing

Q: Which of these three books was hardest to write?
A: Definitely Grounded in the Wind. The research required was immense, and I wanted to do justice to the technical aspects of drones and cybercrime. At the same time, I wanted to stay true to the grounded, character-driven storytelling that Parks Pat readers expect.

About the Series

Q: Do I need to read the Parks Pat Mysteries in order?
A: No. Each Parks Pat Mystery is written to stand alone, with its own complete case and resolution. But if you enjoy following Margie “Parks Pat” Patenaude’s growth as a detective and mother, you’ll love reading the series in order.

Q: Where should I start if I’m new to the Parks Pat Mysteries?
A: You can start with any book, including the new releases. Many readers begin with Out with the Sunset (Book 1), which is available free with the Parks Pat Survival Pack, or dive right into Grounded in the Wind, Reservoir of Secrets, or Peril in the Blooms.

Q: What makes the Parks Pat Mysteries different from other police procedurals?
A: These stories combine the authenticity of Canadian crime fiction with the unique perspective of Métis homicide detective Margie Patenaude. They are praised for emotional depth, realistic characters, and gripping suspense set against Calgary’s beautiful parks and natural landscapes.

Q: Are the Parks Pat Mysteries similar to Louise Penny’s books?
A: Yes. If you enjoy Louise Penny’s atmospheric Canadian mysteries or Linda Castillo’s gripping police procedurals featuring strong female detectives, you’ll find the same unputdownable blend of suspense, setting, and character in the Parks Pat series.

Q: How many Parks Pat Mysteries are there?
A: As of September 2025, there are 15 books in the series, beginning with Out with the Sunset. The newest releases — Grounded in the Wind, Reservoir of Secrets, and Peril in the Blooms — bring Margie’s journey into thrilling new territory.

Looking for a police procedural set in picturesque Canada? Let Award-winning and Bestselling Author P.D. Workman take you to her favourite Calgary parks, as Métis detective Margie Patenaude investigates a murder in this fast-paced new series.

Detective “Parks” Pat — Margie Patenaude — is a new Calgary homicide detective. Being Métis and a single mom, she has a few things on her plate. Working on a spate of murders in Calgary and area parks earns Margie her nickname.

These short mysteries are just right for those days when you could use a break from your busy life. Take a walk in a Calgary park with Parks Pat

10 Echoes of the Engine

Detective Margie “Parks Pat” Patenaude did not expect to be the first one on the scene at a gruesome accidental death when a walk with Stella took a sudden turn for the worse. The below-grade pedestrian crossing was supposed to prevent such things, but the homeless man encamped up the slope apparently had his own ideas.

11 Bench with a View

When a lifeless body is discovered on a park bench, Detective Margie “Parks Pat” Patenaude is thrust into a perplexing case that will test her investigative skills. The victim is posed as if she was simply resting, leaving Margie to question the motive behind this macabre display. As she delves deeper into the investigation, Margie uncovers a connection that hits closer to home than she ever imagined.

12 Beneath the Icy Depths

Detective Margie “Parks Pat” Patenaude couldn’t think of a much colder way to die. They assured her that the woman probably didn’t feel a thing. When a woman falls through the ice to the dark and murky depths, the shiver she feels is not the anticipation of a twisted mystery, but that is what she gets. There is no indication that Julia’s death was a homicide, except for one niggling thing…

Author Notes may contain spoilers!

I was working on a collaborative project with another author when we came up with an idea for murders that took place in provincial parks. After my involvement with the creation of the Glenbow Ranch Provincial Park, I was quite excited about the idea. That project ended up not going anywhere, but I had already scheduled the time to write it, so I decided to take a run at murders that took place in Calgary area parks on my own.

I had been thinking about setting something locally for a while. Most of my stories are set in the USA, which always means doing extra research into those little details like weather and climate, foliage, animal life, and sunrise and sunset times, as well as cultural aspects such as speech/colloquialisms, dress, demographics, jobs/industry, government, and more.

Setting a series in Calgary, I could take advantage of my knowledge and experience living here. I walked through the parks with my husband, scouting out various places where bodies could be found and features of the park that might come into play. I took pictures and immersed myself in the settings. We tried to be careful not to talk too loudly about body dumps or murder around other park visitors, and luckily didn’t have any actual Calgary police officers coming to our door asking what we were up to!

This was, by far, one of the most marvelous and suspenseful mysteries I have read in a long time. Memorable characters, plenty of twists and turns, a surprising ending. Is there going to be another book in this series? If so, I can't wait!

She Wore Mourning

A dead child.
A mother deep in mourning.

Private Investigator Zachary Goldman’s life isn’t all roses, but he tries to put his own shattered life behind him to investigate the death of five-year-old Declan Bond.

Declan’s death has been ruled an accident, but his grandmother thinks there is more to it. She fears Declan’s mother will not be able to find peace until Zachary can give them an answer once and for all. But as Zachary digs into the circumstances surrounding Declan’s death, he finds that all is not as it seems, and somebody doesn’t want him to find the truth.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Psychologically complex and gripping … Zachary must deal with his own psychological issues as well as those of the child’s parents along with attempts on his life. I’m binge reading this series.

Zachary Goldman, Private Investigator, is flawed with a capital F. Shattered by the tragedies of his own life, he will somehow still manage to pick himself up and dig just a little bit deeper than anyone else to find the vital clues.

Maybe being broken makes it easier for others who have faced tragedy to trust him. Walk with Zachary as he solves cases that will stretch his abilities to the limit.

Even with his own life in shambles, Zachary Goldman is still the one you want on the case.

Investigate this P.I. mystery now!

Praise for She Wore Mourning

— an amazing and suspenseful story. It carries you away into a psychological tailspin that keeps you going in so many different directions.

— A really good piece of detective fiction with some novel and original features which keep the reader guessing until the last few pages.

— I love the way the investigation plays out…very interesting.  That is done very well. It held my interest. I very much wanted to find out the outcome…

— Very well written. [Zachary] is flawed with a capital F … In spite of his problems, he is a very sympathetic character and doggedly pursues the truth.

— [She Wore Mourning] made for a pleasant read while presenting an interesting story.

— What a great story. Fabulous plot with interesting and complex characters. I was totally involved into the wee hours. Many twists and left waiting until the end. Highly recommended

— Wow! I just finished it. In one day! I could not stop reading it! This book grabs hold of you from the start. It’s a very well written detective novel. It pulls you not the story and is very emotional. You feel for the characters. This is the first novel I have read by this author but it will not be my last. I highly recommend this book.

Author Notes

Author Notes may contain spoilers

The inspirations for She Wore Mourning came from a lot of different places.

The idea for the title and all of the mourning jewelry worn by Isabella came from a dream about a woman who wore everything she could that had come from her deceased child, including wearing his baby teeth as pearls. A mother literally wearing her child to mourn his loss. This macabre yet poignant image stayed with me for a long time. Modern memorial jewelry is, thankfully, more tasteful than a string of baby teeth.

2. The hoarder and neat freak being married and trying to establish rules of engagement that would allow them to survive living together despite their opposite natures was an extension of personal/family experience.

3. Zachary Goldman is a deeply flawed but fundamentally good person who has experienced significant tragedy in his own life. Zachary’s background, including the Christmas Eve fire and the circumstances surrounding it, drew on the experience of a friend. I wanted to explore how personal trauma and psychological struggles made Zachary empathetic, an out-of-the-box thinker, and someone who didn’t give up easily. A unique profile for a private investigator.
