The Truth About Supporting Authors (Without Breaking the Bank)

You may have seen news reports about the suit against Meta for pirating 7.5 million books and 81 million academic papers to train the Llama LLM (artificial intelligence). Atlantis has introduced a database that allows authors to check if their works were included in Libgen’s dataset, and I’ve found that over 90 of my books were among those listed.

(Despite cannibalizing 90+ of my books, asking Llama to write in the style of P.D. Workman does not produce anything that sounds remotely like my writing.)

It it one thing to train AI on what is publicly available on the internet. It is quite another to assess the cost of purchasing book licenses and decide to steal them instead. The documents that have been filed in the class action suit clearly show that this was no innocent mistake. Meta and its officers knew exactly what they were doing and some employees did challenge their decision to obtain these books illegally.

So what does that have to do with you, as a reader?

This news has brought to light just how extensive book pirating is and how much money authors are losing to pirates. At least 90 of my books are available on pirate sites, and probably all of them are. There is no way I can prevent this. Even not offering ebooks does not prevent pirating, as print books can be very quickly scanned and digitized.

I assume that if you care enough about me as an author to read this blog or be on my newsletter list, you are not actively out there pirating my books! You want to support the authors you love. But you may have questions about pirating, so let’s dive into it!

How can I tell the difference between legitimate booksellers or e-libraries and pirates?Look for Established Retailers: You know the names of the major retailers—Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Kobo, Apple, Google Books, etc. My books are legitimately listed on all of those sites. If a site looks unprofessional or offers books at prices that seem too good to be true (especially if they’re free), it might be a pirate site.Use Trusted Library Services: A lot of pirates hide under the guise of being libraries. They offer monthly memberships, and readers think the site has actually licensed the ebooks and are legitimately lending them out, when they are stolen. How do you find legitimate online libraries?check your local library to see what ebook library services they give you access to, such as Libby, Hoopla, or Overdrivesome of the legitimate online subscription services, are Kindle Unlimited, Audible, Scribd, Everand, and Kobo Plus. (Note that KU and Audible frequently require that authors not offer their ebooks on any other sites, limiting their diversification potential. Kobo Plus and Scribd allow authors to publish on as many sites as they like.)more and more authors are offering direct subscriptions to their worksAsk the Question: A quick internet search will tell you in seconds whether a site is a pirate or a legitimate bookseller.How can I read my favorite authors if I am on a budget?Library Access: Request your favourite books and authors if your public library does not already carry them. As well as physical books, check to see what ebooks and audiobooks your library card will allow you access to.Book Sales & Promotions: Keep an eye out for sales and giveaways. Subscribe to my newsletter or follow me on social media to be notified when I have a sale on. Stuff Your eReader events are quite popular right now, as is BookBub.Used Bookstores & Online Marketplaces: Purchasing used books from thrift stores, online marketplaces (like AbeBooks), or charity shops is another budget-friendly option.Support Indie Authors Directly: More and more authors are selling their works directly and may offer special sales, bundles, coupons, or subscriptions. In reality, many writers rely on book sales for their income, and piracy can significantly affect their livelihood. While there are wealthy authors out there, many are just scraping by or need a regular full-time job in addition to their writing. Don’t steal from authors! Traditionally published authors make a lot of money: Many authors earn very little from traditional publishing deals after expenses and splits with agents/publishers are considered.What are other ways to support my favourite authors?Leave Reviews: Reviews on platforms like Goodreads or retail platforms can significantly impact an author’s visibility and sales.Engage on Social Media: Follow your favorite authors, share their posts, participate in discussions about their work, and recommend them to friends. As a longtime fan of the Magical Cats series by Sophie Kelly, I always look forward to revisiting this whimsical world after diving into more serious reads. Kelly has a wonderful knack for crafting light-hearted paranormal mysteries that keep readers engaged without feeling overwhelmed. The sprinkle of magic adds an enchanting layer to the story—who wouldn’t enjoy a cat that can disappear and another that walks through walls? I swear sometimes my cat has one of these powers. How else would she end up in a room that I had just shut the door to when she was on the other side of the door? And I can’t count the number of times I have heard her in the room, and looked up to see… nothing.

The issues of the magical propensity of cats aside, Kelly excels at weaving a solid mystery filled with intriguing clues that guide readers along the way. The cast of characters populating the town adds depth and charm—there’s the cop boyfriend, helpful neighbors, interesting coworkers at the library, and even two children dealing with difficult challenges after being removed from their alcoholic father’s custody.

In Furever After, book 16 in the Magical Cats series a thief meets his untimely demise while attempting to steal a painting that no one knew was valuable—and which shouldn’t even have been at the library in the first place. The initial phase of the mystery revolves around uncovering how this seemingly insignificant piece of art ended up there. As Kathleen digs deeper, supported by her internet-savvy feline companions, the reader is treated to an engaging blend of suspense and lighthearted moments that make this cozy mystery a delightful read.

And no spoilers here, but be prepared for a mushy ending with Kathleen’s own Furever After moment!

Furever After is another charming installment in Sophie Kelly’s beloved series, packed with mystery, magic, and heartwarming character dynamics. Happy Valentine’s Day, How About Some Books?

When it comes to Valentine’s Day gifting, chocolates delight your taste buds but quickly add to your waistline; flowers brighten your life but wilt and die in days, or worse, become a tasty snack for your cat! Restaurant reservations fill up in a frenzy and couples stress about what to wear and how to create the perfect romantic experience. And lingerie? A wise man once quipped that the best way to model it is by tossing it on the floor, because that’s where it is going to end up!

This is the first of PD Workman’s books I’ve read, and it certainly won’t be the last. The author has the ability to pull you into her story and keep you firmly rooted there until the end. Her characters are interesting and have depth. She isn’t afraid to explore the areas of our society that many would rather sweep under the rug. Instead she uses them in the story to create tension and believable characters. The author built the tension at the ending that had me holding my breath.

Elevate Your Writing Process: Using Callouts in Obsidian

Obsidian is a markdown editor. For an overview of how I use Obsidian when writing a novel, please read Organize and Write Your Next Novel with Obsidian.

I decided to try out the use of Obsidian Callouts to mark notes/information/tasks as I drafted my November book. I love the “Clue” callout from the “Fancy a Story” theme and thought it would be fun to use it to keep track of clues in my mysteries to make sure they are all resolved one way or another by the end of the story.

There are many different types of Callouts available in the default Obsidian setup or that can be added through alternate themes and CSS snippets. I didn’t want to go crazy with them, but to stick to a limited number of useful formats. If I am to be productive, I have to not spend all of my time testing out all of the different possibilities and tweaking code. I therefore limited myself to:

There are some other great Callout types available in the default Obsidian setup, Fancy a Story, Sanctum, ITS, and other themes and CSS snippets. Check them out! Fancy a Story includes a number of image gallery display modes I haven’t used, as well as email, letter, and text conversation callouts, and more. I may use their Comic callout for storyboarding at some point, but that isn’t something that I usually do. Both Timeline and Comic are possible alternatives for visual outlining if you don’t want to use Outline, Kanban, or Canvas. In Obsidian, you have many options!

Tracking things that needed to be followed up on

A [[!Todo]] callout (expanded) with a checkbox inside it for a scene note that needs to be made earlier in the story; and

A [[!Done]] callout (collapsed) for a scene note that needed to be done in a later scene and has now been completed.

A [[!Todo]] callout (expanded) with a series of scene follow-up checkboxes inside it, completed and incomplete.

When I finished all of the tasks within a Callout, I changed the Callout type from Todo to Done. It is very easy to just double-click the word “Todo” and type “Done”

Notes to be referred back to later or transferred to the series wiki

A [[!Note]] Callout (collapsed) for a piece of information that I needed to remember later, and

A [[!Clue]] Callout (collapsed) for a clue that will need to be referred back to later in the story/solution.

Clues to remember and follow up on

A [[!Clue]] callout (collapsed) for a one of the clues the detective will need to solve the mystery. It needs to be followed up on so that it isn’t orphaned or conflicted later on.

The same [[!Clue]] callout expanded to show details of why this detail is important.

Timeline

I used the Timeline Callout for the first time on my most recent book. Very handy for keeping a visual timeline of the backstory or main story. There are plenty of options for numbering and CSS options for styling. This one is very basic. It autonumbers and depending on how wide your frame is, the entries either alternate side or are all displayed on one side.

Just for fun

I nearly forgot about the Polaroid Callout from Fancy a Story Theme. This one is just because it looks cool. There are a lot of other nifty Callouts in Fancy a Story, I haven’t tried them all out, but the Comic callout might be fun for storyboarding, if you like to do that. And the Pinned and Paper fold Callouts are cool replacements for Note.

Keeping track of/making practical use of callouts

In order for Callouts to be a practical tool in a manuscript, you need to be able to find them all to make sure they have been dealt with. Here is a query for all Callouts in this draft, sorted by chapter, and the result.

Afterthoughts

I have tested out callouts in this way for five books now. I am ambivalent on using the Note callout. I have previously used a Note property in the yaml section of the chapter (each listed in a bulleted series). That seems to be a better place for my use (short bits of information I need to keep track of in the future). But if I need to make a longer note or am really in the groove and don’t want to go back to insert it into the yaml header, or if it needs to be positioned in relation to certain content, I insert it and then (if appropriate) cut and paste the info to my yaml header when I review/process the chapter.
