I am currently reading The Steel Kiss, a Lincoln Rhyme book by Jeffery Deaver. I have read one or two books in this series before, and they are very satisfying police procedural mysteries. I was irritated with Rhyme at one point in this book for failing to see a legal point, but he eventually got there after a number of false turns. He’s supposed to be brilliant, so I expect him to see such issues immediately. For this case, Rhyme has actually retired from the police force, but he ends up helping out his old partner Amelia Sachs anyway, when Rhyme’s civil suit and Sachs’s serial killer turn out to both be part of the same case.

Good, three dimensional characters in a vibrant New York setting. Even though this is book 12 in the series, you do not feel lost, each character and plot point is introduced with enough detail that you have the information you need to enjoy the case as a stand-alone mystery.

 I also appreciate the imagery of these books – they afford a wonderful armchair travel experience. I understand the author draws on personal encounters when choosing the parks featured in this series so I suppose that is why the descriptions are so vivid and detailed. I find I can easily visualize the scenery, I can almost feel the sun and smell the breeze.

A Mighty Fall

This case might just leave Margie feeling nostalgic about the water deaths she has been investigating lately.

Indigenous Peoples in and Around Calgary

Calgary is built on Treaty 7 land. Treaty 7 was signed in September 1877 between the Canadian government and five First Nations: the Siksiká, Kainai, Piikani, Stoney-Nakoda, and Tsuut’ina. This Treaty granted the Government of Canada a 130,000 km2 tract of land and did not allow them to continue their traditional lifestyles. The Treaty resulted in significant hardships and suffering for those Nations, although they continue to show their strength and resilience today. 

Three First Nations (Siksiká, Stoney Nakoda, and Tsuut’ina) have their territory just outside of Calgary city limits. In addition, many Indigenous people live within Calgary, representing a multitude of Nations from this continent. 

Some of the Indigenous Nations mentioned in this series include:

Métis – The Métis are a constitutionally recognized Indigenous Peoples (Métis Nation) in Canada. Their culture emerged from the association of European explorers and traders with the nations already living in what would come to be called Canada. The only remaining Métis self-governing land base in Canada is located in northern Alberta, with communities known as the Métis Settlements. For some Métis, their language is a mixed language of Cree and French,  called Michif. There are several variations of Michif, and it is currently spoken by fewer than 1000 people.

Siksiká Nation or Niitsitapiiks – part of the Blackfoot Confederacy. Their community lies to the east of Calgary. They speak Siksiká, an Algonquian language.

Stoney Nakoda – historically referred to as Rocky Mountain Sioux or Plains Assiniboine. Their communities lie to the west of Calgary. Composed of three Nations: The Bearspaw First Nation, Chiniki First Nation, and Wesley First Nation. The Stoney language is a variety of Dakota Siouan and is closely related to Assiniboine.

Tsuut’ina – historically referred to as Sarcee, which is considered offensive. Their community lies between and slightly to the south of the Stoney Nakoda and Calgary. Calgary is currently building a ring road through what was, until recently, Tsuut’ina land. This project has displaced a number of Tsuut’ina families.

This week’s teaser comes from The Anteater of Death by Betty Webb. A very nicely-done cozy. I would definitely read more in the series. A cozy mystery with a zoo full of animals behaving like animals and humans behaving like savages. Plenty of suspects, lots of twists and turns, and pleasant diversions into zoo life, boats, and the protagonist’s relationships with her family, coworkers, friends, and new love interest. The main character was more three-dimensional than the protagonists in a lot of other cozy mysteries. As an animal lover, I enjoyed reading about the social behaviors of the animals and how the keepers loved and cared for them.

Minor spoiler — the anteater is not guilty.

In zoo parlance, that means if one gets loose, run for your life.

Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead by Olga Tokarczuk was on the “mystery” shelf, but I am not sure I would classify it as such. It does involve a murder (in fact, a string of murders) which are solved at the end of the book, but it is very literary and does not at all follow the plot of a sleuth trying to solve the murders. Rather, it is an atmospheric book where it is very easy to get lost in the details of the descriptions of the land and culture the characters live in (Poland).

Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead was originally written in Polish in 2009 and published in English in 2019. The book was shortlisted for a number of prizes, and won the Nobel Prize for Literature shortly after it was published in English.

I knew very early on in the story who the killer was, so I was not surprised by the ending.

The title of this book is longer than the teaser itself:

“Please get dressed. Big Foot is dead.”

Read this yarn – Dead Men Don’t Crochet

I am currently reading Betty Hechtman’s Dead Men Don’t Crochet, a well-woven cozy mystery with some unexpected twists and tangles… okay, I’ll lay off the puns now! Dead Men Don’t Crochet has all of the expected tropes — a protagonist who works at the library and takes part in a crocheting club, solving murders on the side. Her boyfriend is a cop, of course, and while he keeps telling her not to interfere with the investigation, I assume he will give her a hand the moment she is in trouble. Good characters and a nice tone so far. Curl up by the fire for this cozy read.

“If he thinks he can just avoid dealing with me, he has another thought coming,” Sheila said and banged on the table for emphasis. We all jumped.
