Chew on this: Thirty-Three Teeth

Thirty-Three Teeth by Colin Cotterill is the second book that I have read in the Dr. Siri Paiboun Mystery series. (And though it is the second book in the series, the other one that I have read is actually #4, Anarchy and Old Dogs.) This mystery series is very different from any I have read before. It is steeped in the Lao setting and culture, with lots of fascinating plant names (like dog fart flowers and bull testicle trees), political red tape, and history.
Since the protagonist, Dr. Siri Paiboun, has been possessed by the spirit of an ancestor and has frequent encounters with the spirit world, there is a lot of Buddhist spiritualism as well. (If I have the terminology wrong, someone please correct me.) Dr. Siri Paiboun is the national coroner, and as such, he comes across some interesting deaths. However, in this post-communist-takeover era, he has only the most basic tools at his disposal and has to come up with some interesting methods of solving crimes.
She was constantly surprising him. Siri went over and held up Mr. A’s hand. All the fingertips were purple: triplicate syndrome.
Colin Cotterill, Thirty-Three Teeth
Dr. Siri Paiboun, one of the last doctors left in Laos after the Communist takeover, has been drafted to be national coroner. He is untrained for the job, but this independent seventy-two-year-old has an outstanding qualification for the role: curiosity. And he does not mind incurring the wrath of the party’s hierarchy as he unravels mysterious murders, because the spirits of the dead are on his side—and a little too close for comfort.
Dr. Siri performs autopsies and begins to solve the mysteries relating to a series of deaths by what seem to be bear bites, to explain why a government official ran at full speed through a seventh-story window and fell to his death, and to discover the origins of the two charred bodies from the crashed helicopter in the temple at Luang Prabang. As it turns out, not surprisingly, not all is peaceful and calm in the new Communist paradise of Laos.

A chilly read: Cover of Snow
It was a busy week around here last week. Careful of Thy Wishes, book #13 in the Reg Rawlins Psychic Investigator series launched on Friday (check out Careful of Thy Wishes and other new releases here.) I am currently in the midst of Jenny Milchman’s Cover of Snow. I thought that I had read something from this author before, but looking at her other publications, I can’t spot what I might have read previously, so maybe I have just heard her name before. Browsing through her books did reveal one thing, though, Milchman has a definite taste for writing books about the Adirondacks, and particularly winter weather in the Adirondacks.
Cover of Snow has an interesting premise. The main character’s husband (a policeman) commits suicide, and she is digging down, trying to understand why. It turns out there are a number of secrets hidden in the past, and at this point (more than halfway through the book) there are many indicators of a police coverup and conspiracy to keep her from finding anything out.
Expect plenty of snow scenes in this one! Dig into this chilly thriller and see what you think.

I am currently reading Big Little Lies by Lianne Moriarty. What a fascinating book! While it is a murder mystery, you don’t even know who has been killed or under what circumstances. You just know that one of the parents was killed during the (primary/elementary) school’s Trivia Night. The book takes you through the various conflicts and secrets that have been festering in each of the women’s and men’s lives over the past several months, building up to what happened at the Trivia Night?
I didn’t know until I searched it on Amazon that there is a TV series based on Big Little Lies, starring Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, and Shailene Woodley.

Well, first you probably want to know what Answer Your Cat’s Questions Day is all about! As you know, cats are known for being curious. If your cat is like the one around here, you might get a lot of questions!
Here is Q-Tip using the exercise bike to look out the window. What else is an exercise bike for?

1. Why can’t I eat those plants in the house?
Plants that are toxic to our feline friends include azaleas, mistletoe, lilies, holly, and more out of the house – keep them out of the house.
2. Why can’t I have all the milk?
Contrary to popular belief, cats shouldn’t have too much milk – particularly if your kitty is lactose intolerant. Cats will get diarrhea if they can’t properly digest milk, and also will be at higher risk of obesity if their diets aren’t closely watched.
3. Why can’t I scratch the sofa?
Scratching is normal for cats, and owners should make sure to provide adequate scratching posts to ensure their cats don’t get stressed or depressed.
4. Why do people think sleeping cats are lazy?
It’s just what they do. Cats spend 70% of their lives sleeping – around 13-17 hours of the day. It’s healthy and normal behavior, not laziness.
5. Why do humans declaw cats?
Not only is declawing your cat cruel, but it’s also dangerous to their overall safety and wellness. Look around online or ask your vet about the many safe ways to get your cat’s claw off your sofa.
There are lots of great suggestions in that article that suggest ways that you can spend National Answer Your Cat’s Questions Day. But they don’t suggest one of the most important, which is to read books about cats!

Finding out What She Knew
Hope you had a chance to pick up a copy of Gentle Angel while it was on sale. You may still be able to get some good deals from my blog post.

This week I am reading What She Knew by Gilly Macmillan. I don’t think I’ve read anything else by this author, but I would definitely read another. It has been a good read so far.
The “she” in the title refers to Rachel Jenner, a mom who is out walking in the woods with her son one day when he disappears, apparently kidnapped. It is a good police procedural/psychological suspense novel. Multiple perspectives, you get to see things from the mother’s point of view and the lead investigator’s, as they are both looking back on what happened.
Since they are looking back, the POV characters know things that the reader does not. I don’t get the feeling that the mother is an unreliable narrator, but we will see!
They saw me as a freak show. I frightened people because I was someone to whom the worst was happening, and they turned on me like a pack of dogs.

An absolutely fabulous read! It’s nearing Christmas, which is always a bad time for Zachary. While he is dealing with his seasonal depression, Kinsey is on the trail of a medical serial killer. His surgical internship takes him to the prestigious Philadelphia General Hospital where he begins training under the famous Dr. Richard Knight. I’ve picked up a few interesting books lately, but this one is the first one in a little while that is really remarkable. It will, hopefully, do very well and I will be looking for other books by this author.
People Like Her, by Ellery Lloyd (a pseudonym for a husband and wife team, actually) is about an “Instamum”, a mother who has built an Instagram following of thousands and who plays for the camera in order to get followers, sponsorship deals, clicks, and the opportunity to appear on TV. She supports her family with her insta-success, but has found that she needs to be somewhat less than honest in her postings to keep her followers happy and attract new ones.
And unfortunately, not everyone who sees her success is happy with it. The disturbing incidents are escalating as Emmy’s stalker gets close to the family and closer to violence.
Great insights into the world of social media influencers, the lengths people will go to for success, and how quickly it can all come tumbling down.
Ellery Lloyd writes convincingly from both Emmy’s and her husband’s perspective, which makes perfect sense with it being written by a husband and wife team.
