A New Year—Starting Over

Don’t worry, I am not abandoning my current series and starting over with something else! I am talking about books with characters who are starting over or starting a new venture. Many books begin with a character setting out on a new adventure, from cozy mysteries to coming of age young adult literature. Here are some of my books that feature a character who leaves behind her old life to start on something new.
@media screen and (min-width:768px){.ugb-9266625 .ugb-img{width:669px;height:auto !important}}Gluten-Free MurderErin Price moves to Bald Eagle Falls, a place where everyone knows everyone as well as everyone else’s business, taking over the store left to her by her aunt to start up a gluten-free bakery. The grand opening is marred by just one thing, the death of her business rival, Angela Plaint. It appears that Angela was poisoned by one of Erin’s cupcakes, making her a prime suspect.
Equipped with cupcakes, her desire for the truth, and new bakery assistant Vicky’s help, Erin goes head-to-head against Detective Terry Piper to solve the murder. Rumors of treasure hunting, drug dealing, and a missing boy swirl around Bald Eagle Falls as Erin tries to sort the clues from the red herrings and find the killer before the killer can take care of her. P.D. Workman has done it again! This introduction to a new series involves a fresh start, sympathetic characters, and a murder. I spent the last ten minutes of the book standing up to read because I was off to do something but just couldn’t put it down until I got to the end. I haven’t been that invested in a book in a while.
Couldn’t put it down !! From a cute kitten to a police dog to a bakery for people with allergies ! Highly recommend!

There’s nothing like jumping straight into the deep end.
Margie Patenaude is new in town and wasn’t expecting to get called to a murder scene on her daughter’s first day of school.
It’s an ugly murder in a beautiful setting. How can Calgary’s park-goers feel safe with a murderer still on the streets—or pathways? Margie and the team are on the case while at the same time she and her daughter try to acclimatize to the new city.
If she wants her coworkers to believe that she’s not just a ‘diversity hire,’ she needs to show them what she’s made of and track this killer down.
This promises to be a wonderful series with fantastic characters, interesting locations, and fascinating glimpses into different cultures. The story is of novella length and can easily be read in one sitting if so desired, there is no offensive language, no sex, no graphic violence – just a whopping good story everyone can enjoy.

Nadie is a bright, caring teen growing up Manitoba Cree growing up in abject poverty. She tries to balance school attendance, caring for her younger cousin Luyu, and spending time with handsome, impish Mouse, her best friend and confidante. Together, they strive to find the path to happiness on the reservation.
But tragedy strikes and Nadie’s is devastated by Luyu’s accidental death. Unable to find comfort in Mouse’s arms or Grandfather’s traditional mourning rites, Nadie leaves the band and strikes off on her own, searching for meaning and a new life in the outside world.
Can Nadie find happiness and a place of her own in a foreign world where she is abused and discriminated against? Completely alone for the first time in her life, it is a challenge such as Nadie has never before faced.
“Easily one of the most thought-provoking and compelling reads of the year, Ms. Workman has written a masterful contemporary account of one native teen’s journey from home and the possibilities for hope even for those drowning in poverty, prejudice, and addiction. Examining hard concepts such as death, rape, abuse, neglect, addiction, and wounds passed down from generation to generation, this story is full of raw emotion that will bring the reader to tears, yet unable to put the smoothly-paced story down. With true-to-life characters both good and bad, Nadie is inspirational. It isn’t because she’s perfect but rather because she is far from it and somehow manages to find the courage in the end to become someone who can help bring her tribe forward. A must-read tale for any book lover!“

Secrets and lies.
When everything changed, Kelli thought she would be happy. But nothing really changed.
Kelli’s life has never been easy. She’s always faced her problems head on. She’s strong and savvy and in charge of herself. All of that is about to change.
Her life is turned upside down when she discovers the secret that her mother has been hiding from her for years.
Kelli thinks this is her one chance at happiness. But is it?
“I cheered for Kellie, hoping she would find the love and validation she always lacked and would finally find peace within herself. If you’ve never tried PD Workman’s novels, then I recommend you do. If you’re already a fan, you won’t be disappointed with this story.”

Tamara had thought that when she got out of juvie, things would be easier. But before long, it seems like her life is spiraling into chaos.
If she can’t prove to her probation officer that she is innocent of the allegations against her, she’s going back to prison, and Tamara just can’t let that happen.
Readers will appreciate the realistic details about Tamara’s release, her issues dealing with a foster family, her emotional triggers, and the challenges facing someone trying to maintain the conditions of parole. For those teens who love books where all that can go wrong does go wrong (isn’t that almost all of them?), this is a winner.

Henry and other New Releases

I am excited to announce the release of Henry, Breaking the Pattern, book #1 in the Breaking the Pattern series.
This is the re-release of an old series, one of the first that I published. It has been re-edited and polished, and been given a new title and new cover. I love the beautiful new covers on this series.
I didn’t know much about releasing or marketing books back then, and pretty much just put these books out there and hoped someone would pick them up. They had terrible titles and covers and not surprisingly did not attract a lot of attention. So it’s time to give the series a second chance!
If you are a reader of contemporary young adult books such as those by John Green and Stephen Chbosky, give this series a try!

“You’re a good kid, Henry.”
Everyone knew that he was a good guy; geeky, responsible, hard-working. Henry has had a lot to deal with in the past. Now, as he should be focusing on his schooling and preparing himself for the future, he is hindered by abuse, the challenge of raising his baby brother while dealing with his mother’s deep depressions, and the return of a ghost from the past Henry has tried his best to forget.
But it seems that Henry can’t avoid the nastiness of life. As hard as he tries, it’s one more disaster after another as his life spirals out of control.
Can Henry escape the darkness, or is he doomed to be consumed by it? A heartwarming, sad, intense story that will keep you turning pages until the end… P.D. Workman has a wonderful gift

Seventeen-year-old Julie Clarke has her future all planned out—move out of her small town with her boyfriend Sam, attend college in the city; spend a summer in Japan. But then Sam dies. And everything changes.
Heartbroken, Julie skips his funeral, throws out his belongings, and tries everything to forget him. But a message Sam left behind in her yearbook forces memories to return. Desperate to hear him one more time, Julie calls Sam’s cell phone just to listen to his voice mail recording. And Sam picks up the phone.
The connection is temporary. But hearing Sam’s voice makes Julie fall for him all over again and with each call, it becomes harder to let him go.
What would you do if you had a second chance at goodbye?

Sixteen-year-old Sabine Braxton doesn’t have much in common with her identical twin, Blythe. When their father dies from an unexpected illness, each copes with the loss in her own way—Sabine by “poeting” (an uncontrollable quirk of bursting into poetry at inappropriate moments) and Blythe by obsessing over getting into MIT, their father’s alma mater. Neither can offer each other much support . . . at least not until their emotionally detached mother moves them into a ramshackle Bay Area mansion owned by a stranger named Charlie.
Soon, the sisters unite in a mission to figure out who Charlie is and why he seems to know everything about them. They make a life-changing discovery:their parents were hiding secrets about their sexual identities. The revelation unravels Sabine’s world, while practical Blythe seems to take everything in stride. Once again at odds with her sister, Sabine chooses to learn all she can about the father she never knew. Ultimately, she must decide if she can embrace his last wish for a family legacy–even if it means accepting a new idea of what it means to be a family.

When the one you trust betrays you, you have two options: forgive them and walk away or burn everything to the ground.
Ever since her mother moved her entire family to Toronto, sixteen-year-old Emily has spent the last three years trying to fit in at Trinity Collegiate. But this uppity, private high school feels more like a prison to an outspoken Jamaican teen navigating her new life in Canada.
When a string of mysterious fires breaks out in a vulnerable part of the city, Emily meets a familiar face and is forced to find her voice and speak up for what’s right. But at what cost? Living between two worlds, Emily walks the fine line between belonging and being rejected by the person she trusts the most.

The story is of Eddy Sky, a teenage misanthrope who firmly believes that the rules of society should not apply to him, nor to any truly free individual. Disillusioned by his upper-class family, his small-town Australia surroundings and the modern world in general, he leaves for the city, determined to make his own way & leave his own mark.

Her mom wants her to be “normal,” to pass as hearing, to get a good job. But in a time of food scarcity, environmental collapse, and political corruption, Piper has other things on her mind—like survival.
Piper has always been told that she needs to compensate for her Deafness in a world made for those who can hear. But when she meets Marley, a new world opens up—one where Deafness is something to celebrate, and where resilience means taking action, building a com-munity, and believing in something better.
Published to rave reviews as Future Girl in Australia (Allen & Unwin, Sept. 2020), this empowering, unforgettable story is told through a visual extravaganza of text, paint, collage, and drawings. Set in an ominously prescient near future, The Words in My Hands is very much a novel for our turbulent times.

How long can you pretend to be okay? And when do you start fighting for yourself?
Over a year ago the life Victoria (Tori) Adams had vanished. The cheerleader, the happy daughter, the extrovert—they all disappeared the night Tori attempted suicide. In an effort to save her, her parents moved her from the dry deserts of Arizona to a small coastal town in Connecticut. Now she’s standing on a frozen, desolate beach, constantly afraid to say the wrong thing to her mom, hiding the dark thoughts that plague her mind, and fighting to stay.
When Tori discovers a secret room in her new house and its connection to the slightly-annoying-but-definitely-cute Nick Janus from auto shop class, she’s stuck between a painful past and torturous present. But as time passes and relationships deepen, Tori realizes that even though she’s still alive, she has a lot to learn about living.

From USA Today Bestselling Author, P.D. Workman!
This time, it’s one of their own!
After working underground to reunited apprehended teens with their parents for as long as they have, Gabriel and Renata have seen it all. But this time, it’s personal. When the young children of one of the families who have helped with the movement are seized, they prepare to do whatever it takes to have them returned before more damage can be done.
While Carmel and her family have been staunch supporters of the underground movement, they had never revealed their own experiences with DCFS. Now their history and their alliance with Gabriel and Renata have come back to haunt them.
A family torn apart.
Two innocent children being used to even the score.
It’s time to bring them home.
The Medical Kidnap Files is one of the most underrated series’ I’ve ever read, and, speaking as a disabled person, each book has absolutely excellent disability rep.
Looking for something new in young adult literature? A fast-paced adventure with diverse characters that will keep you turning the pages.
Join Gabriel and Renata on their mission today!
+ Praise for Medical Kidnap Files
—A phenomenal read! The story line is both exasperating and inspiring. Is it a conspiracy or crazy thoughts? You have to read to the end to know for sure.
—I thoroughly enjoyed Mito. I didn’t want to put any it down.
—The incipient relationship between Gabriel and Renata, both in awful situations, was fascinating and I was intrigued by the very original theme of the book. I hope it really is a work of fiction!
—The plot was FANTASTIC. I’ve read a lot of stories about foster children, but never anything quite like what happens in Mito. I never even realized that medical kidnap could very well be a thing happening “behind the scenes” in foster care, but after reading this book my mind is blown.

In suspense with Mother May I
Season’s Greetings! I hope that your Christmas went well and you had some quiet time to read a few books. Or maybe you have some quiet time now that all of the festivities are (sort of) over and have a chance to squeeze some reading in. If you are looking for some books set around Christmas time, check out last week’s blog post Curl up with a Christmas book.
Keep an eye on my social media this week for special Boxing Day sales!
Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme. Read the rules and more teasers at The Purple Booker. Anyone can play along.
Looking over what I have read recently, I have picked out Mother May I, by Joshilyn Jackson. This book will require you to suspend disbelief to a certain degree. I had a hard time believing that someone would behave the way that the protagonist mother did in this book, but if you can get past that, there are plenty of chills and thrills in this one.
Just what would you be willing to do if your child was abducted? How far would you be willing to go to get him back?
I did see that the story would need to end the way it did, but wasn’t quite sure how the author was going to handle it. I’m glad she wound it up the way that she did. No spoilers here, you’ll have to read it yourself, then I think you will know what I mean!
I knew because when I was growing up, my mother called the police on the regular. She lived convinced that my father might come back, even after he’d gone to prison. Even after he was dead.

Growing up poor in rural Georgia, Bree Cabbat was warned that the world was a dark and scary place. Bree rejected that fearful outlook, and life has proved her right. Having married into a family with wealth, power, and connections, Bree now has all a woman could ever dream of.
Until the day she awakens and sees someone peering into her bedroom window—an old gray-haired woman dressed all in black who vanishes as quickly as she appears. It must be a play of the early morning light or the remnant of a waking dream, Bree tells herself, shaking off the bad feeling that overcomes her.
Later that day though, she spies the old woman again, in the parking lot of her daughters’ private school . . . just minutes before Bree’s infant son, asleep in his car seat only a few feet away, vanishes. It happened so quickly—Bree looked away only for a second. There is a note left in his place, warning her that she is being is being watched; if she wants her baby back, she must not call the police or deviate in any way from the instructions that will follow.
The mysterious woman makes contact, and Bree learns she, too, is a mother. Why would another mother do this? What does she want? And why has she targeted Bree? Of course Bree will pay anything, do anything. It’s her child.
To get her baby back, Bree must complete one small—but critical—task. It seems harmless enough, but her action comes with a devastating price.
Bree will do whatever it takes to protect her family—but what if the cost tears their world apart?

Curl up with a Christmas book

It’s time for some Christmas reading! If you’re looking for some books set on or around Christmas (or other winter holidays) you have come to the right place. Stack them up and curl up by the fire (or your TV playing an endless Christmas log loop?) and get reading.
My latest release, Gentle Angel, A Kenzie Kirsch Medical Thriller #4 is set at Christmas time. Not your usual holiday book, Kenzie Kirsch is investigating a possible serial killer murder while Zachary is battling his annual depressive cycle. (If you’ve read She Wore Mourning or He Was Walking Alone in the Zachary Goldman Mysteries series, which are also both set at Christmastime, you know that a traumatic incident from Zachary’s past contributes to this yearly cycle.)
@media screen and (min-width:768px){.ugb-c06d719 .ugb-img{width:640px;height:auto !important}}Gentle AngelA killer is out there.
A serial killer who appears to have a personal grudge against Kenzie Kirsch.
The Assistant Medical Examiner has enough on her plate dealing with a personal crisis and doesn’t need the added challenge of FBI Agent Menendez’s unrealistic expectations and trying to identify the killer herself.
As Christmas approaches, things are getting more and more complicated and it feels like everything is coming apart. P.D. Workman never fails to deliver an intriguing mystery with plenty of thrills, drama, and unexpected twists that will hold your attention from start to finish. The characters are believable, with flaws and attributes that will endear them to the reader. The stories always have, at their heart, socially relevant topics that are explored with compassion, intelligence, and dignity.
If you are a reader of the Zachary Goldman Mysteries series, you have already met Kenzie Kirsch. This series is a spinoff from Zachary Goldman Mysteries, giving Kenzie a front-and-center position in solving medical mysteries.
Looking for a strong female lead in an engaging medical mystery? Award-winning and USA Today Bestselling Author P.D. Workman brings you an up-and-coming Medical Examiner’s Assistant who is right up your alley.

What kind of a monster poisons a psychic’s cat?
When Starlight first fell ill, Reg thought that she was the cause of it. She should have been watching him more carefully. She should have found out about household plants and chemicals that could hurt her familiar. She was clearly a negligent owner.
But it soon becomes clear that there is some darker force at work, and Reg is going to need all of her resources to find the culprit before it is too late if she is to have any chance of saving her furry companion’s life.

Now, Erin can make a lot of awesome baking that I cannot, both because she can use ingredients that I can’t eat (I am one of those people with multiple intolerances and allergies) and because she has time to experiment and bake when I am spending my time writing new books for you! I have collected thousands of recipes and not even tried 10% of them. I don’t generally bake loaves of bread; I keep tortillas and pancakes in my freezer and on special occasions make sandwich rolls. I don’t want to give you recipes that I haven’t tested myself, so that limits the number of recipes I can share.
The good news is, during the Christmas holiday, I pulled together a few of my tried, tested, and true recipes and made them available to you for a free download. These are recipes that I spent years adapting and creating. I will continue to add recipes to it in the future.
I will plan to add to this recipe collection in coming months/years as I have more time to bake and write down the ingredients. For now, I am starting small! (Very small!)
I hope you find these recipes useful.

A Christmas extravaganza in Mayfair, Florida, complete with an ice skating rink. What could go wrong?
When Mayfair’s newly-minted Chamber of Commerce goes off the rails and decides to build an ice skating rink, a decades-old skeleton is uncovered. The secrets it reveals threaten more than the town’s Christmas plans. Feeling responsible since the let’s-attract-more-tourists idea was hers initially, service dog trainer Marcia Banks is determined to help her police detective boyfriend solve the mystery—whether he wants her help or not. Maybe she can wheedle more out of the townspeople than he can.
Will she and her Black Lab, Buddy, keep the ghost of Christmas past from destroying what is left of Mayfair’s founding family, or will her meddling make things worse?
This novella is Book 4 in the series. While the characters grow and change over the course of the series, each book contains its own stand-alone mystery.

‘Tis the season for eggnog and envy.
One little Christmas party.
Sounds harmless, except Dr. Hope Sze feels raw and unsociable at the moment
Still, Hope looks forward to the Middle Eastern homecooked meal. And she really ought to socialize with her new colleagues from Ottawa’s stem cell research team, even if it means cheering on the Senators hockey team or dancing to “Uptown Funk” with people she barely knows.
Then one of the guests collapses at the dinner table.
Another one drops the wine.
Who poisoned this tableful of Ph.D.’s?
And can Hope save their lives and solve this mystery before the holiday cheer of this Blue Christmas becomes a fatal festivity?
Publish or perish takes on a whole new turn ’round the Christmas tree this year.

Centuries’ old secrets. A modern grail quest. A search for truth…
When archaeology student Hiram Kane meets a mysterious stranger who claims to be a descendent of the last British Templar Knight, what starts out as a quiet night in the pub with friends for Christmas drinks quickly turns into a modern grail quest and a lethal search for truth.
The problem is, they’re not the only ones searching, and their rivals are armed and deadly.
In a race against time that spans the length of Britain, and sees Hiram visiting legendary archaeological sites and battling nefarious secret societies, the young student develops a taste for adventure and learns of his innate gift for attracting danger.
With history on the line and truths to be uncovered, Kane must lead his friends to victory in what rapidly descends into a fight for their very lives.

Detective Luc Moncrief races through New York and Paris to track down a killer . . . and find out who is stealing the world’s greatest art.
In the heart of the holiday season, priceless paintings have vanished from a Park Avenue murder scene. Now, dashing French detective Luc Moncrief must become a quick study in the art of the steal . . . before a cold-blooded killer paints the town red. Merry Christmas, Detective.

Four Christmas mysteries to bring good cheer
What makes Christmas special?
Is it the tree and the decorations?
Is it the excitement of giving and receiving presents?
Is it the gathering of family and friends?
Experience four different takes on Christmas: the pleasure of shutting up shop and exchanging gifts, the whirl of Christmas shopping in London, a present hunt in nineteenth-century India, and a Sherlock Holmes tale featuring a pudding with a twist! Each story links to a different mystery series, but the stories can stand alone too.
This short, feel-good collection is perfect for enjoying with a slice of Christmas cake, or for reading with your feet up after a session of Christmas shopping or present wrapping – or for popping under the tree!

Not even a blizzard can keep Rex Graves away from Swanmere Manor, an historic hotel on the rolling Sussex Downs.
But instead of Christmas cheer, the Scottish barrister finds a dead guest. Was it a stroke that killed old Mr. Lawdry? Or an almond tart laced with poison? When more guests die, all hopes for a merry holiday are dashed.
On top of all, the remote mansion is snowbound; confined with a killer, no one can leave. The resourceful Rex takes it upon himself to solve the intriguing mystery.
Could the killer be the sherry-swilling handyman? The gay antiques dealer with a biting wit? The quarreling newlyweds? Surely, it’s not Helen d’Arcy, the lovely lass Rex seems to be falling for…

Christmas during World War II is a time for small miracles in this bittersweet short story by the New York Times bestselling author of The Tuscan Child and In Farleigh Field.
Jack and Maggie Harris are adrift on ravaged streets during the London Blitz. Their home is gone. They have nowhere to go and nothing left to lose. With only the memories of their greatest loss—the death of their child during a Christmas years before—Jack and Maggie settle in a seemingly deserted mansion for the night.
Inside they find shelter, warmth, and a bit of cheer. They also discover a surprise. Now, in the darkest of times, the unexpected compassion of strangers will make this Christmas one to remember forever.

If you’ve got a problem, Charlie Kingsley probably has a tea that’ll help make it right.
EXCEPT when it comes to love. She does NOT do love potions.
Not even for Courtney, her pregnant new client who showed up three weeks before Christmas seeking a love potion because her husband was cheating on her.
So, Courtney asked about poison, instead.
She said she was joking. That’s what happens between wives and husbands. They get angry and talk about killing each other. They don’t really mean it.
It seems to make sense … until Courtney’s husband turns up dead on Christmas Eve.
He was poisoned, of course.
And who is the number one suspect? Courtney. Of course.
But did she actually do it? Or is she being set up?
It’s up to Charlie to sort through all the twists and turns in a case that gets more complicated the deeper she digs.

Something could happen in the Blink of an Eye

Gentle Angel, A Kenzie Kirsch Medical Thriller #4 released on Friday! If you haven’t purchased it yet, have a look! There is a sample on the book page or you can listen to me read the first chapter if you prefer. It can be read as a stand alone or together with the rest of the series for even more enjoyment. The Kenzie Kirsch series is a spin-off from the Zachary Goldman Mysteries series, so expect to bump into some old friends. Other new releases are also included in my blog post. If you’ve already read everything in your TBR pile (yeah, right!) then take a look and pick up your next read.
Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme. Read the rules and more teasers at The Purple Booker. Anyone can play along.
I recently read Blink of an Eye (Kendra Michaels Book 8) by Roy and Iris Johansen. I think this is the first Kendra Michaels book I have read, though I’m not 100% sure. There was enough back story to understand what was going on and the relationships that each character had with each other. Although there was some deeper stuff going on with Kendra and her flame that I was left wondering about and may have to go back a few books to figure out! Which is exactly how authors should pull you into their series!
A young friend is kidnapped and Kendra (formerly blind and highly observant) is on the case, helping the FBI to solve the clues. She’s not actually acting in any official capacity, she is just concerned about the kidnapped girl and has some skills to offer.
An entertaining read with plenty of suspense. Even though you know that everything will probably work out in the end, it’s hard to see how it is all going to come together and work out in the end. I did guess the identity of the kidnapper before it was revealed, and part of that was through clues that might be more obvious in the audiobook than in the text.
I’ll just leave you to think about that!
“We got away from them!” Dee collapsed back in her seat, her face wreathed in smiles. “For a minute, I thought they had us. What a way to go, Jessie!”
Roy and Iris Johansen, Blink of an Eye

Delilah Winter is one of the hottest pop stars on the planet, so how in the world was she kidnapped right in the middle of a show at the famous Hollywood Bowl? If anyone can figure it out, it’s Dr. Kendra Michaels, who works with local and federal authorities on only the most impossible cases. Blind for the first twenty years of her life until a revolutionary surgical procedure allowed her to regain her sight, Kendra uses her powers of observation—honed during her years in the dark—to detect what other investigators don’t. She agrees to lead the race to rescue the young singer before time runs out.
Joined by Jessie Mercado, the singer’s former bodyguard and a military hero, Kendra closes in on the hideout location but not before casualties mount up. Desperate for leads, Kendra must set aside her personal feelings when agent-for-hire Adam Lynch also volunteers his special skills to aid in the search.
But as the abductor’s true purpose becomes clear, the trio uncover a plot they never could have imagined—leading to a showdown they won’t soon forget.

Forensic pathologist Kay Scarpetta has come almost full circle, returning to Virginia as the chief medical examiner, the state where she launched her storied career. Finding herself the new girl in town once again after being away for many years, she’s inherited not only an overbearing secretary, but also a legacy of neglect and potential corruption.
She and her husband Benton Wesley, now a forensic psychologist with the U.S. Secret Service, have relocated to Old Town Alexandria where she’s headquartered five miles from the Pentagon in a post-pandemic world that’s been torn by civil and political unrest. Just weeks on the job, she’s called to a scene by railroad tracks where a woman’s body has been shockingly displayed, her throat cut down to the spine, and as Scarpetta begins to follow the trail, it leads unnervingly close to her own historic neighborhood.
At the same time, a catastrophe occurs in a top-secret laboratory in outer space, endangering at least two scientists aboard. Appointed to the highly classified Doomsday Commission that specializes in sensitive national security cases, Scarpetta is summoned to the White House and tasked with finding out exactly what happened. But even as she works the first potential crime scene in space remotely, an apparent serial killer strikes again very close to home.

A mysterious package is delivered to Hamilton DeShear and Jaden Trinn – by a driver who then brutally commits suicide on their property.
The box contains a message from Dr. Marcus Hauser, who everyone is certain is dead, stating: When the couple’s adopted young daughter was in Hauser’s custody, an explosive device was implanted in her head. It will detonate in 72 hours and kill her – unless DeShear comes to a secret location.
The obvious trap will deliver DeShear to Angelus Genetics, a criminal enterprise the couple shut down, but they can’t risk their young daughter’s life.
Dr. Hauser’s lost artificial intelligence program might be the key to subverting his plan – if Trinn can find it in time. The one person who can operate it is 4,000 miles away, locked up in prison, and has sworn to kill her.

It was only the beginning.

Don’t go overboard with Devil’s Breath

Looking for a good snowbound mystery to read, cozied up to your fire? Or someplace else cozy? Check out last week’s blog post.
Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme. Read the rules and more teasers at The Purple Booker. Anyone can play along.
Another new-to-me author this week. I am reading Devil’s Breath, the sixth book in G.M. Malliet’s Max Tudor Mystery series. Not having read the previous books in the series, I am a little confused as to why the police would involve a former-MI5-operative-turned-vicar in the murder of a film star aboard a yacht. But whatever it takes to get the sleuth into the plot, I guess!
This is a nice closed-circle murder mystery, with the only people who could have committed the murder all being trapped on a boat together. But there are plenty of suspects. It seems like everyone had a motive to kill Margot Browne for one reason or another. There are jealousies, drugs, possible blackmail, and maybe more!
Nice colourful characters. Sleuth Max Tudor and his friend DCI Cotton are the only ones who recur from the other books in the series, as far as I can tell, so the others don’t have much backstory. I wonder exactly what the baron and his wife are hiding, if they are, in fact, a baron and baroness!
And I’m not yet sure what the “Devil’s Breath” title refers to. It doesn’t seem to be the scopolamine-producing plant, which I had first assumed. But we’ll see…
Her thoughts this evening on the unfairness of life may have sprung from the fact she would soon have to wrestle her spandex body shaper in what had become a daily face-off.
G.M. Malliet, Devil’s Breath

Having realized there is no escape from his past as an agent, Max has offered his services to MI5 on an as-needed basis. Now it’s time for him to follow through. The body of glamorous film star Margot Browne has washed ashore from a luxury yacht and Max’s former colleague wants his help to find the murderer.
It’s a perfect “closed circle” murder since victim Margot must have been killed by one of the actors, stylists, screenwriters, or second-tier royalty aboard. The investigation into Margot’s lurid past uncovers a host of motives—it seems she was not the only person on board with a secret they’d kill to keep.

P D Workman has done it again; created a cast of characters and a storyline that are captivating and enthralling. Once I started this cozy I didn't want to put it down (which can be a bad thing when you have a family to take care of...lol). I can't wait for the other books in this series. I think Reg is going to turn out to be one of my favorite new characters.

—Another great work of art by Ms. Workman. I am amazed at the diversity of her writing and how much I really enjoy them all. She can write cozy mystery, YA books that should be read by all, medical thrillers, Zach Goldman series and now a paranormal series. I am so glad to have found this author. I am honored that I get to read them early also.
—This book has all my favourite things: heart, great writing, nearly-flawless editing, something unusual in the air, and a cat. I needed a light read, and this fit the bill perfectly. Recommended.
—This book actually surprised me. I knew that a psychic cat would be entertaining. I just didn’t expect it to be this good. You really do get wrapped up in the people and story. It sounds like a fairly gentle story, but there is a lot of suspense involved. Add a bunch of humor to the mix and you are in for a treat. I love the characters. Wish I had some friends like them. And the cat is so very well done. Acts like a typical cat, but a lot smarter than his human. This is a story that you don’t want to put down.
—Extremely well written as are all of P.D. Workman’s books, the characters well developed. I’m a character reader, I get into the characters. Who and what they are. Why they do the things they do. The things that make a reader get invested into the characters and thereby the book. I look forward to P.D. Workman’s next book.

+ Praise for P.D. Workman
“Every single one of [P.D. Workman’s] books has spoken to me in ways no one or almost anything else has. And I have found strength in the books I’ve read.”
“The way that P.D. Workman writes just flows amazingly and allows the reader to get really invested in a book.”
“This is one author I certainly will be looking out for, I can’t recommend her enough.”
“I’ll read anything by P. D. Workman that I can get my hands on.”
“Every book by PD Workman that I’ve read has been a gripping one, however different the genres are, going from lighter mysteries to really dark ones… this is one of my favourite, most dependable authors.”
“P.D. Workman is an incredibly versatile writer. No matter which of her books I read I am drawn into a great story and honestly, I don’t think I’ve followed another author that could go from cozy mystery to YA to a PI series dealing with mental health issues. Really enjoy her books!”
“[P.D. Workman’s] stories are so believable and you can’t help but feel like you know these people. You find yourself crying, laughing and feeling the characters emotions. Now if an author can make you cry and feel every emotion in a story, she is one hell of an author.”
