Did you pick up a copy of Undiscovered Tomb yet? It was just released this weekend. This is your chance to check out the latest book in the Reg Rawlins, Psychic Investigator series. Undiscovered Tomb can be read as a stand-alone adventure or enjoyed with the rest of the series. You can also download the first book in the series for free. Check out my blog post! Full of other new releases that might find their way to your TBR pile!
Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme. Read the rules and more teasers at The Purple Booker. Anyone can play along.
I have read several books with rather dark themes lately, and even though I have enjoyed them, I decided I needed a lighter pick-me-up for my next read. Scrolling through my library app wasn’t bringing me much joy—it must be the season for darker mysteries and thrillers—and then I spotted an Aunt Dimity book. I’ve read a few books in this series, so I grabbed it and started in. Well, a couple of chapters in, and Aunt Dimity & the Summer King by Nancy Atherton was more than just a reintroduction to some familiar characters—I’ve read it before. But I remember it as being a fun, pleasant read, with interesting characters and a good premise. Not just fluff, but something I could sink my teeth into. So I’m going to read it again!
Aunt Dimity is a ghost, by the way, who helps the main character solve her mysteries. It is not heavy on the paranormal, and Lori still has to solve the crime using her own brain, but don’t be surprised when she does consult the cottage’s resident ghost!
They criticized my posture, my table manners, my dress sense, and my speech, but they did so solicitously, as if they were bringing enlightenment to a savage who’d been raised on a desert island by a troop of baboons.
Nancy Atherton, Aunt Dimity and the Summer King

It’s June, the roses are in bloom, and the small English village of Finch may be in big trouble. Two cottages are for sale, but something—or someone—is driving buyers away. Has a developer targeted Finch? Will property values skyrocket? Will a wave of wealthy weekenders drive out the longtime locals?
Lori Shepherd has a lot on her plate—a brand-new baby daughter, her father-in-law’s impending nuptials, and a visit from her dreaded aunts-in-law—but she refuses to stand back and watch while big money destroys her beloved village. Lori suspects that a local real estate agent is illicitly lining her pockets at Finch’s expense, but before she can prove it, she’s sidetracked by a chance encounter with an eccentric inventor. Arthur Hargreaves, dubbed the Summer King by his quirky family, is as warmhearted as the summer sun. In his presence, Lori forgets her troubles—and Finch’s. Lori snaps out of her happy trance when a series of unsettling discoveries shakes her faith in Arthur Hargreaves. She stumbles across a detailed map of Finch in Hillfont Abbey. An ancient feud between Finch and the Hargreaves family comes to light. Arthur appears to be making secret deals with the shady realtor. Is the Summer King as kind as he seems?
With Aunt Dimity’s otherworldly help—and her new baby girl in her arms—Lori mounts a crusade to save her village from the Summer King’s scorching greed.

Her new paranormal…
Powerful rings, a couple of cuddly kitties, and never-ending ice cream in the freezer; Reg would have thought that she would be happy with her new normal. Or paranormal. But it isn’t quite as much fun as it sounds like.
With at least one of the cats determined to shred her domestic bliss and the relentless restlessness of the rings, Reg tries to move things in the right direction.
But Egypt isn’t all lollypops and rainbows either. It’s hot. It’s dusty. And Reg had hoped to have put her mummy issues behind her.

I love this series with its quirky, lovable characters, its engaging story lines and the imaginative, original world-building that keeps me coming back for one book after another. I have yet to read anything by this author that wasn’t well worth every second of the time I spent with each book.
P.D. Workman’s witchy writing carries you through a world that can make you stop and wonder. Could something like this really happen? Could it be possible? You sure wish it could be. Even the smile you have at the end says this might just be the beginning of a magical new life.
Like paranormal mysteries? Psychics, witches, fairies, and more! Award-winning and USA Today Bestselling Author P.D. Workman waves her wand to transport readers to the myth- and magic-filled small town of Black Sands for another paranormal cozy mystery to be solved by Reg Rawlins and her friends.

It’s tough being a witch. My sworn enemy, an outlaw vampire, just sent a killer pixie to my hometown.
I’ve been lucking out lately—great boyfriend, magical friends, and a peaceful career in a dusty, rural western town that I’m absolutely in love with. But good luck can’t last forever, can it? Now I have a flying assassin on my tail, a vampire bodyguard who shoots first and thinks later, and a lunch date with my boyfriend’s mother.
She’s never met me, and yet she can’t stand me. I want to win her over, but how am I supposed to do that while I’m trying to survive this craziness?
When a dead body turns up matters get complicated, and not in the cute dating-status kind of way. If I don’t find out whodunnit, and quick, I might end up behind bars.
This is a paranormal cozy mystery with no graphic violence, bedroom activities, or swearing. Just quirky characters, puzzling clues, and a bat named Diva who likes to wear glitter and lipstick.

Forty-something Selene Atwood is ready to start a new chapter in her life. Divorced and with a very empty nest, she’s determined to restore the ancient estate and turn it into a trendy new B&B.
The only thing darker and more mysterious than the dilapidated old castle is the owner, Cullen Hale. A self-made man in his own right, millionaire Cullen has fervently guarded his privacy. Selene can’t help wonder why he’s chosen her of all people to manage his new business endeavor.
When the castle’s groundskeeper is found murdered in the giant hedge maze, Selene finds herself accused of the crime. She’s got to prove to Cullen—and the county Sheriff—that she’s innocent. Which means she must find the killer herself.
Luckily, she’s got Presto, a magic cat. The snarky ginger cat can lend a paw when he’s not sulking around like a spoiled prince.
Hale Hall is a place where paranormal entities check in, but they don’t check out. Can Selene and Prestofind the killer in time, or will they end up as lost souls haunting the castle walls?

“Be careful whom you invite to the wedding… They might end up solving a murder”
The most John Kane expected after giving lift to a stranger was a word of appreciation and a thank you. But the stranger ends up inviting John to a lavish wedding.

Audiobook Available for She Wore Mourning

One of my goals this year was to work on getting some more audio out. While I have a few audiobooks out, most of them are for stand alone books and YA, not on my longer mystery series, which is a poor marketing choice! Audio is expensive, so it can be tough to make your investment back if I don’t get many buyers. But I have some strategies in place and hope to be able to pump up audio this year.
So, I had already planned to get some audiobooks done when Anthony Shuck approached me and asked if I was interested in doing audiobooks for the Zachary Goldman Mysteries series. He attached an audition sample, and I really enjoyed his voice for Zachary.
Fast forward a few months, and She Wore Mourning is now available as an audiobook!

You can listen to a sample before purchasing. Audio is a great way to read while you are doing other things. Walking, running, washing the dishes, driving, whatever. I consume a lot of audiobooks.
You can buy the audiobook directly from me for $9.95, or check your favourite retailer to see if it is available there yet. It takes a little while to roll out distribution to all of the stores, but it is available on Kobo, Audible, and Amazon already.
By purchasing this audiobook, you will help to fund the next one in the series!
About the narrator:
A. J. Shuck is an Audiobook Narrator and Producer with 3 years of experience in Audiobooks and more than a decade of experience in stage acting and musical theatre. He fell in love with performing at the age of 13 when he premiered as Nerd #3 in a local production of High School Musical. He has a passion for books and reading especially YA Fiction and Mysteries. He believes strongly that the right words at the right time can change the world, certainly, they’ve changed his world. He is a proud member of the APA (Audio Publishers Association). He currently lives in Oklahoma City with the love of his life and their 3 beautiful daughters who have him wrapped around their little fingers.

Tracking a Killer in Blind Search

I hope you had a chance to pick up a copy of Time to Your Elf this weekend when it was on sale! Some of the other books that were on sale or free may still be, so take a look and see what looks like a good addition to your TBR list. You can still get the first book in the Reg Rawlins, Psychic Investigator series, What the Cat Knew, for free.
Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme. Read the rules and more teasers at The Purple Booker. Anyone can play along.
My current read is Blind Search, by Paula Munier, the second book in the Mercy Carr mystery series. It is set in Vermont and includes lots of description of local flora and fauna (though not in so much detail that you want to skip over it.) Mercy Carr, the main sleuth in the book, is ex-army and has an army-trained dog (Elvis) to help her out with her investigation. Her sidekick is a game warden and also has a dog (Susie-Bear) trained to track.
It has been quite an enjoyable read so far, I have enjoyed the interplay between the big humans, the dogs, and little Henry, an autistic boy traumatized by whatever he saw in the woods when the victim was murdered. I’m a sucker for dogs and kids!
“Run, Henry!” she whispered.
Paula Munier, Blind Search
Henry ran.
And he didn’t look back.

It’s October, hunting season in the Green Mountains—and the Vermont wilderness has never been more beautiful or more dangerous. Especially for nine-year-old Henry, who’s lost in the woods. Again. Only this time he sees something terrible. When a young woman is found shot through the heart with a fatal arrow, Mercy thinks that something is murder. But Henry, a math genius whose autism often silences him when he should speak up most, is not talking.
Now there’s a murderer hiding among the hunters in the forest—and Mercy and Elvis must team up with their crime-solving friends, game warden Troy Warner and search-and-rescue dog Susie Bear, to find the killer—before the killer finds Henry. When an early season blizzard hits the mountains, cutting them off from the rest of the world, the race is on to solve the crime, apprehend the murderer, and keep the boy safe until the snowplows get through.
Inspired by the true search-and-rescue case of an autistic boy who got lost in the Vermont wilderness, Paula Munier’s mystery is a compelling roller coaster ride through the worst of winter—and human nature.

Beware fair folk bearing gifts
Timing had never been Reg’s strong suit. It seemed like she was always arriving late or on the wrong day, starting a new venture at the worst possible time, or otherwise fouling things up. But her bad timing was nothing compared to that of Orri.
If you are going to take it upon yourself to be a harbinger, you should at least pick the right time to appear, right? But the guy can’t seem to get his facts right and Reg is losing patience.
But one warning will change everything.

If you enjoy well-written paranormal cozies with imaginative plots and engaging characters that you love to follow on their various adventures, you have found a perfect series worthy of your time and attention.
I love this series and cannot imagine how Ms Workman keeps thinking up such adventures, but am glad she does.

Self-taught in the arcane arts, hedgewitch Selena Marx is comfortable doing divination for West Los Angeles’ anxiety-ridden housewives, lawyers, and aspiring actresses. Her biggest challenge? Avoiding Lucien Dumond, leader of the Greater Los Angeles Necromancers’ Guild, who views her as fresh meat to add to his harem of slavishly devoted groupies.
Selena’s not interested in the slimy, celebrity-schmoozing sorcerer, but nobody turns Lucien down without consequences. When he threatens to fit her with magical cement shoes and drop her off the Santa Monica Pier, Selena’s Tarot cards point her to Globe, Arizona, for a new home, a new shop, and a cursed pet cat.
Just as she’s settling in and meeting the locals — including Calvin Standingbear, hunky chief of the San Ramon Apache tribal police — Lucien tracks her down…and promptly disappears. When his body turns up on tribal lands, it’s up to Calvin to investigate. Starting with Selena.
And when one of Lucien’s acolytes is killed, traces of dark magic and cryptic warnings from the spirits send Selena and Calvin in a race against time — before a too-close-for-comfort evil cuts her own life short.

Marie Fortune, 39, a successful dog groomer in Boston, has had enough of catering to the wealthy and their pampered dogs. Realizing it is time to make a change, she quits and heads to a small coastal town in Maine where she remembers fond summers as a kid. Marie expects to go for a brief getaway—and is shocked to learn that her great-aunt left her an inheritance: a dilapidated, historic house high up on a hill overlooking the harbor.
Marie feels an instant connection. Although the locals tell her it would be folly, Marie decides to renovate and give it a second life as a B&B.
But there is one thing she couldn’t have planned for: the house is haunted.
Two things, actually: her great-aunt also left her a dog—and he is far from a typical dog.
When an unexpected death occurs soon thereafter, solving the crime will be more than just a matter of curiosity for Marie—her very future may depend on it.

Strange things happen when the temps begin to rise . . .
People act differently. They tell peculiar stories, report bizarre sightings, and make puzzling claims. They say magic stirs beneath the surface, and nothing casts stronger spells than the summer heat. Accounts of seafaring ghouls, ancient merfolk, and lake dwelling creatures run rampant. If the stories are true, who will survive to tell the tale? The only way to find out is to dive in.
Full of entrancing urban legends, mystery, and madness, Under the Sea is the first installment of a new annual anthology series for lovers of fantasy and folklore. If you like supernatural suspense, gothic fairy tales, or old-school R.L. Stine, these short stories will keep you up reading past your bedtime!

It’s a school reunion to die for.
Welcome to St Winifred’s, a magic school with an unpopular headmaster who won’t survive the night.
With a storm raging over the choppy waters, and the Magick Squad too worried about Health & Safety to come out and investigate, it’s down to the guest of honour to investigate the murder.
Violet Warren has no idea that the evening is a celebration of her achievements. Not that it matters, since a dead body takes centre stage before she’s given her award.
She and Ellie Bean form an unlikely amateur sleuth duo, with three clues to help them solve the case… or not.
One of their fellow guests is a murderer, and it’s down to them to find out who in this closed room cozy mystery.

Trouble brews when a psychic enchantress shares her magic.
When the sorceress Jane Black offers spells, potions, and tarot card readings to the regular folk in her small town, she finds herself in a cauldron of hot water. Despite her good intentions, spells spiral out of control, potions backfire, and people turn against her.
As Jane’s problems multiply, a drool-worthy dragon enforcer, arrives on her doorstep and gives her an ultimatum. While the universe stacks impossible odds against her, a hot dragon breathes down her neck, and Vixen, her snarky familiar, harangues her every move, Jane refuses to give up. She’s determined to make things better for everyone, or die trying.

Suddenly the girls find themselves scrambling to find the real killer while they battle a crooked Sheriff, planted evidence, and a long list of suspects that all had a reason to want Prudence dead.

What is Behind Her Eyes

Bobby, the third book in the Breaking the Pattern series has been released! Whether you have enjoyed the first two books in the series or are reading it as a stand-alone, I hope you enjoy this story. Check out my blog post about Bobby and other YA books you may be interested in!
Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme. Read the rules and more teasers at The Purple Booker. Anyone can play along.
I have recently begun Behind Her Eyes, by Sarah Pinborough. This is a psychological suspense that has apparently come to Netflix, though I haven’t watched it. Pinborough weaves a complex web between three characters, David, his wife Adele, and his secretary Louise. There is definitely something wrong in David and Adele’s marriage, but Pinborough only hints at what is going on, and from the various reviews and descriptions of the plot, I can only get that what you think is going on is definitely not what’s really going on behind the scenes here.
The characters of Louise and Adele are well-developed, though David is a bit of a mystery so far, shown mostly in two dimensions. We know what the women are thinking (assuming that they aren’t both unreliable narrators. Adele certainly is.) But we don’t get to hear David’s viewpoint.
I am definitely invested in finding out what is really going on here. The reviews make a lot of promises!
He turns to face me then, and I can see a quiet loathing in his eyes and I bite back a sudden urge to cry. I think this emptiness is worse than his anger.
Sarah Pinborough, Behind Her Eyes

Louise is a single mom, a secretary, stuck in a modern-day rut. On a rare night out, she meets a man in a bar and sparks fly. Though he leaves after they kiss, she’s thrilled she finally connected with someone.
When Louise arrives at work on Monday, she meets her new boss, David. The man from the bar. The very married man from the bar…who says the kiss was a terrible mistake, but who still can’t keep his eyes off Louise.
And then Louise bumps into Adele, who’s new to town and in need of a friend. But she also just happens to be married to David. And if you think you know where this story is going, think again, because Behind Her Eyes is like no other book you’ve read before.
David and Adele look like the picture-perfect husband and wife. But then why is David so controlling? And why is Adele so scared of him?
As Louise is drawn into David and Adele’s orbit, she uncovers more puzzling questions than answers. The only thing that is crystal clear is that something in this marriage is very, very wrong. But Louise can’t guess how wrong—and how far a person might go to protect their marriage’s secrets.
In Behind Her Eyes, Sarah Pinborough has written a novel that takes the modern day love triangle and not only turns it on its head, but completely reinvents it in a way that will leave readers reeling.

Reading about Strong Women

March 8 is International Women’s Day. The theme for 2022 is “Break the Bias.” Since it can sometimes be hard to find books with strong female characters, I decide to make that the focus of my blog post today. I have a number of books and series with female characters. I have chosen to highlight these ones:
@media screen and (min-width:768px){.ugb-a3d1b9d .ugb-img{width:675px;height:auto !important}}Questing for a DreamNadie is a bright, caring teen growing up Manitoba Cree growing up in abject poverty. She tries to balance school attendance, caring for her younger cousin Luyu, and spending time with handsome, impish Mouse, her best friend and confidante. Together, they strive to find the path to happiness on the reservation.
But tragedy strikes and Nadie’s is devastated by Luyu’s accidental death. Unable to find comfort in Mouse’s arms or Grandfather’s traditional mourning rites, Nadie leaves the band and strikes off on her own, searching for meaning and a new life in the outside world.
Can Nadie find happiness and a place of her own in a foreign world where she is abused and discriminated against? Completely alone for the first time in her life, it is a challenge such as Nadie has never before faced.
“Easily one of the most thought-provoking and compelling reads of the year, Ms. Workman has written a masterful contemporary account of one native teen’s journey from home and the possibilities for hope even for those drowning in poverty, prejudice, and addiction. Examining hard concepts such as death, rape, abuse, neglect, addiction, and wounds passed down from generation to generation, this story is full of raw emotion that will bring the reader to tears, yet unable to put the smoothly-paced story down. With true-to-life characters both good and bad, Nadie is inspirational. It isn’t because she’s perfect but rather because she is far from it and somehow manages to find the courage in the end to become someone who can help bring her tribe forward. A must-read tale for any book lover!“

Something just doesn’t add up.
Assistant Medical Examiner Kenzie Kirsch thinks that the deaths from Champlain House are linked by more than place. If she is right in her theory, the nursing homes, emergency rooms and the morgue are all going to be overwhelmed.
Only she can’t get anyone to listen to her. The suggestion of a public health hazard may cause widespread panic, and it is a really bad time politically to be spreading gossip about an unknown contagion.
The CDC needs proof.
And Kenzie Kirsch needs to be silenced.
One way or another. It’s kind of scary because it’s not hard to believe what happened in the book, could happen in the real world.
If you are a reader of the Zachary Goldman Mysteries series, you have already met Kenzie Kirsch. This series is a spinoff from Zachary Goldman Mysteries, giving Kenzie a front-and-center position in solving medical mysteries.

Gabriel has dealt with mysterious medical issues his whole life. Just when he finally thought that they had all of the answers and he was on the road to good health, he is apprehended by DFS on the grounds of medical neglect.
At first, he thought that he would be back home in a few days, once the misunderstanding was cleared up. But when Renata tells Gabriel her crazy conspiracy theories, Gabriel feels the first pangs of doubt. Is there really a conspiracy?
Will he ever be able to get well and go back to his mother, or is he doomed to be another guinea pig for Doctor De Klerk? The plot was FANTASTIC. I’ve read a lot of stories about foster children, but never anything quite like what happens in Mito. I never even realized that medical kidnap could very well be a thing happening “behind the scenes” in foster care, but after reading this book my mind is blown. I just. Wow. I don’t want to go into a whole lot of detail so I think I might stop this review here, but, gah. I can’t even form words I’m so freaking mind blown.
This book was amazing!!

Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed.
Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalil’s name. Some cops and the local drug lord try to intimidate Starr and her family. What everyone wants to know is: what really went down that night? And the only person alive who can answer that is Starr.
But what Starr does—or does not—say could upend her community. It could also endanger her life.

In 1915, Sherlock Holmes is retired and quietly engaged in the study of honeybees in Sussex when a young woman literally stumbles onto him on the Sussex Downs. Fifteen years old, gawky, egotistical, and recently orphaned, the young Mary Russell displays an intellect to impress even Sherlock Holmes.
Under his reluctant tutelage, this very modern, twentieth-century woman proves a deft protégée and a fitting partner for the Victorian detective. They are soon called to Wales to help Scotland Yard find the kidnapped daughter of an American senator, a case of international significance with clues that dip deep into Holmes’s past.

Discovered in the attic in which she spent the last years of her life, Anne Frank’s remarkable diary has since become a world classic—a powerful reminder of the horrors of war and an eloquent testament to the human spirit.
In 1942, with Nazis occupying Holland, a thirteen-year-old Jewish girl and her family fled their home in Amsterdam and went into hiding. For the next two years, until their whereabouts were betrayed to the Gestapo, they and another family lived cloistered in the “Secret Annex” of an old office building. Cut off from the outside world, they faced hunger, boredom, the constant cruelties of living in confined quarters, and the ever-present threat of discovery and death. In her diary Anne Frank recorded vivid impressions of her experiences during this period. By turns thoughtful, moving, and amusing, her account offers a fascinating commentary on human courage and frailty and a compelling self-portrait of a sensitive and spirited young woman whose promise was tragically cut short.
