What it is like to be A Stranger at Home

Looking for some books for Father’s Day? Books featuring strong father figures? Pop on over to my blog post for some of my books and some by other authors!

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme. Read the rules and more teasers at The Purple Booker. Anyone can play along.

June is National Indigenous History Month and June 21 is National Indigenous Peoples Day in Canada, so my reading app gave me some suggestions of books by Indigenous authors. I picked up a short book, A Stranger at Home, by Christy Jordan-Fenton and Margaret-Olemaun Pokiak-Fenton, about Margaret-Olemaun’s experience returning home from residential school. This is the sequel to Fatty Legs, her experience at residential school, but I have not read that one yet. I’ll probably pick it up later on this month.

This heartfelt account describes Fenton’s heartache at returning to her family unable to speak their language or eat their food anymore, her mother not recognizing her, and her younger siblings not old enough to remember her. She is shunned by some of those in her Inuvialuit community who see her as an outsider, and it takes quite a while for her to recover her native tongue. A quick read, and an important one if you want to learn more about Canada’s history.

A Stranger at Home is categorized as a children’s book, and it does not “talk down” to readers. It can certainly be enjoyed by readers of all ages.

I have previously reviewed From the Ashes, another book about the Canadian indigenous experience which is a much longer, more difficult read, but another that I would highly recommend.

Would you believe that at one point could scarcely remember my own name or even speak the same language as my
mother?

Christy Jordan-Fenton and Margaret-Olemaun Pokiak-Fenton, A Stranger at Home

Traveling to be reunited with her family in the arctic, 10-year-old Margaret Pokiak can hardly contain her excitement. It’s been two years since her parents delivered her to the school run by the dark-cloaked nuns and brothers.

Coming ashore, Margaret spots her family, but her mother barely recognizes her, screaming, “Not my girl.” Margaret realizes she is now marked as an outsider. And Margaret is an outsider: she has forgotten the language and stories of her people, and she can’t even stomach the food her mother prepares. However, Margaret gradually relearns her language and her family’s way of living. Along the way, she discovers how important it is to remain true to the ways of her people — and to herself.

Highlighted by archival photos and striking artwork, this first-person account of a young girl’s struggle to find her place will inspire young readers to ask what it means to belong.

Stories with Strong Fathers

Time for a Father’s Day blog post! It can be hard sometime to find representations of good fathers in literature. We have absent fathers, abusive fathers, and fathers who just drift in and out of the background. I confess that many of my characters have fathers who fall into these categories. They tend to come from traumatic backgrounds and/or families with secrets. But there are a few important exceptions.

Michah’s father in Virtually Harmless is very supportive and helpful, even if they do occasionally not see eye-to-eye. He is a retired cop, and is proud of her using her skills in law enforcement.

From award-winning and USA Today Bestselling Author, P.D. Workman

Micah lived a quiet, comfortable life, her involvement in law enforcement limited to the composite pictures that she produced with her computer and colored pencils.

But everything is turned upside down when she involves herself in the case of an infant found abandoned in the Sweetgrass Hills.

With the help of her knowledge of DNA and law enforcement contacts across the country, Micah is closing in on a killer. But her investigation draws the killer’s attention, and she finds herself in the middle of an operation that could mean the end of her career—or worse, her life.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ This cosy thriller with a neurodivergent, aro-ace MC will keep you turning the pages long after you should have logged into your day job. Oops.

Love CSI and other forensic mysteries? Award-winning and USA Today bestselling author brings you this fresh new nail-biter for your next read.

Join Micah as she picks up her pencils and starts on a new case.

“P. D. Workman has outdone herself with this riveting techno-thriller featuring Micah Miller, a forensic artist specializing in composite renderings based on forensic DNA phenotyping … This book offers plenty of thrills, chills, suspense and white-knuckled tension as the plot unfolds and it kept me turning pages until late into the night. The story is clean and well-written, the plot is fascinating, the pace is relentless and the characters are realistic and relatable. I highly recommend this absorbing and thoroughly enjoyable thriller to anyone who favors CSI, NCIS, Cold Case, Forensic Files or any high-tech inspired crime-solving theme.”

You may be surprised at my inclusion of one of the Zachary Goldman series in this list. If you have been reading the series, you know that Zachary’s parents were both very abusive and are not a part of his life. However, his former foster father, Lorne Peterson, and his partner Patrick Partner, have taken on father roles in Zachary’s life and are always there to provide whatever help he needs.

@media screen and (min-width:768px){.stk-8fd7e47{flex:1 1 calc(66.7% - var(--stk-column-gap,0px) * 1 / 2 ) !important}}His Hands Were Quiet

He’s better off dead anyway.

Hired to investigate the death of an autistic boy in a treatment facility, PI Zachary Goldman is concerned about the therapies he sees there. While he is assured that the children there are not actually being hurt, his investigation leads to the discovery of even deeper institutional abuses.

Battling the ghosts of his own past, Zachary fights to uncover the facility’s dark secrets and to get as many children as he can out of harm’s way.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ The way that PD Workman showed the autistic perspective in contrast to the mainstream views about us was lovely. I appreciated it more than I can express in words. She did thorough research on multiple sides of the issue and it shows. She gives multiple autistic perspectives, not just one, and the way they were presented brought me to tears multiple times … The story itself was a solid mystery with many exciting twists and turns along the way. Even if I wasn’t personally invested in the topic (being autistic myself and having autistic children), I still would’ve enjoyed it as a mystery. I’m extremely likely to pick up more of her books now that I’ve read this one!

Zachary Goldman, Private Investigator, is flawed with a capital F. Shattered by the tragedies of his own life, he will somehow still manage to pick himself up and dig just a little bit deeper than anyone else to find the vital clues.

Maybe being broken makes it easier for others who have faced tragedy to trust him. Walk with Zachary as he solves cases that will stretch his abilities to the limit.

Even with his own life in shambles, Zachary Goldman is still the one you want on the case.

Investigate this P.I. mystery now!

Easily one of the most thought-provoking and compelling reads of the year, Ms. Workman has written a masterful contemporary account of one native teen’s journey from home and the possibilities for hope even for those drowning in poverty, prejudice, and addiction … A must-read tale for any book lover!

And some more!

I have been reading through lists of books with strong father figures. Some of them, like mine, include father figures who are not the main character’s biological father or the father who raised them. The Harry Potter books are often referenced, with Mr. Weasley referenced. Harry also had several other father figures in his life as well.

Here are some more to consider:

Victor Hugo’s tale of injustice, heroism and love follows the fortunes of Jean Valjean, an escaped convict determined to put his criminal past behind him. But his attempts to become a respected member of the community are constantly put under threat: by his own conscience, and by the relentless investigations of the dogged policeman Javert. It is not simply for himself that Valjean must stay free, however, for he has sworn to protect the baby daughter of Fantine, driven to prostitution by poverty.

Looking for A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder?

Hope you had a chance to pick up A Fateful Plateful this weekend for just $0.99. Some of the other freebies and $0.99 deals included in my blog post might still be available if you are looking for some books to add to your TBR pile.

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme. Read the rules and more teasers at The Purple Booker. Anyone can play along.

I’m not sure of the title of this book, since it really doesn’t describe what the book is about or the tone of the piece. A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder by Holly Jackson features a young woman investigating the murder of another girl in her town five years earlier, becoming friends with the brother of the boy accused of murdering her and digging down deep to find the truth behind what really happened to Andie Bell.

It is billed as a YA Thriller and is apparently big on TikTok and Netflix and has won several children’s fiction awards. So far I am enjoying the gradual unravelling of what Andie Bell was really like and who may have had a motive to murder her. If she was murdered. Though she has been legally declared dead, no body has ever been found.

I don’t know for sure what the correct police procedure would have been but I’m guessing that at that point, Sal became the number-one suspect.

A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder, Holly Jackson

The case is closed. Five years ago, schoolgirl Andie Bell was murdered by Sal Singh. The police know he did it. Everyone in town knows he did it.

But having grown up in the same small town that was consumed by the crime, Pippa Fitz-Amobi isn’t so sure. When she chooses the case as the topic for her final project, she starts to uncover secrets that someone in town desperately wants to stay hidden. And if the real killer is still out there, how far will they go to keep Pip from the truth … ?

Running from a murderous vampire while on a business trip? I don’t think I packed the right shoes for this.

I’m done being a witch. My magical training has brought me nothing but failure. My spellcraft supply store was a flop, my pet bat puts a serious cramp in my dating style, and my social life’s a joke. It seems my peers would rather go out to brunch than help me add eye of newt to my cauldron.

It’s time for me to live a “normal” life—and what’s more normal than taking a job with a big company and going on a business trip?

I expect my days out west to include boring PR intern stuff: You know, meetings, phone calls, emails.

Not a gorgeous billionaire, a murder mystery…

and hand-to-hand combat with an outlaw vampire.

It looks like my magical training might just come in handy after all. It’s time to dust off my spellbook, call on old coven members, and yes, ask my feisty bat for some help. Desperate times call for desperate witches.

“You know your social life needs work when your first Saturday night out in months ends in murder.”

While at an Oxford art gallery, tearoom owner Gemma Rose overhears a sinister conversation minutes before a University student is fatally poisoned. Could there be a connection? And could her best friend’s suave new boyfriend have anything to do with the murder? Gemma decides to do some snooping, helped by the nosy “Old Biddies” from the local Cotswolds village. But sleuthing isn’t as simple as she’d imagined, particularly when she keeps bumping into her old college flame, now the CID detective in charge of the investigation. And with her mother causing havoc at her quaint English tearoom and her best friend furious with her suspicions, Gemma finds herself in a sticky spot…

The dead girl had no shortage of enemies and there are motives galore: was it the angry rival student desperate for revenge? Or the resentful employee with a bitter grudge? Or maybe even a sly ex-lover determined to end their affair once and for all? Gemma finds that this mystery is turning out to have more twists than a Chelsea bun. Too late, she realises that she could be the next item on the killer’s menu… or will her little tabby cat, Muesli, save the day?

A new twist in You Will Remember Me

May is National Share a Story month! There are so many great stories out there. Check out last week’s blog post for some great new (and old) stories to add to your pile!

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme. Read the rules and more teasers at The Purple Booker. Anyone can play along.

I am currently reading You Will Remember Me by Hannah Mary McKinnon. Who doesn’t love an amnesia thriller and the thrill of unwrapping one layer after another of the patient’s story to find out who they really are and how they came to be there. It goes without saying that there will be secrets, things that maybe even the sufferer does not want to remember. McKinnon does a masterful job of setting things up from the moment “Brad” wakes up on the beach with no memory of how he got there—or who he is. I am looking forward to finding out just what happened to bring him to that point.

“My name’s Brad.” I made it a statement this time, trying to convince myself with certainty. Now I had my name, I hoped other things would fall into place.

Hannah Mary McKinnon, You Will Remember Me

Forget the truth.
Remember the lies.

He wakes up on a deserted beach in Maryland with a gash on his head and wearing only swim trunks. He can’t remember who he is. Everything—his identity, his life, his loved ones—has been replaced by a dizzying fog of uncertainty. But returning to his Maine hometown in search of the truth uncovers more questions than answers.

Lily Reid thinks she knows her boyfriend, Jack. Until he goes missing one night, and her frantic search reveals that he’s been lying to her since they met, desperate to escape a dark past he’d purposely left behind.

Maya Scott has been trying to find her estranged stepbrother, Asher, since he disappeared without a trace. Having him back, missing memory and all, feels like a miracle. But with a mutual history full of devastating secrets, how far will Maya go to ensure she alone takes them to the grave?

Shared fates intertwine in a twisty, explosive novel of suspense, where unearthing the past might just mean being buried beneath it.

Share A Story! Myths Magic and Mayhem

May is National Share a Story month! There are so many great stories out there. When I was deciding what to do for my blog, I told the authors I was talking to that this year’s theme was Myths, Magic, and Mayhem. I just realized today… that was the 2021 theme. Oops. But I’m going to go with it! So here is a flashback to 2021.

Myths, Magic, and Mayhem

National Share a Story month is usually aimed toward children’s and young adult books, but grown-ups need stories too.

My magical series is Reg Rawlins, Psychic Investigator, and you can definitely get your fill of myths, magic, and mayhem here!

@media screen and (min-width:768px){.stk-8fd7e47{flex:1 1 calc(66.7% - var(--stk-column-gap,0px) * 1 / 2 ) !important}}Fairy Blade Unmade

Don’t take a pixie on a road trip.

Reg Rawlins is taking things one day at a time, which is the best way to approach life when your perception of reality has been shattered beyond recognition. Running her business, learning how to manage her new gifts, and trying to train a rambunctious kitten are about all she can manage.

She definitely doesn’t need to be dealing with a magically-injured fairy, an expedition to the Blue Ridge Mountains, or getting the cooperation of yet another magical species.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐Ms. Workman deftly creates tense and not-so tense situations, intriguing characters (both human and non-human), unforgettable adventures (reminiscent of epic fantasy), and does it all with a light touch of humor.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐You get your fill of witches, familiars, fairies, pixies, and dwarfs in a well developed, well-told story infused with just the right amount of humor and written well enough to start here even if you haven’t read any of the others

Like paranormal mysteries? Psychics, witches, fairies, and more! Award-winning and USA Today Bestselling Author P.D. Workman waves her wand to transport readers to the myth- and magic-filled small town of Black Sands for another paranormal cozy mystery to be solved by Reg Rawlins and her friends.

Reg Rawlins, professional con, has really gotten herself into a bind this time.

The fortune teller gig started as a scam, but she suddenly finds herself tangled up in the case of Warren Blake, a man who she thought was dead. It turns out he may still be alive, but in mortal peril.

Reg has always taken the quick exit, the easy way out, but running out on this racket might mean someone else’s death.

Staying in it might mean hers.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ It sounds like a fairly gentle story, but there is a lot of suspense involved. Add a bunch of humor to the mix and you are in for a treat … This is a story that you don’t want to put down.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ This book has all my favourite things: heart, great writing, nearly-flawless editing, something unusual in the air, and a cat.

When I think about magic, myth, and mayhem, I think of Percy Jackson!

Twelve-year-old Percy Jackson is about to be kicked out of boarding school…again. No matter how hard he tries, he can’t seem to stay out of trouble. But can he really be expected to stand by and watch while a bully picks on his scrawny best friend? Or not defend himself against his pre-algebra teacher when she turns into a monster and tries to kill him? Of course, no one believes Percy about the monster incident; he’s not even sure he believes himself.

Until the Minotaur chases him to summer camp.

Suddenly, mythical creatures seem to be walking straight out of the pages of Percy’s Greek mythology textbook and into his life. The gods of Mount Olympus, he’s coming to realize, are very much alive in the 21st-century. And worse, he’s angered a few of them: Zeus’s master lightning bolt has been stolen, and Percy is the prime suspect.

Now Percy has just 10 days to find and return Zeus’s stolen property, and bring peace to a warring Mount Olympus. On a daring road trip from their summer camp in New York to the gates of the Underworld in Los Angeles, Percy and his friends, one a satyr and the other the demigod daughter of Athena, will face a host of enemies determined to stop them. To succeed in his quest, Percy will have to do more than catch the true thief: he must come to terms with the father who abandoned him; solve the riddle of the Oracle, which warns him of failure and betrayal by a friend; and unravel a treachery more powerful than the gods themselves.

Another favourite book about magic!

Turning the envelope over, his hand trembling, Harry saw a purple wax seal bearing a coat of arms; a lion, an eagle, a badger and a snake surrounding a large letter ‘H’.

Harry Potter has never even heard of Hogwarts when the letters start dropping on the doormat at number four, Privet Drive. Addressed in green ink on yellowish parchment with a purple seal, they are swiftly confiscated by his grisly aunt and uncle.

Then, on Harry’s eleventh birthday, a great beetle-eyed giant of a man called Rubeus Hagrid bursts in with some astonishing news: Harry Potter is a wizard, and he has a place at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. An incredible adventure is about to begin!

From USA Today Bestselling Author, P.D. Workman!

There’s a new witch in town

And a powerful one at that. Reg doesn’t know what Verity is doing in Black Sands, but she is getting too close to Corvin Hunter for her own safety.

Reg was just trying to help. To be a good neighbor.

But things quickly spiral out of control, leaving Reg fighting for her life.

She knew being close to Corvin was a dangerous proposition, but she had never foreseen things ending this way.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ P.D. Workman’s witchy writing carries you through a world that can make you stop and wander. Could something like this really happen? Could it be possible? You sure wish it could be. Even the smile you have at the end says this might just be the beginning of a magical new life.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ This book has all my favourite things: heart, great writing, nearly-flawless editing, something unusual in the air, and a cat.

A self-professed con artist practicing as a contact to the dead, a drop-dead gorgeous warlock, and a psychic cat—what could go wrong?

Fall under Reg’s spell today.

—Another great work of art by Ms. Workman. I am amazed at the diversity of her writing and how much I really enjoy them all. She can write cozy mystery, YA books that should be read by all, medical thrillers, Zach Goldman series and now a paranormal series. I am so glad to have found this author. I am honored that I get to read them early also.

—This book has all my favourite things: heart, great writing, nearly-flawless editing, something unusual in the air, and a cat. I needed a light read, and this fit the bill perfectly. Recommended.

—This book actually surprised me. I knew that a psychic cat would be entertaining. I just didn’t expect it to be this good. You really do get wrapped up in the people and story. It sounds like a fairly gentle story, but there is a lot of suspense involved. Add a bunch of humor to the mix and you are in for a treat. I love the characters. Wish I had some friends like them. And the cat is so very well done. Acts like a typical cat, but a lot smarter than his human. This is a story that you don’t want to put down.

—Extremely well written as are all of P.D. Workman’s books, the characters well developed. I’m a character reader, I get into the characters. Who and what they are. Why they do the things they do. The things that make a reader get invested into the characters and thereby the book. I look forward to P.D. Workman’s next book.

—P D Workman has done it again; created a cast of characters and a storyline that are captivating and enthralling. Once I started this cozy I didn’t want to put it down (which can be a bad thing when you have a family to take care of…lol). I can’t wait for the other books in this series. I think Reg is going to turn out to be one of my favorite new characters. Pick up your copy as soon as possible.

“Every single one of [P.D. Workman’s] books has spoken to me in ways no one or almost anything else has. And I have found strength in the books I’ve read.”

“The way that P.D. Workman writes just flows amazingly and allows the reader to get really invested in a book.”

“This is one author I certainly will be looking out for, I can’t recommend her enough.”

“I’ll read anything by P. D. Workman that I can get my hands on.”

“Every book by PD Workman that I’ve read has been a gripping one, however different the genres are, going from lighter mysteries to really dark ones… this is one of my favourite, most dependable authors.”

“P.D. Workman is an incredibly versatile writer. No matter which of her books I read I am drawn into a great story and honestly, I don’t think I’ve followed another author that could go from cozy mystery to YA to a PI series dealing with mental health issues. Really enjoy her books!”

“[P.D. Workman’s] stories are so believable and you can’t help but feel like you know these people. You find yourself crying, laughing and feeling the characters emotions. Now if an author can make you cry and feel every emotion in a story, she is one hell of an author.”

Let this book take you Hostage

In case you missed it, I have just released A Fateful Plateful, book #16 in the Auntie Clem’s Bakery culinary cozy mystery series. It can be read as a stand alone mystery, or together with the rest of the series for even more enjoyment. You can start the journey with book #1, Gluten-Free Murder.

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme. Read the rules and more teasers at The Purple Booker. Anyone can play along.

This week I am reading Hostage, a novel by Clare Mackintosh. Lots of interesting characters with different backgrounds and secrets, a young daughter on the ground in peril and hundreds of people up in the sky at the mercy of a hostage taker. The tension is building… it will be interesting to see how the main character, a flight attendant, manages to take control of the situation and—presumably—land the airplane!

I leave a note on Sophia’s bed—a felt-tip heart with love from Mummy underneath, something I’ve done every time I fly, ever since she learned to read.

Clare Mackintosh, Hostage

You can save hundreds of lives. Or the one that matters most…

From New York Times bestselling author Clare Mackintosh comes a claustrophobic thriller set over 20 hours on-board the inaugural nonstop flight from London to Sydney.

Mina is trying to focus on her job as a flight attendant, not the problems with her five-year-old daughter back home, or the fissures in her marriage. But the plane has barely taken off when Mina receives a chilling note from an anonymous passenger, someone intent on ensuring the plane never reaches its destination: “The following instructions will save your daughter’s life…”

Someone needs Mina’s assistance and knows exactly how to make her comply.

When one passenger is killed and then another, Mina knows she must act. But which lives does she save: Her passengers…or her own daughter and husband who are in grave distress back at home?

It’s twenty hours to landing. A lot can happen in twenty hours.
