Learn about The Other People

Halloween is coming! Have a look at my Halloween bundles in my post Grab a Bookish Treat. Buy a bundle and save!

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme. Read the rules and more teasers at The Purple Booker. Anyone can play along.

I am nearly finished The Other People by C.J. Tudor, and it has been an interesting journey! A well-built psychological mystery, with a bit of the supernatural thrown in, you’re never quite sure what is real and how much can be explained logically. And how much is just inexplicable. The characters are well-developed and will certainly pull you into the story. You won’t want to put it down until all of your questions have been answered. But I can’t guarantee that they all will be!

“You need to come home, Mr. Forman. Right away.”

C.J. Tudor, The Other People

Three years ago, Gabe’s family disappeared. Most people think they died. Some of them blame Gabe. Hardly anyone believes the truth–that Gabe saw his daughter the day she and his wife disappeared, smiling at him from the back of a rusty old car speeding down the highway. So even though it’s been three years since that day, Gabe cannot give up hope. Even though he has given up everything else. His home, his job, his old life. He spends his days travelling up and down the highway and sleeping in service stations, searching for the car that took her.

It’s hard for most people to understand. But Gabe has found some who do in an online group set up by people who have also lost loved ones–who have suffered like him. They call themselves “The Other People.” Because isn’t that what everyone thinks: bad stuff only happens to “other people.”

When the car that Gabe saw driving away that night is found in a lake with a body inside, Gabe is suddenly under suspicion–and in danger. In desperation, he turns to The Other People for help. Because they are good people. They know what loss is like. They know what pain is like. They know what death is like. There’s just one problem . . . they want other people to know it too.

Lottie Lemon has a brand new bakery to tend to, a budding romance with perhaps one too many suitors, and she has the supernatural ability to see the dead—which are always harbingers for ominous things to come. A look back at the future in Click Here for Murder

October is my bookiversary! Hop over to my blog post for some good deals and a summary of the different series that I have on the go. If you have only read one or two series or haven’t yet ventured into any of them, now is a great time to start!

Also Halloween is coming soon, and I will have some great Halloween deals for you later on in the week. Be sure to check back!

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme. Read the rules and more teasers at The Purple Booker. Anyone can play along.

Click Here for Murder by Donna Andrews has been a fun and clever read so far. The main narrator (it has multiple points of view) is an AI personality that has gained sentience. I have not read book one in the Turing Hopper series, but there is enough backstory for me to understand the main points of what has happened prior to this story. I have read some of Donna Andrews’ Meg Langslow series, which is quite good.

Click Here for Murder was published in 2003 and is set sometime in an imagined future where AI Personalities are used. Since it was written before 2002, the technology discussed is either obsolete now (cell phones without cameras, lower resolution first person multiplayer games (because high res would take too long to download, etc.) or have never come to fruition (the ability to examine a computer hard drive at the molecular level to see everything that was ever written to it even if it was overwritten, sentient technology, etc.)) It is interesting to look at how AI technology is used now versus how Andrews imagined it might be.

One way or another, he’d find out Monday.

Donna Andrews, Click Here for Murder

When her human colleague, Ray Santiago, is found murdered, Turing Hopper, an Artificial Intelligence Personality and ingenious sleuth, joins her human assistants, Maude and Tim, on a search for the killer and turns up dark secrets from Ray’s past that could threaten them all. By the author of You’ve Got Murder.

Guest Post: Have You Met Anastasia?

Lois Winston has joined me to tell you about her Anastasia Pollack series:

Crafts and murder don’t normally go hand-in-hand, but normal deserted magazine crafts editor Anastasia Pollack’s world the day her husband permanently cashed in his chips in Las Vegas and her comfortable middle-class life crapped out. Anastasia knew nothing of her husband’s gambling addiction. Now she’s dealing with debt greater than the GNP of Uzbekistan. She’s also stuck with Lucille, her semi-invalid Communist mother-in-law and leader of the octogenarian Daughters of the October Revolution.

Lucille is forced to share a bedroom with Anastasia’s mother Flora, a much-married, self-proclaimed descendant of Russian nobility and member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. The remainder of the occupants vying for space within Anastasia’s cramped suburban New Jersey home include her two teenage sons Alex and Nick, not named for Russian czars, although Lucille believes otherwise; Catherine the Great, her mother’s white Persian cat; Manifesto, her mother-in-law’s French bulldog; and Ralph, the Shakespeare-quoting parrot.

In Assault with a Deadly Glue Gun, the first book in the series,Anastasia returns to work after her husband’s death and discovers the body of the magazine’s fashion editor glued to her office chair. When evidence surfaces of an illicit affair between her and Anastasia’s husband, Anastasia becomes the prime suspect. Suddenly she’s not only dealing with her husband’s loan shark, but she’s also thrust into the role of reluctant amateur sleuth to clear her name.

In each book in the series, now at eleven novels and three novellas, Anastasia takes on various moonlighting jobs to pay down her debt, only to find herself constantly tripping over dead bodies, forcing her to continue sleuthing.

The latest book in the series is Guilty as Framed, which incorporates a real-life cold case into the plot.

An Anastasia Pollack Crafting Mystery, Book 11

When an elderly man shows up at the home of reluctant amateur sleuth Anastasia Pollack, she’s drawn into the unsolved mystery of the greatest art heist in history.

Boston mob boss Cormac Murphy has recently been released from prison. He doesn’t believe Anastasia’s assertion that the man he’s looking for doesn’t live at her address and attempts to muscle his way into her home. His efforts are thwarted by Anastasia’s fiancé Zack Barnes.

A week later, a stolen SUV containing a dead body appears in Anastasia’s driveway. Anastasia believes Murphy is sending her a message. It’s only the first in a series of alarming incidents, including a mugging, a break-in, another murder, and the discovery of a cache of jewelry and an etching from the largest museum burglary in history.

But will Anastasia solve the mystery behind these shocking events before she falls victim to a couple of desperate thugs who will stop at nothing to get what they want?

October is my Bookiversary

Yes, we are coming up on the anniversary of the release of the first book I published, Looking Over Your Shoulder. Nine years ago, I waded into the independent publishing waters and launched the first of many (currently 88 released) books. It has been an interesting journey and I have learned a lot!

I thought I would feature my various series here today. If you’ve only tried one or two, maybe you would like to explore a new series. But first, I hear you asking where are the deals to mark this special occasion? So here are a couple of sales that I have running right now.

I sure would love to see this book as a movie. Her stories are so believable and you can’t help but feel like you know these people. You find your self crying, laughing and feeling the characters emotions. Now if an author can make you cry and feel every emotion in a story, she is one hell of an author.

Detective “Parks Pat” Patenaude is called to an idyllic scene in the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary. Where the scene is marred only by the body of a man who apparently got in the way of beaver construction.

Yet that does not appear to be the case this time, and Parks Pat is on the case, hoping to uncover the truth in this unexpected death.

An accidental death like the one in Nose Hill Park is always tragic, but what can a homicide detective be expected to do about it?

Detective Margie “Parks Pat” Patenaude is called to the gruesome scene, and despite what she can see with her own eyes, does not believe that this is an open-and-shut case of the victim being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

The more questions Margie asks, the stranger the case seems. What started off as a tragic accident turns out to be something much more.

Sometimes, a cop just has to follow her instinct.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ This is another well-written, briskly-paced mystery featuring great characters, lots of interesting glimpses into Canada’s Indigenous culture, and a satisfying resolution all wrapped up in delightful quick-read police procedural by an author who could make a description of drying paint sound fascinating.

The writing is excellent, the plot is nice and twisty and the the characters and situations are believable. I enjoyed this book and am looking forward to seeing where she takes these new characters.
—Sandy, Goodreads

I am enjoying this new series. The first book was good and this one was even better. Love the characters and the storyline. Can’t wait to read book number three in this series.
—Kandy, Goodreads

I feel like I’m visiting Calgary, Canada and the parks where the murders are taking place in all three books so far. There are vivid descriptions of the park and the wetlands. Margie and her family are woven throughout along with their ancestry which adds a nice touch.
—Joanne, Goodreads

I love these stories. Short, exciting and not really predictable, as many short stories are. Plots are well-developed, characters are interesting, and there’s plenty of local lore and history.

Checking out a new series with Gone

Even though National Ice Cream Cone Day is over, I don’t see why you can’t still celebrate it with a cone and one of these cold cases! Check out my blog post for some fun mystery reads.

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme. Read the rules and more teasers at The Purple Booker. Anyone can play along.

I am just finishing up Randall Wayne White’s Gone, the first book in his new Hannah Smith series. This is a difficult one for me to review. Although I am all for books that expose trafficking and predatory practices to the light of day and inform people in an entertaining way, I had difficulty with the characters in this first in series. Randall Wayne White’s Doc Ford series is quite popular and well-reviewed, but I think writing a woman from first person point of view was difficult for this author. Even positive reviews frequently mention the difficulty White seems to have writing from a female perspective. I am not a fan of the “beautiful swan who doesn’t know she’s no longer an ugly duckling” trope. Nor of the woman standing in front of the mirror analyzing her assets. White seems to have wanted to include LGBT diversity to his cast of characters, but they don’t come out feeling genuine, just sexually confused.

Gone is suspenseful, a satisfying PI mystery, and has a good climax in the swamp at the end. The plot and storyline are good. Lots of details about boats and the Florida keys. But I think the author “missed the boat” on characterization in this one.

Some people are like that. Unaware of their vulnerability, secure in their own illusions.

Randall Wayne White, Gone

Hannah Smith is a tall, strong, formidable Florida woman, the descendant of generations of strong Florida women. She makes her living as a fishing guide, but her friends, neighbors, and clients also know her as an uncommonly resourceful woman with a keen sense of justice, as someone who can’t be bullied—and they have taken to coming to her with their problems.

Her methods can be unorthodox, though, and those on the receiving end of them often wind up very unhappy—and sometimes very violent. When a girl goes missing, and Hannah is asked to find her, that is exactly what happens…

A case as cold as ice cream

September 22 is National Ice Cream Cone Day, and I thought it would be a great day to feature mysteries with cold cases.

Here are a couple of mine you might be interested in:

A cold case for Erin!

The trouble with solving murders in a little town like Bald Eagle Falls is that everybody knows about it, and then they expect you to solve their cases too. When Bella brings a new—or rather a cold—case to Erin, she protests that she is not a detective. But Bella really needs her; how could an old woman just have gone missing without anyone following up on it? How could they just accept Ezekiel’s assertion that his wife was fine and she was just off visiting. Eventually, that excuse must have worn out.

Meanwhile, a blast from Erin’s own past—a foster sister Erin would rather not see again—shows up, bringing with her another set of complications.

Like baking mysteries? Cats, dogs, and other pets? Award-winning and USA Today Bestselling Author P.D. Workman brings readers back to small town Bald Eagle Falls for another culinary cozy mystery to be solved by gluten-free baker Erin Price and her friends.

Have your gluten-free cake and eat it too. Sink your teeth into this sweet treat now!

Then he was gone

Zachary Goldman just wants to put everything that happened to him that night at the hands of a monster behind him forever. But when Heather, his estranged sister, asks for his help in bringing her own rapist to justice, there is no way he can turn her down.

The case is cold, three decades ago. Heather never saw her attacker’s face, as he was wearing a mask. At the time, the police did everything they could, but there have been new advancements in technology and Zachary hopes to turn up something he can use to solve the case.

Somehow, he needs to find a way to finally bring Heather some peace, even when it means dealing with his own painful memories.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ This is a compelling story of family misfortune, child abuse and neglect, and of the inadequacies and challenges of the foster care system. Zachary’s devotion to a sister who, in truth, is nearly a stranger to him is inspiring. His dogged determination and unrelenting resolve to help another individual, regardless of his own problems or limitations, make him a remarkable and uniquely appealing character. The engaging characters, the intricately detailed storylines involving relevant and provocative issues, and the beautifully crafted flow of narrative make the stories in this series enthralling, entertaining, and completely addictive. I am eagerly looking forward to the next one.

Zachary Goldman, Private Investigator, is flawed with a capital F. Shattered by the tragedies of his own life, he will somehow still manage to pick himself up and dig just a little bit deeper than anyone else to find the vital clues.

Maybe being broken makes it easier for others who have faced tragedy to trust him. Walk with Zachary as he solves cases that will stretch his abilities to the limit.

Even with his own life in shambles, Zachary Goldman is still the one you want on the case.

Investigate this P.I. mystery now!

Six-foot-tall, redheaded ex-cop and Boston-based private eye Carlotta Carlyle is “the genuine article: a straightforward, funny, thoroughly American mystery heroine” (New York Post).

Thea Janis was a literary Mozart. She published her first novel at age fourteen, shocking the upper crust of Boston with her frank depiction of blue-blooded indiscretions, and she seemed to have a magnificent career ahead of her. But before Thea could publish her follow-up novel, she mysteriously disappeared and was eventually named as a victim of a serial killer.

Twenty-four years later, an admirer of Thea’s comes to Carlotta claiming to have evidence that Thea is alive—and still writing. He begs Carlotta to find the onetime prodigy, but there are powerful people, including Thea’s prominent family of Boston politicians, who want Thea’s second book to stay buried. As a take-no-prisoners gubernatorial race speeds to its climax, Carlotta discovers a secret that could upend the campaign, endanger people’s lives, and rewrite literary history.

Elizabeth Cubbon, Bessie to her friends, finds the new case frustrating. As if that weren’t enough to worry about, her friend Maggie Shimmin is convinced that someone is trying to kill her. Maggie knows exactly who is behind what she insists are attempts on her life, but Bessie isn’t anywhere near as certain.

Can Bessie and the cold case unit find Craig’s killer? Can Bessie convince Maggie to go to the police with her suspicions? And, after eight months of working together, can Bessie and her friends actually start to get to know Charles and Harry, the other two members of the unit?
