Flawed and Fascinating Figures in A Good Mother

A Good Mother is an exciting legal thriller by a new-to-me author, Lara Bazelon. I checked to see if I had read anything by her before or if it was the second book in a series (as there is a lot of backstory that seems to suggest it is at least the second book in a series) but I see it is listed as “A Library Journal Best Debut Novel of Spring and Summer 2021,” so if the author has written about the characters previously, she has not published any of that previous work.

A Good Mother follows Abby Rosenburg, a lawyer who has used questionable means to get what she wants, and co-counsel Will Ellet, a naive and idealistic ex-JAG lawyer taking on his first criminal trial. Their client is nineteen-year-old Luz Rivera Hollis, on trial for the brutal murder of her husband.

The story is full of drama, as Abby and Will navigate the legal system while trying to uncover Luz’s version of what happened that night. Luz refuses to accept a plea deal that would separate her from her newborn daughter for ten years, so Abby and Will must find a way to prove her innocence in court. This promises an intense battle between experienced lawyers and the justice system.

The main characters are interesting; flawed and not very sympathetic. Abby has previously used questionable means to get the evidence or results that she wants, is an alcoholic, and can’t stand being home with her newborn instead of in a courtroom. She doesn’t blanch at blackmail, hit and run, or lying to the judge. Her co-counsel on the case, Will Ellet is naive and idealistic, with traditional values that put him at odds with both Abby and Luz.

I’m looking forward to seeing how this story unfolds and what legal strategies Bazelon has come up with in order to help Luz prove her innocence. If you’re a fan of legal thrillers, A Good Mother is definitely worth checking out!*

Welcome to the world of accessible books! Are you you are a reader with a disability, or someone who is looking for a way to make books more accessible for your loved ones? I have been working behind the scenes on a new product that will make my books more accessible for the print disabled (low vision, reading disabled, or others). The result is: Accessibility Packs.

What is an Accessibility Pack?

An Accessibility Pack contains:

Audiobooks allow readers to listen to a book rather than or simultaneously with reading the eBook or PDF file. They are also helpful if you are someone who needs to move around while learning.

Standard audiobooks are expensive to produce. There is nothing like a voice actor narrating a book. He can add nuance and humour and many other benefits to the audiobook. I still want to produce more human narrated audiobooks. However, in order to bring more of my catalog to you in audio form, I am using text-to-speech, computer-narration technology. This allows me to reach more readers who need assistance with reading. While auto-narration is improving, these audiobooks do sound robotic and do not contain the nuance of human voice narration. Some readers will find this too distracting, but for others, it is just the tool they need to help them enjoy more books.

When?

I am working on putting these packages together now, but with over 90 books in my catalogue, you will not be able to get everything immediately. You can get an accessibility pack for the last three books in the Reg Rawlins series, and I am working on the Between the Cracks series right now. Then I will probably move onto the Kenzie Kirsch Series, and Parks Pat.

I am currently reading Before She Was Helen, by Caroline B. Cooney. It is an interesting story! It sounds like a cozy mystery set in a retirement community, with the protagonist stumbling over the body of her neighbor by chance. But this is not your standard cozy mystery. I would not even class it as a cozy, even though the storyline sounds like one. It borders on psychological suspense with the main character’s back history taking center stage and the murder takes a backseat.

The fascinating protagonist, Helen, is unlike any female sleuth readers have seen before. Not even your usual senior sleuth. She has a plethora of secrets that are slowly revealed as the story progresses. Caroline B. Cooney does an excellent job at uncovering her secrets like peeling layers away from an onion.

Reluctantly, Clemmie inserted the key into Dom Spesante’s front door. Don’t be dead, she warned Dom silently.

The Reality of Growing Up With OCD in OCDaniel

With Valentine’s Day quickly approaching, it can be challenging to come up with the perfect gift to show your friends how much you care. Gift-giving can be even harder for friends than for partners, as you want something special that won’t break the bank. Check out last week’s blog post for some ideas.

This week’s post is for OCDaniel by Wesley King. Yay for YA books exploring mental illnesses like OCD. King has mirrored his own childhood/teenage experience of growing up with OCD without understanding what it was, keeping it hidden from everyone including his parents. Main character Daniel comes to understand OCD through his friend and a book that she gives him, and gradually comes to accept who he is and that this is something he can share with his family and get their help and support.

King throws in a few subplots as well—Daniel’s part in the school football team playoffs, the two girls he is interested in, and an investigation into the possible murder of his friend’s father, all popular tropes in YA literature.

Summary

Daniel is the back-up punter for the Erie Hills Elephants. Which really means he’s the water boy. He spends football practice perfectly arranging water cups—and hoping no one notices. He hopes no one notices that he’s crazy, especially his best friend Max, and Raya, the prettiest girl in school. His life gets weirder when another girl at school, who is unkindly nicknamed Psycho Sara, notices him for the first time. She doesn’t just notice him: she seems to peer through him.

Dangerous Discoveries in Martha’s Vineyard

I started with my Valentine’s Day blogs and offerings last week. Check out my post on celebrating Valentine’s Day with your furry friend! End the day with a cozy mystery featuring your favourite four-legged characters.

Deadly Nightshade is part of Cynthia Riggs’s Martha’s Vineyard Mysteries series. I haven’t read any of her books before. With an eye for detail, Cynthia Riggs paints a vivid picture of the harbor and its boats while unfolding the investigation. I love protagonist Victoria Trumbull, who is 92 years old, but still very spry and active, a poet, and a fixture on the island with a long memory of its history. She overhears a murder and is one of the parties who finds the body. As Victoria dives deeper into the mystery, she uncovers a web of secrets and lies that could be more dangerous than she imagined.

The scream jolted her out of her reverie.

Cynthia Riggs, Deadly Nightshade

Summary

Victoria Trumbull has lived most of her 92 years on the Island. Like other Islanders, she knows the sound of the sea in calm and stormy weather – and she knows the sounds that do not belong. One evening while Victoria waits on the dock for her granddaughter to return with the harbormaster, she hears a chilling scream followed by a splash and the sound of tires skidding on sand. She investigates and discovers a mutilated body floating on the outgoing tide.

With her granddaughter, Domingo the harbormaster, a swarm of Island characters, and a few mysterious visitors, Victoria manages to get in a good bit of detective work. However, she isn’t able to prevent further homicide. As the tension mounts, Victoria concocts a scheme to reveal the killer and still has time to prepare her traditional Saturday night supper of Boston baked beans.

While the summer visitors bask on the beach, sail Island waters, shop in the Island stores, the reader is treated to the magic, the history and the texture of “the Vineyard” with its year-round characters real enough to include the reader in their conversations.

Celebrate Valentine’s Day With Your Furriest Friend

I don’t go all-out for romantic love in my Valentine’s Day postings. That’s just not my wheelhouse. You can find a few of my previous Valentine’s Day posts here:

As you can see from the title of this post, I thought that Valentine’s Day with your pets would make a great Valentine’s Day blog.

Of course you love your critters all year around, but Valentine’s Day is the purr-fect time to show your pet some extra love. Whether you have a dog, cat, or another type of furry (or feathery… or scaly) friend – Valentine’s Day is a great opportunity to show them how much they mean to you.

Pets make the BEST Valentines

Why do pets make the best Valentines?

Pets are loyal and loving companions who are always there for us.They are great listeners and never judge. (Well, okay, sometimes cats are pretty judgmental, but it’s not just you…)It has been proven that pets lower stress levels, even in those battling PTSDPets bring us joy, comfort, and companionship – all things that make them great Valentines!Celebrating Valentine’s Day with your pet:

They bring joy to us all year, so how can we make the day extra-special for our pets?

Take your dog for an extra long walk or a run in the park. For other animals, think out-of-the-box ways to exercise or have fun. Chasing a tinfoil ball or bag tie? A run around the room in an exercise ball?

Buy a special toy or treat for the big day. Even the box, ribbon, or wrapping paper can provide hours of fun. Maybe eliminate the toy altogether and just go for the box!

Give them extra cuddles and belly rubs throughout the day.

How about that special meal? Fido and Felix may not be up for candles (maybe try those little electric tea lights) but they probably wouldn’t turn down homemade chicken broth, salmon treats, or some other favorite meal they don’t get very often. Valentine’s Day is a special occasion! Share a treat!

Doggie playdate? Cats may not be interested in visitors on Valentine’s Day, but if your pooch enjoys socializing with another dog, why not set up a special playdate?

And when all of that is done, and they have curled up to go to sleep, that gives you time to…

Cracking the Case in a Captivating Stephanie Plum Mystery

Stalking is a serious issue that can have long-lasting mental health impacts. Last week’s blog post discussed how to cope with the trauma of being stalked, as well as providing tips on how to raise awareness of the issue in your local area by organizing a book club event.

Reading one of Janet Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum novels is like going home. Comforting and familiar and full of humor. In Game On, Stephanie as after a computer hacker turned murderer. The mysterious Diesel has also returned for this installment, also after the same fugitive. Lula is going through a bout of bad luck in this book, and it seems like she can’t do anything right. Mix a mooner and a duck-roaster into the mix, and hilarity ensues.

He’s also a psychopath who feeds on suffering and chaos when his hacking projects get boring.

Janet Evanovich, Game On

Summary

When Stephanie Plum is woken up in the middle of the night by the sound of footsteps in her apartment, she wishes she didn’t keep her gun in the cookie jar in her kitchen. And when she finds out the intruder is fellow apprehension agent Diesel, six feet of hard muscle and bad attitude whom she hasn’t seen in more than two years, she still thinks the gun might come in handy.

Turns out Diesel and Stephanie are on the trail of the same fugitive: Oswald Wednesday, an international computer hacker as brilliant as he is ruthless.
