Getting old shouldn’t be a death sentence
Kenzie thought she had a pretty good understanding of aging and elder care. She was a medical professional, after all. But when her postmortem findings cause her to look more deeply into the sometimes dark world of elder care, she is forced to reconsider.
When she starts asking questions about legislation and regulation, things get nasty.
Kenzie could just do what she’s told and stop asking questions.
But when was the last time she did that?

I highly recommend this riveting thriller to anyone who enjoys well-edited, carefully researched stories featuring relatable and interesting characters. I am looking forward to the next-in-series.

Well written book with great characters, as always, and this time with very interesting topics that concern every one of us. The author manages to illuminate several problems from different sides like in a master’s thesis, but everything is wrapped into an entertaining story. Excellent!

Another outstanding story.

Sure, it could just be the ramblings of a woman on too much morphine, or she could be talking about the missing anti‑aircraft weapons he read about and a highly sought-after terrorist.

Peter Levinson is disturbed. He’s not sleeping at night. He’s going out at all hours. He’s visibly distressed.
Levinson, it turns out, has reasons to be distressed. An old friend, lawyer Richie Capaldi, has suffered a traumatic brain injury. Two other old friends have vanished…and then Peter Levinson is given an ultimatum by mobster Leo Berlusconi to pay back money that Berlusconi claims Levinson owes him.
Lew Barent and Harry Moran are investigating the assault on Richie Capaldi and Kurtz has information that might help them solve the case.
Kurtz is not a cop, as his cop friends keep reminding him, and he has no desire to interfere with a police investigation, but Kurtz has never run from a fight, and when the threats against Peter Levinson escalate, Kurtz, Barent and Moran find themselves embroiled in a conspiracy involving prostitution, fraud, blackmail and long-simmering revenge.

Booked to Die: A Page-Turner with a Unique Twist

Last week was Living Donor Day! Find out more about organ donation in last week’s blog post and Unlawful Harvest, the first book in the Kenzie Kirsch Medical Thriller series.
Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme. Read the rules and more teasers at The Purple Booker. Anyone can play along.
Booked to Die by John Dunning is the first book in the Cliff Janeway series. Janeway is a homicide cop with a personal vendetta against a man he knows to be a serial killer, but who keeps slipping through his fingers. He is on the hunt for the person responsible for the death of a book scout, who initially appeared to be another victim of the serial killer but was not. Janeway is a book collector himself and knows a lot of the players in the book sale business in the town, and he starts to make his rounds. But things happen and he ends up out of the police force and setting up shop as a bookseller.
What makes Booked to Die a compelling read is the author’s attention to detail when it comes to the rare book industry. Dunning’s experience as a Denver Post police reporter in the 1970s and his ongoing involvement in the used and rare book trade served as the inspiration for the Cliff Janeway novels. As a result, readers get a glimpse into the inner workings of the book sale business, which adds an extra layer of intrigue to the murder mystery.
I am still unwinding this mystery, but I would not hesitate to pick up another in the series.
This is the story of a dead man, how he got that way, and what happened to some other people because of his death.
John Dunning, Booked to Die
SummaryDenver homicide detective Cliff Janeway may not always play by the book, but he’s an avid collector of rare and first editions. Bobby Westfall is a local bookscout, a gentle and quiet man who has sold enough valuable books to keep himself and his cats fed and housed. When Bobby is murdered, Janeway would like nothing better than to rearrange the suspect’s spine. But the suspect, local lowlife Jackie Newton, is a master at eluding the law, and Janeway’s wrathful brand of off-duty justice costs him his badge.
Turning to his lifelong passion, Janeway opens a small bookshop—all the while searching for evidence to put Newton away. When prized volumes in a highly sought-after collection begin to appear, so do dead bodies. Now Janeway’s life is about to change in profound and shocking ways as he attempts to find out who’s dealing death along with vintage Chandlers and Twains.

Unlawful Harvest and Living Donor Day

April 11 this week was Living Donor Day to raise awareness for living organ donor transplants.
Kidneys are one of the most common living organ donations. Believe it or not, the first successful kidney transplant performed on humans was done in 1954. (Animal donations go back as far as 1902!) In the US, annual kidney donations top 25,000 per year, but this is far below the number actually needed.
Other tissue and organ donations that can be made by living donors include lungs, part of the liver, bone marrow, skin, bone, and blood components.

Unlawful Harvest is the first book in the A Kenzie Kirsch Medical Thriller series. I have just release book #5 in the series, Rushin’ Death, and book #6 and 7 are available for preorder. If you enjoy medical mysteries, Robin Cook, or Bones or CSI, you will enjoy this series! Kenzie Kirsch started out as a secondary character in the Zachary Goldman Mysteries series, and Unlawful Harvest is her origin story.

If you have been reading the Zachary Goldman Mysteries, then you have met Kenzie Kirsch, who works in the medical examiner’s office.
This story will take you back to before Kenzie started medical school, to the case that first attracted her to medical investigation.
When an Urban Legend becomes reality
Kenzie Kirsch had led a sheltered life; daughter of a wealthy lobbyist, her way had been paved for her, and she wasn’t really required to do much in life. There were events to make an appearance at, boards to sit on, fundraisers to support, but she could pick and choose what she wanted to do and how busy she wanted to be.
When she set out to find out why her sister Amanda was so ill, she had no idea where her amateur investigation would take her. Amanda’s illness had never been discussed. Amanda deserved her privacy.
As Kenzie’s questions take her deeper and deeper into the murky world of transplant tourism, Kenzie starts to wonder just what her parents have been covering up, and who else’s life might hang in the balance.

I enjoyed the fast pace of the story which kept me flipping pages late into the night. It is one of those books you just don’t want to put down until you have read the very last word. If you enjoy suspense, intrigue, family drama, spell-binding imagery and great character development, you will absolutely enjoy reading this book.

Ella no necesitaba ninguna complicación.

In case you have not yet read last week’s blog post: check out Celebrating Autistic Identity and observe Autism Acceptance Month by embracing neurodiversity and promoting inclusion for individuals with ASD. Shift perspectives and advocate for autistic rights. Read some autism/neurodiversity positive books!
Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme. Read the rules and more teasers at The Purple Booker. Anyone can play along.
I Shall Not Want is book number six in Julia Spencer-Fleming’s Clare Fergusson and Russ Van Alstyne mysteries series. I have not read the other books in the series, but have had enough information in this episode to read it as a stand alone. It is a good thriller and I would be inclined to read any of the other books in the series.
The characters are unique and well-developed. The mystery has been suspenseful and twisty, and they are getting close to solving it. And there is a strong romantic subplot for those who are looking for it.
Three—well, four, now—murders is certainly enough to grab anyone’s attention. What is going on in this small community that they have not figured out until now?
I have to confess, I am not fond of a flash-forward prologue. The book starts with a high-octane shootout scene, but it’s unclear what is happening or how the characters got there. Then, with a man dying on the ground, the reader is thrown back into the “six months previous” main storyline, with no explanation of how the gunfight ties into the larger narrative.
Thank you … For calling it decisiveness instead of ‘jumping in without thinking things through!’
Julia Spencer-Fleming, I Shall Not Want
SummaryIn the searing conclusion to All Mortal Flesh, Police Chief Russ Van Alstyne’s precarious balance between duty and desire was broken by his wife’s tragic death. Now, Russ and Episcopal priest Clare Fergusson are separated by a wall of guilt and grief. When a farmhand stumbles over a body, Clare is reluctantly drawn into the investigation through her involvement with the migrant community. The discovery of two more bodies could mean a serial killer is on the loose. As spring turns into summer, Russ is plagued by media hysteria, conflict within the police department, and a series of baffling assaults.
Throughout the escalating tensions, emotions are fueled as Russ and Clare find themselves seeking each other out, even as they intend to keep distant.

From Stigma to Strength: Celebrating Autistic Identity

April is Autism Acceptance Month, a month-long observance that should be used to promote acceptance and inclusion for individuals with ASD. Neurodivergence theory teaches that we should accept people for how their brains work, no matter how much they diverge from the norm.
As one of the characters says in His Hands Were Quiet:
Do you have any idea what it feels like to be punished for who you are? For the way your brain was formed? Something you have absolutely no control over?
P.D. Workman, His Hands Were Quiet
And then again later:
Maybe just because our brains are different, that doesn’t mean that we are defective. That we need to be reprogrammed somehow.
P.D. Workman, His Hands Were Quiet
Instead of pathologizing autistic behavior, can we celebrate and accommodate it? Can we recognize the strengths and talents of autistic individuals and provide them with the support and resources they need to thrive? Maybe we can listen to their experiences and perspectives, and create inclusive and accessible environments that value diversity and promote acceptance and understanding.
It can be challenging to unpack the preconceptions, biases, and ableism that we have grown up with. Hard to come to an understanding of the fact that looking normal is not the goal in life. That a rainbow of ways of learning, thinking, communicating, and acting is a good thing. Accommodating different learning styles, communication, socialization, and behaviors benefits everyone, not just those most easily identified as different.
We especially need to listen to and value the experiences and perspectives of neurodivergent individuals rather than assuming that professionals like doctors and therapists know best. We need to create spaces and platforms where they can share their stories, express their opinions, and contribute to the broader discourse on neurodiversity. We must amplify their voices and advocate for their rights.

Hired to investigate the death of an autistic boy in a treatment facility, PI Zachary Goldman is concerned about the therapies he sees there. While he is assured that the children there are not actually being hurt, his investigation leads to the discovery of even deeper institutional abuses.
Battling the ghosts of his own past, Zachary fights to uncover the facility’s dark secrets and to get as many children as he can out of harm’s way.

The way that PD Workman showed the autistic perspective in contrast to the mainstream views about us was lovely. I appreciated it more than I can express in words. She did thorough research on multiple sides of the issue and it shows. She gives multiple autistic perspectives, not just one, and the way they were presented brought me to tears multiple times … The story itself was a solid mystery with many exciting twists and turns along the way. Even if I wasn’t personally invested in the topic (being autistic myself and having autistic children), I still would’ve enjoyed it as a mystery. I’m extremely likely to pick up more of her books now that I’ve read this one!
Zachary Goldman, Private Investigator, is flawed with a capital F. Shattered by the tragedies of his own life, he will somehow still manage to pick himself up and dig just a little bit deeper than anyone else to find the vital clues.
Maybe being broken makes it easier for others who have faced tragedy to trust him. Walk with Zachary as he solves cases that will stretch his abilities to the limit.
Even with his own life in shambles, Zachary Goldman is still the one you want on the case.
Investigate this P.I. mystery now!

Bad turns to worse when he is then apprehended from his family by DFS.
His mother could never have predicted the chain of events in a million years.
In trying to protect him, DFS has actually put Caleb in harm’s way.

“P. D. Workman has outdone herself with this riveting techno-thriller featuring Micah Miller, a forensic artist specializing in composite renderings based on forensic DNA phenotyping … This book offers plenty of thrills, chills, suspense and white-knuckled tension as the plot unfolds and it kept me turning pages until late into the night. The story is clean and well-written, the plot is fascinating, the pace is relentless and the characters are realistic and relatable. I highly recommend this absorbing and thoroughly enjoyable thriller to anyone who favors CSI, NCIS, Cold Case, Forensic Files or any high-tech inspired crime-solving theme.”

From Book 1: We’re thrilled to announce that this Amazon bestseller is also a Human Relations and a B.R.A.G. Medallion winner!
After suddenly receiving custody of his five year old son, Ben must learn how to be a dad. The fact that he’d even fathered a child was news to him. Not only does this mean restructuring his sixty-hour workweek and becoming responsible for another human being, but also Kyle has autism. Enter the school system and a shaky beginning. Under the guidance of a gifted teacher, Ben and Kyle take tentative steps to becoming father and son.
Teacher Melanie Nicols sees Ben as a deadbeat dad, but grudgingly comes to admire how he hangs in, determined to learn for his son’s sake. Her admiration grows to more as father and son come to rely on Melanie being a part of their lives.
When parents receive the news that their child has autism, they spend countless hours researching the subject, usually at night, after an exhausting day. Teachers, when they hear that they’ll have a student with an autism spectrum disorder, also try to learn as much as they can. This novel was written for such parents and teachers – an entertaining read that’s fun, yet still offers strategies and information on autism.

The hope of a nation lies in a tiny number of freedom fighters hidden in the abandoned countryside – most of whom are teenagers who escaped the attack on their special school.

From childhood, Laura James knew she was different. She struggled to cope in a world that often made no sense to her, as though her brain had its own operating system. It wasn’t until she reached her forties that she found out why: Suddenly and surprisingly, she was diagnosed with autism.
With a touching and searing honesty, Laura challenges everything we think we know about what it means to be autistic. Married with four children and a successful journalist, Laura examines the ways in which autism has shaped her career, her approach to motherhood, and her closest relationships. Laura’s upbeat, witty writing offers new insight into the day-to-day struggles of living with autism, as her extreme attention to sensory detail — a common aspect of her autism — is fascinating to observe through her eyes.

There’s a rapidly spreading infectious disease outside, and no one can leave their houses or travel without a permit. Which means that they’re stuck at Hope. And this time, no one is watching out for them at all.

Ordinary household objects came to life; the spirits of long-dead slave children were his best friends. Aging with Attitude: Geezer-Lit Mysteries
Ever feel like a fictional character was just too good to be believed? Check out my blog post on Kenzie Kirsch, secondary character in the Zachary Goldman Mysteries series and the protagonist in the spin-off series Kenzie Kirsch Medical Thrillers. Some people might think that Kenzie is a saint, but she has her own flaws!
Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme. Read the rules and more teasers at The Purple Booker. Anyone can play along.
Retirement Homes are Murder is the first book in the Paul Jacobson Geezer-lit Mystery Series by Mike Befeler. This book is a fun and lighthearted mystery that follows several senior characters in an old age home who become embroiled in a murder investigation. The protagonist, Paul Jacobson, suffers from a unique form of amnesia that causes him to forget anything that happened in the past five years if he falls asleep. His fellow residents also struggle with various afflictions of old age, including macular degeneration and incontinence.
The plot centers around Paul, who becomes the prime suspect in the murder of a man he knew before moving into the retirement home. The police believe that Paul had a strong motive for the murder, and he must work to clear his name and find the true culprit.
While Retirement Homes are Murder is often classified as a cozy mystery, readers should be aware that it contains some explicit language and an explicit sex scene. However, the book is still humorous and features an amateur sleuth, making it an enjoyable read for fans of the genre. Overall, this book is a unique and entertaining addition to the world of geezer-lit mysteries.
“I’m Paul Jacobson,” I said.

“I know,” the white-bearded man said. “We met yesterday.”
What is “geezer lit”?The term geezer lit may have been coined by Mike Befeler. I don’t see it being used on many other books. As you might guess, geezer lit refers to books that feature older male protagonists dealing with the challenges and joys of aging. Geezer lit explores themes such as retirement, loss, illness, and relationships with family and friends. It is often characterized by a wry sense of humor and a focus on the everyday struggles and triumphs of older men.

Interview with Mike Befeler: Older People Make Great Characters
I previously wrote about Martha’s Vineyard, another mystery with an elderly protagonist, this one a woman. Maybe they are becoming more popular.
SummaryRemembering nothing from the day before, crotchety octogenarian Paul Jacobson must become an amateur sleuth to clear himself as a murder suspect when he finds a dead body in the trash chute of a retirement home.
As Paul’s snooping and short-term memory loss get him in trouble with the local police, his new friends and granddaughter Jennifer help him solve an expanding list of crimes. Paul finds romance as he struggles to escape a murderer intent on a repeat performance.
