⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I love the magical characters in this series. They never fail to keep you entertained. Such a fun series.—Kandy

Tainted Truffle Treachery is a paranormal mystery novel that will keep you on the edge of your seat. With a touch of witchcraft and a dash of suspense, this book is perfect for fans of small town mysteries and psychic detectives.

Fall under Reg’s spell today.

—Another great work of art by Ms. Workman. I am amazed at the diversity of her writing and how much I really enjoy them all. She can write cozy mystery, YA books that should be read by all, medical thrillers, Zach Goldman series and now a paranormal series. I am so glad to have found this author. I am honored that I get to read them early also.

—This book has all my favourite things: heart, great writing, nearly-flawless editing, something unusual in the air, and a cat. I needed a light read, and this fit the bill perfectly. Recommended.

—This book actually surprised me. I knew that a psychic cat would be entertaining. I just didn’t expect it to be this good. You really do get wrapped up in the people and story. It sounds like a fairly gentle story, but there is a lot of suspense involved. Add a bunch of humor to the mix and you are in for a treat. I love the characters. Wish I had some friends like them. And the cat is so very well done. Acts like a typical cat, but a lot smarter than his human. This is a story that you don’t want to put down.

—Extremely well written as are all of P.D. Workman’s books, the characters well developed. I’m a character reader, I get into the characters. Who and what they are. Why they do the things they do. The things that make a reader get invested into the characters and thereby the book. I look forward to P.D. Workman’s next book.

—P D Workman has done it again; created a cast of characters and a storyline that are captivating and enthralling. Once I started this cozy I didn’t want to put it down (which can be a bad thing when you have a family to take care of…lol). I can’t wait for the other books in this series. I think Reg is going to turn out to be one of my favorite new characters. Pick up your copy as soon as possible.

“Every single one of [P.D. Workman’s] books has spoken to me … And I have found strength in the books I’ve read.”

“This is one author I certainly will be looking out for, I can’t recommend her enough.”

“I’ll read anything by P. D. Workman that I can get my hands on.”

“Every book by PD Workman that I’ve read has been a gripping one, however different the genres are, going from lighter mysteries to really dark ones… this is one of my favourite, most dependable authors.”

“P.D. Workman is an incredibly versatile writer. No matter which of her books I read I am drawn into a great story and honestly, I don’t think I’ve followed another author that could go from cozy mystery to YA to a PI series dealing with mental health issues. Really enjoy her books!”

“[P.D. Workman’s] stories are so believable and you can’t help but feel like you know these people. You find yourself crying, laughing and feeling the characters emotions. Now if an author can make you cry and feel every emotion in a story, she is one hell of an author.”

“P. D. Workman, does not shy from probing the deep psychological scars of childhood trauma, mental illness, and addiction. Also characteristic of this author, these extremely sensitive issues are explored with extensive empathy, described with incredible clarity, and portrayed with profound insight.”

“Once again P.D.Workman has created an intense psychological mystery that impacts a wallop of thought induction. The writing is so well developed and draws you into the characters story.”

May is Lyme Disease Awareness Month: Info and Books to Read

Reading for Lyme Disease Awareness

May is Lyme Disease Awareness Month, a time to educate the public about this tick-borne illness affecting thousands of people yearly. By educating ourselves and taking precautions to prevent tick bites, we can work towards reducing the spread of Lyme disease and improving outcomes for those affected.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there are approximately 30,000 cases of Lyme disease reported each year in the United States. However, because many cases go unreported or undiagnosed, the actual number of cases is likely much higher.

Lyme disease can be a costly and complex illness, and many patients struggle to access the care they need. By raising awareness, we can work towards improving outcomes for Lyme disease patients.

How Lyme Disease is SpreadPlush replica of the Borrelia burgdorferi bacterium

Lyme disease is caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi, which is transmitted to humans through the bite of infected black-legged ticks (don’t click if you don’t like creepy crawlies.) These ticks are commonly found in wooded areas and can also be found in grassy and brushy areas.

This is a picture of a Borrelia burgdorferi bacterium plushie that I saw on Amazon. They aren’t actually this cute and cuddly…

Signs and Symptoms of Lyme Disease

From the Mayo Clinic

Stage 1

Early symptoms of Lyme disease usually happen within 3 to 30 days after a tick bite. This stage of disease has a limited set of symptoms. This is called early localized disease.

A rash is a common sign of Lyme disease. But it doesn’t always happen. The rash is usually a single circle that slowly spreads from the site of the tick bite. It may become clear in the center and look like a target or bull’s-eye. The rash often feels warm to the touch, But it’s usually not painful or itchy.

Other stage 1 symptoms include:

FeverHeadacheExtreme tirednessJoint stiffnessMuscle aches and painsSwollen lymph nodesStage 2

Without treatment, Lyme disease can get worse.  The symptoms often show up within 3 to 10 weeks after a tick bite. Stage 2 is often more serious and widespread. It is called early disseminated disease.

Stage 2 may include the stage 1 symptoms and the following:

Many rashes on other parts of the bodyNeck pain or stiffnessMuscle weakness on one or both sides of the faceImmune-system activity in heart tissue that causes irregular heartbeatsPain that starts from the back and hips and spreads to the legsPain, numbness or weakness in the hands or feetPainful swelling in tissues of the eye or eyelidImmune-system activity in eye nerves that causes pain or vision lossStage 3

In the third stage, you may have symptoms from the earlier stages and other symptoms. This stage is called late disseminated disease.

In the United States, the most common condition of this stage is arthritis in large joints, particularly the knees. Pain, swelling or stiffness may last for a long time. Or the symptoms may come and go. Stage 3 symptoms usually begin 2 to 12 months after a tick bite.

The type of Lyme disease common in Europe can cause a skin condition called acrodermatitis chronic atrophicans. The skin on the backs of the hands and tops of the feet get discolored and swell. It also may show up over the elbows and knees. More-serious cases may cause damage to tissues or joints.

This skin condition may show up many months to many years after a tick bite.

Post-Treatment Lyme Disease Syndrome (PTLDS)

It is important to note that Lyme disease can be difficult to diagnose and treat, and there is still much to be learned about it. In rare cases, patients may experience ongoing symptoms even after treatment, a condition known as Post-Treatment Lyme Disease Syndrome (PTLDS) or chronic Lyme disease.

Disease Prevention

Prevention is key when it comes to Lyme disease. The CDC recommends wearing long sleeves and pants, using insect repellent, and performing tick checks after spending time outdoors. It is also important to remove any ticks promptly and properly to reduce the risk of infection.

Since some of these ticks can be as small as the head of a pin, it can be very difficult to find them on your body (or your pet’s) even with a careful search. Hairy areas make it even more difficult to see them.

Lyme Disease Research

Research is ongoing to better understand Lyme disease and improve diagnosis and treatment options. The DOD has a Tick-Borne Disease Research Program that supports research on tick-borne diseases, including Lyme disease. Healthcare providers play a crucial role in diagnosing and treating Lyme disease, and patients should seek medical attention if they suspect they have been bitten by a tick or have symptoms of Lyme disease.

To help combat Lyme disease, there are ongoing efforts to develop a vaccine. The FDA approved the first Lyme disease vaccine in 1998 but was later withdrawn from the market. However, there are currently several vaccine candidates in development that show promise.

Lyme disease is not something that is regularly addressed in literature (especially fiction)! I have two books that mention it. The major one, of course, is In the Tick of Time, which is focused on the spread of tick-borne diseases, including Lyme disease. I also mention it in the Medical Kidnap Files, as Carmel Oss, one of Gabriel and Renata’s helpers, suffers the long-term effects of an undiagnosed Lyme disease infection. Carmel first appears in Proxy, and also has a major role in Fail.

But knowing it instinctively and proving it were two completely different things, especially when his boss and coworkers already thought that, battling sleep deprivation, he’d already gone around the bend.

Matt knew that solving the mysteries of the Buffalo Head cluster was a matter of life and death.

He just didn’t know that it could be a matter of his life and death.

It could happen to you. Maybe it already has.

Feast on this new mystery today.

A nail-biting, creepy-crawly, medical-thriller that fans of Robin Cook will devour.

This time, it’s one of their own!

After working underground to reunite apprehended teens with their parents for as long as they have, Gabriel and Renata have seen it all. But this time, it’s personal. When the young children of one of the families who have helped with the movement are seized, they prepare to do whatever it takes to have them returned before more damage can be done.

While Carmel and her family have been staunch supporters of the underground movement, they had never revealed their own experiences with DCFS. Now their history and their alliance with Gabriel and Renata have come back to haunt them.

A family torn apart.

Two innocent children being used to even the score.

It’s time to bring them home.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐  I found this book to be relevant, well-written, and thoroughly absorbing, if not a bit unsettling. P. D. Workman never fails to engage, enlighten, and entertain with her spellbinding stories and this book is no exception.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Highly recommended! I’m decades past being a “young adult” and find the books in this series to be riveting. They are expertly crafted, with well developed characters and intriguing plots. I enjoyed this book and am looking forward to the next in the series.

How Lyme Disease Stole My Childhood, Made Me Crazy, and Almost Killed Me

Ally was at a breaking point when she woke up in a psych ward at the age of eighteen. She couldn’t put a sentence together, let alone take a shower, eat a meal, or pick up a phone. What had gone wrong? In recent years, she had produced a feature film, a popular reality show for a major network, and had acted in an off-Broadway play. But now, Ally was pushed to a psychotic break after struggling since she was seven years old with physical symptoms that no doctor could explain; everything from joint pain, to night sweats, memory loss, nausea, and brain fog. A doctor in the psych ward was finally able to give her the answers her and her family had desperately been searching for, and the diagnosis that all the previous doctors had missed. She learned that she had Lyme disease-and finally had a breakthrough.

What she didn’t know was that this diagnosis would lead her down some of the most excruciating years of her life before beginning her journey to recovery from eleven years of misdiagnosis and physical pain. She would need to find her courage to heal physically, mentally, and emotionally, and become the survivor she is today.

Set against the backdrop of the fast-paced fashion and entertainment industries, Bite Me shares the heartbreaking and hilarious stories that moved Ally forward on her journey from sickness to health. Its themes will be familiar to more than 300,000 Americans diagnosed with Lyme disease each year, many of whom, like Ally, wondered for years what was wrong with them. Bite Me offers readers hope and ideas for how one can transition from victim to survivor, and shares the spiritual principles and actions that have contributed to her wholeness as a human, mother, and international spokesperson against Lyme disease.

Torn from the front lines of medical debate and the author’s own experience with Lyme Disease, Over the Edge is riveting fiction, full of twists and turns—and powerful truths about today’s medical field.

Janessa McNeil’s husband, Dr. Brock McNeil, a researcher and professor at Stanford University’s Department of Medicine, specializes in tick-borne diseases—especially Lyme. For years he has insisted that Chronic Lyme Disease doesn’t exist. Even as patients across the country are getting sicker, the committee Brock chairs is about to announce its latest findings—which will further seal the door shut for Lyme treatment.

One embittered man sets out to prove Dr. McNeil wrong by giving him a close-up view of the very disease he denies. The man infects Janessa with Lyme, then states his demand: convince her husband to publicly reverse his stand on Lyme—or their young daughter will be next.

But Janessa’s marriage is already rocky. She’s so sick she can hardly move or think. And her husband denies she has Lyme at all.

Welcome to the Lyme wars, Janessa.

The Secret History of Lyme Disease and Biological Weapons

A riveting thriller reminiscent of The Hot Zone, this true story dives into the mystery surrounding one of the most controversial and misdiagnosed conditions of our time—Lyme disease—and of Willy Burgdorfer, the man who discovered the microbe behind it, revealing his secret role in developing bug-borne biological weapons, and raising terrifying questions about the genesis of the epidemic of tick-borne diseases affecting millions of Americans today.

While on vacation on Martha’s Vineyard, Kris Newby was bitten by an unseen tick. That one bite changed her life forever, pulling her into the abyss of a devastating illness that took ten doctors to diagnose and years to recover: Newby had become one of the 300,000 Americans who are afflicted with Lyme disease each year.

As a science writer, she was driven to understand why this disease is so misunderstood, and its patients so mistreated. This quest led her to Willy Burgdorfer, the Lyme microbe’s discoverer, who revealed that he had developed bug-borne bioweapons during the Cold War, and believed that the Lyme epidemic was started by a military experiment gone wrong.

In a superb, meticulous work of narrative journalism, Bitten takes readers on a journey to investigate these claims, from biological weapons facilities to interviews with biosecurity experts and microbiologists doing cutting-edge research, all the while uncovering darker truths about Willy. It also leads her to uncomfortable questions about why Lyme can be so difficult to both diagnose and treat, and why the government is so reluctant to classify chronic Lyme as a disease.

A gripping, infectious page-turner, Bitten will shed a terrifying new light on an epidemic that is exacting an incalculable toll on us, upending much of what we believe we know about it.

The First Epidemic of Climate Change

Lyme disease is spreading rapidly around the globe as ticks move into places they could not survive before. The first epidemic to emerge in the era of climate change, the disease infects half a million people in the US and Europe each year, and untold multitudes in Canada, China, Russia, and Australia.

Mary Beth Pfeiffer shows how we have contributed to this growing menace, and how modern medicine has underestimated its danger. She tells the heart-rending stories of families destroyed by a single tick bite, of children disabled, and of one woman’s tragic choice after an exhaustive search for a cure.

Pfeiffer also warns of the emergence of other tick-borne illnesses that make Lyme more difficult to treat and pose their own grave risks. Lyme is an impeccably researched account of an enigmatic disease, making a powerful case for action to fight ticks, heal patients, and recognize humanity’s role in a modern scourge.

Natural Healing of Lyme Borreliosis and the Coinfections Chlamydia and Spotted Fever Rickettsiosis

Lyme disease infects a minimum of 300,000 people per year in the United States and millions more throughout the rest of the world. Symptoms run from mild lethargy to severe arthritis to heart disease to incapacitating mental dysfunction. Although tests have improved over the past decade, they are still not completely reliable, and antibiotics are only partially effective. Up to thirty-five percent of those infected will not respond to antibiotic treatment or will relapse. The spirochetes that cause Lyme are stealth pathogens―they can hide within cells or alter their form so that our immune systems cannot find them, as well as inhibit the effectiveness of antibiotics. Lyme disease is, in fact, a potent emerging epidemic disease for which technological medicine is only partially effective. The coinfections that accompany Lyme are often as, or more, incapacitating than Lyme itself. Worldwide, hundreds of millions experience infection with babesia, bartonella, ehrlichia, anaplasma, mycoplasma, chlamydia, and the spotted fever rickettsiosis.

Healing Lyme examines the leading, scientific research on Lyme infection and its tests and treatments, and outlines the most potent natural medicines that offer help, either alone or in combination with antibiotics, for preventing and healing the disease. The book has been a bestseller for over a decade, and during that time the author has had contact with over 25,000 people who have used some form of these protocols during their healing journey. This edition has been significantly updated, fully revised, and expanded to reflect the increased understandings from that extensive contact, including depth-treatment experiences with hundreds during the past decade. Healing Lyme is the primary text in print on what Lyme bacteria do in the body and how natural approaches can heal the disease. It is the first book in print covering depth understanding and treatment of chlamydial and rickettsial coinfections.

This new updated version of Healing Lyme joins the author’s other two books on the treatment of Lyme coinfections (babesia, bartonella, mycoplasma, anaplasma, and ehrlichia) and completes his exhaustive work on these stealth pathogens.

A Thrilling Way to Explore World Cultures

World Day for Cultural Awareness is celebrated on May 21 every year, providing an opportunity to promote cultural diversity and understanding. In today’s world, where people are increasingly isolated and divided, it is important to celebrate our differences and learn from each other. As an author, I strive to incorporate diverse perspectives and cultures into my writing, promoting empathy and understanding among readers.

Incorporating diverse perspectives and cultures into literature is crucial for promoting empathy and understanding. Through my Parks Pat Mysteries series, I aim to showcase the importance of cultural awareness and empathy in literature. The series provides readers with a thrilling read while also offering glimpses into Canada’s Indigenous culture.

My Parks Pat Mysteries series is set in beautiful parks in and around Calgary, following Detective Margie Patenaude as she investigates a string of murders while juggling the challenges of being a single mom and Métis woman. With each case, Margie and her team investigate a murder in a different park in Calgary, providing vivid descriptions of the city’s natural beauty. The mysteries are intricate and fast-paced, and readers will love the well-developed characters and situations that are believable. There are currently six books out, with three more being released next month (including Sanctuary in the Stream, which will be my 100th published book!)

The series has received praise from readers, commenting on the excellent writing, twisty plots, and interesting glimpses into Canada’s Indigenous culture. The books are quick reads, making them perfect for those days when readers need a break from their busy lives. As an author, I believe that reading diverse books can help promote understanding and empathy.

World Day for Cultural Awareness is a reminder to celebrate diversity and learn from each other. I hope that the Parks Pat Mysteries series can promote cultural understanding and provide a thrilling read at the same time. Pick up a copy of the series and take a walk in a Calgary park with Parks Pat today!

OUT WITH THE SUNSET

Margie Patenaude is new in town and wasn’t expecting to get called to a murder scene on her daughter’s first day of school.

It’s an ugly murder in a beautiful setting. How can Calgary’s park-goers feel safe with a murderer still on the streets—or pathways? Margie and the team are on the case while at the same time she and her daughter try to acclimatize to the new city.

LONG CLIMB TO THE TOP

Detective Pat is called out to another park homicide scene with disturbing similarities to the Fish Creek murder. Digging more deeply into the evidence reveals something even more worrisome. If her instincts are right, this case may hit a little too close to home.

DARK WATER UNDER THE BRIDGE

Detective “Parks” Pat has made a name for herself in solving the Fish Creek and Glenbow Ranch murders, so she is the one they call when a body turns up in Ralph Klein Park. She would be happy for the confidence placed in her if it weren’t for the fact that the body is in the water.

IMMERSED IN THE VIEW

Detective “Parks” Pat is back. Now an established and accepted member of the homicide squad, she unexpectedly brings a new case to the table when she stumbles across a body as Canada Day dawns. While it was initially assumed to be an accidental drowning, the autopsy results say otherwise.

SKIMMING OVER THE LAKE

It’s Parade Day, and Margie would have thought that any trouble would have centered around drinking and motor vehicles. Or being trampled by horses. Or clowns. But the latest homicide investigation is nowhere near the parade route, but on the outskirts of town. And the culprit appears to be a tiny boat.

HAZARD OF THE HILLS

A woman is found at the bottom of a 70-meter drop. It is pretty clear from the beginning that she was killed in the fall.

But you can never be sure until the medical examiner’s report comes back. It would appear that there is a lot more to be investigated after all.

COMING SOON!

Three more books in the series are available for preorder. Don’t miss Knows the Hills, Spanning the Creek, and Sanctuary in the Stream.

Investigate this new series today!

AND MORE

In addition to my Parks Pat Mysteries series, many other books can provide insight into different cultures and perspectives.

When Poe Baxter and her friend Beattie travel to Lima, Peru, to hunt down a rare collection of Peruvian folktales, the two women find themselves mixed up in a game of deceit that echoes the legend of the chullachaqui. Soon, they’re having trouble telling truth from lie, even when their lives are at stake.

Can Poe and Beattie discern what is real from what is myth before it’s too late?

Four mothers, four daughters, four families, whose histories shift with the four winds depending on who’s telling the stories. In 1949, four Chinese women, recent immigrants to San Francisco, meet weekly to play mahjong and tell stories of what they left behind in China. United in loss and new hope for their daughters’ futures, they call themselves the Joy Luck Club. Their daughters, who have never heard these stories, think their mothers’ advice is irrelevant to their modern American lives – until their own inner crises reveal how much they’ve unknowingly inherited of their mothers’ pasts.

With wit and sensitivity, Amy Tan examines the sometimes painful, often tender, and always deep connection between mothers and daughters. As each woman reveals her secrets, trying to unravel the truth about her life, the strings become more tangled, more entwined. Mothers boast or despair over daughters, and daughters roll their eyes even as they feel the inextricable tightening of their matriarchal ties. Tan is an astute storyteller, enticing readers to immerse themselves into these lives of complexity and mystery.

Other books that can promote cultural awareness include by Jhumpa Lahiri, which explores the experiences of an Indian-American family, and The Color Purple by Alice Walker, which provides a powerful portrayal of the experiences of African-American women in the South. The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy is another great book that explores the experiences of a family in India.

@media screen and (min-width:768px){.stk-2384564{flex:1 1 calc(66.7% - var(--stk-column-gap,0px) * 1 / 2 ) !important}}The Namesake

Jhumpa Lahiri’s Interpreter of Maladies established this young writer as one the most brilliant of her generation. Her stories are one of the very few debut works — and only a handful of collections — to have won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction. Among the many other awards and honors it received were the New Yorker Debut of the Year award, the PEN/Hemingway Award, and the highest critical praise for its grace, acuity, and compassion in detailing lives transported from India to America.

In The Namesake, Lahiri enriches the themes that made her collection an international bestseller: the immigrant experience, the clash of cultures, the conflicts of assimilation, and, most poignantly, the tangled ties between generations. Here again Lahiri displays her deft touch for the perfect detail — the fleeting moment, the turn of phrase — that opens whole worlds of emotion.

The Namesake takes the Ganguli family from their tradition-bound life in Calcutta through their fraught transformation into Americans. On the heels of their arranged wedding, Ashoke and Ashima Ganguli settle together in Cambridge, Massachusetts. An engineer by training, Ashoke adapts far less warily than his wife, who resists all things American and pines for her family. When their son is born, the task of naming him betrays the vexed results of bringing old ways to the new world. Named for a Russian writer by his Indian parents in memory of a catastrophe years before, Gogol Ganguli knows only that he suffers the burden of his heritage as well as his odd, antic name.

Lahiri brings great empathy to Gogol as he stumbles along the first-generation path, strewn with conflicting loyalties, comic detours, and wrenching love affairs. With penetrating insight, she reveals not only the defining power of the names and expectations bestowed upon us by our parents, but also the means by which we slowly, sometimes painfully, come to define ourselves.

A powerful cultural touchstone of modern American literature, The Color Purple depicts the lives of African American women in early twentieth-century rural Georgia. Separated as girls, sisters Celie and Nettie sustain their loyalty to and hope in each other across time, distance and silence. Through a series of letters spanning twenty years, first from Celie to God, then the sisters to each other despite the unknown, the novel draws readers into its rich and memorable portrayals of Celie, Nettie, Shug Avery and Sofia and their experience. The Color Purple broke the silence around domestic and sexual abuse, narrating the lives of women through their pain and struggle, companionship and growth, resilience and bravery. Deeply compassionate and beautifully imagined, Alice Walker’s epic carries readers on a spirit-affirming journey towards redemption and love.

The year is 1969. In the state of Kerala, on the southernmost tip of India, a skyblue Plymouth with chrome tailfins is stranded on the highway amid a Marxist workers’ demonstration. Inside the car sit two-egg twins Rahel and Esthappen, and so begins their tale. . . .

Armed only with the invincible innocence of children, they fashion a childhood for themselves in the shade of the wreck that is their family—their lonely, lovely mother, Ammu (who loves by night the man her children love by day), their blind grandmother, Mammachi (who plays Handel on her violin), their beloved uncle Chacko (Rhodes scholar, pickle baron, radical Marxist, bottom-pincher), their enemy, Baby Kochamma (ex-nun and incumbent grandaunt), and the ghost of an imperial entomologist’s moth (with unusually dense dorsal tufts).

When their English cousin, Sophie Mol, and her mother, Margaret Kochamma, arrive on a Christmas visit, Esthappen and Rahel learn that Things Can Change in a Day. That lives can twist into new, ugly shapes, even cease forever, beside their river “graygreen.” With fish in it. With the sky and trees in it. And at night, the broken yellow moon in it.

Violence and Corruption in the Wyoming Wilderness: Storm Watch

May marks the celebration of both Mother’s Day and National Family Month, making it the perfect time to read books that honor the importance of family and motherhood. Check out my blog post for book recommendations, including my Parks Pat Mysteries series and other YA books about parent-child relationships. Classic books such as Little Women and The Joy Luck Club are also great options. Whatever you choose to read, remember to cherish the relationships that matter most to you. Happy reading!

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme. Read the rules and more teasers at The Purple Booker. Anyone can play along.

Storm Watch is the latest (23rd) book in the Joe Pickett series. I have read a number of C.J. Box stories, both in this series and the Cody Hoyt/Cassie Newell series. He always pulls together good characters and a great story with plenty of twists and turns. I was a little surprised at the amount of gunplay in this one; there is one scene in particular with what I would consider a lot of gratuitous violence. I’m okay with the apparently random murders that Joe Pickett is trying to solve, but I prefer the criminals to be arrested rather than slaughtered, especially when the main character is a lawman.

But I like Joe and his family and enjoy the scenery (while I am not in Wyoming, I do live in cattle country on the edge of the Rocky Mountains and the prairie, so the setting is very familiar.) The plot is always well-done and as the reader you are given plenty of clues, even if you can’t see the full picture until he pulls it all together in the end.

“Let’s go find this fool before he dies out here.”

C.J. Box, Storm Watch
Summary

When a prominent University of Wyoming professor goes missing, authorities are stumped. That is, until Joe Pickett makes two surprising discoveries while hunting down a wounded elk on his district as an epic spring storm descends upon him. First, he finds the professor’s vehicle parked on a remote mountainside. Then Joe finds the professor’s frozen and mutilated body. When he attempts to learn more, his investigation is obstructed by federal agents, extremists, and Governor Colter Allen.

Nate Romanowski is rebuilding his falconry company—and financing this through crypto mining with the assistance of Geronimo Jones. He’s then approached by a shadowy group of local militant activists that is gaining in power and influence, and demanding that Wyoming join other western states and secede from the union—by force, if necessary. They ask Nate to throw in with them, but he’s wary. Should he trust them, or is he being set up?

As a storm of peril gathers around them, Joe and Nate confront it in different ways—and maybe, for the first time, on opposite sides.

Family Matters: Books that Celebrate the Power of Love and Connection

As well as Mother’s Day being in May in North America, May is also National Family Month. A coincidence? Somehow I doubt it.

Mother’s Day is a great time to buy mom—or yourself—some new books!

So I was trying to decide which books to use to promote family and motherhood. Of course, a lot of the characters in both my YA series and my adult crimes series tend to be foster kids, throwaways, street kids, and others who have not had a strong positive mother influence in their lives.

But my Parks Pat Mysteries series does have a strong mother-daughter pairing in Detective Margie Patenaude and her teen daughter Christine. Margie is a single mom, with little mentioned about her past or how she became one. It is clear that she has been parenting alone for a long time.

There is good communication and respect between Margie and Christina, for the most part. Of course, Margie does sometimes disappoint Christine by not always being home when she said she would be or demanding answers to questions about Christina’s boyfriend. And Christina is growing up too fast, sometimes has a teenager attitude, and doesn’t like her privacy to be invaded by her mother. In other words, a normal, healthy, mother-daughter relationship.

I have just recently released an omnibus version of the first six books in the Parks Pat Mysteries series.

Looking for a gripping police procedural series set in the stunning parks of Calgary?

Look no further than the Parks Pat Mysteries by P.D. Workman. Follow Detective Margie Patenaude as she investigates a string of murders in the city’s parks, all while juggling the challenges of being a single mom and Métis woman.

Readers will love the fast-paced action, intricate mysteries, and vivid descriptions of Calgary’s natural beauty. With each case, you’ll be transported to a new park, keeping you on the edge of your seat until the very end.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ The writing is excellent, the plot is nice and twisty and the the characters and situations are believable. I enjoyed this book and am looking forward to seeing where she takes these new characters.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ This is another well-written, briskly-paced mystery featuring great characters, lots of interesting glimpses into Canada’s Indigenous culture, and a satisfying resolution all wrapped up in delightful quick-read police procedural by an author who could make a description of drying paint sound fascinating.

Whether you’re a fan of police procedurals, Canadian mysteries, or just looking for a thrilling read, the Parks Pat Mysteries are sure to satisfy. Don’t miss out on this exciting new series — grab your copy today!

These short mysteries are just right for those days when you could use a break from your busy life.

Take a walk in a Calgary park with Parks Pat.

This collection includes cases 1-6

I do have a few other books with strong parent-child relationships that you might be interested in. Most are YA:

Endless Change (mother-son)Making Her Mark (a developing father-daughter relationship)Cynthia Has a SecretQuesting for a Dream (grandfather parent figure)

In addition to these books, plenty of other great reads celebrate the importance of family and motherhood. Here are a few classic recommendations:

Little Women by Louisa May Alcott – This classic novel follows the lives of four sisters as they navigate the challenges of growing up and finding their place in the world, with their mother as a guiding force. The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan – This novel explores the complex relationships between four Chinese immigrant mothers and their American-born daughters as they struggle to bridge the gap between their different cultures. The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls – This memoir tells the story of Walls’ unconventional upbringing with her artistic, free-spirited mother and her alcoholic father, and the resilience she developed as a result. The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd – Set in the 1960s South, this novel follows young Lily Owens as she seeks to uncover the truth about her mother’s past, with the help of a group of strong, independent women.

No matter what kind of book you choose to celebrate Mother’s Day and National Family Month, the most important thing is to spend time with the people you love and cherish the relationships that matter most to you. Happy reading!

Join Flavia de Luce on Her Latest Morbid Adventure

Last week was National DNA Day! Celebrate the discovery of DNA and all of its practical uses by picking up up some suspenseful stories featuring DNA technology!

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme. Read the rules and more teasers at The Purple Booker. Anyone can play along.

The Grave’s a Fine and Private Place, Flavia de Luce Mystery #9 by Alan Bradley is the third or fourth of the Flavia books that I have read (and yes, I admit to reading them out of order, as I frequently do when reading a series that I enjoy.)

Precocious and morbid, Flavia de Luce is much like Wednesday on The Addam’s Family; obsessed with death, decay, and poisons. But unlike the Addam’s Family, the rest of the de Luce family does not share Flavia’s interests. Although Dogger, her father’s manservant, has developed into quite a sleuth himself. Flavia sees herself as a chemist, and an accomplished one at that. She has helped the local constabulary solve several mysteries before this one.

In this installment, the de Luce family is away from home for a quiet holiday following a family tragedy. Like many an amateur sleuth, Flavia stumbles over bodies everywhere she goes. This time, she discovers one in the river, the apparently drowned man rising to the surface as she and the family are out for a boat ride.

There is a circus in town with performers and carnies, and Flavia also makes the acquaintance of the undertaker’s young son, an amateur aerial photographer. In addition, there are a number of other interesting and unique townspeople to spice up the plot.

The Flavia de Luce books are a lot of fun if you aren’t put off by someone who is so cheerfully morbid.

*Note that the Amazon Summary copied below the graphic may contain spoilers.

“Think of Huckleberry Finn,” Daffy had said. “Who knows, Flavia? You might even be fortunate enough to find a dead body in a floating house.”

Alan Bradley, The Grave’s a Fine and Private Place
You might even be fortunate enough to find a dead body in a floating house Flavia de LuceSummary

In the wake of an unthinkable family tragedy, twelve-year-old Flavia de Luce is struggling to fill her empty days. For a needed escape, Dogger, the loyal family servant, suggests a boating trip for Flavia and her two older sisters. As their punt drifts past the church where a notorious vicar had recently dispatched three of his female parishioners by spiking their communion wine with cyanide, Flavia, an expert chemist with a passion for poisons, is ecstatic.

Suddenly something grazes against her fingers as she dangles them in the water. She clamps down on the object, imagining herself as Ernest Hemingway battling a marlin, and pulls up what she expects will be a giant fish. But in Flavia’s grip is something far better: a human head, attached to a human body.

If anything could take Flavia’s mind off sorrow, it is solving a murder—although one that may lead the young sleuth to an early grave.

From USA Today Bestselling Author, P.D. Workman!

A Sleepwalking Psychic Sleuth

In the small town of Black Sands, strange things are happening. People are being attacked or disappearing, leaving the community in a state of fear and the police department confused. But when Reg starts investigating, she worries that she may be the one responsible for the chaos—or at least, some of it.

With the help of Detective Marta Jessup, friends, and magical familiars, Reg must confront her innermost fears and explore the depths of her abilities to uncover the truth behind the mysterious attacks and expose the culprits before it is too late.

Will she be able to control her powers and save the town from the dark force that threatens to destroy it?

Praise for the series:

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Just when I think Ms. Workman can’t possibly think up anything different for this series, she delivers big time. —Sandy

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I love the magical characters in this series. They never fail to keep you entertained. Such a fun series.—Kandy

Like paranormal mysteries? Psychics, witches, fairies, and more! Award-winning and USA Today Bestselling Author P.D. Workman waves her wand to transport readers to the myth- and magic-filled small town of Black Sands for another paranormal cozy mystery to be solved by Reg Rawlins and her friends.

A self-professed con artist practicing as a contact to the dead, a drop-dead gorgeous warlock, and a psychic cat—what could go wrong?

Nose Hill Park

Knows the Hills is set in Nose Hill Park

Nose Hill Park was created in 1980, shortly after I moved to Calgary, and was within walking distance of my home and school. It apparently looks like a nose from some perspectives (though I have never seen the resemblance…)

It covers 2,784 acres, slightly smaller than Fish Creek Provincial Park (the setting for Out with the Sunset) and Glenbow Ranch Provincial Park (the location for Long Climb to the Top) and is one of the top ten largest municipal parks in Canada. From most viewlines in the city, it appears to be almost entirely grassland, but there are a lot of treed areas as well, especially in the lower-lying areas between the hills (coulees).

Nose Hill Park is home to many plant and animal species, both predators (coyotes and hawks) and prey (such as Richardson ground squirrels, mice, voles, and porcupines).

The City of Calgary website for Nose Hill Park includes this note: “Coyotes are generally not a threat to people but should be treated with respect. Never approach or feed a coyote.” While there are occasional coyote attacks in Calgary, there have been no human fatalities.

National DNA Day: Featuring Virtually Harmless and More Thrilling Reads

April 25 was National DNA Day! On April 25, 1953, James Watson and Francis Crick formally announced their discovery of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) in a short letter published in the science journal, Nature. Their discovery has changed the world.

Disease and health care, genealogy, and crime investigation are three areas that have been hugely impacted by the discovery of DNA.

Where would crime fiction be without DNA evidence? So many cases, fictional and real-world, have been solved using DNA evidence.

The information that they can pull from your DNA now is amazing.

Reading science magazines in the 1980s, I predicted that someday we would reach the point where we would be able to describe a perpetrator (hair and eye colour, etc.) and maybe even face or body structure from a DNA sample left at the scene. Well, that day is today!

My fictional character Micah Miller is a forensic artist who works with composite pictures like this one to construct the likeness of criminals, victims, and persons of interest. In honor of National DNA Day, I have put Virtually Harmless on sale for a limited time for just $1.99 on Kindle and my eStore. Get it now, because it won’t last.

From award-winning and USA Today Bestselling Author, P.D. Workman

Micah lived a quiet, comfortable life, her involvement in law enforcement limited to the composite pictures that she produced with her computer and colored pencils.

But everything is turned upside down when she involves herself in the case of an infant found abandoned in the Sweetgrass Hills.

With the help of her knowledge of DNA and law enforcement contacts across the country, Micah is closing in on a killer. But her investigation draws the killer’s attention, and she finds herself in the middle of an operation that could mean the end of her career—or worse, her life.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ This cosy thriller with a neurodivergent, aro-ace MC will keep you turning the pages long after you should have logged into your day job. Oops.

Love CSI and other forensic mysteries? Award-winning and USA Today bestselling author brings you this fresh new nail-biter for your next read.

Join Micah as she picks up her pencils and starts on a new case.

“P. D. Workman has outdone herself with this riveting techno-thriller featuring Micah Miller, a forensic artist specializing in composite renderings based on forensic DNA phenotyping … This book offers plenty of thrills, chills, suspense and white-knuckled tension as the plot unfolds and it kept me turning pages until late into the night. The story is clean and well-written, the plot is fascinating, the pace is relentless and the characters are realistic and relatable. I highly recommend this absorbing and thoroughly enjoyable thriller to anyone who favors CSI, NCIS, Cold Case, Forensic Files or any high-tech inspired crime-solving theme.”

—Kim, Goodreads reviewer

Another of my books that features DNA advances is He Was Not There, which uses genetic genealogy to solve a case. Another of the Zachary Goldman Mysteries, He Drowned in Memory, has one main character discovering biological family members through a DNA test like those done by Ancestry and 23andMe. This technology has become increasingly popular in recent years, with companies like Ancestry and 23andMe offering DNA tests to help people discover their ancestry. In fact, I have helped my son to construct some of his biological family tree using a similar DNA test. It was very exciting for him to learn more about his background. The test confirmed some of the speculations we’d made about his ancestry.

But don’t forget that while DNA can put a perpetrator at the scene of a crime, it can also lead investigators in the wrong direction. What if someone you had contact with transferred some of your DNA to someone who committed a crime, unintentionally leaving your transferred DNA to the scene?

Secondary DNA Transfer and Unsafe Conviction

National DNA Day is a reminder of the incredible impact that DNA has had on our world. From solving crimes to discovering our ancestry, DNA technology has opened up new possibilities and changed our lives in countless ways.
