Nobody is Perfect, Even in a Fictional World

Some readers of the Zachary Goldman Mysteries series have expressed that they find Kenzie to be too perfect and saintly, always caring and understanding at every turn.

But if you read carefully, you’ll find that Kenzie is not without human flaws. She has faults and emotions just like any other (fictional) human being. Reading the Kenzie Kirsch Medical Thrillers series, you get to see her flaws and emotions more clearly. There are a considerable number of times in both the Zachary Goldman Mysteries and Kenzie Kirsch Medical Thriller series when she struggles with restraining her anger and impatience with Zachary, keeps secrets from him, and has other difficulties navigating their complex relationship dynamics. Sometimes she snaps or gives Zachary the silent treatment, shuts herself away in her bedroom or works late at the office to avoid dealing with him. She struggles to find the balance between accommodating Zachary’s disabilities and enabling dysfunctional behavior.

Supporting vs Enabling Kids With Challenges (This article is more about the parent/child relationship, but much of it is applicable to adult relationships as well.)

Living with someone with depression, PTSD, ADHD, or learning disabilities can be exhausting, never mind someone with all of them. It can be isolating and thankless. There are a few pieces of advice on this page that might be helpful if you are in this situation:

Living with a person suffering from mental illness

Kenzie’s background plays a significant role in her character development. Growing up, she fell into the roll of caregiver/nurse to her sister, Amanda. Because of Amanda’s illness, Kenzie’s wants and needs had to be suppressed and everyone’s focus was on taking care of Amanda and seeing to her needs. Kenzie’s learned behavior, to put others’ needs before her own, has carried through to adulthood. Since Kenzie had a gift for understanding medicine, her mother relied on her to help take care of Amanda and act as a translator between her parents and the doctors. It is difficult for Kenzie to pull back from the role of mother or doctor to Zachary and treat him as an equal partner. She often steps over the line or pushes her opinion too far about how he should be taking care of himself or behaving.

It irritates Zachary to be told how to take care of himself or have someone else act as if they know better than he does what his own needs are, but he also craves having someone take care of him. Kenzie stepped way over the line in He Was Not There when she went to both Lorne and Bridget about Zachary’s dissociation and possible sexual abuse in the past, rather than waiting until he was ready to talk about it, and they broke up because of this for a time. They also broke up in She Wore Mourning when she realized that he had been tracking her movements. It has not been a smooth road.

In Rushin’ Death, you’ll find that throughout the Zachary Goldman books 11-13, Kenzie is keeping some pretty big secrets from Zachary. Just as they only had clues of what was going on with Tyrrell’s mental health/alcoholism during their stay at the Lodge in Dosed to Death, there are things going on in Kenzie’s life during this time period that Zachary can only catch glimpses of, if he’s really paying attention.

But it is all about to come out.

Bitter Paradise by Ross Pennie is the fifth installment of his A Dr. Zol Szabo Medical Mystery series, and it is a thrilling read for anyone who enjoys medical mysteries and viral outbreak tropes. It is the first one I have read, but wouldn’t hesitate to pick up any of the others. Good cast of characters, easy to read, with enough backstory to understand what is going on. Following the story of Dr. Zed’s son and his friend as well as their virus-hunting parents, this book can be enjoyed by readers of both young adult and adult age groups. And best of all, of course, it is set in Canada. Nice to see a Canadian setting.

Pennie takes the reader on an intriguing journey as he lays down plenty of rabbit trails/red herrings for them to follow with enough clues along the way to keep them engaged. With lots of twists and turns, Bitter Paradise challenges the reader to try to solve the mystery even as they become engrossed in it. It’s a great read and a challenging mystery with lots of twists and turns.

Oh, and let’s not forget a neurodivergent main character and a terrorist/organized crime subplot as well, just to keep things interesting! This one hits all of the buttons for me.

Ross Pennie, Bitter Paradise

Summary

After weeks of torture at the hands of Syria’s secret police, the bombing of his villa in the ancient city of Aleppo, and the murder of his daughter, trauma surgeon Dr. Hosam Khousa flees his fractured homeland with his wife and son. Blast from the past!

Spring equinox was supposed to be a fun time in Black Sands.

The cold reception Kenzie got from the stranger when she arrived at her mother’s house on Christmas day was nothing compared to what he got when he arrived at her morgue.

The anomalies in the Christmas rush at the Medical Examiner’s Office have Kenzie and Dr. Wiltshire scratching their heads. But things are about to get a lot more personal.

Lisa Cole Kirsch claims to know nothing about what is going on, but is she telling the truth? Even more concerning, is she covering up for her ex-husband? Kenzie would ask her father if he was around, but his presence was apparently required elsewhere. She’s never known him to be unreachable for so long before.

Kenzie is glad that her father is not involved in anything shady. She’s just seeing specters where there aren’t any. But her relief is short-lived.

P.D. Workman is one of my favorite authors and can always be depended on to deliver a good solid read. I enjoyed this book and am looking forward to the next in the series.

What an excellent story. This one kept me wondering what was happening with Kenzie’s dad. So much going on.

Follow the Clues in Archer Mayor’s Exciting “Fall Guy”

I have just started this one today, so I can’t tell you a whole lot about it yet. Archer Mayor’s Fall Guy is a well-written police procedural suspense mystery novel that is sure to keep readers on the edge of their seats. The story takes place in the small town of Brattleboro, Vermont, and follows the multi-jurisdictional case of a large-scale heist. Mayor does an excellent job of providing realistic detail in how the case is handled, from the leads and clues being chased down by investigators to the intimate relationships between members of a small police department.

The characters are well-rounded and feel like real people who are not just cookie cutters or well-worn tropes. They are like family to each other and provide a “cozy” vibe in contrast to the suspenseful plot line. Mayor also does an excellent job of incorporating Vermont’s history and scenery into the novel. Definitely a series that I would read more of.

Summary

In Archer Mayor’s Fall Guy, a body found in the trunk of a stolen car leads Joe Gunther and his team to crucial evidence in an infamous unsolved case from years past.

A high-end stolen car is discovered in Vermont. A car filled with stolen items from a far-flung two state burglary spree. But it’s what is in the trunk that brings Joe Gunther and his team from the Vermont Bureau of Investigation. In the trunk is the body of burglar in question – one Don Kalfus. Complicating matters, while the body was found in Vermont, it appears he was probably killed in the next state over, New Hampshire.

The task force charged with finding out why Kalfus is murdered soon faces another problem. Within the pile of stolen cell phones found in the car is evidence of a notorious unsolved child abduction case from years earlier.

Now the seemingly simple case has become more complicated and deadly, leading Gunther’s team to be pulled from the New Hampshire coast to near the Canadian border as they attempt to find and capture the psychopath responsible for a tangled, historical web of misery, betrayal, and loss.

Championing Equality: The Power of Books, Ebooks, and Authors

March 8 is International Women’s Day, a global celebration of the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. The portrayal of Justine felt very true to me. I had a troubled childhood and youth myself and I really identified with Justine’s feelings, words, and actions. Some of the things Justine said and did were things I said and did when I was her age. The characters felt very three-dimensional and real. The story pulled me in and I just had to know how it ended! I swayed back and forth in my opinions about all the characters and was very satisfied with how everything played out in the end.
