Awareness is increasing about medical kidnap, the practice of children being apprehended from their parents due to medical conditions. It is happening far more often than you would like to think. 

This fiction series is about the children who fall victim to this practice, their families, and a small group of teens who are fighting back! 

Follow Gabriel and Renata as they fight against an unfair and corrupt system, trying to save themselves and others from doctors, social workers, and judges who are more interested in profit than justice and the safety of their charges.

The plot was FANTASTIC. I’ve read a lot of stories about foster children, but never anything quite like what happens in Mito. I never even realized that medical kidnap could very well be a thing happening “behind the scenes” in foster care, but after reading this book my mind is blown. I just. Wow. I don’t want to go into a whole lot of detail so I think I might stop this review here, but, gah. I can’t even form words I’m so freaking mind blown.

Unraveling Secrets: To Knit a Murder

Back to School blues? Get lost in teen stories this back-to-school season! Unwind and escape the stress with these captivating reads.

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme. Read the rules and more teasers at The Purple Booker. Anyone can play along.

How To Knit a Murder, by Sally Goldenbaum, is book 2 in the Seaside Knitters Society cozy mystery series. I haven’t read book number 1, but have been able to follow the characters and story pretty well.

I have just gotten to the murder, and things are not looking so great for Rose Chopra and a few other characters in the book. The suspicions are being slowly built up. The reader is led to believe that Rose is not the murderer, but as we only saw her before and after the murder scene, we can’t be sure. Unless she is an unreliable narrator, she should be in the clear.

Rose’s backstory is being gradually revealed, but we don’t have the full story yet or everything that happened between her and the murder victim in the past.

This crafty cozy mystery makes a good palate cleanser after some of the grittier books I have read lately. It immerses you in the imaginary town of Sea Harbor, Massachusetts, creating a sense of warmth and community.

Teen Stories That Will Transport You!

The portrayal of Justine felt very true to me. I had a troubled childhood and youth myself and I really identified with Justine’s feelings, words, and actions. Some of the things Justine said and did were things I said and did when I was her age. The characters felt very three-dimensional and real. The story pulled me in and I just had to know how it ended! I swayed back and forth in my opinions about all the characters and was very satisfied with how everything played out in the end.

I’m a sucker for Linda Castillo’s Kate Burkholder Amish mysteries. I love the way she weaves the Amish life and traditions with the intricate threads of suspense and crime. I’m sure that Castillo probably met resistance to the idea of mixing the pacifistic Amish with murder and crime when she first floated the idea of the series.

I’ll tell you, she really beats Kate Burkholder up in The Hidden One! That poor woman!

However, despite all the trials and tribulations that Burkholder faces, there’s always an underlying certainty that she will rise above it all in the end. As readers, we have come to know her as a strong-willed and tenacious character who refuses to back down.

Sensational Stories and Tempting Treats
