The NA Genre: What’s Wrong with It?

NA Genre

NA stands for New Adult, featuring, for the most part, main characters that are college-aged. There are few NA books out there that aren’t set in *gasp* a college setting. And what do we have? Loads and loads of generic, bland stories.

Why? Why do I shame the NA genre so much? Isn’t YA full of used tropes and disastrous things too? Yes, it is, it is. Don’t get your panties in a twist. I don’t deny it.

Shallow when it Should be the Opposite

But it’s also true that if you really take a look a...

Digging Deeper: Quintana of Charyn and Theme

Quintana of Charyn

Movies and Books differ in many things, but one of the most important similarities, is the story’s ability to deliver a message.

Now, how that message is delivered is the issue here. Focusing on books, it can be preachy, like in Halo, by Alexandra Adornetto; non-existent, like in Second Star (Honestly I still don’t get that book), or negative *cough* Since Forever Ago *cough*.

None of those sound like fun, right?

Quintana of CharynI know I didn’t write a review for Quintana of Charyn, by Melina Marchetta, but...

My Favorite Disney Princesses

princesses

My Favorite Disney Princesses

In light of the new Cinderella movie, which I’m very excited about, I decided to talk about my favorite disney princesses. They certainly have evolved a lot from the stereotypical damsel-in-distress type to princesses that don’t need any prince at all. We all have our favorite, and here are mine:

Mulan

Mulan

She’s my top favorite because of her utter badass-ness. Yup. This girl lived in a society where women were only considered useful for house chores and siring ch...

Review: Red Queen, by Victoria Aveyard

The poverty stricken Reds are commoners, living under the rule of the Silvers, elite warriors with god-like powers.

To Mare Barrow, a 17-year-old Red girl from The Stilts, it looks like nothing will ever change.

Mare finds herself working in the Silver Palace, at the centre of
those she hates the most. She quickly discovers that, despite her red blood, she possesses a deadly power of her own. One that threatens to destroy Silver control.

But power is a dangerous game. And in this world divi...

The Book Hangover Effect: Sequels

I’m sure I can’t be the only one who has ever felt torn between reading a book that has a sequel or waiting until all the books are out. When it comes to those, for me it’s very simple.

I can’t help but read the first one.

Really, I don’t know if it’s a new kind of evil masochism but I never can’t seem to keep from reading a book if the opportunity presents itself, even if the next one doesn’t come out in until 1+ year. I know, I know, I may just be torturing myself.

Of course, in most cases...

Review: Don’t Touch, by Rachel M. Wilson

A powerful story of a girl who is afraid to touch another person’s skin, until the boy auditioning for Hamlet opposite her Ophelia gives her a reason to overcome her fears.

Step on a crack, break your mother’s back. Touch another person’s skin, and Dad’s gone for good.

Caddie can’t stop thinking that if she keeps from touching another person’s skin, her parents might get back together… which is why she wears full-length gloves to school and covers every inch of her skin.

It seems harmless at...

My Month in Movies: March Edition

mmm

A new round of movies!

1. Cinderella

Cinderella

I’d been watching a lot of advertisement for this movie, and the actors, and producers kept going on and on about how they wanted to capture the original magic from the animated classic, and I would be like,

Oh-really-Tell-me-more-

But, it turns out, I quite enjoyed this adaptation. I particularly liked the fact that Ella and the prince meet before the ball takes place, so it isn’tthatinsta-lovey. It didn’t let me down at all.

2. Les Choristes LES CHORISTES (2003)

My sister finally convinced...

Ecuador At a Glance: Trip to Salinas

ecuador Trip to Salinas

It’s been almost a year since I last went to the beach, but my mom, ever so awesome, suggested we go for a one-day trip, and I took some pics of the beach for your visual enjoyement. :3

Salinas is a beach located in the Santa Elena province; very, very west in Ecuador. Seafood is the rule, and there’re more than one little nooks that serve the most incredible dishes.

Ha pasado casi un año desde que fui a la playa por última vez, pero mi mamá, como siempre tan increíble, sugir...

Froi of the Exiles

Blood sings to blood, Froi . . .
Those born last will make the first . . .
For Charyn will be barren no more.

Three years after the curse on Lumatere was lifted, Froi has found his home… Or so he believes…

Fiercely loyal to the Queen and Finnikin, Froi has been trained roughly and lovingly by the Guard sworn to protect the royal family, and has learned to control his quick temper. But when he is sent on a secretive mission to the kingdom of Charyn, nothing could have prepared him for what h...
