How to Take Every Thought Captive

“Letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death. But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace.”

Romans 8:6 (NLT)

Have you noticed your mind doesn’t always do what you tell it to do?

Sometimes your mind has a mind of its own. Sometimes your thoughts go off in directions that you don’t intend. When you need to pray, your thoughts stray. When you want to ponder God’s Word, your thoughts want to wander.

The Bible says, when this happens, you need to take every thought captive (2 Corinthians 10:5). What does that mean? The Greek word used in that verse literally means you take thoughts prisoner. You conquer them. You bring them under control.

That’s only possible when you use the two weapons every believer has available to them: the Holy Spirit and the Word of God.

First, you need to recognize the power of God’s Spirit inside you. Without him, you are defenseless. Romans 8:6 says, “Letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death. But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace” (NLT).

You need Jesus in your life because, without the Holy Spirit, your sinful nature controls your mind and will always lead you in the wrong direction. But when the Spirit controls you, you have the power you need to take every thought captive.

Second, you need the Word of God. Jesus says, “If you obey my teaching, you are really my disciples; you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (John 8:31-32 GNT).

People like to quote the second part of that passage. In fact, it’s posted on university buildings all over the world. But very few people quote the first part, where it says you have to learn and obey God’s Word. People want the freedom without God’s truth.

In reality, there is no freedom without truth. And there is no truth without God’s Word. God has given you the direction you need for life, and you can trust every word the Bible says. The more you get to know God’s Word and fill your mind with his truth, the easier it will be to direct your thoughts where you want them to go.

Adora a Través de tu Ofrenda

“Honra al Señor con tus riquezas y con los primeros frutos de tus cosechas”. Proverbios 3:9 (NVI)

Cuando era niño, solía comprar o hacer pequeños regalos para mis padres. Cada vez que les daba un regalo a mis padres, estaban encantados. No era como si necesitaran algo de mí; no lo necesitaban. Simplemente disfrutaron el hecho de que pensé en ellos.

Tenía ocho años cuando entré en una tienda de segunda mano y le compré un vestido a mi madre por 25 centavos. Pensé que era un vestido genial. Era como una talla cuatro, y mi mamá era una talla 12. El empleado dijo: “Ricky, tu mamá no podría meter el dedo gordo del pie en este vestido”. Me ofendí mucho y me fui a casa llorando. Cuando le regalé el vestido a mi mamá, ella estaba muy emocionada. Y cuando ella murió, encontré ese vestido en uno de sus cofres. Lo había guardado todos esos años.

No hay nada que puedas darle a Dios que Él necesite. Pero cuando le das una ofrenda, estás diciendo: “Dios, te amo. Mi corazón piensa en ti. Eres la prioridad en mi vida”.

La Biblia dice: “Honra al Señor con tus riquezas y con los primeros frutos de tus cosechas” Proverbios 3:9 (NVI). Eso se llama diezmar. La Biblia dice que el diezmo es el 10 por ciento de lo que ganas, y es lo primero que debes hacer con tus ingresos.

Diezmar no solo honra a Dios. También es un acto de adoración. Pero la Biblia dice que no todo dar es un acto de adoración. Entonces, ¿qué tipo de dar es adoración?

La Biblia dice: “El primer día de la semana, cada uno de ustedes aparte y guarde algún dinero conforme a sus ingresos” 1 Corintios 16:2 (NVI).

La ofrenda de adoración no está designada. Eso significa que no lo controlas, no lo diriges y no le dices a Dios qué hacer.

La ofrenda de adoración se da donde adoras. Es genial dar a organizaciones benéficas o amigos necesitados, pero eso no es adoración a través del diezmo. Tu ofrenda de adoración va a tu iglesia local.

La ofrenda de adoración está planificada. No solo das espontáneamente. Oras al respecto.

La ofrenda de adoración es proporcional. Si no ganaste nada esa semana, no das nada. Ganas un poco, das un poco. Ganas mucho, das mucho.

En última instancia, Dios no quiere tu dinero. Quiere lo que representa tu dinero. El nervio más sensible del cuerpo es el que va del corazón a la billetera. Dios quiere tu corazón más que cualquier otra cosa.

Just a Nibble of Sin Will Get You Hooked

“Temptation comes from our own desires, which entice us and drag us away.”

James 1:14 (NLT)

For my dad, a day without fishing was a wasted day. He would manage, no matter what was going on, to go fishing for at least 30 minutes every day. As I watched my dad catch fish after fish (while I caught nothing), I learned really quickly that no fish will bite a bare hook.

You can’t just throw a hook out in the water and expect to catch fish. You have to put bait on the hook, and a good fisherman knows that different fish like different kinds of bait.

Just like a fisherman knows how to bait different kinds of fish, Satan knows just how to bait you. He knows your favorite flavors and what gets your attention. He knows exactly where your weak spot is—that unmet emotional need, that empty tank, that deep desire.

That’s why you’ve got to think about what you’re thinking about. The hook is sin, but the bait is whatever lie Satan wants you to believe. He knows you’re vulnerable to ideas like: If you do this, you’ll feel better. If you do this, it will be rewarding. If you do this, everything will be okay.

Even when you know there’s a hook beneath the bait, you may still keep nibbling. Why? Because you buy whatever lie Satan is feeding you. But if you think you can keep nibbling without getting hooked, you’re just fooling yourself. The idea that you won’t get hurt is another one of Satan’s lies.

One of the most common lies is this: Whenever you’re tempted, something outside of yourself has tempted you.

But here’s the truth: The real problem is not external.

James 1:14 says, “Temptation comes from our own desires, which entice us and drag us away” (NLT).

Temptation starts with our inner desires—those vulnerable spots Satan uses for bait. Those desires lead to sinful actions, and those actions lead to death. What you think determines how you feel, and what you feel determines how you act.

Don’t get in the habit of blaming your circumstances. When you’re tempted, you may think you can’t help it. You can help it! It starts by changing the way you think.

When you’re tempted, stop and ask the question, “What lie am I believing?”

Then replace it with God’s truth. It will always lead to life.

Talk It Over

What lies do you think Satan knows you’re vulnerable to?
When was a time you thought you could control yourself when you “nibbled” at temptation? What was the result?
How can you remind yourself of God’s truth when you’re tempted?

God loves you, no matter what you’ve done.

Because we’re human, we’ve taken Satan’s bait and been hooked into sin more times than we can count. But no matter what you’ve done or where you’ve been, you’ve got a place in God’s forever family ready and waiting for you. The invitation is wide open. Just believe and receive.

Are you ready? Here’s a prayer you can start with: “Dear God, I know that when I die I’m going to give an account of my life to you directly. I confess I have ignored you. I know I have sinned against you, and I have lived by my plan, not yours. I want that to change, starting right now. I want to turn away from my sins and turn toward you.

“Thank you for sending Jesus to die for all that I’ve done wrong so I don’t have to pay the penalty. I know I don’t deserve your forgiveness. I know only your grace can save me, Lord.

“Jesus, thank you for loving me so much that you took all my guilt on yourself. You made me acceptable for heaven, and I humbly ask you to save me. I ask you to save me from the sins and the habits that are messing up my life right now. I believe in you, Jesus. And I believe you will keep your promise to save me instantly, certainly, completely, and eternally. In Jesus’ name. Amen.”

Todo Cristiano es un Ministro

“Porque somos hechura de Dios, creados en Cristo Jesús para buenas obras, las cuales Dios dispuso de antemano a fin de que las pongamos en práctica”. Efesios 2:10 (NVI)

Dios no te puso en la Tierra solo para vivir para ti mismo. ¡Él quiere que hagas del mundo un lugar mejor!

Efesios 2:10 dice: “Porque somos hechura de Dios, creados en Cristo Jesús para buenas obras, las cuales Dios dispuso de antemano a fin de que las pongamos en práctica” (NVI).

Hay una palabra para este tipo de vida: ministerio. Todo cristiano es un ministro. No todo cristiano es pastor, pero todo cristiano es un ministro. Eso significa que usas tus talentos y dones para hacer una contribución en la vida: ser un dador, no alguien que solo recibe.

La Biblia instruye: Ámense unos a los otros. Cuídense unos a los otros. Oren unos por los otros. Anímense unos a los otros. Ayúdense unos a los otros. Aconséjense unos a los otros. Apóyense unos a los otros. Y así sucesivamente. Es el ministerio mutuo de cada creyente en la familia de Dios a cada otro creyente en la familia de Dios. Esa es la manera en que Dios quiso que fuera.

La verdad es que servir a Dios sirviendo a los demás no siempre es fácil. A veces te desanimarás. Entonces, ¿qué haces cuando empiezas a desanimarte? Recuerda dos cosas.

Primero, recuerda la recompensa que recibirás que durará por la eternidad. La Biblia dice, “Pues Dios no es injusto. No olvidará con cuánto esfuerzo han trabajado para él y cómo han demostrado su amor por él sirviendo a otros creyentes como todavía lo hacen” Hebreos 6:10 (NTV). Él te recompensará en la Eternidad.

Lo segundo que debes recordar es que Dios usa cada pequeña cosa que sucede en tu vida. Nada es insignificante cuando le sirves a Dios. Nada de lo que hagas es en vano. “Permanezcan fuertes y constantes. Trabajen siempre para el Señor con entusiasmo, porque ustedes saben que nada de lo que hacen para el Señor es inútil” 1 Corintios 15:58 (NTV).

No pierdas todo el sentido de tu vida. ¡Comienza a cumplir tu propósito viviendo una vida de ministerio hoy!

You Need to Think About What You Think About

“Fools will believe anything, but the wise think about what they do.”

Proverbs 14:15 (NCV)

Every behavior is based on a belief.

If you act scared, it’s because you believe scary thoughts at that moment. If you act resentful, it’s because you believe you’ve been devalued, and so you’re going to defend yourself. If you’re acting prideful, it may be because you believe you’re not good enough, so you’re trying to compensate by being boastful.

If there is a behavior in your life you don’t like, go to the source and change the thought behind it. God says in Haggai 1:5, “Carefully consider your ways!” (GW).

Ask yourself: Why do I act that way with this person? Why do I act this way at work or school? Why do I act this way with certain neighbors? What thought triggered that response? What assumption is behind that action? What belief is beneath that behavior?

Have you ever been in this kind of conflict with your spouse or significant other: It starts off simple enough—but before you know it, something in the argument triggers your emotions, and you go from zero to 100 in emotional intensity in two seconds? Then you’re out of control, upset, nervous, or fearful. You may start sweating, or your voice may rise. Maybe tears start coming down your cheeks.

Something in that moment tapped into an unspoken belief. You may believe the other person is going to leave you. You may believe you haven’t been heard. You may believe your idea isn’t being given validation and you’re not being treated with respect. You believe something that suddenly triggered an emotional response.

If you’re ever in a situation like that, you need to ask this question: What am I believing right now? You need to examine the beliefs beneath your behavior.

The Bible says in Proverbs 14:15, “Fools will believe anything, but the wise think about what they do” (NCV).

To grow in any area of life, examine what’s going on in your mind. Start thinking about what you’re thinking about so your thoughts can lead to healthy, purposeful action.

La Familia de Dios te Ayuda a Crecer

“Por su acción todo el cuerpo crece y se edifica en amor, sostenido y ajustado por todos los ligamentos, según la actividad propia de cada miembro”. Efesios 4:16 (NVI)

Dios no quiere que sigas siendo un bebé espiritual. Él quiere que seas como Cristo. Él quiere que crezcas.

Pero aquí está el truco: no puedes hacerlo por tu cuenta. Los bebés no solo crecen solos. Necesitan una familia de algún tipo. Y necesitas una familia espiritual, al igual que necesitabas a alguien que te ayudara a crecer cuando eras joven físicamente.

La Biblia dice: “Por su acción todo el cuerpo crece y se edifica en amor, sostenido y ajustado por todos los ligamentos, según la actividad propia de cada miembro” Efesios 4:16 (NVI).

Mi trabajo como pastor es asegurarme de que la gente de mi iglesia crezca. Es el trabajo de todos nuestros pastores, líderes, maestros de estudios bíblicos y líderes de grupos pequeños. De hecho, la Biblia dice esto acerca de tales personas: “A fin de capacitar al pueblo de Dios para la obra de servicio, para edificar el cuerpo de Cristo. De este modo, todos llegaremos a la unidad de la fe y del conocimiento del Hijo de Dios, a una humanidad perfecta que se conforme a la plena estatura de Cristo” Efesios 4:12-13 (NVI). En la iglesia de Saddleback, siempre preguntamos: “Señor Jesús, ¿cómo podemos ayudarlos a crecer?”.

La Biblia tiene una palabra para este tipo de crecimiento. Se llama discipulado. El discipulado es el proceso de crecimiento de un bebé espiritual a un adulto espiritual. Significa que estás madurando en tu fe. Te estás volviendo más fuerte. Estás desarrollando algo de músculo.

Entonces, ¿cómo puedes crecer como discípulo?

La Biblia dice en Hechos 2 cómo crecían las personas en la primera iglesia: “Así, pues, los que recibieron su mensaje fueron bautizados, y aquel día se unieron a la iglesia unas tres mil personas. Se mantenían firmes en la enseñanza de los apóstoles, en la comunión, en el partimiento del pan y en la oración” Hechos 2:41-42 (NVI).

Ese capítulo más adelante continúa diciendo: “No dejaban de reunirse en el templo ni un solo día. De casa en casa partían el pan y compartían la comida con alegría y generosidad” Hechos 2:46 (NVI).

Primero, crees. Entonces te bautizas. Y es importante que elijas una familia de la iglesia y participes en la adoración de grupos grandes y en el compañerismo de grupos pequeños.

Aprende de tus líderes en la iglesia. Aprende de tus compañeros. Comprométete a crecer espiritualmente como discípulo y miembro del cuerpo de Cristo.

How We Learn from Pain

“God teaches people through suffering and uses distress to open their eyes.”

Job 36:15 (GNT)

There are some things we only learn through pain—and sometimes it’s through the pain of other people.

It’s wise to learn from your own experiences, but it’s wiser to learn from the experiences of others—and to let others learn from your pain. You don’t have time to make all the mistakes yourself! That’s why it’s important to learn from each other’s mistakes—but only if we are honest about how God uses pain to get our attention and teach us lessons.

Job 36:15 says, “God teaches people through suffering and uses distress to open their eyes” (GNT).

What does God want you to understand about the distress you’re going through right now? What are you learning? Once you’ve learned it, he wants you to pass those lessons on to others.

We all go through different kinds of trouble. But no matter what your specific pain is, God wants you to learn these three things from it:

First, you learn to depend more on God through your pain. God wants to teach you about himself—about his power through your weakness, his love when you feel unlovely, his grace when you feel unforgiven, and his wisdom when you don’t know which way to turn.

Second, you learn to trust and obey God’s Word when you’re in pain. It’s easy to trust God when things are going great. It’s not so easy when things are going bad.

King David said in Psalm 119:67, “Before I was afflicted I went astray, but now I obey your word” (NIV). Lessons learned through failure and painful mistakes will drive you to claim and trust in God’s promises. His Word provides hope that he is with you and has not stopped working for you and in you.

Third, you learn through pain that you need other people. If you never had any pain in your life, you wouldn’t think you needed anybody. It’s only in pain that some people admit that they need others to help them. Pain is one of the most powerful reminders that you’re not meant to go through life alone.

If you’re going through pain right now, trust that what God is teaching you will be helpful to others as you pass the lessons on to friends, family, and even future generations.

No Estás Solo; Eres Parte de una Familia

“Formamos un solo cuerpo en Cristo, y cada miembro está unido a todos los demás”. Romanos 12:5 (NVI)

La iglesia no solo te ayuda a centrar tu vida en Dios, sino que también te ayuda a conectarte con otros creyentes.

Dios no te puso aquí para vivir una vida aislada. Mientras estés en la Tierra, Dios quiere que aprendas a amar a otras personas, y quiere que practiques amar a otros en su familia. La Biblia dice: “Formamos un solo cuerpo en Cristo, y cada miembro está unido a todos los demás” Romanos 12:5 (NVI).

Cuando te conviertes en un hijo de Dios, estás conectado con otros creyentes como su hermano o hermana. La Biblia dice que eres parte de un cuerpo. ¿Qué es este cuerpo?

Tu vida espiritual no vale nada si está desconectada de la familia de Dios. Si me corto el dedo, no solo dejará de crecer, sino que también morirá. Para que mi dedo viva, tiene que estar conectado a mi cuerpo. De la misma manera, necesitas estar conectado con otras personas en el cuerpo de Cristo si quieres crecer espiritualmente y cumplir el propósito de Dios para tu vida.

Un estudio sobre salud mental reveló que, si te aíslas de los demás y no desarrollas amistades cercanas, como las de un grupo pequeño, tienes tres veces más probabilidades de morir prematuramente. Tienes cuatro veces más probabilidades de sufrir agotamiento emocional. Tienes cinco veces más probabilidades de estar clínicamente deprimido. Y tienes 10 veces más probabilidades de ser hospitalizado por un trastorno emocional o mental.

Durante los últimos años, cuando a veces ha sido necesario aislarse físicamente, las personas han aprendido a conectarse de muchas formas creativas.

Cualquiera que sea la situación en la que te encuentres hoy, encuentra maneras de conectarte con otros creyentes. Forma parte de la familia de Dios. Únete a un grupo pequeño. Conéctate. Como dice Efesios 2:19: “Por lo tanto, ustedes ya no son extraños ni extranjeros, sino conciudadanos del pueblo elegido y miembros de la familia de Dios” (NVI).

Reflexiona sobre esto:

¿Por qué crees que Dios quiere que practiques amar a otros creyentes aquí en la Tierra? ¿Para qué sirve la práctica?¿Cómo cambia el significado de tu vida cuando entiendes que eres parte del cuerpo de Cristo?¿Cómo has crecido espiritualmente desde que te conectaste al cuerpo de Cristo?

Dios te Quiere en su Familia

Dios te hizo para amarte, y uno de los lugares que más claramente ves Su amor es en la cruz. A través de la muerte y resurrección de Jesús, Dios hizo posible que seas parte de su familia por la eternidad. No importa lo que hayas hecho o dónde hayas estado, tienes un lugar listo y esperándote en la familia eterna de Dios. La invitación está abierta. Solo tienes que creerlo y recibirlo.

You Don’t Always Need Sunshine to Grow

“When your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing.”

James 1:3-4 (NLT)

It’s possible to grow during times of bright, fair weather—but you put down deeper roots during the dark days of life.

As a pastor, I heard from countless people who said they had grown more through separation, illness, job loss, or tragedy than they would have otherwise. They recognized how God had used difficulty to draw them closer to him and mature them.

The Bible says it this way: “When your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing” (James 1:3-4 NLT).

When you let God into your problems and don’t push him out, then you’ll develop endurance that will make you ready for anything—strong in character, full and complete.

Pain is the high cost of growth. The old cliché is true: There is no gain without pain. We want the quick solution and the easy fix. We want the pill or the seminar or the book that’s going to change everything without pain. We want the product that brings maturity without the painful process. But that isn’t going to happen!

Theologian J. I. Packer said, “God uses chronic pain and weakness, along with all the other inflictions, as his chisel for sculpting our lives. It deepens our dependence upon Christ for strength each day. And the weaker we feel, the harder we lean, and the harder we lean, the stronger we grow spiritually.”

The very thing that’s discouraging you right now is the very thing God is using to develop you right now.

How was David able to write such beautiful and powerful psalms? Because through all the loneliness, neglect, and injustice he went through as a young shepherd and even as a king, David knew God was with him the whole time. David wrote his most beautiful words in his deepest pain.

There will be growth in the painful parts of life that you will not gain any other way. The process will not make you perfect, but it will move you toward being more like Christ. And if you’ll trust God to keep you and walk with you in your pain, he will develop endurance in you and give you his peace and rest.

La Adoración es el Antídoto para la Preocupación

“Sea de una forma u otra, el amor de Cristo nos controla. Ya que creemos que Cristo murió por todos, también creemos que todos hemos muerto a nuestra vida antigua”. 2 Corintios 5:14 (NTV)

Dios te creó para cinco propósitos: adoración, compañerismo, discipulado, ministerio y evangelismo. Pero no puedes cumplir esos propósitos por tu cuenta. La vida no es un acto en solitario. Fuiste creado para la comunidad.

La única forma en que puedes cumplir los cinco propósitos de Dios en tu vida es con personas que te den su opinión espiritual. ¡Necesitas una familia de la iglesia! ¿Por qué? Porque la iglesia te ayuda a centrar tu vida en Dios.

Dios no te puso en la Tierra para vivir una vida egocéntrica. Él quiere estar en el centro de tu vida. Él te hizo para amarte, y quiere que tú lo ames también. En cierto sentido, Dios dice: “Quiero ser el eje de tu corazón. Quiero ser el centro de tu atención. Quiero ser el centro de tu vida. Quiero ser el eje de tu existencia”.

La Biblia dice: “Sea de una forma u otra, el amor de Cristo nos controla. Ya que creemos que Cristo murió por todos, también creemos que todos hemos muerto a nuestra vida antigua” 2 Corintios 5:14 (NTV).

¿Cómo puedes saber que Cristo está en el centro de tu vida? Deja de preocuparte. Filipenses 4:6-7 dice: “No se preocupen por nada; en cambio, oren por todo. Díganle a Dios lo que necesitan y denle gracias por todo lo que él ha hecho. Así experimentarán la paz de Dios, que supera todo lo que podemos entender. La paz de Dios cuidará su corazón y su mente mientras vivan en Cristo Jesús” (NTV).

Hay una palabra para esto: adoración. Cuando enfocas tu vida en Dios, adoras. Y la adoración es el antídoto para la preocupación. Si quieres preocuparte menos, adora más.

¿Cuándo se supone que debes adorar? La Biblia dice: “Trabajarán ustedes durante seis días, pero el séptimo día es de completo reposo; es un día de asamblea sagrada en mi honor, en el que no harán ningún trabajo. Dondequiera que ustedes vivan, será sábado consagrado al Señor” Levítico 23:3 (NVI). Una vez a la semana, Dios quiere que te reúnas con otros creyentes para reenfocar, recalibrar y volver a centrar tu vida en Él.

¿Dónde se supone que debes hacerlo? Hechos 2:46 dice: “No dejaban de reunirse en el templo ni un solo día” (NTV).

¿Puedes ver que Dios quiso que fueras parte de una familia de la iglesia? Una familia de la iglesia te ayuda a enfocar y centrar tu vida en Dios para que puedas cumplir tu propósito en tu vida.

Reflexiona sobre esto:

¿Qué es algo que te ha preocupado? ¿Cómo puedes convertir esa preocupación en adoración hoy?¿Cómo crees que cambiaría tu vida si le entregaras todas tus preocupaciones a Jesús y le permitieras ser el centro de tu vida?En términos prácticos, ¿qué puede hacer una familia de la iglesia para ayudarte a reenfocar tu vida en Dios?

 

Dios te creó para amarte, y uno de los lugares que más claramente lo ves es en la cruz.

A través de la muerte y resurrección de Jesús, Dios hizo posible que seas parte de su familia por la eternidad. No importa lo que hayas hecho o dónde hayas estado, tienes un lugar listo y esperándote en la familia eterna de Dios. La invitación está abierta. Solo tienes que creerlo y recibirlo.

¿Estás listo? Aquí hay una oración con la que puedes comenzar:
