It’s Not a Sin to Be Tempted

“So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.”

Hebrews 4:16 (NLT)

Being on a broken planet means you will never outgrow temptation. But it’s important to remember that it’s not a sin to be tempted. It’s a sin to give in to temptations. You’re not a bad Christian because you have persistent temptations in your life. You’re human!

You’re not responsible for the thoughts Satan puts in your mind from a thousand different stimuli. But you are responsible for what you do with them. You can choose not to dwell on a thought. You change your mind! You choose to think of something different. Then, you have not sinned because you didn’t act on your temptation.

Martin Luther said, “You can’t keep the birds from flying over your head, but you can keep them from making a nest in your hair.” If you have a bad thought, don’t be intimidated by it. Don’t beat yourself up. That’s what Satan wants you to do, because the more you get down on yourself, the more he can manipulate those negative emotions and lead you to sin. A thought is only a temptation. It’s your choice whether it turns into a sin.

You’re going to be tempted the rest of your life. Even the oldest, most mature Christian in the world is still tempted. The mature Christian knows that the closer you get to God, the more Satan will throw at you, hoping something will stick. But the closer you get to God, the better prepared you are to face whatever Satan throws at you and to resist him.

Don’t be intimidated by Satan. As a Christian, you’ve got the Holy Spirit’s power in you. You’ve got God’s Word to give you truth. You’ve got Jesus to cry out to. You’ve got everything you need to overcome your temptations!

Por qué Dios a veces dice “Todavía No”

“Perseverar con paciencia es lo que necesitan ahora para seguir haciendo la voluntad de Dios. Entonces recibirán todo lo que él ha prometido. «Pues, dentro de muy poco tiempo, Aquel que viene vendrá sin demorarse”. Hebreos 10:36-37 (NTV)

Si estás desanimado por la demora de Dios en responder a tus oraciones, comprende que la demora no es igual a negación. El hecho de que la respuesta o el milagro no haya llegado todavía no significa que Dios no vaya a responder, o que te haya olvidado o que no le importes. ¡Simplemente significa “todavía no”!

Parte de madurar espiritualmente es aprender la diferencia entre “no” y “todavía no”, entre una negación y una demora. La Biblia nos dice: “Aquel que viene vendrá sin demorarse” Hebreos 10:37 (NTV).

La demora de Dios puede ser una prueba para tu paciencia. Cualquiera puede ser paciente una vez. Y la mayoría de las personas pueden ser pacientes dos o incluso tres veces. Dios prueba tu paciencia una y otra vez.

¿Hace esto para ver qué tan paciente eres? No. Dios lo hace para que veas lo paciente que eres. Sus pruebas te ayudan a ver el poder de Dios obrando en ti y a determinar tu nivel de compromiso con Él.

Dios también te prueba a ti para que puedas saber que Él es fiel, incluso si las respuestas que buscas se demoran.

Es posible que estés pasando por momentos difíciles en este momento. Es posible que te sientas desanimado porque la situación que enfrentas parece inmanejable, irrazonable o injusta.

Puede parecer insoportable, y por dentro básicamente estás diciendo: “Dios, no puedo soportarlo más. ¡Simplemente no puedo soportarlo más!”.

Pero tú si puedes.

Puedes aguantar un poco más de tiempo porque Dios está contigo. Él te equipará para seguir adelante.

Recuerda, nunca eres un fracaso hasta que te rindes. Resiste ante el desánimo, y termina la carrera que Dios te ha puesto por delante.

Reflexiona sobre esto:

¿Hay alguna petición que has asumido que Dios ha respondido con un “no”? ¿Es posible que su respuesta realmente sea “todavía no”? ¿Cómo cambia eso tu visión de la situación?¿Qué crees que Dios quiere que hagas en la demora cuando te responde “todavía no”?¿Qué “demora” en tu vida te está desanimando hoy? Piensa en que Dios enseña paciencia durante las demoras. Your Temptation Emergency Kit

“Call on me when you are in trouble, and I will rescue you.”

Psalm 50:15 (NLT)

Sometimes you’re going to need an “emergency kit” for temptation.

When you get in a situation where you’re tempted and you don’t know what to do, you need to cry out to God.

If you’re facing a temptation and you start to panic because you feel the adrenaline running through your body, you can’t have a long conversation with God—and you don’t have to! You can just do what I call a “microwave prayer,” and it’s one word: Help! You tell God, “This is not where I want to be right now, and I’m about to step across the line. I need your help right now.”

God promises, “Call on me when you are in trouble, and I will rescue you” (Psalm 50:15 NLT).

Cry out to God. When you do, you can expect him to help you, because he’s sympathetic to your situation. The Bible says, “This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin” (Hebrews 4:15 NLT).

Did Jesus ever struggle with anger? Yes. Did Jesus ever wrestle with loneliness? Yes. Did Jesus ever deal with sex and sexuality? Yes. Was he ever tempted by fatigue and discouragement? Yes. How? Because he’s God, but he’s God in a fully human body.

Jesus faced the same temptations we do, so we can expect him to help us when we cry out to him. And we don’t have to feel shame. “So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most” (Hebrews 4:16 NLT).

That is a great comfort. And that is the power to change.

Talk It Over

Do you believe God wants to help you resist temptation? Why or why not?
Why do you think God allowed Jesus to experience temptation?
How does God rescue you from temptation when you cry out to him?

God loves you, no matter what you’ve done.

Because we’re human, we’ve taken Satan’s bait and been hooked into sin more times than we can count. But no matter what you’ve done or where you’ve been, you’ve got a place in God’s forever family ready and waiting for you. The invitation is wide open. Just believe and receive.

Are you ready? Here’s a prayer you can start with: “Dear God, I know that when I die I’m going to give an account of my life to you directly. I confess I have ignored you. I know I have sinned against you, and I have lived by my plan, not yours. I want that to change, starting right now. I want to turn away from my sins and turn toward you.

“Thank you for sending Jesus to die for all that I’ve done wrong so I don’t have to pay the penalty. I know I don’t deserve your forgiveness. I know only your grace can save me, Lord.

“Jesus, thank you for loving me so much that you took all my guilt on yourself. You made me acceptable for heaven, and I humbly ask you to save me. I ask you to save me from the sins and the habits that are messing up my life right now. I believe in you, Jesus. And I believe you will keep your promise to save me instantly, certainly, completely, and eternally. In Jesus’ name. Amen.”

Qué Hacer Cuando Nada Tiene Sentido

“«Sé que todo lo puedes, y que nadie puede detenerte. Tú preguntaste: “¿Quién es este que pone en duda mi sabiduría con tanta ignorancia?”. Soy yo y hablaba de cosas sobre las que no sabía nada, cosas demasiado maravillosas para mí… Me retracto de todo lo que dije, y me siento en polvo y ceniza en señal de arrepentimiento»”. Job 42:2-3, 6 (NTV)

En lugar de siempre preguntarle a Dios “por qué” cuando no entiendes, comienza a confiar en Él.

Durante 37 capítulos de su libro, Job pregunta: “¿Por qué me está pasando esto a mí? ¿Por qué permites esto? ¿Por qué tanto dolor? ¿Por qué tanta incomodidad? ¿Por qué no has respondido a mis oraciones?

Pero en el capítulo 38, Job deja de preguntar “por qué”. Y Dios dice: “Ahora me gustaría hacerte algunas preguntas”.

Durante los siguientes dos capítulos, Dios bombardea a Job con preguntas que solo Dios puede responder. Pregunta cosas como: “¿Dónde estabas cuando creé el universo? ¿Puedes explicar la ley de la gravedad?

Después de dos capítulos, Job se da cuenta de que es solo un hombre y que su conocimiento es limitado. ¿Quién es él para cuestionar a Dios?

Job deja de cuestionar y comienza a confiar. Él le responde al Señor: “«Sé que todo lo puedes, y que nadie puede detenerte. Tú preguntaste: “¿Quién es este que pone en duda mi sabiduría con tanta ignorancia?”. Soy yo y hablaba de cosas sobre las que no sabía nada, cosas demasiado maravillosas para mí… Me retracto de todo lo que dije, y me siento en polvo y ceniza en señal de arrepentimiento»” Job 42:2-3, 6 (NTV).

¿Qué haces en una situación en la que no puedes ver la imagen completa, las cosas no están claras y la vida no tiene sentido?

Recuerda las cosas que sabes acerca de Dios. Incluso mientras dudaba, Job afirmó lo que sabía que era verdad acerca de Dios: Dios es amoroso (Job 10:12), Dios es todopoderoso (Job 36:22), Dios tiene el control (Job 34:13), Dios tenía un plan para su vida (Job 23:14), Dios lo protegería (Job 5:11).

No sé por lo que estás pasando en este momento, pero te diré esto: Dios está conscientemente apasionado e interesado en cada detalle. Está prestando atención a cada una de tus respiraciones. Nada se escapa de la atención de Dios.

Puede que no entiendas por lo que estás pasando, pero aún puedes decirle esto a Dios: “Sé que eres bueno. Sé que me estás amando. Sé que eres poderoso. Sé que estás pendiente de los detalles de mi vida. Sé que tienes el control. Sé que tienes un plan. Sé que me protegerás”.

Luego, deja de lado tus preguntas de “por qué” y confía en Dios, pase lo que pase.

What Makes You Vulnerable to Temptation?

“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”

Proverbs 4:23 (NIV)

If you want to be able to fight the persistent temptations in your life, you need to know what makes you vulnerable to Satan’s efforts.

Ephesians 4:27 says, “Do not give the devil a foothold” (NIV). Don’t give Satan a place in your life to start leveraging your weaknesses and get you messed up.

What’s the most common foothold you can give Satan that allows him to push all these temptations? It’s any negative emotion. Anytime you have a negative emotion, you’ve just given Satan a foothold in your life, and you’re going to be more vulnerable than at any other time to temptation. That’s why the Bible says in Proverbs 4:23, “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it” (NIV).

Your heart sits at the center of your emotions. But to defeat temptation, don’t focus on your behavior and what you’re about to do. Instead, identify the thoughts you’re having and the feelings that come out of those thoughts.

That’s how Satan hooks you—not with your behavior but with your thoughts. He plays with your emotions every day of your life. He hooks your feelings. He is a master manipulator of your moods. Satan gets certain emotions stirring by influencing your thoughts and causing you to doubt God’s Word.

Once he’s got you emotionally involved, you’re cooked. When your emotions have kicked in, the behavior is going to happen. Satan knows your negative emotions will lead you to sin. 

You are far more vulnerable to temptation when you’re experiencing negative emotions. Satan knows what they are and will work them for your destruction. Shouldn’t you know what they are too?

The only way you’ll be able to fight any persistent temptation in your life is to identify the emotions that make you vulnerable. Then refocus your mind on God’s Word so that you can replace those negative emotions with God’s love.

Dios, ¿Por qué me está Pasando esto a mí?

“Ahora nuestro conocimiento es parcial e incompleto… Ahora vemos todo de manera imperfecta, como reflejos desconcertantes, pero luego veremos todo con perfecta claridad. Todo lo que ahora conozco es parcial e incompleto, pero luego conoceré todo por completo, tal como Dios ya me conoce a mí completamente”.   1 Corintios 13:9, 12 (NTV)

En su dolor y desesperación, Job hizo muchas preguntas legítimas: “¿Por qué dar luz a los desdichados, y vida a los amargados?” Job 3:20 (NTV).

Esta pregunta de “por qué” es la naturaleza humana, y todos nos la hacemos. Tenemos la idea errónea de que, si entendemos la razón detrás de nuestro dolor, el dolor será más fácil.

Esta es la verdad. No necesitas una explicación; necesitas fuerza. No necesitas una explicación; necesitas un Salvador. No necesitas una explicación; necesitas consuelo y apoyo.

Pero siempre queremos una explicación. Hacemos preguntas: ¿Por qué esa persona se fue de mi vida? ¿Por qué me hizo una promesa y luego la rompió? ¿Por qué me lastimó? ¿Por qué perdí mi trabajo? ¿Por qué murió? ¿Por qué me enfermé?

Amigos, he estado estudiando la pregunta “por qué” durante años, y aquí está mi respuesta educada: no lo sé. Y nunca lo sabré porque no soy Dios. ¡Y tú tampoco! Simplemente nunca vamos a entender algunas cosas hasta que lleguemos al cielo. Entonces todo se aclarará.

Solo Dios sabe la respuesta a tu “por qué”. Y si no obtienes su respuesta de inmediato, es mejor que dejes de preguntar “por qué”, porque simplemente estás prolongando el dolor.

Proverbios 25:2 dice: “Es privilegio de Dios ocultar un asunto” (NTV). Dios es un Dios de revelación. Se revela a sí mismo a través de la naturaleza, las circunstancias y las Escrituras. La única razón por la que sabes algo acerca de Dios es porque Él ha decidido revelarse a sí mismo.

Pero la Biblia dice que Dios no solo revela; Dios también oculta. Y a veces Dios intencionalmente esconde su rostro de ti. ¿Por qué? Entonces aprenderás a confiar en Él y a vivir por fe en lugar de tus sentimientos.

Dios no te debe una explicación. Dios no tiene que consultar contigo antes de hacer algo. Dios no tiene que obtener tu permiso antes de permitir que las cosas sucedan en la vida. Dios es Dios, y no siempre vas a entender por qué suceden algunas cosas.

La Biblia dice: “Ahora nuestro conocimiento es parcial e incompleto… Ahora vemos todo de manera imperfecta, como reflejos desconcertantes, pero luego veremos todo con perfecta claridad. Un día, todo se aclarará y tendrá sentido. Podrás decir: “¡Por ​​eso Dios permitió aquello en mi vida!”. Hasta entonces, Dios quiere que confíes en Él.

Pay Attention to Satan’s Predictable Patterns

“When you forgive this man, I forgive him, too. And when I forgive whatever needs to be forgiven, I do so with Christ’s authority for your benefit, so that Satan will not outsmart us. For we are familiar with his evil schemes.”

2 Corinthians 2:10-11 (NLT)

You can’t defeat temptation if you don’t understand how it works.

The only good thing we can say about Satan is that he doesn’t have any new ideas. He’s used the same temptations over and over since humanity was created. The tactics he used on Adam and Eve are the ones he’s still using today.

God had clearly told Adam and Eve they could eat from any tree in the garden except the tree of knowledge of good and evil. When Satan tempted Eve, he asked her something like, “Did God really say to not eat this?” And then he said, “Go ahead and try it. You’re not going to die if you eat this! You’re going to be a god yourself.”

Satan uses that same pattern in your life every day. First, it starts with a wrong desire inside you, like envy, lust, or impatience. Or it starts with a right desire, like for food or sex or love, but with the temptation to fulfill it in the wrong way at the wrong time. Satan can take any desire and make it destructive.

Then he causes you to doubt God’s Word and whispers, “Did God really say that?” He takes the seed of your doubt and grows it into a lie he knows you are vulnerable to accepting. Behind every sin is a lie you choose to believe. Remember, Satan is crafty. He knows where in your life you are most likely to fall, and he focuses on turning your doubt into full-blown deception.

When you believe Satan’s lie, you’re saying, “I know what will make me happy more than God does.” You legitimize your wrong desire. You convince yourself it’s not that bad. And then you fall into disobedience.

The Bible says, “When you forgive this man, I forgive him, too. And when I forgive whatever needs to be forgiven, I do so with Christ’s authority for your benefit, so that Satan will not outsmart us. For we are familiar with his evil schemes” (2 Corinthians 2:10-11 NLT).

God doesn’t want you to be ignorant of how Satan works, because when you understand Satan’s tactics, you can see him coming with his schemes. The key is not resisting your temptations but knowing how to respond to Satan’s predictable patterns.

Deja que tus Amigos te Ayuden en los Tiempos Difíciles

“Ayúdense unos a otros a llevar sus cargas, y así cumplirán la ley de Cristo”. Gálatas 6:2 (NVI)

Cuando atraviesas grandes decepciones en la vida, es natural querer retroceder y aislarse. Quieres manejarlo tú mismo. Deseas mantener en secreto tus pérdidas, fracasos, errores y crisis. Quieres retirarte. ¡Pero esta es una idea terrible!

Cuando pasas por una decepción, es cuando más necesitas a tus amigos. Dios no tiene la intención de que manejes el dolor y el estrés por ti mismo. Lo más sano es aceptar la ayuda de los demás.

Fuimos creados para estar conectados el uno para el otro. Nos necesitamos el uno al otro. Somos seres creados para relacionarnos. Una de las primeras cosas que Dios dijo en el Jardín del Edén fue: “«No es bueno que el hombre esté solo. Haré una ayuda ideal para él»” Génesis 2:18 (NTV). Estamos hechos para estar en relaciones.

Job 6:14 dice: “Al amigo que sufre no se le niega la lealtad, aunque se haya apartado del temor al Todopoderoso” (NVI).

Habrá momentos en tu vida en los que sientas tanto dolor que dirás: “¡Ni siquiera creo en Dios en este momento!” Necesitas tener amigos que te acompañen y te animen a creer.

Llegará un momento en que dirás: “No tengo fe en este momento. Estoy lleno de dudas. Ahí es cuando necesitas que tus amigos intervengan y digan: “Está bien. Tendremos fe por ti. Confiaremos en Dios por ti en esto”.

La Biblia dice: “Ayúdense unos a otros a llevar sus cargas, y así cumplirán la ley de Cristo” Gálatas 6:2 (NVI). ¿Qué es la ley de Cristo? Es esto: Ama a tu prójimo como a ti mismo. La Biblia nos ordena que nos ayudemos unos a otros. Cada vez que ayudas a alguien que está pasando por dolor, estás cumpliendo con la ley de Cristo.

Tratar de manejar los problemas solo te hará sentir más cansado y estresado. Necesitas aceptar la ayuda de los demás y dejar que tus amigos te guíen, sabiendo que Dios está contigo a través de todo el camino. Él está trabajando en tus circunstancias, incluso cuando no puedes ver lo que Él está haciendo.

None of us are immune to persistent sins. Some people struggle with anger, while others wrestle with worry or gossip or lust.

How do you break free from persistent sin?

You understand what Jesus has done for you. On the cross, Jesus paid for the penalty of your sins so you don’t have to pay for it. All of your sins—even the ones you haven’t committed yet—have been paid for on the cross.

Jesus not only paid for your sin, but he also paid to break the power of sin in your life. Now you have a power you didn’t have before—the power to say no to sin. It’s more than willpower. It’s Holy Spirit power!

The Bible says in Romans 8:2, “The power of the life-giving Spirit—and this power is mine through Christ Jesus—has freed me from the vicious circle of sin and death” (TLB).

If you’re a Christian, you know Jesus died to pay for your sin. That’s the Good News. And if that was all there was, that would still be the best news in the world. But when he died on the cross, Jesus also took our old sin nature and gave us a new nature, one that no longer has to live in persistent sin. The Bible teaches, “We know that our old sinful selves were crucified with Christ so that sin might lose its power in our lives. We are no longer slaves to sin” (Romans 6:6 NLT).

Sin no longer has any power in your life. A dead person can’t be tempted! That old nature can’t be tempted, and since it died with Christ, you can be confident that you also share in his new life.

Willpower will never be enough to break the power of sin in your life. But thanks to Jesus, you have more than enough power in the Holy Spirit to resist temptation and break the vicious circle of sin and death.

What sin has remained persistent in your life even after you became a Christian?

God proved his goodness through his Son, Jesus Christ. The Bible says, “For God loved the world in this way: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16 CSB).

Are you ready to trust God to fulfill his promise of eternal life? If so, pray this simple prayer: "Dear God, I believe Jesus Christ is your Son. I confess I have sinned, and I ask for your forgiveness. I believe that Jesus died to take away my sins and that you raised him to life. I want to trust Jesus as my Savior and follow him as Lord from this day forward. Guide my life and help me to do your will. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.”

No Aguantes el Dolor; Cuéntaselo a Dios

“Levántense durante la noche y clamen. Desahoguen el corazón como agua delante del Señor. Levanten a él sus manos en oración” . Lamentaciones 2:19 (NTV)

¿Crees que has tenido un mal día? Job lo entendería; prácticamente tenía un doctorado en dolor y pérdida.

En el primer capítulo de Job, todo en su vida se vino abajo. ¿Su respuesta? “Job se levantó y rasgó su vestido en señal de dolor; después se rasuró la cabeza y se postró en el suelo para adorar” Job 1:20 (NTV).

Nota que Job expresó abiertamente su dolor a Dios. Cuando experimentas dolor, ¿le dices a Dios exactamente cómo te sientes? Debería ser lo primero que hagas.

Esto puede sorprenderte, pero Dios puede manejar tu enojo y frustración. Él puede manejar tus emociones. ¿Por qué? Porque Él te los dio. Fuiste hecho a su imagen, y Él es un Dios emocional.

Cuando tu hijo de 2 años tiene una rabieta y empieza a patalear, puedes manejarlo. De la misma manera, Dios es más grande que tus emociones y está bien decirle exactamente cómo te sientes.

Cuando oras por un ascenso, pero no lo obtienes, cuando un ser querido se va de tu vida, o cuando recibes la temida llamada diciendo: “Es cáncer”, puedes decirle a Dios cómo te sientes. Puedes decir: “Estoy enojado. Estoy molesto. Estoy frustrado”. Dios puede manejar tus quejas, preguntas, temores y penas. El amor de Dios por ti es más grande que todas tus emociones.

Mis hijos saben que los amo. Saben que tengo más experiencia que ellos porque he estado en este planeta por más tiempo. Pero mis hijos a veces cuestionan mi juicio. Aun así, prefiero tener una conversación honesta con ellos que dejar que se guarden la frustración y la decepción.

¡Dios es igual! Él preferiría que discutieras con Él con ira a que te alejes con una apatía indiferente.

Cuando ocurre una tragedia, no tienes que sonreír y soportarlo. En cambio, ve a tu Padre celestial con tu dolor. “Levántense durante la noche y clamen. Desahoguen el corazón como agua delante del Señor. Levanten a él sus manos en oración” Lamentaciones 2:19 (NTV).

¿Quién es la primera persona con la que sueles hablar de tus problemas? ¿Por qué confías en esa persona? ¿De qué manera haría una diferencia ir primero a Dios?¿Cuándo te has guardado la ira para ti mismo? ¿Cuáles fueron los efectos físicos y emocionales de eso?¿Qué harás para ser más honesto con Dios en tus oraciones?Si todavía no has confiado en Jesús y no te has comprometido a seguirlo, ¿por qué esperar más?
