You Have the Power to Say ‘No’

“You are not controlled by your sinful nature. You are controlled by the Spirit if you have the Spirit of God living in you.”

Romans 8:9 (NLT)

Some people today insist that we should just give in to any desire that comes our way. If it feels good, do it! If it serves you, go for it! If everyone else is doing it, why not? As long as it doesn’t hurt anyone, have at it!

It’s a destructive mindset. Just because you have the desire to eat an entire chocolate cake doesn’t mean it’s good for you. And just because you think doing something won’t hurt anyone doesn’t mean you’re free of the consequences of your choices.

Romans 8:9 says, “You are not controlled by your sinful nature. You are controlled by the Spirit if you have the Spirit of God living in you” (NLT).

Before you became a believer, you only had willpower to fight against temptations. But it was never enough. You were relatively powerless against the cravings that drove you to make unhealthy and destructive choices.

As a believer, you now have the Holy Spirit—and a new ability to say “no.” You still have the same compulsions, desires, lusts, and impulses you had before you began a relationship with Jesus. But now the power of God resides in you. Now you have the power to say “no.”

The Bible says, “So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves” (Galatians 5:16 NLT). It doesn’t say you won’t have sinful desires after you become a Christian. You’re still going to be a sinful human. But you do have the Holy Spirit, who will help you choose not to satisfy those desires.

If you ever hear people say, “I’m a Christian, but I couldn’t stop myself,” they’re lying. They can stop themselves! They simply never called on the power of the Holy Spirit in the moment of temptation. They didn’t surrender to his guidance in their lives.

You have the greatest power in the universe available to you. It’s your choice to use it to say “no” to anything that does not honor and please God.

El Cambio Requiere Aprender la Verdad

“Ya que han oído sobre Jesús y han conocido la verdad que procede de él, desháganse de su vieja naturaleza pecaminosa y de su antigua manera de vivir, que está corrompida por la sensualidad y el engaño. En cambio, dejen que el Espíritu les renueve los pensamientos y las actitudes. Pónganse la nueva naturaleza, creada para ser a la semejanza de Dios, quien es verdaderamente justo y santo”. Efesios 4:21-24 (NTV)

Nunca cambiarás las cosas en tu vida que sabes que son defectuosas hasta que sepas la verdad. El cambio requiere conocer la verdad.

Jesús dijo, “Conocerán la verdad, y la verdad los hará libres” Juan 8:32 (NTV).

No serás libre hasta que conozcas la verdad. El secreto para el cambio personal no es una pastilla, un programa, o un proceso. No es una terapia, un libro, o un seminario. No es el pensamiento positivo o la psicología. La prueba del cambio personal la encontramos en la verdad. Tienes que saber y enfrentar la verdad sobre ti mismo, Dios, y tus relaciones antes de que puedas cambiar.

Detrás de cada comportamiento autodestructivo en tu vida hay una mentira que te estás creyendo. Si en este momento estás endeudado es porque has creído algunas mentiras. Pensaste, “solamente lo cargo a la tarjeta y lo tengo” ¿En serio? “Tengo que tener esta casa” ¿En serio? ¿Tienes que tenerla? ¿Eso crees? ¿Puedes probarlo?

Todo el tiempo nos mentimos a nosotros mismos. Pero tienes que saber y enfrentar la verdad si quieres cambiar.

Jesús dijo que la verdad te hace libre. ¡Pero primero te hace miserable! Te hace miserable siempre y cuando la niegues. En el momento en que eres honesto con la verdad acerca de ti, y de tu vida, es ahí cuando esa verdad te hará ser libre.

¿Quién es la verdad? Jesús dijo, “Yo soy la verdad”, no dijo “yo la tengo, o yo señalo el camino hacia, o yo la enseño”. Él dijo, “Yo soy. Yo soy la verdad”.

Puedes confiar en su Palabra. Su Palabra es la Biblia.

La Biblia es buena para cuatro cosas: “Toda la Escritura es inspirada por Dios y útil para enseñar, para reprender, para corregir y para instruir en la justicia, a fin de que el siervo de Dios esté enteramente capacitado para toda buena obra” 2 Timoteo 3:16-17 (NVI).

La Biblia es como un camino. Nos muestra dónde ir y cómo mantenernos en el camino. Nos muestra cuando estamos fuera del camino y cómo volver al camino. Cuando usas la Palabra de Dios para mostrarte dónde y cómo deberías caminar, ella te dará la instrucción y la inteligencia que necesitas para cambiar tu vida.

Change Your Thoughts, Change Your Life

“Those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace.”

Romans 8:5-6 (NIV)

You haven’t been sentenced to a life of frustration and stress. You don’t have to be stuck in your hurts, habits, and hang-ups. God has something far better for you.

We all want peace and freedom—and the good news is it may be closer than you think.

The Bible teaches that, for those who follow Jesus, peace is a mindset. If you’re not at peace, it’s your choice.

In the next few months, the economy more than likely won’t change. Your work situation won’t change. Your broken relationships may not get healed.

But your mindset can change. That will be the difference between a life of self-destruction and a life of peace.

The Bible says in Romans 8:5-6, “Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace” (NIV).

Ask the Holy Spirit to give you better thoughts—thoughts that bring peace, not frustration. You need to look at your situation differently: in the Holy Spirit way.

Will you look at your life the way you’ve always looked at it, or will you look at it the way God does? Remember, the “mind governed by the flesh is death.” Choosing to look at your situation through your own lens is self-destructive.

Ask the Holy Spirit to replace the self-destructive thoughts with his own. When you’ve got something negative in your life, don’t resist it. Replace it.

If you turn on the TV, and there’s something on that you don’t want to watch or you shouldn’t watch, you can’t just sit there and tell yourself you shouldn’t be watching it. You have to change the channel. You replace it—immediately.

You choose what you dwell on. Ask the Holy Spirit to give you the thoughts you need to focus on. He’ll do it! He will change your perspective. And that will change your life.

¿Por qué es tan Difícil Cambiar las Cosas que No nos Gustan?

“Si afirmamos que no tenemos pecado, lo único que hacemos es engañarnos a nosotros mismos y no vivimos en la verdad”. 1 Juan 1:8 (NTV)

Todos tenemos defectos. Todos tenemos partes de nuestra vida que simplemente no funcionan. Ninguno de nosotros tenemos la medida de un estándar de perfección. Pretender que lo tienes todo cuando todo el mundo sabe que no lo tienes, es tonto. De hecho, la Biblia nos dice que eso es autoengaño.

Nunca serás libre de pecado en este planeta, pero es posible pecar menos. ¿Por qué es tan difícil cambiar en nosotros las cosas que realmente no nos gustan?

Porque hemos tenido nuestros defectos mucho tiempo.
Algunos de nuestros patrones destructivos fueron desarrollados en la infancia, tal vez es la resistencia a un dolor o como una forma de afrontar el estrés. Estos defectos pueden ser contraproducentes, ¡pero al menos estás familiarizado!Porque nos vemos reflejados en nuestros defectos.
A menudo confundimos nuestra identidad con nuestros defectos. Cuando te ves conectado con tus defectos, te fijas en perpetuarlos.Porque nuestros defectos tienen una recompensa.
Cualquier cosa que es recompensada se vuelve repetitiva. La recompensa por los defectos que tienes en tu vida puede ser ocultar tu dolor, encubrir el temor, tener una excusa para fallar o compensar la culpa.Porque satanás nos desalienta.
Una vez que comiences a trabajar con algo en tu vida que quieres cambiar, satanás comienza a decirte: “¿Quién te crees que eres? Tú nunca vas a cambiar. No has sido capaz de cambiar en el pasado. ¿Crees que vas a ser capaz de cambiar ahora? Es inútil. No va a funcionar. Esos temores son plantados en tu mente por el mismo Diablo.

Estas cosas nos impiden cambiar las heridas, hábitos y obsesiones que sabemos que son poco saludables.

Entonces, ¿qué  patrones necesito cambiar  en mi vida que realmente no me gustan de mí?

Así que dejen de decir mentiras. Digamos siempre la verdad a todos porque nosotros somos miembros de un mismo cuerpo. Además, «no pequen al dejar que el enojo los controle». No permitan que el sol se ponga mientras siguen enojados,  porque el enojo da lugar al diablo” Efesios 4:21-27 (NTV).

Reflexiona sobre esto:

¿Alguna vez has tratado de cambiar un mal hábito en el pasado y te sentiste desalentado? ¿Por qué crees que te sentiste de esa manera? ¿Cómo respondiste?¿Qué defecto se perpetúa por pensar que es parte de tu maquillaje? Trata de cambiar tu forma de pensar: En lugar de decir: “trabajo demasiado” di: “soy un adicto al trabajo”. En lugar de decir: “Soy un perezoso” di: “Tengo la tendencia a posponer las cosas”.Si todavía no has confiado en Jesús y no te has comprometido a seguirlo, ¿por qué esperar más? Jesus Took Your Judgment

“There is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus.”

Romans 8:1 (NLT)

Do you get it right all the time? Of course you don’t! None of us do. None of us is perfect.

There is a lot of pressure in our society to have it all together, to be successful in every endeavor, to be everything to everyone. But those expectations are unrealistic. Why? Because you are human. And being a Christian does not make you a super-human.

The Bible says you won’t be perfect after you become a Christian. If someone tells you that, that person is not telling the truth. You’re going to mess up. You’re going to fail at times. And most likely you will beat yourself up for your failures.

But, if you’re a follower of Jesus, you can be sure of this: God never condemns you.

Way too many believers live in fear, bitterness, and insecurity. Although they’re saved, you’d never know it by how they live. They’re too stressed out with fear that God will condemn them for what they’ve done wrong. They’re walking around with tension in their mind and body, and it shows in how they look at the future and how they treat others. Instead of dealing with their own guilt, they often pile it on others.

Yet the Bible says there’s no need: “There is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus” (Romans 8:1 NLT).

In other words, God doesn’t judge you for all the things you’ve done wrong if you’ve trusted Christ. Jesus took all that judgment upon himself on the cross. God doesn’t have to judge you because Jesus was judged. He took the blame for your sins.

That’s amazing news. That is Good News—the Gospel! There’s no reason for a Christian to walk around in shame. There’s no reason to be bitter. Before you were ever born, God knew all the sins you’d ever commit—and he paid the price for every single one of them.

Whatever you’ve done in your past, whoever you’ve hurt, no matter what other people tell you—you can be sure of this: If you’ve given your life to Christ, you’re forgiven.

It is finished!

Will God Find You Faithful

Will God Find You Faithful

In Luke 18:8, Jesus asked, “When I, the Messiah, return, how many will I find who have faith?” (TLB). Why is it so important that Jesus finds us faithful in a faithless world? The Bible gives three compelling reasons:

God wants to bless faithful people.

The Bible says in 2 Chronicles 16:9, “For the eyes of the Lord search back and forth across the whole earth, looking for people whose hearts are perfect toward him, so that he can show his great power in helping them” (TLB). And Proverbs 28:20 promises, “A faithful person will be richly blessed” (NIV).

Faithful people are hard to find.

People who trust God with all their heart, soul, mind, and strength are actually quite rare. The Bible says, “Everyone talks about how loyal and faithful he is, but just try to find someone who really is!” (Proverbs 20:6 GNT).

Faithfulness is the key to victory.

The Bible teaches, “Every child of God is able to defeat the world. And we win the victory over the world by means of our faith” (1 John 5:4 GNT). Talent, money, and intelligence won’t give you victory, but a life of faithfulness leads to spiritual victory as you overcome difficulties, distress, and despair.

El Poder del Pensamiento Eterno

“Así que como somos sus hijos, también somos sus herederos. De hecho, somos herederos junto con Cristo de la gloria de Dios; pero si vamos a participar de su gloria, también debemos participar de su sufrimiento”. Romanos 8:17 (NTV)

Un famoso estudio de Harvard mostró que existe una conexión directa entre un pensamiento a largo plazo y el éxito. La mayoría de las personas que se enfocan solamente en ganar en forma rápida probablemente fallarán. Aquellos que se enfocan en lo que “les hace sentir bien” en el momento, están condenados a fracasar.

Para los cristianos, esto podría ser fácil. Porque cuando pensamos a largo plazo, lo llamamos eternidad. No estamos pensando en un futuro de 40 o 50 años. Nosotros pensamos en millones y millones de años como futuro.

Vivir pensando en la eternidad te hará una persona más exitosa. Cuando piensas a largo plazo, podrás controlar los problemas momentáneos que aparezcan en tu camino

Romanos 8:17, “Así que como somos sus hijos, también somos sus herederos. De hecho, somos herederos junto con Cristo de la gloria de Dios; pero si vamos a participar de su gloria, también debemos participar de su sufrimiento” (NTV).

Si eres seguidor de Cristo, un día serás recompensado por lo que has hecho con lo que has recibido. Usa tus talentos, tiempo, tesoro e influencias para el propósito de Dios y serás recompensado por tus decisiones. Los versículos anteriores también dicen que se te recompensará en el Cielo por lo que Jesús hizo: “somos herederos junto con Cristo de la gloria de Dios”.

Es mucho lo que te espera en el Cielo. Tu dolor y tus problemas van a tener poca importancia en comparación con todo lo que Dios tiene preparado para ti en el Cielo.

No es fácil ser creyente. No es fácil hacer lo que es correcto. Algunas veces no es fácil hablar de Jesús a otros. No es fácil dar el diezmo. Pero los beneficios de seguir a Jesús y obedecer lo que Él nos enseña perdurarán más allá del dolor.

Es simplemente absurdo enfocarse solamente en resultados a corto plazo.

Describe una lucha específica que estés enfrentando y di como cambiaría si la vieras desde la perspectiva eterna.¿Cuántas de tus preocupaciones dejarían de serlo, si las enfocaras desde la perspectiva de la eternidad?Si pensamos en la Eternidad, ¿Qué se convertiría en importante?Si todavía no has confiado en Jesús y no te has comprometido a seguirlo, ¿por qué esperar más? Willpower Won’t Solve Your Problem

“I love God’s law with all my heart. But there is another power within me that is at war with my mind. This power makes me a slave to the sin that is still within me.”

Romans 7:22-23 (NLT)

You have a war inside of you that will rage for your entire life between who you used to be and who you’ve become in Jesus Christ. Even Paul, the most decorated missionary in the history of Christianity and the author of most of the New Testament, battled with it.

The Bible says in Romans 7:22-23, “I love God’s law with all my heart. But there is another power within me that is at war with my mind. This power makes me a slave to the sin that is still within me” (NLT, second edition).

I hate to tell you this, but you’ll always have this battle. You’ll never outgrow it. You can’t read enough Scripture to make the temptations go away. You can’t hide from them.

Until you get to Heaven, you’re stuck with an all-out battle between your two natures. I’ve been a believer for a long time, but my old nature is still there. My old nature wants me to be prideful, lustful, self-centered, deceptive, and downright sinful sometimes.

You have the same old nature always trying to get the best of you. The question is, what are you going to do about it?

Willpower won’t solve the problem. Just because you want to change and put everything into making that change doesn’t mean you’ll make the change. It may work for a bit, but you’ll get tired and stop the effort.

In your spiritual walk, you have to choose to follow your new nature, meaning you choose not to follow your old nature. For instance, if you’re tempted with lust but you immediately remove yourself from the temptation, you’ll starve the old self. If, when you’re tempted with pride, you remember your dependence upon God, your old nature can’t last long.

You have to make choices—maybe a hundred a day—to put the old nature aside and follow your new nature that is becoming like Jesus Christ.

Talk It Over

In what ways do you see your old nature struggling with your new nature on a daily basis?
How can you set yourself up for success in these situations?
Why is it necessary to remove yourself from temptation instead of just looking the other way or praying about it?

Where will you spend eternity?

The Bible says you can only get to heaven by trusting in God’s Son, Jesus Christ. You can’t earn your way into heaven: “It is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast” (Ephesians 2:8-9 NIV).

If you’re ready to commit your life to Jesus, start by praying this prayer:

“Dear God, you have promised that if I believe in your Son, Jesus Christ, everything I’ve ever done wrong will be forgiven, I will learn the purpose of my life, and you will accept me into your eternal home in heaven one day.

“I confess I have sinned, and I ask for your forgiveness. I believe that Jesus died to take away my sins and that you raised him to life. I want to trust Jesus as my Savior and follow him as Lord from this day forward. Guide my life and help me to do your will. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.”

La Verdad es el Antídoto contra el Miedo

“Todos los que son guiados por el Espíritu de Dios son hijos de Dios. Y ustedes no han recibido un espíritu que los esclavice al miedo. En cambio, recibieron el Espíritu de Dios cuando él los adoptó como sus propios hijos. Ahora lo llamamos «Abba, Padre».  Pues su Espíritu se une a nuestro espíritu para confirmar que somos hijos de Dios”. Romanos 8:14-16 (NTV)

 Cuando yo era un niño, no me asustaba muy a menudo. Jugaba sin temor. Pero cuando me llegaba a asustar, siempre le gritaba a mi papá. Yo sabía que él era fuerte. Yo sabía que él podía con cualquiera.

Eso es lo que tú y yo estamos llamados a hacer cuando estamos asustados. Deja de enfocarte en tu miedo. Enfócate en tu Padre. Pídele a Dios que te ayude. Romanos 8:14-16 dice, “Todos los que son guiados por el Espíritu de Dios son hijos de Dios. Y ustedes no han recibido un espíritu que los esclavice al miedo. En cambio, recibieron el Espíritu de Dios cuando él los adoptó como sus propios hijos. Ahora lo llamamos «Abba, Padre».  Pues su Espíritu se une a nuestro espíritu para confirmar que somos hijos de Dios”. 

El antídoto para el miedo es la verdad de que ya no eres un esclavo, sino que eres un hijo de Dios. El ser un hijo de Dios cambia todo. Eres parte de una familia ahora. Y en las familias se cuidan unos a otros.

Eso es lo que Dios quiere que sepas cuando estás asustado. Tú eres parte de Su familia y Dios cuida a sus hijos. Él cubre tus espaldas. El saber que eres un hijo del creador del universo, cambia todo.

Llámalo. Pídele ayuda.

People don’t go to war by themselves. It would be a suicide mission. Someone has to have your back.

You need a battle buddy.

The same is true in the spiritual battles we all face. You can’t go to war against lustful thoughts, dishonesty, addictions, and fear by yourself. You’ll be doomed to fail.

If all you want is to be forgiven, admit your sin and brokenness to God. If you want to make a change, admit it to someone else.

Revealing your sin is the beginning of healing. You don’t need to admit your sin to everyone. But you need to admit it to someone. You need one person who’ll love you unconditionally, accept you completely, and pray for you constantly.

The Bible says in James 5:16, “Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so God can heal you. When a believing person prays, great things happen” (NCV).

When you confess your sins to someone else, you open the relief valve and take the pressure off. Suddenly, the scary monster in the closet isn’t so big.

Often sin is a cycle. You start out humbly asking God for help, so he gives you the power to make it. After about six months of success, you start getting prideful. Then, you fall. And, in humility again, you ask God for help. If you could stay in that spirit of humility, you’d be good. But pride always returns.

You can’t kick that kind of cycle without friends who’ll pray for you, care for you, encourage you, and keep you on track. When success comes, they’ll help you keep your perspective so your humility stays in check.

This is why local churches are so important. But you can attend many churches for years and never put yourself in a situation where you know others and are known by others. Make the effort to find a small group of believers in a local church with whom you can be open and honest.

To think you can quit a bad habit without being honest about it with others is simply a cop-out. It never works. You guarantee failure when you do that.
