Satan Is Real

“For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.”

Ephesians 6:12 (NIV)

You have an enemy—and it may not be who you think it is. It’s not the person you’re competing against at work. It’s not the difficult neighbor. It’s not your ex-spouse.

Your enemy isn’t human at all.

“For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms” (Ephesians 6:12 NIV).

Your battle is with Satan.

One of the reasons we so often walk around in discouragement and defeat is because we don’t really understand who we’re battling. We don’t understand who our real enemy is. We blame the economy, a political party, a segment of people, or the person we can’t stand down the street.

We blame everyone but the one the Bible calls a thief and a liar, who is out to destroy anyone who loves and follows Jesus.

To find victory in your life over what’s dragging you down, you’ve got to start by attacking the right enemy.

When you do, keep these truths in mind as you battle against your true enemy, Satan.

First, you’re no match for Satan. It’s like trying to shoot a rubber band at a battleship. Outside of Jesus, you have no hope of defeating Satan’s influence over your life.

Second, everyone gets used by Satan. Satan will put thoughts in the minds of Christians and non-Christians alike. At times we can all be a pawn of Satan. You need to protect yourself with the armor of God (Ephesians 6:10-17).

Third, not everything that is spiritual is good. There’s spiritual light and spiritual darkness. Don’t fall for the lie that all roads to God are equal. Jesus said, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6 NIV).

Finally, Satan doesn’t fight fair. Satan can’t slug you, so instead he puts discouraging and depressing ideas into your mind. You’ve got to catch him in the act, let him know you know where the idea comes from, and ask the Holy Spirit for help.

Satan is real. He’s the enemy who has been disrupting your life—but he doesn’t have a chance against God’s power in your life when you call on Jesus’ name.

Talk It Over

Who have you considered your enemy? What can you stop doing when you understand who your real enemy is?
How can you know when a thought is from Satan or not?
What are the thoughts that have been in your head lately that you know are from Satan? What are you going to do to counter-attack those thoughts and guard your mind?

En sus Marcas, Listos — Espera

“El Señor es bueno con los que dependen de él, con aquellos que lo buscan. Por eso es bueno esperar en silencio la salvación que proviene del Señor”. Lamentaciones 3:25-26 (NVI)

Cuando la vida parece estar cayéndose a pedazos, tu decisión más espiritual puede ser una sorpresa: Ve a solas con Dios y espera.

Lamentaciones 3:28 (traducción de la paráfrasis en Inglés, El Mensaje) dice: “Cuando la vida es pesada y difícil de llevar, detente. Entra en el silencio. Póstrate en oración. No hagas preguntas: Aguarda que la esperanza aparezca. No huyas del problema. Enfréntalo. Lo peor nunca será lo peor”.

La mayoría de nosotros no sabemos cómo “entrar en el silencio”. Siempre estamos ansiosos. No nos gusta esperar en Dios porque esto nos estresa. Nos gusta estar en control.

¿Qué significa esperar en Dios? Siéntate, cierra tu boca y solo escucha a Dios. Puedes leer la Biblia. Puedes orar. Pero sobre todas las cosas, quédate callado delante de Dios.

La ansiedad viene cuando no estamos “aguardando que la esperanza aparezca”, como nos dice Jeremías. Dios quiere hablarnos. Él quiere darnos la esperanza que anhelamos. Pero estamos demasiado ocupados. ¡Todos nuestros circuitos están ocupados! Cuando Él nos llama, estamos en la otra línea.

Si queremos escuchar a Dios y experimentar la esperanza que tiene para nosotros, tenemos que estar a solas con Él. Debemos “entrar en el silencio” y estar listos para escucharlo.

Jesús también dice esto en Mateo 6:6, “Pero tú, cuando te pongas a orar, entra en tu cuarto, cierra la puerta y ora a tu Padre, que está en lo secreto. Así tu Padre, que ve lo que se hace en secreto, te recompensará” (NVI).

Se honesto con Dios, y tu enfoque cambiará de ver solo tus problemas —no importa cuán abrumador parezca— a ver la gracia de Dios.

Lamentaciones 3:25-26 dice: “El Señor es bueno con los que dependen de él, con aquellos que lo buscan. Por eso es bueno esperar en silencio la salvación que proviene del Señor” (NVI).

Antes de salir y tratar de resolver tus problemas por tu cuenta, deja que Dios te salve. Es como en esas películas de guerra cuando el enemigo está marchando hacia el ejército del héroe —que es por lo general un grupo inferior, el grupo del canalla. El héroe les dice a sus hombres que esperen hasta que se dé la orden de disparar. Luego, en el último momento posible, les grita, ‘¡Disparen!’ Disparar en el momento justo significa la victoria.

Lo mismo es cierto para nosotros. No importa qué obstáculos estés enfrentando, tienes que esperar el tiempo de Dios. Él tendrá el tiempo perfecto para tu próximo movimiento.

Entonces espera y escucha.

The Battle You Were Born to Win

“The one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.”

1 John 4:4 (NIV)

You were born into a battle. You didn’t ask for it. But a cosmic battle that started before you were born and will continue long after you die is taking place all throughout the universe. You can’t escape the battle between God and Satan, good and evil. Even people who don’t know it exists can’t escape it!

Because we’re talking about God, there’s good news. It’s important to know God and Satan are not equal sides. You don’t have to wonder who’s going to win this war. There is no suspense, no wondering who’s going to be standing at the end. God is far superior in all ways. And the Bible tells us that at the end of this world, God is going to have the last word. One day God will completely wipe Satan out.

Until then, he allows us to have a choice of whose side we’re on.

People are often pawns in this cosmic battle. Why? Because Satan can’t hurt God. What do you do when you can’t hurt someone? You hurt his children—so Satan goes after you.

The bad news is, you were born for a spiritual battle. But you were also born to win the battle. The Bible says, “The one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world” (1 John 4:4 NIV).

Satan isn’t afraid of you. He is afraid of who is in you: God.

When you become a Christian, God gives you the Holy Spirit to live in you. With the Holy Spirit in you, you don’t have to be afraid of Satan. Because with the Holy Spirit, you have the power that raised Jesus from the dead. That power guarantees you victory not just over the war but over every battle you face in your life—every temptation, every sorrow, every pain you experience.

All you have to do is call on the Holy Spirit. God is ready to give you the help, comfort, and power you need for life.

You’re on the winning side of this war. Now it’s time to live like it.

Díselo al Señor

“Hizo que mi piel y mi carne envejecieran; quebró mis huesos. Me sitió y me rodeó de angustia y aflicción. Me enterró en un lugar oscuro, como a los que habían muerto hace tiempo… Y a pesar de que lloro y grito, cerró sus oídos a mis oraciones”. Lamentaciones 3:4-6, 8 (NTV)

Todos pasamos por un momento en nuestras vidas que parece que todo se está derrumbando a pedazos. Perdemos nuestro trabajo, una relación se deshace, alguien muere, nuestra salud se torna a mal.

En estos momentos, somos tentados a pensar que Dios nos ha abandonado.

Pero Él no lo ha hecho.

El antiguo profeta Jeremías estaba en el mismo bote cuando escribió el libro de Lamentaciones. Su país, Judá, sufrió una vertiginosa crisis económica y fue aterrorizada por un enemigo extranjero. Él fue testigo de increíbles crueldades cometidas contra su pueblo. La gente estaba sin trabajo y muriéndose de hambre.

¿Dónde empezó Jeremías? Él le dijo a Dios cómo se sentía. En Lamentaciones 3, Jeremías dice: “Hizo que mi piel y mi carne envejecieran; quebró mis huesos. Me sitió y me rodeó de angustia y aflicción. Me enterró en un lugar oscuro, como a los que habían muerto hace tiempo… Y a pesar de que lloro y grito, cerró sus oídos a mis oraciones” Lamentaciones 3:4-6, 8 (NTV).

¿Te sorprende que estas palabras estén en la Biblia? Jeremías, también sintió que Dios lo había olvidado. Pero Jeremías no ignoró lo que estaba sintiendo. Él no endulzó la situación. Le dijo a Dios lo que estaba en su corazón. De hecho, Jeremías utilizó cinco capítulos para decirle a Dios lo que pensaba de la situación y le dijo a Dios: “¡Esto es horrible!”

¿Por qué Dios puso este tipo de pasaje en la Biblia? Él quiere que sepas que Él puede manejar tu ira, tus quejas y tu dolor. Jeremías utiliza todo un libro de la Biblia para desahogarse. Si Dios fue lo suficientemente grande para manejar el dolor de Jeremías, Él es lo suficientemente grande para manejar el tuyo también.

Comerte las emociones solamente te harás daño a ti mismo. ¡Tú estómago pagará las consecuencias!

En lugar de esto, descárgalos en Dios.

Cuando mis hijos eran pequeños, tenían rabietas. Sus rabietas no me hacían amarlos menos, no me hacían dudar en mis decisiones y no me hacían sentir menos padre.

Esas rabietas me recordaban que mis hijos eran inmaduros y no sabían lo que yo sabía.

Dios no te ama menos cuando tienes una rabieta. Él no te debe una explicación y nunca tiene miedo de lo que tengas que decirle.

Así que díselo. Será el comienzo de la sanidad.

There Is One Thing You Can Change

“Let us examine our ways and turn back to the LORD.”

Lamentations 3:40 (GNT)

When your life feels like it’s falling apart, knowing what you can change—and what you can’t change—can make all the difference.

You can’t change your past. You can’t change your parents. You can’t change the gifts and talents God has or hasn’t given you. You can’t change a handicap you’ve been given. You can’t bring back a loved one who has died.

You might as well accept all of those things. You’ll start to find peace in the midst of troubles when you accept what you can’t change. Otherwise, you’ll make yourself and the people you love miserable.

There’s much you can’t change, but there’s something important you can change: you can change you.

When Jeremiah’s world was falling apart, he wrote in Lamentations 3:40, “Let us examine our ways and turn back to the LORD” (GNT).

What’s going on in your life that doesn’t line up with what God wants? Depending on how we react, crises can help us as we learn to focus our eyes on what matters: Jesus.

To re-order your life God’s way, it’ll take some gut-level self-evaluation. You’ll need to do an inventory of every area of your life. You’ll need to take a look at your relationship with God, your spouse, your kids, your friends, and your co-workers. You’ll need to look at hurts and hang-ups that may be bringing you down. You have to assess what habits are leading you closer to Christ-likeness and which ones are pulling you away. You need to be honest about your flaws—not someone else’s—that got you where you are. Nothing can be off limits.

It’s not easy. It can get messy. It’s always tough to turn from sin, even when it’s tearing us down.

But you can’t find healing without telling yourself the truth about yourself. Healing apart from repentance can’t last. When your world is falling apart, you’ll be tempted to bemoan every area of your life.

That’s a waste of time. You can’t change everything—but, remember, you can change you.

And when your world is falling apart, that can mean everything.

Las Personas de Fe son Generosas

“Si no se les pueden confiar las riquezas mundanas, ¿quién les confiará las riquezas verdaderas? Si no se les puede confiar lo ajeno, ¿quién les dará lo que es de ustedes? Ningún siervo puede servir a dos patrones al mismo tiempo. Odiará a uno y amará al otro, o se dedicará a uno y despreciará al otro. Ustedes no pueden servir a Dios y a las riquezas al mismo tiempo”. Lucas 16:11-13 (PDT)

Las personas fieles son generosas cuando no tienen nada que dar. Cualquiera puede ser generoso cuando tiene un excedente. Yo puedo ser generoso con mi tiempo cuando tengo mucho tiempo de sobra. Puedo ser generoso con mi dinero cuando tengo dinero extra. Puedo ser generoso con mi energía cuando tengo energía extra para gastar. Es cuando no tengo suficiente para mí, que no tengo suficiente dinero para mí, que no tengo el talento suficiente para mí que Dios dice, “Esto es una prueba. Estoy viendo si me eres fiel. ¿Vas a ser fiel y vas a confiar en mí?”.

Aquí hay cinco principios en que Dios va a probarte y luego te bendice:

Dios da a las personas generosas.
¿Por qué Dios quiere que yo sea generoso? Porque quiere que yo sea como Él.Obedecer la visión de Dios traerá la provisión de Dios.
Si haces lo que Dios te dice que hagas, Dios traerá a lo largo los recursos que necesitas en el momento adecuado. Él te da su visión para provisión.Cuando hago todo lo que Dios me dice que haga, Él hace lo que yo no puedo hacer.
Dios a menudo te pide que hagas lo imposible para hacer crecer tu fe. Cuando das de lo poco que tienes, Dios lo multiplica y lo hace en abundancia.Cuando tengas una necesidad, siembra una semilla.
Para cualquier cosa que necesites en la vida, siembra una semilla y ésta volverá de regreso a ti.Siempre hay un retraso entre la siembra y la cosecha.
Hay una temporada entre la siembra y la cosecha. ¿Qué sucede mientras se retrasa el tiempo? Está siendo probada tu fe.

¿Vas a ser fiel dando cuando tienes poco? ¿Vas a seguir haciendo lo correcto? ¿Vas a hacer lo que Dios quiere que hagas, sin importar el costo y luego ver lo que Dios hace?

Ready, Set—Wait

“The LORD is good to everyone who trusts in him, so it is best for us to wait in patience—to wait for him to save us.”

Lamentations 3:25-26 (GNT)

When life seems to be falling apart, your best and most “spiritual” response may surprise you: Get alone with God, and wait.

The Bible tells us in Lamentations 3:28, “When life is heavy and hard to take, go off by yourself. Enter the silence. Bow in prayer. Don’t ask questions: Wait for hope to appear. Don’t run from trouble. Take it full-face. The ‘worst’ is never the worst” (MSG).

Most of us don’t know how to “enter the silence.” We’re always anxious. We don’t like to wait on God because it stresses us out. We like to be in control.

What does it mean to wait on God? You sit down, close your mouth, and just listen. You may read your Bible. You may pray. But most of all, you’re quiet in front of God.

Anxiety comes when we’re not “waiting for hope to appear,” as Jeremiah tells us. God wants to talk to us. He wants to give us the hope we crave. But we’re way too busy to hear him.

If we want to listen to God and experience the hope he has for us, then we have to get alone with him. We must “enter the silence” and be ready to hear him.

Jesus said in Matthew 6:6, “Find a quiet, secluded place so you won’t be tempted to role-play before God. Just be there as simply and honestly as you can manage. The focus will shift from you to God, and you will begin to sense his grace” (MSG).

Get honest with God, and your focus will shift from just seeing your problems—no matter how overwhelming they seem—to God’s grace.

Lamentations 3:25-26 says, “The LORD is good to everyone who trusts in him, so it is best for us to wait in patience—to wait for him to save us” (GNT). 

Before you go out and try to solve your problem on your own, let God save you. No matter what obstacle you’re facing, you’ve got to wait for his timing. He’ll time your next move perfectly.

Get still, and listen. Then, wait for hope to appear.

Talk It Over

Can you think of a time in your life when acting too quickly led to a disastrous outcome?
Why is it difficult to wait for God when you’re struggling through difficult times?
What needs to change about your schedule and priorities so that you can get before God, be quiet, and wait?

Are you ready to find rest in God?

The first step is to make peace with God by accepting Jesus as your Lord and Savior. You can start by praying this simple prayer:

“Dear God, I don’t want my sin to separate me from you any longer. You have promised that if I believe in Jesus, you’ll forgive me for everything I’ve ever done wrong, you’ll show me the purpose of my life, and you’ll accept me into your family and bring me to heaven one day to live with you for eternity.

“Jesus, I confess my sin, and I believe you are my Savior. I trust you when you say salvation comes by grace, through faith, and not by anything I do. I ask you to come into my life as my Lord. Today, I commit my life to you.

“I want to live the way you created me to live—at peace—and to use the remainder of my life to serve you. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.”

¡No te Des por Vencido!

“Es por esto que nunca nos damos por vencidos. Aunque nuestro cuerpo está muriéndose, nuestro espíritu va renovándose cada día. Pues nuestras dificultades actuales son pequeñas y no durarán mucho tiempo. Sin embargo, ¡nos producen una gloria que durará para siempre y que es de mucho más peso que las dificultades!”. 2 Corintios 4:16-17 (NTV)

La diferencia entre personas fieles e infieles es que las personas infieles se rinden a la primera señal de dificultad. Las personas fieles persisten aun en las dificultades. Las personas fieles son determinadas. Las personas fieles son diligentes. Las personas fieles son persistentes. Las personas fieles no saben cómo darse por vencidas. ¿Ya sabes cómo una pequeña bellota se convierte en un roble? Un roble es sólo una bellota que se negó a darse por vencida.

No soy tan inteligente, pero sí sé una cosa: Siempre es demasiado pronto para darse por vencido. No eres un fracaso, y siempre es demasiado pronto para rendirte. Dios usa a veces tiempos difíciles para probar nuestra persistencia.

Cuando empezamos Saddleback, prediqué el primer sermón a una persona: mi esposa. Ella pensó que era demasiado largo. ¡Treinta y un años después, ella sigue diciendo que mis sermones son demasiado largos!

Cuando empezamos la iglesia pensé que conseguiríamos un edificio rápidamente. Estuvimos 15 años sin un edificio. En los primeros 13 años de esta iglesia, se utilizaron 79 instalaciones diferentes. ¿Sabes cuántas veces quise darme por vencido? ¡Cada lunes por la mañana! Pero no sé cómo darme por vencido. Y Dios dijo: “Rick, si nunca te doy un edificio, aún seguirás sirviéndome?” Y dije: “¡Por supuesto!”.

Saddleback creció a más de 10.000 personas antes de construir nuestro primer edificio. ¿A ti te gustaría tener que armar y desarmar una iglesia para 10.000 personas cada semana? No hay nada de gloria en eso. Es un trabajo duro. Dios usa los tiempos difíciles para probar nuestra persistencia.

Si estás pasando por momentos difíciles en este momento, entonces este versículo es para ti: “Todo esto es para beneficio de ustedes, y a medida que la gracia de Dios alcance a más y más personas, habrá abundante acción de gracias, y Dios recibirá más y más gloria. Es por esto que nunca nos damos por vencidos. Aunque nuestro cuerpo está muriéndose, nuestro espíritu va renovándose cada día. Pues nuestras dificultades actuales son pequeñas y no durarán mucho tiempo. Sin embargo, ¡nos producen una gloria que durará para siempre y que es de mucho más peso que las dificultades!” 2 Corintios 4: 15-17 (NTV).

Dios está más interesado en lo que te estás convirtiendo que en lo que estás pasando. Él a menudo permite, las dificultades, las tribulaciones y los problemas en tu vida para enseñarte diligencia, determinación y carácter. ¿Vas a continuar sirviendo a Dios, incluso cuando la vida sea difícil?

“Así que no nos cansemos de hacer el bien. A su debido tiempo, cosecharemos numerosas bendiciones si no nos damos por vencidos” Gálatas 6:9 (NTV).

Let It All Out

“He has made my skin and flesh grow old. He has broken my bones. He has besieged and
surrounded me with anguish and distress. He has buried me in a dark place, like those long dead . . . And though I cry and shout, he has shut out my prayers.”

Lamentations 3:4-6, 8 (NLT)

We all go through a time when our lives seem to be falling apart. We lose our job. A relationship falls apart. Someone dies. Our health takes a turn for the worse.

In those times, we’re tempted to think God has abandoned us—but he hasn’t.

The prophet Jeremiah was in the same boat when he wrote the book of Lamentations. His country, Judah, endured an economic tailspin and was terrorized by a foreign enemy. He witnessed incredible inhumanities committed against his people. People were out of work and starving to death.

Where did Jeremiah start? He told God how he felt: “[God] has made my skin and flesh grow old. He has broken my bones. He has besieged and surrounded me with anguish and distress. He has buried me in a dark place, like those long dead . . . And though I cry and shout, he has shut out my prayers” (Lamentations 3:4-6, 8 NLT).

Jeremiah felt like God had forgotten him. But Jeremiah didn’t ignore what he was feeling. He didn’t sugarcoat the situation. He told God what was on his heart. In fact, Jeremiah spent five chapters telling God what he thought about the situation. He told God, “This stinks!”

Why would God put that kind of passage in the Bible? He wants you to know that he can handle your anger, your gripes, and your grief. Jeremiah spends an entire book of the Bible blowing off steam. If God was big enough to handle Jeremiah’s pain, then he’s big enough to handle yours too.

If you swallow your emotions, then you just hurt yourself. Your stomach will keep score!

Instead, unload your emotions on God.

When my kids were little, they’d throw temper tantrums, but that didn’t make me love them any less. It reminded me that my kids were immature. They didn’t know what I knew. God doesn’t love you any less when you throw a temper tantrum. He doesn’t owe you an explanation, but he is never afraid of what you have to say.

So tell him how you feel. Your honesty and humility with him will be the beginning of your healing.

Talk It Over

What is going on in your life that you’ve been afraid to talk to God about?
Why is it sometimes difficult to be honest with God about our struggles?
Try writing a letter to God about your struggles. How does it help to put those words on paper? What can you more easily say to God by writing rather than speaking?

Las Personas Fieles Sirven a los Demás

“ Dios, de su gran variedad de dones espirituales, les ha dado un don a cada uno de ustedes. Úsenlos bien para servirse los unos a los otros ”. 1 Pedro 4:10 (NTV)

Dios usa mis talentos para probar mi generosidad. Tienes que decidir en la vida por quién o por qué vas a vivir. Vas a vivir una vida miserable y egoísta o vas a vivir para algo más grande que tú mismo —el Reino de Dios.

Las personas fieles no viven para sí mismas. Saben que los talentos que Dios les dio no son para su propio beneficio; son para hacer del mundo un lugar mejor.

Cuando Dios te hizo, Él te dio toda clase de dones, talentos, y habilidades —Le llamamos F.O.R.M.A. (Formación espiritual, Oportunidades, Recursos, Mi personalidad, Antecedentes). Estas cinco cosas te hacen ser tú mismo. Y Dios te hizo así. No existe nadie como tú en todo este mundo, y Él quiere que seas tú mismo para Su gloria.

Dios te formó para que le sirvas, y sólo hay una forma de hacerlo: sirviendo a otros.

Las personas fieles saben que sus talentos no son para su propio beneficio. Puedes tener algún talento para el arte y dices “yo sólo lo hago porque amo hacerlo”. Está bien, pero eso no es un motivo suficiente. Dios no te dio habilidades artísticas sólo para que ames hacerlo. Él te lo dio, así que tienes que usar tu arte de alguna forma que pueda ayudar a otras personas.

Algunos de ustedes tienen habilidad para arreglar cosas. Algunos de ustedes son buenos para la matemática. Algunos de ustedes son buenos para concretar negocios. Algunos de ustedes son buenos para la música. Algunos de ustedes son buenos organizando. Algunos de ustedes son buenos podando y son buenos en la jardinería.

Dios nos hizo diferentes a todos, por eso todas las cosas en este mundo se hacen. Si a todos nos gustara hacer lo mismo, muchas cosas no se harían, se dejarían de hacer.

Eres el administrador de tu talento, y Dios te está observando, viendo si estás usándolo eficazmente en la Tierra. Si lo estás usando eficazmente en la Tierra, Él te dará más responsabilidad en el Cielo.

¿Alguna vez has pensado en porqué Dios no solo nos creó y luego nos llevó al Cielo? ¿Por qué Él nos puso aquí en este planeta estropeado por el pecado, por 80 o 90 años? Él te puso aquí porque la vida es una prueba, una tarea administrativa, es una asignación temporal. Él está observando si eres fiel al usar lo que Él te dio aquí en la Tierra para bendecir a otras personas.

La Biblia dice en 1 Pedro 4:10 “Dios, de su gran variedad de dones espirituales, les ha dado un don a cada uno de ustedes. Úsenlos bien para servirse los unos a los otros” (NTV). Dios te dio talentos, y Él está observando si estás siendo fiel con ellos.

Reflexiona sobre esto:  

¿Cómo estás usando tus talentos para servir a otros?Prueba tus motivos en todo lo que haces. Por ejemplo, ¿estás sirviendo en algún lugar donde puedes ayudar a otros y glorificar a Dios o sólo recibes la gloria para ti mismo.Si todavía no has confiado en Jesús y no te has comprometido a seguirlo, ¿por qué esperar más?
