Sometimes the Change Is Gradual

“And the Lord—who is the Spirit—makes us more and more like him as we are changed into his glorious image.”

2 Corinthians 3:18 (NLT)

You need more power than just willpower in your life. You need God’s power.

The fruit of the Spirit is the qualities that God puts in your life when the Holy Spirit lives in you: “love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control” (Galatians 5:22-23 NLT).

How does God produce the fruit in your life? Not by willpower. You could go out and say, “I’m going to be a more patient person!” but that doesn’t mean it’s going to work.

The Holy Spirit has to grow it on the inside. You try to say, “I’m going to be more patient. I’m going to be more loving.” It’s like tying some oranges on a eucalyptus tree and calling it an orange tree. It doesn’t work that way. The fruit of the Spirit can only come from the inside—God’s Spirit living through you.

How does the Holy Spirit work in your life? The answer is gradually: “And the Lord—who is the Spirit—makes us more and more like him as we are changed into his glorious image” (2 Corinthians 3:18 NLT).

When God wants to make a mushroom, he takes six hours. When God wants to make an oak tree, he takes 60 years. The question is: Do you want your life to be a mushroom or an oak tree?

You didn’t collect your hurts, habits, and hang-ups overnight. The things we most want to change usually developed in us over years. Someone approached me once and said, “Pastor Rick, I need you to solve my marriage problem.” I said, “How long have you been married?” Fifteen years. “How long have you had this problem?” Ten years.

And you want a five-second answer? It isn’t going to happen! You’ve got to peel that onion one layer at a time.

The Holy Spirit works within us to make us gradually more and more like him. Our character is the sum total of our habits. Our responsibility is to develop new habits that reflect his work in us.

God proved his goodness through his Son, Jesus Christ. The Bible says, “For God loved the world in this way: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Anyone who believes in him is not condemned, but anyone who does not believe is already condemned, because he has not believed in the name of the one and only Son of God” (John 3:16–18 CSB).

Are you ready to trust God to fulfill his promise of eternal life? If so, start by praying this simple prayer: “Dear God, I believe Jesus Christ is your Son. I confess I have sinned, and I ask for your forgiveness. I believe that Jesus died to take away my sins and that you raised him to life. I want to trust Jesus as my Savior and follow him as Lord from this day forward. Guide my life and help me to do your will. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.”

¿Por qué la Vida es tan Dura?

“Todos nosotros nos hemos extraviado como ovejas; hemos dejado los caminos de Dios para seguir los nuestros”. Isaías 53:6 (NTV)

Todo parece ser una batalla. Nada es fácil. El hecho es que la vida es difícil.  Así que, ¿por qué la vida es tan dura en este mundo? La Biblia dice que la rebelión contra Dios dañó todo.

Todo empezó con la primera pareja, Adán y Eva, en el Jardín del Edén. Cuando Dios creó el mundo, todo era perfecto. Era el paraíso. Y Adán y Eva no tenían problemas, sufrimiento, tristeza, tentaciones o problemas.

Pero un día, Adán y Eva decidieron que querían hacer lo que ellos querían hacer. Dios les dijo: “Pueden hacer lo que quieran en este paraíso excepto una cosa”. ¿Y qué hicieron Adán y Eva? La única cosa que Dios les dijo que no hicieran.

¿Por qué incluso darles una opción? Porque sin una opción, no podían elegir amar a Dios. Si estás obligado a amar a Dios, entonces no es un amor verdadero.

Romanos 5:12 dice, “Por medio de un solo hombre el pecado entró en el mundo y por medio del pecado entró la muerte” (NVI). Antes del pecado, no había muerte en el mundo. No había tristeza en el mundo. No había dolor. No había ninguna dificultad en el mundo. La gente no moría. Adán y Eva podrían haber vivido para siempre mientras hubiera un ambiente perfecto. Pero todo se arruinó cuando el pecado trajo la muerte al mundo.

Adán y Eva no fueron los únicos que hicieron esa elección. Yo lo he hecho, tú lo has hecho, y todos los demás en el mundo lo han hecho. Todos hemos dicho: “Yo no quiero hacer lo correcto; quiero hacer lo fácil” Todos hemos dicho “No quiero decir la verdad, quiero decir lo que es conveniente”  Todos lo hemos dicho: “Yo no quiero ser lo que Dios quiere que yo sea, quiero ser lo que yo quiero ser”.  Todos hemos hecho esto.

La Biblia dice en Isaías 53:6 “Todos nosotros nos hemos extraviado como ovejas; hemos dejado los caminos de Dios para seguir los nuestros” (NTV).

Todos hemos quebrantado las leyes de Dios. Todos nos hemos rebelado por los pecados, transgresiones e iniquidades. Y es por eso que nada funciona correctamente —tu matrimonio, tu salud, tus finanzas, tu cuerpo, tus relaciones. Nada funciona correctamente, porque el pecado dañó todo.

Cuando entiendes por qué la vida en el mundo es tan dura, ya no vas a estar sorprendido por ello. No te vas a sorprender cuando las cosas no salgan bien. No vas a estar sorprendido cuando los planes no resulten. No vas a estar sorprendido cuando las cosas vayan realmente mal. Y serás capaz de manejar los tiempos difíciles de la vida mucho más fácilmente.

Entonces ¿Por qué la vida es tan difícil? ¿Por qué sufrimos? ¿Por qué es todo una batalla? La respuesta es que la rebelión contra Dios dañó todo.

It’s Time to Change Your Mind

“You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had.”

Philippians 2:5 (NLT)

Changing your life requires new thinking. The battle to change the defects in your life is always a mental battle. It starts in the mind—and that’s where the battle is won or lost.

Ephesians 4:23 says, “Let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes” (NLT).

You’re not going to change until your thoughts and attitude change. This is why a daily quiet time is important. The time you spend intentionally studying God’s Word and in conversation with him through prayer is the spiritual renewal in your mind. Even with the Holy Spirit, it takes spiritual discipline to have the power to change. You have to get to know God so you know what he expects from you and desires for you.

Do you know what the theological term for “change of mind” is? It is the word “repentance.” To repent literally means to change your mind.

The word “repent” is actually a Greek word: metanoia. Metanoia means to change your mind—to turn from death to life, sin to forgiveness, guilt to peace of mind, hell to heaven. You turn from “my way” to God’s way. The most positive change in your life will be when you repent of your sin and turn from regret to forgiveness and peace of mind.

You have to learn to think in new ways about your defects. Defects are often strengths being misused. That’s a new way of thinking. You probably never thought of that, but that’s repentance! That’s a change of mind. Your defects are often the strengths God gave you that are being misused.

You have to change the way you think so you can make the most of your strengths instead. To do that, you “must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had” (Philippians 2:5 NLT).

God wants you to learn to think like Jesus. How do you do that? Again, it’s a choice. You’ve got to make a choice and say, “Lord, how would Jesus think about this?” The more you fill your mind with God’s Word, the easier that’s going to be.

Cambiar Requiere una Comunidad Honesta

“Ya que han oído sobre Jesús y han conocido la verdad que procede de él, desháganse de su vieja naturaleza pecaminosa y de su antigua manera de vivir, que está corrompida por la sensualidad y el engaño. En cambio, dejen que el Espíritu les renueve los pensamientos y las actitudes. Pónganse la nueva naturaleza, creada para ser a la semejanza de Dios, quien es verdaderamente justo y santo”. Efesios 4:21-24 (NTV)

Para cambiar los defectos de tu vida, tienes que tener gente que te diga la verdad. No vas a poder estar bien por tu cuenta, vas a necesitar a otras personas en tu vida. Vas a necesitar apoyo. Vas a necesitar un grupo pequeño. El cambio requiere de una comunidad honesta.

Hay algunas cosas en tu vida que nunca vas a poder cambiar por tu propia cuenta, por lo general son aquellas más difíciles y que no quieres que nadie conozca.

Nunca superarás esas cosas hasta que las compartas con alguien. No tienes que decirle a todo el mundo. Sólo tienes que encontrar una persona que va a confiar en ti y en quien tú confíes —alguien confiable, que te ama incondicionalmente, que no será crítico, y orará por ti. Revelar tus sentimientos es el principio de la sanidad.

Esto no significa un grupo pequeño en el que se reúnen en un nivel superficial y todo el mundo está “bien” o “le va genial”. En tu grupo pequeño hay que llegar al nivel de madurez donde se pueda decir: “He tenido una semana muy dura. Mi vida se está derrumbando. Lo que me está pasando es esto… “.

“ Así que dejen de decir mentiras. Digamos siempre la verdad a todos porque nosotros somos miembros de un mismo cuerpo” Efesios 4:25 (NTV).

Si eres un creyente, también eres un miembro. Perteneces a la familia de Dios, y todo creyente es parte de ti. No puedes ser lo que Dios quiere que seas hasta que pertenezcas a un grupo con el que se comparte a un nivel profundo, una comunidad honesta. Desecha la falsedad. Habla con tu prójimo. Dile a tu amigo la verdad, porque nos pertenecemos unos a otros.

Si en serio deseas cambiar las más profundas obsesiones de tu corazón, los defectos más oscuros de tu vida, vas a tener que enfrentar el miedo de ser honesto. Tienes que dejar de fingir. Tienes que desechar la falsedad. Tienes que ser real.

Tú puedes ir por la vida con una de dos opciones: pretender que tienes todo bajo control o que estás en proceso de controlarlo. Pero jamás tendrás todo controlado si es que sólo pretendes tenerlo. Y nunca vas a ponerte bien, sanarte, deshacerte de eso que te molesta en tu vida hasta que hables con alguien sobre esto.

Change Is a Choice

“Continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.”

Philippians 2:12-13 (NIV)

It’s not enough to want to change. It’s not even enough to say, “I have a dream of changing.” Dreams are worthless unless you wake up and actually act on them. You’re not going to change the problems in your life until you choose to change.

How are you going to be different in six months? Are you going to be emotionally stronger? Are you going to be mentally sharper? Are you going to be physically healthier? Are you going to be more spiritually mature?

It isn’t going to happen automatically. You aren’t just going to get healthier by accident in any category of your life. A lot of times we think we’re waiting on God to change us. You’re not waiting on God. God is waiting on you.

There is no growth in your life without change. There is no change without loss. And there is no loss without pain. You’ve got to let go of some old stuff, and it’s not always going to be easy.

Some of you are stuck right now because you haven’t learned how to let go. That’s a choice. Ephesians 4:22 says, “Throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which is corrupted by lust and deception” (NLT).

You might say that your defects are from your circumstances or your chromosomes. But it doesn’t really matter where they come from. You need to deal with them. Genetics explains your inclinations, but it doesn’t excuse your sin.

Here’s the good news: Once you become a believer, you have a new power in you that is greater than those old tendencies. That power is the Holy Spirit.

Philippians 2:12-13 says, “Continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose” (NIV).

Does that mean you are supposed to be afraid of God? Of course not! It means be afraid that you’ll miss God’s best and waste your life. Be afraid that you will go your entire life and never know God’s purpose.

The secret to changing your life is not willpower. It’s God giving you the will and the power through the Holy Spirit to do what needs to be done.

Cambiar Requiere El Espíritu Santo

Necesitas más poder que la fuerza de voluntad en tu vida. Necesitas el poder de Dios en tu vida.

El “fruto del Espíritu”, son las cualidades que Dios pone en tu vida cuando el Espíritu Santo vive a través de ti. Estos son amor, alegría, paz, paciencia, amabilidad, bondad, fidelidad, humildad y dominio propio.

¿Cómo Dios produce el fruto en tu vida? No es por la fuerza de voluntad. Tú no sales y dices, “¡Soy una persona más paciente!” Así no funciona.

El Espíritu Santo lo hace crecer dentro de ti. Trata de decir, “Soy más paciente. Soy más amoroso”. Esto no funciona de esta manera. El Fruto puede venir solo de adentro —Su Espíritu viviendo a través de ti.

¿Cómo el Espíritu Santo trabaja en tu vida? La respuesta es gradualmente: “El Señor, quien es el Espíritu, nos hace más y más parecidos a él a medida que somos transformados a su gloriosa imagen” 2 Corintios 3:18 (NTV).

Cuando Dios quiere hacer un champiñón, Él toma seis horas. Cuando Dios quiere hacer un roble, Él toma 60 años. La pregunta es: ¿Quieres que tu vida sea como un champiñón o como un roble?

No acumulaste tus heridas, hábitos y complejos de la noche a la mañana. ¡Tomó bastante tiempo convertirte en lo que eres!

Alguien se acercó a mí una vez y me dijo, “Pastor Rick, necesito que me ayude a resolver el problema en mi matrimonio”. Le dije: “¿Cuánto tiempo has estado casado? Quince años. ¿Hace cuánto has tenido este problema? Diez años. ¿Y tú quieres  una respuesta en cinco segundos? No puede ser. Tienes que pelar la cebolla una capa a la vez”.

El Espíritu Santo trabaja dentro de nosotros para convertirnos gradualmente más y más como Él. Tu carácter es la suma total de tus hábitos. Tu responsabilidad es desarrollar nuevos hábitos para cambiar.

The Power of Eternal Thinking

“Since we are his children, we will possess the blessings he keeps for his people, and we will also possess with Christ what God has kept for him; for if we share Christ’s suffering, we will also share his glory. I consider that what we suffer at this present time cannot be compared at all with the glory that is going to be revealed to us.”

Romans 8:17-18 (GNT)

A famous Harvard study once showed a direct connection between long-term thinking and success. It revealed that the more people focus on short-term gain, the more likely they are to fail. Those who focus on what “feels good” right now are doomed to be unsuccessful.

For Christians, this should be obvious. When we talk of long-term thinking, we call it eternity. We’re not thinking 40 or 50 years into the future. We’re thinking trillions and trillions of years into the future.

Living with eternity in mind will make you the most successful person possible. When you think long-term—when you consider what God has in store for you in eternity—you can handle the momentary problems that come your way.

Romans 8:17-18 says, “Since we are his children, we will possess the blessings he keeps for his people, and we will also possess with Christ what God has kept for him; for if we share Christ’s suffering, we will also share his glory. I consider that what we suffer at this present time cannot be compared at all with the glory that is going to be revealed to us” (GNT).

If you’re a follower of Christ, one day you’ll be rewarded for what you’ve done with what you’ve been given. Use your talents, time, treasure, and influence for God’s purposes, and you’ll be rewarded for those choices. The verses above also say we’ll be rewarded in heaven for what Jesus did: “We will also possess with Christ what God has kept for him.” 

You’ve got a lot to look forward to in heaven. Your current pain and problems may hurt for a while—but it’s just a little while compared to eternity.

It’s not easy to be a believer. It’s not easy to do what’s right. Sometimes it’s not easy to tell others about Jesus. It’s not easy to tithe. But the benefits of following Jesus and obeying what he teaches will far outlast the pain and discomfort.

Don’t focus only on instant results and your present troubles. You’ve got too much to look forward to in eternity to settle for short-term thinking.

Cambiar Requiere un Nuevo Pensamiento

Los cambios en tu vida requieren un nuevo pensamiento. La batalla para cambiar los defectos en tu vida es siempre una batalla mental. Se inicia en la mente, y se gana o se pierde allí.

Efesios 4:23 dice, “dejen que el Espíritu les renueve los pensamientos y las actitudes“ (NTV). Tú no vas a cambiar hasta que cambies tus pensamientos y tu actitud. Esta es la razón por lo que un tiempo devocional diario es importante. El tiempo que dedicas a estudiar intencionalmente la Palabra de Dios y en la oración, esa es la renovación espiritual en tu mente. Si tú no estás haciendo eso, tú no vas a tener el poder de cambiar.

¿Sabes cuál es el término teológico de “cambio de mente”? Es la palabra “arrepentimiento”. Arrepentirse literalmente significa cambiar de opinión.

La palabra “arrepentirse” es en realidad una palabra griega, metanoia. Metanoia significa cambiar de opinión, a su vez de la muerte a la vida, del pecado al perdón, de la culpa a la paz de la mente, del Infierno al Cielo, caminar a la manera de Dios. El cambio más positivo en tu vida será cuando te arrepientas de tu pecado y pases del arrepentimiento a la paz mental y el perdón.

Tienes que aprender a pensar en nuevas formas sobre tus defectos. Muchas veces los defectos son fortalezas mal utilizadas. Esa es una nueva forma de pensar. Probablemente nunca pensaste en eso, ¡pero eso es el arrepentimiento! Eso es un cambio de mente. Tus defectos son a menudo las fortalezas que Dios te dio pero mal utilizadas.

Tienes que cambiar tu forma de pensar. Filipenses 2:5 dice: “Tengan la misma actitud que tuvo Cristo Jesús” (NTV).

Dios quiere que aprendas a pensar como Jesús. ¿Cómo lo haces? De nuevo, es una elección. Tienes que tomar una decisión y decir: “Señor, ¿cómo pensaría Jesús sobre esto?”. Cuanto más llenes tu mente con la Palabra de Dios, más fácil va a ser.

Facing Fear? Change Your Focus

“Those who are led by God’s Spirit are God’s children. For the Spirit that God has given you does not make you slaves and cause you to be afraid; instead, the Spirit makes you God’s children, and by the Spirit’s power we cry out to God, ‘Father! my Father!’ God’s Spirit joins himself to our spirits to declare that we are God’s children.”

Romans 8:14-16 (GNT)

When I was a kid, I didn’t get scared often. I played fearlessly. But whenever I did get scared, I always cried out to my dad. I knew I could depend on him. He was strong, and he could take on anyone.

That’s what you and I are called to do when we’re scared, too: Call out to our Father for help.

Stop focusing on your fear. Focus on God your Father instead. Ask him for help! Romans 8:14-16 says, “Those who are led by God’s Spirit are God’s children. For the Spirit that God has given you does not make you slaves and cause you to be afraid; instead, the Spirit makes you God’s children, and by the Spirit’s power we cry out to God, ‘Father! my Father!’ God’s Spirit joins himself to our spirits to declare that we are God’s children” (GNT).

The antidote to fear is the truth that you are no longer a slave but a child of God. Being a child of God changes everything. You’re part of a family now. And families take care of one another.

Let’s say you grew up in a big city, and your family was a part of the family—the Mafia. And, as a kid, someone starts to assault you. You could say, “Wait just a minute! Do you know who I am? My father is Guido. Are you sure you want to touch me? Because I’m in the family.” 

That’s what God wants you to know when you’re scared. You’re part of his family, and he takes care of his children. He has your back. And he has all the power in the world—all the power you’ll need to face whatever makes you afraid.

Knowing you’re a child of the Creator of the universe changes everything.

When you’re afraid, you need to be reminded of who you are and the family you belong to. With the Holy Spirit’s help, all you have to do is call out to your Father. You can depend on him!

What scares you more than anything else right now?
What is the truth about that situation? How is God engaged in the situation?
How has God provided for you in the past when you’ve been afraid? How does remembering that help you face your fear today?

El Cambio Requiere Tomar Decisiones

“Ya que han oído sobre Jesús y han conocido la verdad que procede de él, desháganse de su vieja naturaleza pecaminosa y de su antigua manera de vivir, que está corrompida por la sensualidad y el engaño. En cambio, dejen que el Espíritu les renueve los pensamientos y las actitudes. Pónganse la nueva naturaleza, creada para ser a la semejanza de Dios, quien es verdaderamente justo y santo”. Efesios 4:21-24 (NTV)

No es suficiente el querer cambiar. No es suficiente el desear cambiar. No es suficiente decir: “Yo tengo un sueño de cambiar”. Los sueños son inútiles a menos que despiertes y, empieces a actuar para lograrlos. No vas a modificar las fallas en tu vida hasta que decidas cambiar.

¿Qué tan diferente vas a ser en seis meses? ¿Vas a ser emocionalmente más fuerte? ¿Vas a estar mentalmente mejor? ¿Vas a estar físicamente más saludable? ¿Vas a estar espiritualmente más fuerte?

Este cambio no va a suceder de forma automática. No vas a estar más saludable por accidente en cualquier faceta de tu vida. Muchas veces pensamos que estamos esperando en Dios para que nos cambie. No estás esperando en Dios. Dios está esperando por ti.

En la vida no hay crecimiento sin cambio, y no hay cambio sin pérdida, y no hay pérdida sin dolor. Tienes que dejar de lado algunas cosas viejas.

Algunos de ustedes están atrapados en este momento porque no han aprendido a deshacerse de lo viejo. Esto es una decisión. Efesios 4:22 dice, “desháganse de su vieja naturaleza pecaminosa y de su antigua manera de vivir, que está corrompida por la sensualidad y el engaño” (NTV).

Podrías decir que tus defectos son biológicos o sociológicos. Algunos de ellos son causa de tus circunstancias o tus cromosomas. Pero en realidad no importa de dónde vienen. Tienes que lidiar con ellos. La genética explica tus inclinaciones, pero no excusa tu pecado.

Esta es la buena noticia: Una vez que te conviertes en un creyente, tienes un nuevo poder en ti que es más grande que esas viejas tendencias. Ese poder es el Espíritu Santo.

Filipenses 2:12-13 dice: “Esfuércense por demostrar los resultados de su salvación obedeciendo a Dios con profunda reverencia y temor. Pues Dios trabaja en ustedes y les da el deseo y el poder para que hagan lo que a él le agrada” (NTV).

¿Eso quiere decir que se supone que debes tener miedo de Dios? ¡Por supuesto que no! Es tener miedo de que te pierdas lo mejor de Dios y desperdicies tu vida. Tener miedo de que pases toda tu vida y nunca conozcas el propósito de Dios.

El secreto para cambiar tu vida no es la fuerza de voluntad. Es Dios que te da la voluntad y el poder a través del Espíritu Santo para hacer lo que tienes que hacer.
