Learn to Relax in Your Limitations

“We have this treasure from God, but we are like clay jars that hold the treasure. This shows that the great power is from God, not from us.”

You’re always going to get discouraged when you try to be a superhero and do more than is humanly possible. You need a more realistic view of yourself: You can’t fix everybody’s problems. You can’t be in more than one place at one time. You can’t do everything you want to do. You can’t spend money you don’t have.

You need to learn to relax in your limitations. Anytime you live outside of the limitations of your life, you’re going to get discouraged. It’s easier to fill your schedule than it is to fulfill your schedule. It’s always easier to get in than it is to get out. It’s easier to make a promise than to keep a promise. It’s always easier to get into debt than it is to get out of debt.

Often the first signs of overextending show up in your body. The apostle Paul says in 2 Corinthians 4:7, “We have this treasure from God, but we are like clay jars that hold the treasure. This shows that the great power is from God, not from us” (NCV). In other words, you need to know your limits. You need to recognize your warning signs when you’re overextended and realize you’re just the vessel and God is the power.

Our bodies are like clay jars—we’re all a little cracked because we’ve all been dropped here and there. But God often puts his greatest gifts in the weakest people, and that gives us the opportunity to point back to him and say, “That’s got to be God. That could have only happened through God’s power.”

Throughout history, God has used flawed instruments to put his glory on display. Nothing would get done if God only used perfect people—because there aren’t any!

You may think it’s best to hide your weaknesses, but God wants to use them in your life. But first, you’ve got to recognize and respect your limitations. Then, you trust in God’s power and not your own to accomplish his purpose for you.

Talk It Over

Have you been trying to accomplish more in your life than is humanly possible? What has been the result physically and spiritually?
In what ways have you seen God use your weaknesses to help you grow spiritually and become more like him?
Where have you overextended yourself? How can you recognize your limits and set more realistic expectations going forward?

Will you follow Jesus today?

God proved his goodness through his Son, Jesus Christ. The Bible says, “For God loved the world in this way: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16 CSB).

Are you ready to trust God to fulfill his promise of eternal life? If so, pray this simple prayer: "Dear God, I believe Jesus Christ is your Son. I confess I have sinned, and I ask for your forgiveness. I believe that Jesus died to take away my sins and that you raised him to life. I want to trust Jesus as my Savior and follow him as Lord from this day forward. Guide my life and help me to do your will. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen."

Cuando Sientes Deseos de Darte por Vencido

“Debido a su fe, todas esas personas gozaron de una buena reputación, aunque ninguno recibió todo lo que Dios le había prometido. Pues Dios tenía preparado algo mejor para nosotros, de modo que ellos no llegaran a la perfección sin nosotros”. Hebreos 11:39-40 (NTV)

No es fácil vivir por fe. Vivimos en un mundo imperfecto. El clima ha cambiado. Nuestros cuerpos se han deteriorado. Nuestras relaciones personales son conflictivas.

Cuando Dios expulsó a Adán del huerto, le dijo a Adán que la vida sería difícil. Y lo es. Hay una batalla cósmica en el interior y en el exterior de tu vida. Luchas contra tu propia naturaleza pecaminosa. También luchas contra el propio Satanás, que lo único que quiere es, “robar, matar y destruir”.

Y a veces nos afecta. Sólo queremos rendirnos.

Pero en Hebreos 11, Dios nos anima a resistir, porque Dios no se ha olvidado de nosotros y cumplirá sus promesas algún día. Promete darnos un futuro y una esperanza (Jeremías 29:11). Promete limpiarnos las lágrimas (Apocalipsis 7). Y nos hace muchas otras promesas a lo largo de su Palabra.

Hebreos 11 menciona una serie de héroes bíblicos que demostraron fe en las promesas de Dios —Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moisés, David, Gedeón, Sansón y otros. Aunque soportaron muchas dificultades, siguieron adelante en su camino espiritual.

Después Hebreos 11:39-40 dice, “Debido a su fe, todas esas personas gozaron de una buena reputación, aunque ninguno recibió todo lo que Dios le había prometido. Pues Dios tenía preparado algo mejor para nosotros, de modo que ellos no llegaran a la perfección sin nosotros” (NTV).

Vivir por fe involucra el dolor. Si te das por vencido cuando la vida no está bien, tú nunca aprenderás a confiar en Dios. ¿Por qué crees que es así?Es fácil amar a Dios y servirle cuando la vida va bien. ¿Confiarás en Él cuando no sea así?Si todavía no has confiado en Jesús y no te has comprometido a seguirlo, ¿por qué esperar más? It’s Not About You

“Our message is not about ourselves. It is about Jesus Christ as the Lord. We are your servants for his sake.”

2 Corinthians 4:5 (GW)

The more you lead a self-focused life, the more you’re prone to discouragement. Every time you forget that it’s not about you, you’re going to get prideful or fearful or bitter. Those feelings will always lead to discouragement because they keep you focused on yourself.

The Bible says in 2 Corinthians 4:5, “Our message is not about ourselves. It is about Jesus Christ as the Lord. We are your servants for his sake” (GW).

It’s not about you! God put you on this earth, and he has a message he wants to declare to the world through you. But your life message is not about you. It’s about Jesus Christ.

I chose those four words—“It’s not about you”—to start The Purpose Driven Life because that’s the most countercultural message you could give in today’s world. Nearly everything in society—songs, video games, TV shows, news stories, and advertisements—says you’ve got to think about yourself first.

Sometimes I wish I hadn’t put that sentence in the book because I had no idea that, for the rest of my life, I was going to be constantly tested on that phrase. I have to repeat it to myself 20 times a day! When someone praises me, criticizes me, misjudges me, or disagrees with me, I have to remind myself, “It’s not about me.” Why? Because when I focus on me, I’m going to get discouraged.

Instead, as Paul says in today’s verse, we are servants for Jesus’ sake. That means we are motivated to serve others because of what Jesus has done for us.

God is always more interested in why you’re doing what you’re doing than he is in what you’re actually doing. He cares about the motivations of your heart. Why you’re doing something always determines how long you’re going to do it. If you’re motivated by selfish ambition, that will never be good enough. You’ll eventually get discouraged and quit.

But when you’re motivated to do something because of how it advances the Gospel and glorifies Jesus, you will have the encouragement you need to see it through.

Para Ser tu Mejor Versión, Dale lo Mejor a Dios

“Por esta razón, te recuerdo que avives el fuego del don espiritual que Dios te dio cuando te impuse mis manos. Pues Dios no nos ha dado un espíritu de temor y timidez sino de poder, amor y autodisciplina”. 2 Timoteo 1:6-7 (NTV)

Cuando Timoteo se unió a Pablo en su viaje misionero, Timoteo era todavía muy joven. Pablo lo envió a una ciudad llamada Éfeso para ayudar a iniciar y dirigir una iglesia. Aunque Timoteo luchó con el miedo, Dios lo usó.

Aquí hay tres lecciones que puedes aprender de Timoteo sobre cómo cumplir con el llamado de Dios en tu vida.

Desarrolla los dones que Dios te dio.

La Biblia dice: “No permitas que nadie te subestime por ser joven. Sé un ejemplo para todos los creyentes en lo que dices, en la forma en que vives, en tu amor, tu fe y tu pureza. . . No descuides el don espiritual que recibiste mediante la profecía que se pronunció acerca de ti cuando los ancianos de la iglesia te impusieron las manos. Presta suma atención a estos asuntos. Entrégate de lleno a tus tareas, para que todos vean cuánto has progresado” 1 Timoteo 4:12, 14-15 (NTV).

Pablo también le dijo a Timoteo que “Por esta razón, te recuerdo que avives el fuego del don espiritual que Dios te dio cuando te impuse mis manos. Pues Dios no nos ha dado un espíritu de temor y timidez sino de poder, amor y autodisciplina” 2 Timoteo 1:6-7 (NTV).

Como creyente, tienes la responsabilidad durante toda tu vida de desarrollar los talentos y dones que Dios te ha dado.

Niégate a distraerte.

Pablo le dice a Timoteo en 1 Timoteo 4:16: “Ten mucho cuidado de cómo vives y de lo que enseñas. Mantente firme en lo que es correcto por el bien de tu propia salvación y la de quienes te oyen” (NTV).

Es fácil desviarse por el deseo de construir tu negocio, tu familia, tu carrera o tus ahorros. Y mucha gente pierde incontables horas de su vida en el Internet y en sus teléfonos. Como seguidor de Jesús, debes enfocarte en mantener las cosas más importantes para poder cumplir con tu llamado.

Dale a Dios lo mejor de ti.

La Biblia dice: “Pelea la buena batalla por la fe verdadera. Aférrate a la vida eterna a la que Dios te llamó y que declaraste tan bien delante de muchos testigos” 1 Timoteo 6:12 (NTV). Dios te ha llamado a una tarea específica, y solo se puede lograr cuando le das lo mejor de tu tiempo, esfuerzo, dones y enfoque.

Pablo dice acerca de Timoteo: “No cuento con nadie como Timoteo, quien se preocupa genuinamente por el bienestar de ustedes” Filipenses 2:20 (NTV). ¿Te imaginas un epitafio mayor? No había nadie más en el mundo como Timoteo. Estaba enfocado. Estaba comprometido con el llamado de Dios en su vida. Nadie podía distraerlo ni desanimarlo, y le dio a Dios lo mejor de sí.

A medida que le das lo mejor a Dios y sigues tu llamado, Dios también sacará lo mejor de ti.

Be Who God Created You to Be

“We don’t try to trick anyone or distort the word of God.”

2 Corinthians 4:2 (NLT)

Nothing is more discouraging than trying to be something you’re not.

If you maintain a façade because you’re afraid that other people might find out who you are or that God might not love you, then you’re going to miss out on God’s best for your life.

God does not bless fakes or phonies. If you want God’s blessing on your life, stop living for the approval of other people and start being who God made you to be. God didn’t create you to be somebody else. When you get to heaven, he isn’t going to ask, “Why weren’t you more like your sister or the popular kid or your successful friend?” He’s going to hold you accountable for how you fulfilled his purposes for your life.

The world doesn’t need two of you or anybody else. But the world does need you to do the work God has for you on earth. He shaped you and gifted you in a unique way, and we’re all missing out if you’re determined to be anyone but yourself.

Paul says in 2 Corinthians 4:2, “We don’t try to trick anyone or distort the word of God” (NLT). In other words, we’re not putting on a disguise or a phony mask. We’re not pretending we’re something we’re not. And we don’t twist the Word of God. Instead, we teach the truth plainly, showing everyone who we really are.

Nothing is more discouraging than trying to please everybody. I’ve been on the cover of Newsweek magazine twice, once as the hero and once as a zero. That’s just life!

Even God can’t please everyone. When somebody’s praying for a snow day, someone else is praying for blue skies.

If you’re always trying to be something you’re not, you’re always going to be under stress and fear being exposed, and you’re going to be prone to discouragement.

To defeat discouragement, just be who God made you to be. You don’t have to be perfect for God to bless you—just be authentic.

Nunca es Demasiado Tarde para Seguir el Llamado de Dios

“Tengo ochenta y cinco años. Estoy tan fuerte hoy como cuando Moisés me envió a esa travesía y aún puedo andar y pelear tan bien como lo hacía entonces.  Así que dame la zona montañosa que el Señor me prometió” . Josué 14:10-12 (NTV)

Nunca es demasiado tarde para seguir el llamado de Dios en tu vida.

Después de que Moisés envió 12 espías a la Tierra Prometida, regresaron e informaron que la tierra era un lugar demasiado duro para que el pueblo de Dios se asentara. Y debido a su incredulidad, los israelitas vagaron por el desierto durante otros 40 años. Toda una generación murió porque no creyeron en las promesas de Dios. Pero Caleb y Josué creyeron, así que pudieron vivir.

Cuando los israelitas regresaron a la Tierra Prometida 40 años después, Caleb dijo: “Tengo ochenta y cinco años. Estoy tan fuerte hoy como cuando Moisés me envió a esa travesía y aún puedo andar y pelear tan bien como lo hacía entonces.  Así que dame la zona montañosa que el Señor me prometió” Josué 14:10-12 (NTV).

“Dame la zona montañosa”, ¡me encanta! La tierra que Caleb quería estaba llena de gigantes y ciudades fortificadas con grandes murallas. Le estaba diciendo a Dios: “Dame la tarea más grande. Dame la ciudad más difícil. Dame el lugar con los gigantes más grandes. Dame las regiones montañosas. No quiero un lugar fácil. Sé que tengo 85 años, pero aún puedo hacer grandes cosas por ti”.

Cuando fui a comprar una tarjeta de cumpleaños para mi nieta, noté algo que nunca había visto en la sección de tarjetas de cumpleaños. ¡Ahora tienen una sección completa que ofrece tarjetas de cumpleaños para los cumpleaños 80, 85, 90, 95 e incluso 100! Al crecer, no vi ese tipo de tarjetas, porque la mayoría de las personas no vivían tanto tiempo. Pero ahora, la esperanza de vida es mucho mayor.

Hay una palabra que no está en la Biblia: jubilación. Puedes dejar de trabajar, pero sigues sirviendo al Señor. Tienes más sabiduría y experiencia ahora que cuando eras más joven, y Dios no va a desperdiciar eso.

A la edad de 85 años, Caleb comenzó la mayor misión de su vida. Moisés tenía 80 años cuando Dios lo llamó para liberar al pueblo de Dios. Abraham tenía 79 años cuando recibió el llamado de Dios.

Si estás en la generación de Caleb, tienes que saber que nunca es demasiado tarde para comenzar con el llamado de tu vida. Lo mejor está por venir.

How to Defeat Discouragement

“It is God himself, in his mercy, who has given us this wonderful work of telling his Good News to others, and so we never give up.”

2 Corinthians 4:1 (TLB)

Do you know that God loves you? Maybe you’ve heard that truth all your life!

But if you know God loves you, do you sense and recognize God’s love? When you stop believing you are loved by God, you can start to get discouraged. Why? Because if you don’t believe God loves you, then you can’t experience his grace and mercy.

The best way to defeat discouragement is to remember how much God loves you and to stay focused on that truth.

“It is God himself, in his mercy, who has given us this wonderful work of telling his Good News to others, and so we never give up” (2 Corinthians 4:1 TLB).

What is mercy? Mercy is when God gives you what you need, not what you deserve. Mercy is when God knows every mistake you’ve made and will ever make, and he still gives you every good thing in your life. God’s mercy is what keeps you going when you feel hopeless or worn down or discouraged.

A lot of people who have been Christians for a long time don’t sense God’s love because they only think God speaks to them in a critical voice. But if the voice you’re listening to is always negative, it’s not God.

God made you to love you. The number one purpose of your life is not for you to do good. The number one purpose of your life is not even for you to love God back.

The number one purpose of your life is to let God love you. When you do that and experience his mercy and grace, you’ll be free to pursue all that he has planned for your life.

Sigue el Llamado de Dios, a Pesar de los Detractores

“¿Por qué el Señor nos está llevando a esta tierra solo para que muramos en batalla? ¡A nuestras esposas y a nuestros hijos se llevarán como botín! ¿No sería mejor volvernos a Egipto?»”. Números 14:3 (NTV)

En 1979, estaba terminando el seminario en Fort Worth, Texas, cuando sentí que Dios me llamaba al sur de California para comenzar la Iglesia Saddleback. Le conté a un amigo a quien respetaba lo que pensaba que Dios quería que hiciera.

Él dijo: “Rick, esa es la idea más tonta que he escuchado. Vas a California y nunca más se sabrá nada de ti. No va a suceder.” ¡Él derramó agua fría sobre mi sueño!

Cada vez que te tomes en serio el uso de tu vida de la manera en que Dios quiere que la uses, algunas personas se opondrán. Satanás arrojará todo lo que pueda sobre ti para evitar que cumplas con tu llamado.

Una de las razones por las que tan pocas personas realmente cumplen con el llamado de Dios es porque no están dispuestas a ir en contra de la opinión popular. Si deseas seguir el llamado de Dios en tu vida, debes estar dispuesto a rechazar los consejos negativos, sin importar de quién provengan.

La Biblia dice en Números 14:2-3: “¿Por qué el Señor nos está llevando a esta tierra solo para que muramos en batalla? ¡A nuestras esposas y a nuestros hijos se llevarán como botín! ¿No sería mejor volvernos a Egipto?»” (NTV).

Cuando se enfrentaron a circunstancias difíciles, los israelitas decidieron que preferían el cautiverio en Egipto a la libertad en la Tierra Prometida. En lugar de hacer lo que Dios les había llamado a hacer, querían volver a su antigua forma de vida.

Pero uno de sus líderes, Caleb, tenía una valentía fuera de lo común. Decidió que iba a enfrentar sus desafíos con la ayuda de Dios, incluso si tenía miedo. Estaba dispuesto a rechazar los consejos negativos para seguir el llamado de Dios.

De hecho, Caleb no solo recibió consejos negativos; también fue amenazado físicamente. Números 14:10 dice: “Toda la comunidad comenzó a decir que apedrearan a Josué y a Caleb. Entonces la gloriosa presencia del Señor se apareció a todos los israelitas en el tabernáculo” (NTV).

La presencia de Dios salvó a Caleb y a Josué. Eso también pasará en tu vida.

Cuando persigues el llamado de Dios en tu vida, siempre te encontrarás con detractores. Así que toma la decisión desde ahora de rechazar los consejos negativos. Y cuenta con la presencia de Dios para ayudarte.

Are You Hiding God’s Word on Your Shelf or in Your Heart?

“I've banked your promises in the vault of my heart so I won't sin.”

Psalm 119:11 (MSG)

The more of God’s Word you get into your mind, the more defenses you will have against persistent temptation.

In fact, the Bible is part of your emergency kit for temptation. The Bible calls this “hiding God’s Word in your heart.” The Message paraphrase of this verse says, “I’ve banked your promises in the vault of my heart so I won’t sin” (Psalm 119:11).

You hide God’s Word in your heart, or memorize it. Then, when Satan tempts you, you say, “That’s not right, because I know that God says this.” When Satan came to Jesus in the wilderness, he gave Jesus three big temptations. Every time Satan tempted him, Jesus quoted a Bible verse back to him. If this is the approach Jesus used to resist Satan, then it’s the same one you should use too.

When Satan tempts you, you don’t want to pull out the Bible app on your phone and say, “Now, I know somewhere in here, there’s a verse that says not to do that.” That’s not helpful. But when you have God’s Word memorized, then the Holy Spirit can remind you of its truth.

You have to start memorizing God’s Word if you want to have an effective tool for victory over the persistent temptations in your life. If you know the areas in which you are most vulnerable to temptation, then you can find the verses in the Bible that talk about those things. Then you write those verses down on an index card and read them over and over until you have them memorized.

There is no shortcut to learning the discipline of memorizing Scripture. You just have to start and then be persistent, trusting God to help you learn and remember everything you need for spiritual growth.

The Bible is worthless to you when it’s sitting on the shelf in your home. But with God’s Word in your mind, it becomes a powerful weapon to fight every temptation Satan can throw at you. Start today by finding some Bible verses that will help you in the areas where you’re weak.

Then bank them in the vault of your heart.

Cómo Superar el Desánimo

“Entonces el pueblo de Judá comenzó a quejarse: «Los trabajadores se están cansando, y los escombros que quedan por sacar son demasiados. Jamás podremos construir la muralla por nuestra cuenta»”. Nehemías 4:10 (NTV)

El desánimo es curable. Cuando me desanimo, me dirijo directamente al libro de Nehemías. Este gran líder del antiguo Israel entendió que había cuatro razones para el desánimo.

Primero, te fatigas. Simplemente te cansas como lo hicieron los trabajadores en Nehemías 4:10: “Entonces el pueblo de Judá comenzó a quejarse: «Los trabajadores se están cansando, y los escombros que quedan por sacar son demasiados. Jamás podremos construir la muralla por nuestra cuenta»” (NTV).

Los seres humanos se desgastan. No puedes quemar la vela por ambos extremos. Si estás desanimado, es posible que no tengas que cambiar nada importante en tu vida. ¡Puede que solo necesites descansar! A veces, lo más espiritual que puedes hacer es tomar una siesta.

En segundo lugar, te frustras. Nehemías dice que había escombros por todas partes, tanto que estorbaba para reconstruir el muro. ¿Tienes “escombros” en tu vida? ¿Has notado que cada vez que comienzas a hacer algo nuevo, los escombros (las frustraciones que te impiden trabajar hacia tu meta) comienzan a acumularse?

Si no lo limpias periódicamente, detendrás tu progreso. No puedes evitarlo, por lo que debes aprender a reconocerlo y deshacerte de eso rápidamente para no perder el enfoque en tus objetivos.

Tercero, crees que has fallado. El pueblo de Nehemías no pudo terminar su tarea tan rápido como se planeó originalmente y, como resultado, su confianza se derrumbó. Pensaron: “Fuimos tontos al pensar que podríamos reconstruir este muro”.

¿Pero sabes lo que hago cuando no alcanzo una meta a tiempo? Vuelvo a establecer una nueva meta, no me rindo. Todo el mundo falla; todo el mundo hace cosas tontas.

El problema no es que hayas fallado; es cómo respondes a tu fracaso.

¿Te rindes a la autocompasión? ¿Empiezas a culpar a otras personas? ¿Empiezas a quejarte de lo imposible? ¿O te reenfocas en las intenciones de Dios y comienzas a moverte de nuevo?

Finalmente, cedes al miedo. Ceder al miedo conduce al desánimo. Nehemías 4 sugiere que las personas más afectadas por el miedo son aquellas que se juntan con personas negativas. Para controlar los pensamientos negativos en tu vida, evita a las personas negativas tanto como puedas.

Tal vez estés desanimado por el miedo y digas: “No puedo con esto. Es demasiada responsabilidad”. Tal vez sea el miedo a las críticas. O crees que no mereces tener éxito. El miedo destruirá tu vida si lo dejas. Pero puedes elegir resistir el desánimo diciendo: “Dios, ayúdame a apartar mis ojos del problema y las circunstancias y mantener mis ojos en ti”.

No tienes que quedarte atrapado en tu desánimo. Pídele a Dios que te ayude a descubrir el motivo, abórdalo y comienza a avanzar con confianza.

Reflexiona sobre esto:

Los “escombros” (las frustraciones que te impiden trabajar hacia tu meta) pueden desperdiciar tu tiempo y energía y evitar que logres lo que Dios te ha llamado a hacer. ¿Cuáles son los escombros en tu vida?¿Cómo puedes reducir la negatividad que te mantiene desanimado?¿Has abandonado alguna meta por desánimo? ¿Cómo puedes reenfocarte para que puedas lograr lo que Dios te ha llamado a hacer?Si todavía no has confiado en Jesús y no te has comprometido a seguirlo, ¿por qué esperar más?
