How Should Christians Measure Success?

“Without faith it is impossible to please God.”

Hebrews 11:6 (NIV)

I would rather attempt to do something great with my life and fail than attempt to do nothing with my life and succeed.

Yet, that’s where most people are! They’re drifting through life. They have no goals. They’re not aiming for the moon because they’re so afraid they’re just going to hit the fencepost. People have forgotten or never understood that failure is not the same as being unable to do something. Failure is being unwilling to try.

When Kay and I started Saddleback more than 40 years ago, I told my family many times that I wanted these four words written on my tombstone: “At least he tried.” The jury was still out on whether or not our little church would last.

I had a great goal and vision. And even if I never reached it, I wanted it to be known that I at least tried. I can’t put that on my tombstone today because the plan worked, by God’s grace. But in the early days of a project or business or ministry, it’s okay for you to say, “At least I tried.”

That is faith. You move forward in spite of your fears. The Bible says in Matthew 9:29, “According to your faith let it be done to you” (NIV). When you move forward and show God you’re willing to trust him with the unknown, you are choosing how much God will bless your life.

Life is a marathon. People do not run a marathon to get first place. Only one person out of the thousands running can get first place. They run a marathon to finish and be able to say, “I did it. I tried!”

You’re not going to be number one in most things in life, and neither am I. What really matters is this: Did you finish the race strong, or did you quit too soon or coast for the latter part of your life? Did you run hard and fast for Jesus Christ until the day he took you home?

Hebrews 11:6 says, “Without faith it is impossible to please God” (NIV). Faith means you try. You set a goal, take risks, and work hard. Whether or not you reach your goal or challenge is irrelevant.

When you attempt something for the glory of God, you can’t be considered a failure, no matter what happens. If you’re doing something in faith, then you’re already a success.

Elige la Fe por encima del Temor

“Fue por la fe que Moisés salió de la tierra de Egipto sin temer el enojo del rey. Siguió firme en su camino porque tenía los ojos puestos en el Invisible”. Hebreos 11:27 (NTV)

Moisés hizo algunas resoluciones intencionales sobre cómo vivir su vida, y es importante que tú también lo hagas. Una de las resoluciones de Moisés fue esta: eligió vivir por fe en lugar de vivir por temor.

Te enfrentarás a la misma elección. ¿Escogerás vivir por fe o por temor?

La Biblia dice en Hebreos 11:27, “Fue por la fe que Moisés salió de la tierra de Egipto sin temer el enojo del rey. Siguió firme en su camino porque tenía los ojos puestos en el Invisible” (NTV).

Moisés fue al Faraón, que era el hombre más poderoso del mundo, y le dijo: “¿Conoces a esos esclavos que están construyendo todas tus pirámides? Me los llevo y nos vamos todos. Ya no vas a tener mano de obra esclava. Deja ir a mi gente”.

Moisés tenía todas las razones para tener temor. Estaba de pie contra el hombre más poderoso del planeta. En aquellos días, el faraón era considerado un dios, y cualquier cosa que el faraón dijera era la ley.

Y aquí viene Moisés, diciendo: “No vamos a hacer más lo que dices. No te tengo temor porque dependo de una autoridad superior”. ¡Se necesitaron algunas agallas para hacer eso!

¿Quieres el mismo tipo de fe en tu vida para que puedas superar tu temor? Cuanto más te acerques a Dios, más te llenarás de fe. Cuanto más te alejes de Dios, más te llenarás de temor.

No puedo dejar de enfatizar la importancia de la fe para el resto de tu vida. La Biblia dice: “Si haces algo que crees que está mal, pecas” Romanos 14:23 (NTV).

¿Cuántas veces pecaste esta semana? Mucho. Yo también. Cualquier cosa que hice que no fue hecha con fe, que hice en duda, fue un pecado.

La Biblia también dice: “Sin fe es imposible agradar a Dios” Hebreos 11:6 (NTV). ¿Cuántas veces agradaste a Dios esta semana?

¿Quieres que algo cambie en tu vida? Deja de quejarte y empieza a creer. Dios no se conmueve con quejas. Dios es movido por la fe: “Debido a su fe, así se hará” Mateo 9:29 (NTV). Tu fe tiene un gran impacto en lo que Dios hace en tu vida.

Aquí está la clave: lo que importa no es el tamaño de tu fe sino el tamaño de nuestro Dios. ¡Un poco de fe en un gran Dios obtiene grandes resultados!

When Love Is Your Motivation, There Is No Fear

“Where God's love is, there is no fear, because God’s perfect love drives out fear.”

1 John 4:18 (NCV)

A lot of people think the opposite of fear is faith. It’s not! The opposite of fear is love.

Love moves against fear. When love comes in the front door of your heart, fear goes out the back door. You can’t be afraid and loving at the same time—not with real love. When you have real love—God’s love—then you don’t have to fear.

People don’t run into a burning building to rescue children because of faith. They do it because of love. Parents will put their lives at risk to protect their families because they love their children.

If love is the motivation of everything you do, then fear is going to disappear.

“Where God’s love is, there is no fear, because God’s perfect love drives out fear” (1 John 4:18 NCV).

Maybe something you have to do is making you nervous. When you start feeling fear rise up in you, you need to pause at that moment. Then focus on how much God loves you. You may need to remind yourself out loud: “God, you really love me! You’re on my side. You want me to succeed in this. I’m going to do it in your strength and with your love.”

God doesn’t want you to fail. He wants you to succeed at what you’re doing and fulfill your purpose. When you focus on his love, you won’t be afraid. Perfect love casts out all fear!

When I speak in front of thousands of people every weekend, I’m not afraid. Why? Because I do two things: I focus on God’s love for me, and then I focus on my love for my church family. They are not an audience to be feared. They are a family to be loved. My love for them and for Jesus overcomes any fear I might have when I preach.

When you’re fearful, you’re focusing totally on yourself. That’s not love! When you’re loving, you’re focused not on yourself but on what other people need.

The more loving you are, the less fearful you are. So, if you make love your motivation for what you do, you’re not going to be afraid to do it.

Make love your motivation, and move against your fear.

Talk It Over

Why is it easier to focus on yourself instead of other people?
What is one of your greatest fears about fulfilling your mission in life? What does your fear reveal about your motivations?
Can you love someone when you are focused on yourself? Why or why not?

God loves you, no matter what you’ve done.

Because we’re human, we’ve taken Satan’s bait and been hooked into sin more times than we can count. But no matter what you’ve done or where you’ve been, you’ve got a place in God’s forever family ready and waiting for you. The invitation is wide open. Just believe and receive.

Are you ready? Here’s a prayer you can start with: “Dear God, I know that when I die I’m going to give an account of my life to you directly. I confess I have ignored you. I know I have sinned against you, and I have lived by my plan, not yours. I want that to change, starting right now. I want to turn away from my sins and turn toward you.

“Thank you for sending Jesus to die for all that I’ve done wrong so I don’t have to pay the penalty. I know I don’t deserve your forgiveness. I know only your grace can save me, Lord.

“Jesus, thank you for loving me so much that you took all my guilt on yourself. You made me acceptable for heaven, and I humbly ask you to save me. I ask you to save me from the sins and the habits that are messing up my life right now. I believe in you, Jesus. And I believe you will keep your promise to save me instantly, certainly, completely, and eternally. In Jesus’ name. Amen.”

Nombra tus Valores, Luego Vive de Acuerdo con Ellos

“[Moisés] Consideró que era mejor sufrir por causa de Cristo que poseer los tesoros de Egipto, pues tenía la mirada puesta en la gran recompensa que recibiría”. Hebreos 11:26 (NTV)

¿Qué es lo que más te importa? ¿Cuáles son tres o cuatro valores principales en tu vida?

Aquí hay una decisión firme que debes tomar: elige los valores de Dios, no los del mundo. Moisés hizo esta resolución que da forma a la vida. ¡Y por eso Dios lo usó!

Hebreos 11:26 dice: “Consideró que era mejor sufrir por causa de Cristo que poseer los tesoros de Egipto, pues tenía la mirada puesta en la gran recompensa que recibiría” (NTV).

Moisés hizo un juicio de valor. Aclaró lo que más le importaba. Sabía cuáles eran sus valores principales.

Puedo nombrar fácilmente mis valores principales: integridad, humildad y generosidad. Hace mucho tiempo que decidí que quería construir mi vida sobre esas tres cosas, porque son los antídotos contra las tres trampas del liderazgo.

¿Puedes nombrar los tres valores más importantes en tu vida? Si no puedes, entonces ciertamente no puedes vivir por ellos.

Antes de dejar pasar otro día, siéntate y pregúntate: “¿Qué es lo más importante para mí? ¿Cuáles son los valores principales en mi vida?” Anótalos, porque hasta que no aclares tus valores, no podrás vivir de acuerdo con ellos.

¿Por qué es esto tan importante? Si no decides lo que es importante en tu vida, otras personas decidirán por ti. Te empujarán a su molde y vivirás tu vida según sus valores, no los tuyos.

Cuando sepas lo que es más importante para ti y vivas de acuerdo con tus valores, Dios te usará y también bendecirá tu vida.

Don’t Let the Fear of Failure Hold You Back

“God did not give us a spirit that makes us afraid but a spirit of power and love and self-control.”

2 Timothy 1:7 (NCV)

Just three months after Kay and I got married, I had a total physical and mental breakdown and ended up in the hospital. Filled with the fear of failure, I thought my life was over—though I was just 21 years old. The psychiatrist at the hospital told me I needed to take some time off.

So we went to my parents’ home in northern California, where I continued to feel like a total failure. I thought I couldn’t handle anything. Everything made me upset and nervous.

Then one night I had a dream that felt evil. I woke up in a cold sweat. As I was lying there in bed, breathing fast, I heard the phone ring. My mom picked it up. The guy on the phone said, “Is this the house where Rick Warren is? Could I talk to him?”

When I picked up the phone, the man said, “Rick, you don’t know me. We’ve never met. How I got this number doesn’t really matter. But I live in San Diego, and God told me to call you and give you this verse: ‘God did not give us a spirit that makes us afraid but a spirit of power and love and self-control’ [2 Timothy 1:7 NCV]. And, Rick, you have a right in Jesus Christ to a sound mind.” And then he hung up.

You don’t think God uses people like that? Well, he does. It could have been an angel, but it didn’t have to be. Maybe God just said to a man: “Call that guy.” And, in obedience, he did.

I held on to that verse during my year of depression when I felt like such a failure, even though my life had barely even started. But God wasn’t done with me, and he’s done countless things in my life since then.

God is not done with you either. It doesn’t matter what you’ve been through. I’m sorry for all the pain you may have experienced, but you cannot let fear hold you back. Push yourself to trust God in everything you do. Then live in faith and love.

Para Tener Beneficios a Largo Plazo, Elige el Dolor a Corto Plazo

“[Moisés] Prefirió ser maltratado con el pueblo de Dios a disfrutar de los placeres momentáneos del pecado”. Hebreos 11:25 (NTV)

Si vas a ser bueno en algo, si vas a tener ganancias a largo plazo, debes aceptar el dolor a corto plazo. Cualquiera que haya practicado algún deporte lo sabe. Para terminar en un juego de campeonato, debes trabajar duro y practicar durante muchas horas.

Pero no solo es cierto en los deportes. Es cierto en las finanzas y en las relaciones. Tengo un buen matrimonio, pero Kay y yo hemos trabajado duro durante años. No fue fácil. Para hacer que tu matrimonio funcione, tienes que esforzarte, como cualquier otra cosa en la vida.

Muchos de tus problemas provienen de tu incapacidad para retrasar la gratificación. La sociedad te enseña a decir: “Lo quiero todo y lo quiero ahora. Y quiero que sea gratis y fácil”. ¡Pero la vida no funciona así!

Para experimentar una ganancia a largo plazo, debes tomar una decisión, como lo hizo Moisés: “Prefirió ser maltratado con el pueblo de Dios a disfrutar de los placeres momentáneos del pecado” Hebreos 11:25 (NTV).

Eligió ser maltratado, soportar el dolor a corto plazo por la ganancia a largo plazo de hacer lo correcto.

El dolor es parte de la vida. Y si eliges hacer lo difícil en este momento y te esfuerzas por aprender y crecer, por volverte fuerte y maduro, más adelante en la vida te beneficiarás de ello.

Por ejemplo, algunas personas se están beneficiando en este momento de las decisiones que tomaron antes en la vida de no gastar más de lo que ganaban: ahorrar, diezmar y honrar a Dios. Se están beneficiando muchos años después porque fueron disciplinados e hicieron lo difícil primero.

Cuando eliges el dolor a corto plazo como lo hizo Moisés, verás que Dios te libera para que puedas disfrutar de la recompensa a largo plazo.

Why We Don’t Give Up

“So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up.”

Galatians 6:9 (NLT)

If you want to be a righteous woman or man of God, then you have to learn how to be resilient. That means when you stumble, you get back up.

A lot of factors beyond your control can cause you to fail. But if you get back up, who knows what positive things might happen?

History books are filled with stories of people who failed again and again, but they did not give up until they succeeded.

General George Washington lost two-thirds of all the battles he fought against the British in the American Revolution. He kept retreating because he didn’t have the manpower to take on the British army. But he didn’t give up! He eventually won the war, became the first president of the United States, and is considered the father of the country.

Napoleon dominated continental Europe as Emperor of France. But earlier in his life he graduated 42nd in a class of 43. He wasn’t the smartest student, but he is regarded as a military genius, and his methods are still studied in many schools.

Albert Einstein, one of the greatest scientists of all time, didn’t say a single word until he was almost five years old. He did so poorly in school that, at age 16, he failed to pass the entrance exam for the Swiss Polytechnic School. Still, he went on to reinvent science and math.

Babe Ruth, one of the best baseball players ever, hit 714 home runs in his career, a record that stood for almost 40 years. But he also struck out 1,330 times. For years, Ruth held the records both for most home runs and for the most strikeouts.

I don’t hold up any of these men as examples of godly living. But they accomplished much in the eyes of the world because they didn’t give up. Imagine what God can do with righteous women and men who keep moving forward and working for whatever God has called them to.

“So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up” (Galatians 6:9 NLT).

Keep going, and don’t let your failure be final. You never know what God can do through you!

Enfócate en Agradar a Dios, no a las Personas

“Nuestro propósito es agradar a Dios, no a las personas. Solamente él examina las intenciones de nuestro corazón”. 1 Tesalonicenses 2:4 (NTV)

Dios te creó para ser tú. Él no te creó para ser lo que tus padres quieren que seas. Él no te creó para que seas lo que tu cónyuge, jefe o amigos quieren que seas.

Dios quiere que seas exactamente quien te creó para ser. Eso significa que tienes que negarte a ser definido por otros.

Hebreos 11:24 dice: “Fue por la fe que Moisés, cuando ya fue adulto, rehusó llamarse hijo de la hija del faraón” (NTV).

Moisés tuvo una crisis de identidad. Nació esclavo hebreo, pero se crio como realeza egipcia, nieto del faraón. Cuando creció, tenía dos opciones: podía pretender ser el nieto del faraón por el resto de su vida y vivir con lujo, fama y poder.

O podría admitir quién era en realidad: un judío. Si lo hiciera, su familia lo echaría a vivir con esclavos el resto de su vida. Sería deshonrado y humillado y viviría una vida de dolor y trabajo pesado.

¿Cuál escogerías?

La mayoría de las personas hoy en día están viviendo en una mentira. Están tratando de ser personas que no son. Pero Moisés se negó a vivir una mentira porque era un hombre íntegro. Contra todo tipo de presión de grupo, insistió en ser quien Dios lo creó para ser.

Aquí está mi pregunta para ti: ¿A quién le estás permitiendo que determine tu identidad?

Algunos tienen padres que murieron hace años, pero todavía están tratando de cumplir con sus expectativas. Algunos se aferran a lo que les dijo su exesposo o exesposa, y están tratando de demostrar que esa persona está equivocada. Algunos están tratando de mantenerse al día con lo que la cultura dice que deben ser.

Pero la Biblia dice esto: “Nuestro propósito es agradar a Dios, no a las personas. Solamente él examina las intenciones de nuestro corazón” 1 Tesalonicenses 2:4 (NTV).

Elige ser quien Dios te creó ser. Simplemente di: “No dejaré  que otras personas me presionen en su molde. Voy a hacer lo que Dios quiere que haga y cumplir el plan que Él tiene para mi vida, no el plan de otra persona para mi vida”.

Amigos, eso es tener verdadero éxito en la vida. Dios quiere que seas exactamente quien te creó para ser y nada más.

Shift Your Focus to Heaven and God’s Love

“Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes.”

Revelation 21:3-4 (ESV)

God’s plan for the universe and for you isn’t finished yet. One day, Jesus will return to complete God’s plan and take his followers to heaven.

On the night before Jesus was crucified, he gathered his followers together. Knowing they were going to watch him be tortured and crucified, he wanted to give some words of comfort.

He told them: “‘Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also’ . . . Thomas said to Him, ‘Lord, we do not know where You are going, and how can we know the way?’ Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me’” (John 14:1-6 NKJV).

The Apostle John was eventually imprisoned by the Roman empire on Patmos, an island in the Mediterranean Sea. Before he died, God gave John a glimpse of what heaven is like, and that vision is recorded in Revelation 21:3-4: “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes” (ESV).

If you believe in Jesus Christ as Savior, then you will go to be with him forever in heaven when you die. In heaven, there is no sorrow, suffering, sickness, or sin. There will be no more death.

Because of sin, everything on this earth is broken—but God says he is going to make it all new in heaven. You won’t have to worry about your trials or troubles, your health or relationships. But when you see things from God’s point of view—looking through the lens of eternity—you’ll realize how much attention we give to things on earth that don’t last and will not matter in eternity.

Instead, behold how much God loves you and focus on how much he has promised to those who trust in his Son, Jesus Christ.

Shifting your focus starts with trusting your Savior

The Bible says, “It is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast” (Ephesians 2:8-9 NIV).

If you’re ready to commit your life to him, then pray this prayer:

“Dear God, I know I’m a sinner, and I ask for your forgiveness. I believe Jesus Christ is your Son. I believe that he died for my sin and that you raised him to life. Jesus, I want to trust you as my Savior and follow you as Lord from this day forward. Guide my life and help me to do your will. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.”

¿Cómo puedes Saber que Dios te Ama?

“El Señor es bueno con todos; desborda compasión sobre toda su creación”. Salmo 145:9 (NTV)

Una de las cosas que me irritan son las regaderas que ahorran agua. ¡No las soporto! Solo sale un chorrito. No es una ducha; ¡es una gotera! Soy bastante robusto, y me toma mucho tiempo mojarme con una gotera.

¡No le llames ducha a menos que sea una ducha!

Por eso creo tan importante lo que la Biblia nos dice sobre el amor de Dios.

La Biblia dice que, “El Señor es bueno con todos; desborda compasión sobre toda su creación” Salmo 145:9 (NTV).

El amor de Dios por ti no es una gotera. La Biblia dice que Dios nos desborda con su amor. Él no es tacaño como las regaderas que ahorran agua.

Salmo 42:8 dice, “Pero cada día el Señor derrama su amor inagotable sobre mí…” (NTV).

Cuando uso aderezo para ensalada, no soy de las personas que toman un poco con el tenedor para darle un toquecito de sabor. ¡Yo lo derramo en la ensalada! ¡Algunas veces parece que quiero más aderezo que ensalada!

Así es el amor de Dios para ti. Dios vierte su amor sobre ti todo el tiempo. Él no aprueba todo lo que haces, pero te ama incondicionalmente.

¿Cómo puedes saber que Dios te ama?

Dios está atento a cada detalle de tu vida. Él observa cada instante de tu vida desde tu concepción. Él ha visto cada logro, caída, los momentos buenos, malos y feos, nunca te ha quitado la vista de encima. Dios pone atención a todos los detalles.
Eso es lo que hace el amor. Pones atención a todo lo que amas.Dios actúa de parte tuya.
El amor se trata de dar. Cuando amas a las personas, conviertes sus problemas en tus problemas.
Jesús hizo eso. Él se apropió de tus problemas antes de que supieras que los tenías. De hecho, el resolvió tu problema más grande al morir por ti en la cruz antes de que nacieras. El amor es acción. Y Jesús toma la iniciativa de parte tuya antes de que estés consciente de que lo necesitas. Él vino a ser tu Salvador.

En la historia de la Navidad, la Biblia dice, “Hoy ha nacido en la Ciudad de David un Salvador, que es Cristo el Señor” Lucas 2:11 (NVI).

¡Tú necesitas un Salvador! Si no lo necesitaras, Dios no hubiera enviado a Jesús.

Si existiera cualquier otra forma de que pudieras llegar al Cielo, créeme, Dios no hubiera enviado a Jesús a morir sin propósito alguno. Y ese es el ejemplo de amor más grande —que alguien dé su vida por otro.

Reflexiona sobre esto:

¿Cómo has visto a Dios derramar su amor sobre ti?Dios está atento a cada detalle de tu vida, y actúa en tu favor. ¿Cómo puedes aplicar esos mismos dos principios a tus relaciones?¿Qué dice de Dios el hecho de que Él vea cada detalle de tu vida y aún te sigue amando incondicionalmente?

No importa lo que hayas hecho o dónde hayas estado, tienes un lugar listo y esperándote en la familia eterna de Dios. La invitación está abierta. Solo cree y recibe.

¿Estás listo? Aquí hay una oración con la que puedes comenzar:

“Querido Dios, sé que cuando muera, te daré cuenta de mi vida. Sé que he pecado contra ti y he vivido según mi plan, no el tuyo. Quiero que eso cambie, comenzando ahora mismo. Quiero alejarme de mis pecados y volverme hacia ti.

Gracias por enviar a Jesús a morir por todo lo que he hecho mal, para no tener que pagar la condena. Sé que no merezco tu perdón. Sé que solo tu gracia puede salvarme, Señor. Nunca podría ser lo suficientemente bueno para entrar en un lugar perfecto.

Jesús, gracias por amarme tanto que tomaste toda mi culpa sobre ti. Me hiciste aceptable para el Cielo, y humildemente te pido que me salves y me hagas parte de tu familia para siempre. Yo creo en ti, Jesús. Y creo que cumplirás tu promesa de salvarme de manera instantánea, completa y por toda la eternidad. En el nombre de Jesús. Amén”.
