¿Servir a Dios o al dinero?

“Ningún sirviente puede servir a dos patrones… Ustedes no pueden servir a la vez a Dios y a las riquezas”. Lucas 16:13 (NVI)

Si Dios te dice que debes dar algo ahora y dices, “Dios, puedo dar cualquier otra cosa, pero no eso”, entonces tú no posees esa cosa —eso te posee. Dios probará que está realmente primero en tu vida al pedirte que sueltes aquello que abrazas más fuertemente.

Lucas 16:13 dice, “Ningún sirviente puede servir a dos patrones… Ustedes no pueden servir a la vez a Dios y a las riquezas” (NVI).

Tienes que decidir a quién o a qué vas a servir, y tu entrega reflejará tu decisión. Si Dios es el señor de tu vida, entonces Él debe ser el Señor de tu billetera, también.

Hubo una vez un hombre rico que dio a causas cristianas mucho más del diezmo. Él dijo que se encontró con un asesor financiero años atrás. Después de que hablaron por un tiempo, el asesor financiero tomó una hoja de papel y dibujó una caja, y por fuera de ella puso un signo de dólar representando el dinero y una cruz representando a Cristo. Él dijo, “Escucho dos cosas que están compitiendo por tu atención. No puedo ayudarte a planear tu vida hasta que me digas cuál de esas cosas quieres en el centro de esa caja, que representa tu vida”. El rico lo pensó por un momento y dijo: “Quiero a Cristo en el centro de mi vida”. Ese fue el punto de inflexión –ahí fue cuando él comenzó a invertir en la eternidad.

Si alguien viene a ti, dibuja una caja y pregunta qué hay en el centro de tu vida, ¿qué responderías? ¿Tu estado de cuenta respalda tu respuesta? Puedes decir que algo ocupa el primer lugar en tu vida, pero la manera en la que gastas tu tiempo y tu dinero revela la verdad.

Hay dos elecciones clave en tu vida cuando se trata de finanzas: quién será tu amo y dónde pondrás tu dinero —en la eternidad o en el aquí y el ahora.

“Más bien amontonen riquezas en el cielo, donde la polilla no destruye ni las cosas se echan a perder ni los ladrones entran a robar. Pues donde esté tu riqueza, allí estará también tu corazón” Mateo 6:20-21 (NVI).

Dios no necesita tu dinero. Él quiere lo que representa: tu corazón. Puedes mostrar a Dios que Él tiene todo tu corazón al rendirle el control de tu dinero y comprometerte a dar lo que Él te diga que des en servicio a Él y a otros.

To Live Free of Fear, Surrender to God

“Surrender your heart to God, turn to him in prayer, and give up your sins—even those you do in secret. Then you won’t be ashamed; you will be confident and fearless. Your troubles will go away like water beneath a bridge, and your darkest night will be brighter than noon. You will rest safe and secure, filled with hope and emptied of worry."

Job 11:13-18 (CEV)

How do you learn to live in God’s love so that you can live free of fear? You have to surrender your heart to God every day.

The Bible says in 1 John 4:18, “Where God’s love is, there is no fear, because God’s perfect love drives out fear” (NCV).

When you wake up each morning, before your feet hit the floor, you have to say, “God, before I even start this day, I surrender my emotions to you. I want you to be Lord of my feelings. I want you to control my mind and my emotions. I surrender my heart to you. I want you to fill me with your love.”

Job 11:13-18 says, “Surrender your heart to God, turn to him in prayer, and give up your sins—even those you do in secret. Then you won’t be ashamed; you will be confident and fearless. Your troubles will go away like water beneath a bridge, and your darkest night will be brighter than noon. You will rest safe and secure, filled with hope and emptied of worry” (CEV).

Those verses hold three commands and eight promises. Every promise has a premise—God says if you do this, then he’ll do that.

First, he gives you the commands: Surrender your heart to God every day. Turn to him in prayer. Give up your sins, confessing them to God.

Then notice the eight benefits: You won’t be ashamed. You’ll be confident. You’ll be fearless. Your troubles will be like water under the bridge. The dark night you’re going through will be brighter than noon. You’ll be able to sleep well because you are safe and secure. You will be filled with hope. You’ll be emptied of worry.

Wow! Who wouldn’t want to experience those benefits?

Take a moment to write that Scripture on a piece of paper and put it somewhere you’ll see throughout the week. Let it remind you to do those three things—surrender your heart to God, turn to him in prayer, and confess your sins. Then let God’s love fill your life and cast out all your anxiety and fear.

Try it this week, and then watch God carry out his promises as he fills you with his love.

Deja un Gran Ejemplo, en Lugar de una Gran Herencia

“Todos llegamos al final de nuestra vida tal como estábamos el día que nacimos; desnudos y con las manos vacías. No podemos llevarnos las riquezas al morir”. Eclesiastés 5:15 (NTV)

¿Alguna vez has oído hablar de la muerte de una persona con mucho dinero y has pensado, “cuánta riqueza dejaron”?

Aquí hay un pequeño secreto: ¡Lo dejaron todo!

Eclesiastés 5:15 dice: “Todos llegamos al final de nuestra vida tal como estábamos el día que nacimos; desnudos y con las manos vacías. No podemos llevarnos las riquezas al morir” (NTV).

Si cuando llegues al Cielo, no obtienes ningún crédito por tu riqueza y lo vas a dejar todo, entonces ¿cuál es el propósito de acumularlo aquí en la tierra?

Algunos podrían decir que tienen la intención de dejar su fortuna a sus hijos. Pero los estudios han demostrado que la mayor parte del tiempo, la riqueza heredada a la siguiente generación, causa más daño que beneficio.

Hace unos años, la revista Inc. publicó un artículo sobre si los padres deberían pasar su dinero a la próxima generación. Entrevistaron a hijos de emprendedores, muchos de los cuales dijeron que hubieran preferido que sus padres les hubieran dejado el conocimiento de cómo obtener dinero, en lugar del dinero en sí.

En otras palabras, no querían el resultado del trabajo de sus padres. Ellos querían el ejemplo de su trabajo. Ellos entendieron que no se puede apreciar por lo que no trabajas. La riqueza heredada tiende a engendrar irresponsabilidad.

Nadie tuvo más para dejar a su familia que el rey Salomón en el Antiguo Testamento. Una de las mayores riquezas de la historia. Él le dejó todo a su hijo —su riqueza, su gobierno, su poder, sus tesoros. Pero arruinó la vida de su hijo. Roboam no pudo manejar lo que él no había trabajado para sí mismo.

No es pecado querer ganar más dinero. Sin embargo, no es aconsejable acumular más dinero del que necesitas para dejarlo a alguien que no puede ser capaz de administrarlo.

En cambio, aprende a usar tu dinero sabiamente ahora. Invierte el dinero que tienes —ya sea poco o mucho— en llevar a más personas al Cielo. En lugar de dejar a tus hijos una gran herencia que no sabrán cómo administrar, déjales un ejemplo de generosidad. Cuando lo hagas, estarás haciendo una inversión para la eternidad.

When Your Feelings Are Holding You Back

“Your attitude should be the kind that was shown us by Jesus Christ."

Philippians 2:5 (TLB)

If you want to succeed in life, you must learn how to master your moods. When you’re dealing with an emotion that’s holding you back, you’ve got two options: You either change it, or you direct it.

Sometimes you need to change what you’re feeling. Some emotions are so destructive, so damaging, so hurtful, and so ineffective that the only thing you can do is change them.

Philippians 2:5 says, “Your attitude should be the kind that was shown us by Jesus Christ” (TLB).

Your attitude includes your emotions—so what you’re feeling should be the same as that of Jesus. You need to ask yourself, “How would Jesus respond in this situation? Would Jesus get irritated with this waitress? No. Would Jesus yell at that person? No. Would Jesus be up all night, wringing his hands and worrying that it isn’t going to work out? No. Would Jesus be fearful? No.”

Then you instantly dismiss any feeling that doesn’t make you more like Jesus. If Jesus wouldn’t respond to your spouse with that emotion, then you shouldn’t either. You drop that attitude, and you figure out what Jesus would do instead.

Sometimes you need to direct what you’re feeling. When my son Matthew died, I entered into the deepest possible grief you can imagine. But my wife and I decided from the first moment that we were going to channel that grief for good and use our pain to help other people. That’s one of the reasons Saddleback Church now hosts an annual conference on mental illness. I’m not about to waste a hurt I go through. I’m going to use it for good.

Your greatest ministry will not come out of your strengths and successes. Your greatest ministry is more likely to come out of your deepest pain.

What feeling is holding you back today? Name it. Then decide whether you need to change it or direct it, and then use it for good.

No Eres un Huérfano Espiritual

“Él [Dios] da alimento a quienes en él confían; jamás olvida su pacto”. Salmo 111:5 (NBV)

Cuando niños, a menudo recurrimos a uno de nuestros padres cuando tenemos una necesidad de dinero. Si lo hiciste cuando eras niño, probablemente no te preguntabas de dónde tu mamá o tu papá sacaban el dinero. Sabías que era de su trabajo. Los padres ganan dinero y los hijos se lo gastan.

Muchas personas actúan como huérfanos espirituales y olvidan que tienen un Padre Celestial: “Esas cosas dominan el pensamiento de los incrédulos, pero su Padre celestial ya conoce todas sus necesidades. Busquen el reino de Dios por encima de todo lo demás y lleven una vida justa, y él les dará todo lo que necesiten” Mateo 6:32-33 (NTV).

Nada en toda la creación se preocupa, excepto los seres humanos. Todo lo demás confía en el Creador para que se haga cargo de sus necesidades.

La preocupación es realmente solo una forma de ateísmo. Cada vez que te preocupas,  estás actuando como un ateo. Estás diciendo: “Todo depende de mí”. La preocupación es una luz de advertencia de que dudas del amor de Dios.

Salmo 111:5 dice: “Él [Dios] da alimento a quienes en él confían; jamás olvida su pacto”. La Biblia nos dice que Dios envió a Jesucristo a morir en la cruz para que pagara por tu salvación. Si Dios te ama lo suficiente para enviar a Su propio Hijo a morir por ti, ¿No te ama lo suficiente como para hacerse cargo de tus deudas? Si resolvió tu mayor problema cuando te salvó, ¿no es mucho menor cualquier otro problema que tengas?

Aquí está el resultado final: ¿Vas a creer que Dios hará lo que Él dice que hará?  Él prometió darte lo que necesitas si le das el primer lugar en tu vida. ¿Vas a creerle lo suficiente para hacer lo que Él te dice que hagas como evidencia de esa fe?

El Salmo 34 habla de ser liberados de nuestros temores cuando vemos al Señor. Cuando tienes temores acerca de tus finanzas, es porque has olvidado quién es Dios y lo que Él prometió hacer.

Si tomas en serio el ser liberado de los temores financieros, debes hacer elecciones diariamente para obedecer a Dios y confiar en Su provisión. Ahora Él está esperando que sigas la premisa de Su promesa y lo busques primero en tus finanzas.

Three Questions to Ask About Your Feelings

“From now on, then, you must live the rest of your earthly lives controlled by God’s will and not by human desires."

1 Peter 4:2 (GNT)

What are human desires? They’re your emotions and your affections. And once you become a Christ-follower, your life should be controlled by God’s will, not by how you feel.

The Bible says in 1 Peter 4:2, “From now on, then, you must live the rest of your earthly lives controlled by God’s will and not by human desires” (GNT).

When you’re angry or upset or frustrated—whatever you’re feeling—ask yourself these three questions:

“What’s the real reason I’m feeling this?” Maybe the answer is fear or worry. Maybe it relates to something a parent said to you years ago. And then when someone else says something similar, that person becomes the target of all your pent-up anger.

“Is it true?” Is what you’re feeling at that moment true? There’s a point in the Bible where Elijah gets so discouraged that he goes to God and complains, “God, I’m the only one in the entire nation of Israel left serving you.” And God challenges him, saying, “Are you kidding me? I’ve got all these people who are still serving me! You’re acting like you’re the only one trying to do the right thing in the whole world! No, that’s not true.”

“Is what I’m feeling helping me or hurting me?” Will you get what you want by continuing to feel this way? Many feelings seem beneficial, but they’re actually self-defeating.

For example, let’s say you go to a restaurant, and the service is extremely slow. You wait a long time to be served. Then a couple comes in 15 minutes after you and gets their meals before you do. You become increasingly irritated until you feel something welling up inside you. You can ask yourself today’s three questions:

What’s the real reason you’re feeling this? You’re hungry!Is it true? Yes, you’re frustrated because the service is slow.Is what you’re feeling helping you or hurting you? It’s hurting you. Getting angry with the server won’t get you better service. Does nagging ever work? When somebody tells you all the things you’re doing wrong, does it make you want to change? No, all it does is make you defensive.

So you can conclude that managing your emotions—choosing calm over anger—is the best path.

When you stop to ask yourself these three questions, you’ll get a better grip on why you feel the way you do and what you need to do to help the situation.

Don’t let your feelings control you. Choose to deal with how you feel—to manage your emotions—today.

Nunca Vale la Pena Ser Deshonesto con tus Finanzas

“Dios quiere que seas honrado en todos tus negocios”.  Proverbios 16:11 (TLA)

¿Te diste cuenta de que Dios tiene mucho que decir sobre la deshonestidad?

“Dios quiere que seas honrado en todos tus negocios” Proverbios 16:11 (TLA).

“Más vale ser pobre y honrado, que ser necio y tramposo” Proverbios 19:1 (TLA).

“De nada sirve que una persona gane en este mundo todo lo que quiera, si al fin de cuentas pierde su vida. Y nadie puede dar nada para salvarla”  Mateo 16:26 (TLA).

Si quieres la bendición de Dios en tus finanzas, tienes que ser honesto. ¡No puedes engañar a las personas!

La Biblia también dice: “La bendición del Señor enriquece a una persona y él no añade ninguna tristeza” Proverbios 10:22 (NTV). ¿Alguna vez has conocido a alguien que hizo dinero deshonestamente y que eso solo le trajo dificultades? Eso es siempre el resultado de la ganancia hecha deshonestamente. Recuerda: Cosechas lo que siembras. Si eres deshonesto con los demás, se te regresará. Si piensas que no has sido atrapado, el reloj sigue marcando. Nadie puede burlarse de Dios y escapar.

Lo que siembres, inevitablemente cosecharás. El principio de sembrar y cosechar es un poderoso recordatorio de la importancia de ser honesto con las finanzas.

A veces la presión para seguir adelante —o sólo la presión para mantenerse— es tan abrumadora que, aún como creyentes, somos tentados a comprometer nuestra ética y quizás hacer un poco de sombra a la verdad para hacer dinero. Tal vez sobrevaluamos un artículo, o tal vez no le decimos a alguien las fallas de algo que vendemos, o quizás hacemos una deducción en los impuestos que realmente no está allí. Quizás solamente no decimos la verdad en una situación.

Dios ha dicho que Él proveerá en tus necesidades, si le pides ayuda y mantienes tu integridad. No tienes que ser deshonesto para progresar.

Solo necesitas elegir ser obediente día a día. Dios ve tu corazón y tus acciones, y te bendecirá cuando elijas honrarlo en tus finanzas.

Faith, Not Feelings, Pleases God

“Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked I will depart. The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away; may the name of the LORD be praised."

Job 1:21 (NIV)

When you are a new Christian, God will often give you confirming emotions so you’ll know he’s there and he cares. But as you grow in faith, God will wean you from relying on emotions that help you believe he is present and at work in your life.

God’s omnipresence and the manifestation of his presence are two different things. One is a fact; the other is often a feeling. God is always present, even when you are unaware of him, and his presence is too profound to be measured by mere emotion.

Yes, he wants you to sense his presence—but he’d rather have you trust in his presence than feel his presence. Faith, not feelings, pleases God.

Your faith will stretch the most when life falls apart and God is nowhere to be found. This happened to Job. On a single day he lost everything—his family, his business, his health, and everything he owned. And, most discouragingly, God said nothing to Job for 37 chapters!

How do you praise God when you don’t understand what’s happening in your life and God is silent? How do you stay connected to him in a crisis without communication? How do you keep your eyes on Jesus when they’re full of tears? You do what Job did: “Then he fell to the ground in worship and said: ‘Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked I will depart. The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away; may the name of the Lord be praised’” (Job 1:20-21 NIV).

Tell God exactly how you feel. Pour out your heart to God. Unload every emotion you’re feeling. Job did this when he said, “I can’t be quiet! I am angry and bitter. I have to speak” (Job 7:11 GNT).

He cried out when God seemed distant: “Oh, for the days when I was in my prime, when God’s intimate friendship blessed my house” (Job 29:4 NIV).

God can handle your doubt, anger, fear, grief, confusion, and questions. You can take everything to him in prayer.

Talk It Over

In what ways can you demonstrate your trust in God even when you don’t feel his presence?
What are some specific things you can praise God for, even when you don’t understand what’s happening in your life?
Do you ever feel anxious about taking your doubt, anger, fear, grief, confusion, or questions to God? Why or why not?

Have you trusted God’s promise of salvation through Jesus Christ?

If you’re ready to commit your life to Jesus, then pray this prayer:

“Dear Jesus, you have promised that if I believe in you, everything I’ve ever done wrong will be forgiven, I will learn the purpose of my life, and you will accept me into your eternal home in heaven one day.

“I confess my sin, and I receive you into my life as my Lord and Savior. You have promised that if I confess my sin and trust you, I will be saved. I trust you when you say salvation comes by grace, through faith, and not by anything I do. Today I’m turning over every part of my life to your management.

“I’m grateful for your unconditional love. I want to use the rest of my life to love and serve you instead of serving myself. I commit my life to you and ask you to save me and accept me into your family. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.”

Entrega lo que más Necesites y se Multiplicará

“Recuerden esto: El que siembra escasamente, escasamente cosechará, y el que siembra en abundancia, en abundancia cosechará”.   2 Corintios 9:6 (NVI)

¿Alguna vez has notado que si siembras crítica, siempre cosechas crítica?  Si siembras bondad, cosechas bondad. Si siembras generosidad, cosechas generosidad. Si siembras energía, cosechas energía. Esto se llama principio de siembra y cosecha.

“Recuerden esto: El que siembra escasamente, escasamente cosechará, y el que siembra en abundancia, en abundancia cosechará. Cada uno debe dar según lo que haya decidido en su corazón, no de mala gana ni por obligación, porque Dios ama al que da con alegría. Y Dios puede hacer que toda gracia abunde para ustedes, de manera que siempre, en toda circunstancia, tengan todo lo necesario, y toda buena obra abunde en ustedes” 2 Corintios 9:6-8 (NVI).

Todo agricultor conoce este principio. Si un agricultor tiene cuatro sacos de semillas en su granero y ve su campo sin siembra, él no comienza a quejarse, “¡No hay cosecha —quisiera que hubiera cosecha! Él sale y comienza a sembrar las semillas. Esas semillas luego se reproducen y el agricultor obtiene más de lo que tenía cuando comenzó.

Cuando tengas una necesidad, siembra una semilla. La única manera de que el agricultor saca algo de la semilla es cuando la siembra. Si la guarda, será lo único que tendrá. Pero si la deja ir, se multiplicará.

Este principio de siembra y cosecha es cierto con tu dinero. ¡Es verdad con todo en tu vida! Puede parecer ilógico que cuando tienes una necesidad, necesitas dar. Por eso es que se requiere fe.

¿Por qué Dios lo estableció de esa manera? Porque Dios es un dador. Él es el dador más generoso en el universo, y Él quiere que tú aprendas a ser como Él. Si no aprendes a ser generoso y siempre te estás preocupando por lo que tienes en lugar de darlo, nunca serás como Cristo.

Dios dice que Él te recompensa cuando eliges ser como Él y das generosamente. “Denles a otros lo necesario, y Dios les dará a ustedes lo que necesiten. En verdad, Dios les dará la misma medida que ustedes den a los demás. Si dan trigo, recibirán una bolsa llena de trigo, bien apretada y repleta, sin que tengan que ir a buscarla” Lucas 6:38 (TLA).

Cuando acumulas tu dinero, será todo lo que tengas. Pero cuando lo das, Dios lo  multiplicará para bendecirte y para Su gloria.

God Is Real, No Matter How You Feel

“The LORD has hidden himself from his people, but I trust him and place my hope in him."

Isaiah 8:17 (GNT)

It’s easy to worship God when things are going great in your life—when he’s provided food, friends, family, health, and happy situations. But circumstances are not always pleasant. So, how do you worship God then? What do you do when God seems a million miles away?

The deepest level of worship is praising God in spite of pain, thanking God during a trial, trusting him when tempted, surrendering while suffering, and loving him when he seems distant.

The writer Philip Yancey once noted, “Any relationship involves times of closeness and times of distance, and in a relationship with God, no matter how intimate, the pendulum will swing from one side to the other.”

That’s when worship gets difficult.

To mature your friendship, God will test it with periods of seeming separation—times when it seems as if he has abandoned or forgotten you. St. John of the Cross referred to these days of spiritual dryness and doubt as “the dark night of the soul.”

King David understood days like these. Even though God called him “a man after my own heart” (Acts 13:22 NIV), David sometimes complained about God’s apparent absence:

“Lord, why are you standing aloof and far away? Why do you hide when I need you the most?” (Psalm 10:1 TLB).“My God, my God, why have you abandoned me? Why are you so far away when I groan for help?” (Psalm 22:1 NLT).“Why have you abandoned me?” (Psalm 43:2 GNT).

Of course, God hadn’t really left David, and he’ll never leave you. God has promised repeatedly, “I will never leave you; I will never abandon you” (Hebrews 13:5 GNT).

Talk It Over

What practical steps can you take to help you worship God even when you’re in pain or in a difficult season?

What are some of God’s promises that can give you hope and encouragement?

Have you trusted God’s promise of salvation through Jesus Christ?

“Dear Jesus, you have promised that if I believe in you, everything I’ve ever done wrong will be forgiven, I will learn the purpose of my life, and you will accept me into your eternal home in heaven one day.

“I confess my sin, and I receive you into my life as my Lord and Savior. You have promised that if I confess my sin and trust you, I will be saved. I trust you when you say salvation comes by grace, through faith, and not by anything I do. Today I’m turning over every part of my life to your management.

“I’m grateful for your unconditional love. I want to use the rest of my life to love and serve you instead of serving myself. I commit my life to you and ask you to save me and accept me into your family. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.”
