Four Things You Shouldn’t Do with Your Money

“Guard against every kind of greed. Life is not measured by how much you own."

Luke 12:15 (NLT)

God wants you to think smart about your money.

Jesus tells the story of a rich man who enlisted a manager to take care of his property (Luke 16). When the manager was accused of mishandling his master’s money and was called in to give an account of his stewardship, the manager devised a plan. He knew he was going to lose his job but decided to make some friends who would take care of him when he was fired. So, he summoned everyone who owed his master money and lowered their debt; if someone owed 800 gallons of olive oil, he told them to change their bill to 400 gallons.

When the master heard what the manager had done, he “had to admire the dishonest rascal for being so shrewd. And it is true that the children of this world are more shrewd in dealing with the world around them than are the children of the light” (Luke 16:8 NLT).

Jesus doesn’t praise the manager’s dishonesty, but he does praise his shrewdness. What is shrewdness? To be shrewd means you’re smart, strategic, and resourceful. You see a problem clearly, know what needs to be done, and then figure out how to do it. God wants you to learn how to be biblically shrewd with your money.

This story teaches four things you shouldn’t do with your money. 

Don’t waste your money. Luke 16:1 says, “A report came that the manager was wasting his employer’s money” (NLT). Everything you have—including your money—belongs to God and is a gift from him. So you have to be careful not to waste what belongs to your master.

Don’t love your money. You’ve got to decide if God is number one in your life or if making a lot of money is number one. You cannot make both your top priority.

The Bible says, “No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other; you will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and be enslaved to money” (Luke 16:13 NLT).

Don’t trust your money. No matter how much money you’ve got—you can always lose it. The manager learned this pretty quickly in Luke 16:3: “Now what? My boss has fired me” (NLT).

If you want to be secure, the center of your life has to be something that can never be taken from you. And there’s only one thing that you can never lose: God’s love for you.

Don’t expect your money to satisfy. If you think having more money will make you happier, more secure, or more valuable, you are seriously misguided. Money will never satisfy: “Those who love money will never have enough. How meaningless to think that wealth brings true happiness!” (Ecclesiastes 5:10 NLT).

That’s why Jesus says in Luke 12:15, “Guard against every kind of greed. Life is not measured by how much you own” (NLT).

Cuídense de la Levadura de los Fariseos

“Y dejándolos, se embarcó otra vez y se fue al otro lado del lago. Los discípulos se habían olvidado de tomar panes, y no tenían consigo en la barca sino solo un pan. Jesús les encargaba diciendo: «¡Tengan cuidado! Cuídense de la levadura de los fariseos y de la levadura de Herodes». Y ellos discutían entre sí que no tenían panes”.   Marcos 8:13-16 (NBLA)

En la Biblia, la levadura es generalmente una metáfora del orgullo y la arrogancia. ¿Por qué? Cuando tú agregas levadura a la masa, ¿qué sucede? Se esponja, y si pones mucha estalla.

Cuando cocinas no necesitas grandes cantidades de levadura. Si estás cocinando pan, no le agregas una taza de levadura. Sólo necesitas una pizca. Justamente como la levadura, no necesitas tener mucho orgullo para que este tome el control rápidamente y te meta en toda clase de problemas.

Recientemente mi esposa, Kay, y yo tuvimos lo que ustedes llamarían una discusión. Nosotros le llamamos un “combate amoroso”. Después de la discusión, escribí en mi diario, “cuando estoy lleno de orgullo, yo exagero las cosas fuera de proporción”.

Todos hacemos esto. Cuando estás lleno de orgullo, exageras las cosas fuera de proporción. De pronto cosas insignificantes verdaderamente te trastornan. Cuando eso pasa, puedes saber que estás lidiando con orgullo. Donde quiera que encuentres conflicto en cualquier parte del mundo, el orgullo siempre está involucrado.

Cuando estás lleno de orgullo, cuando tienes la levadura de los Fariseos, ¿adivina qué? No puedes ver la vida con claridad. Cuando eres orgulloso, no puedes ver lo que Dios está haciendo en tu vida.

Dios quiere advertirte sobre “la levadura de los Fariseos” para que puedas seguirlo más de cerca y puedas comprender el milagro que está obrando en tu vida. Y Él está trabajando en tu vida ahora mismo, aún cuando todavía no lo puedas ver.

Where to Find Your Life Mission

“Always remember what is written in the Book of the Teachings. Study it day and night to be sure to obey everything that is written there. If you do this, you will be wise and successful in everything."

Joshua 1:8 (NCV)

Everyone wants something to live for—but many of us look for it in the wrong places.

You can’t find your mission in a magazine, on social media, or by watching TV with friends. You can’t just guess what it is either.

You can only find God’s mission for your life in one place: God’s Word.

Studies show that each of us has 600 to 700 talents, but we never use most of them. When you embrace God’s mission for your life, though, you’ll find that he can use all the gifts and talents he’s given you.

Jonah, one of God’s prophets in the Bible, received his life mission from God. The Bible says, “The LORD spoke his word to Jonah son of Amittai: ‘Get up, go to the great city of Nineveh, and preach against it, because I see the evil things they do’” (Jonah 1:1-2 NCV).

God gave Jonah his mission. He’ll give you one too as you read his Word. The more you dig into the Bible, the more you’ll understand your mission for life.

God uses many different ways to get his Word into your life. Sometimes you sit down to read it. Other times, you may hear someone preach it. And on other days you’ll read a devotional like this one.

If the only time you open your Bible is when you’re in church, you likely will never discover God’s mission for your life.

Instead, make the Bible a regular part of your life. Spend time with God every day, even if it’s just a few minutes. Put it in your schedule—write it on your calendar, or set a daily alert on your phone.

Joshua 1:8 says, “Always remember what is written in the Book of the Teachings. Study it day and night to be sure to obey everything that is written there. If you do this, you will be wise and successful in everything” (NCV).

If you want to be successful in God’s mission for your life, stop looking for a vision and start looking for a verse.

God won’t write your mission in the sky. He has already written it in his Word.

Dios Provee en el Camino hacia el Milagro

“Mi Dios les proveerá de todo lo que necesiten, conforme a las gloriosas riquezas que tiene en Cristo Jesús”. Filipenses 4:19 (NVI)

¿Qué haces cuando te encuentras en una zanja esperando por tu milagro, y es frío, oscuro y solitario? Tal vez estás, o conoces a alguien en esa senda. Puede ser escalofriante y te puede hacer sentir inseguro, no tienes idea hacia donde te diriges, o cuanto tomará esa travesía, y comienzas a sentir la presión.

Sin importar donde te encuentres en el camino hacia tu milagro, aquí hay algunas cosas que debes recordar:

Dios es todo lo que necesitas.

Tú no necesitas del gobierno ni siquiera de un trabajo. Si Dios así lo quisiera, mandaría cuervos que te lleven comida como Su forma de proveerte. Así es como proveyó al profeta Elías cuando estaba exhausto y agotado en el desierto (1 Reyes 17:1-16). Cuando Dios cierra una oportunidad de trabajo, Él puede fácilmente abrir otra. No te confíes de tu cuenta de banco. Confía en Dios.

Donde Dios guía, Dios provee.

Después de enviar cuervos para alimentar a Elías, Dios le dijo que hiciera un peligroso viaje a Sarepta. Había una sequía en Sarepta y muy poca comida. Aún así Dios proveyó a Elías, no de una persona que había almacenado comida, sino a través de una viuda pobre con un generoso corazón (a quién Dios bendijo por su obediencia). Cuando Dios te dice que vayas a algún lado, ¡vete ahora! Cuando Dios te dice que hagas algo, hazlo inmediatamente. Cuando Dios te da dirección, Dios te dará lo que necesitas para llegar ahí.

Debes confiar en Él un día a la vez.

¿Por qué? Porque algunos de tus problemas persisten día tras día. Por ejemplo si tienes problemas financieros, tendrás que lidiar con ellos un día a la vez. Así que debemos confiar en la provisión de Dios un día a la vez.

La Biblia dice, “Mi Dios les proveerá de todo lo que necesiten, conforme a las gloriosas riquezas que tiene en Cristo Jesús” Filipenses 4:19 (NVI).

Dios te promete obrar cuando eres obediente.

Dios quiere que des un paso, y entonces Él te mostrará el siguiente paso. Quizá no te parezca lógico, pero hazlo como Dios te dice, porque las sendas de Dios son siempre las mejores. En cualquier situación de fe, Dios quiere que tú tomes el primer paso de fe.

El primer paso de fe es pedir a Jesús que tome el control de tu vida. Si nunca has hecho esto, entonces porque esperar más, haz esta oración:

“Querido Dios, gracias por amarme y por querer mantenerme dependiendo solamente de Ti y de nada más. Perdóname por haber dependido de mi trabajo y de otras personas en vez de depender de Ti. Gracias por no haberte olvidado de mí. Señor, los días que vienen por delante me pueden producir un poco de temor, pero comprendo ahora que la senda hacia el milagro es a través de territorios incómodos. Ahora comprendo que la fuente del milagro será inesperada, así que no debo estar tratando de imaginármela. Tan solo debo confiar en Ti. Cuando me digas que hacer y no siempre tenga sentido, de cualquier forma yo lo haré. Ayúdame a recordar que Tú eres todo lo que necesito, y que donde Tú guías, Tú provees. Quiero aprender a confiar en Ti un día a la vez. Quiero ir por Tu camino y no por el mío. Quiero seguirte, y pedirte que me salves y que entres en mi vida. Me apropio de tu promesa de que si yo confío en Ti; Tú te ocuparás de mis necesidades. Te pido esto en el nombre de Jesús. Amén”.

God Made You for a Mission

“God has made us what we are. In Christ Jesus, God made us to do good works, which God planned in advance for us to live our lives doing."

Ephesians 2:10 (NCV)

You weren’t put on Earth to live for yourself.

You were made for a greater purpose than simply to make money, retire, and die. You were made for a mission, and that mission gives your life meaning.

The Bible says, “God has made us what we are. In Christ Jesus, God made us to do good works, which God planned in advance for us to live our lives doing” (Ephesians 2:10 NCV)

In other words, you’re unique. No one else in the whole world—past, present, or future—is like you. God has made you so unique that there are certain things only you can contribute to the world. Those things make up your life mission.

Until you know your life mission, you’re just existing. Life may seem good, but you won’t experience the fulfillment you would if you were living out God’s intentions for you.

Jesus says in Mark 8:35, “If you insist on saving your life, you will lose it. Only those who throw away their lives for my sake and for the sake of the Good News will ever know what it means to really live” (TLB).

God is giving you the opportunity to build your life around his mission for you. The only way to do that is by starting with a firm foundation: Jesus Christ. “And no one can ever lay any other real foundation than that one we already have—Jesus Christ” (1 Corinthians 3:11 TLB).

You can choose to build your life on Jesus, the only foundation that will last. Or you can choose to spend your life chasing things that ultimately will fail you.

What’s certain is that one day you will stand before God and he’ll ask you: “Did you fulfill the mission that I gave you on this Earth?” On that day, it will be clear whether you spent your life fulfilling God’s mission for you—or you chose to chase lesser things.

It’s never too late to start living the life God has planned for you. Start building your foundation on Jesus and pursuing God’s mission for your life today.

Los Milagros Siempre Vienen de Fuentes Inesperadas

“Mis pensamientos no se parecen en nada a sus pensamientos —dice el Señor—. Y mis caminos están muy por encima de lo que pudieran imaginarse”. Isaías 55:8 (NTV)

La mayoría de nosotros tenemos necesidades en nuestra vida que deseamos se cumplan. Y muchos de nosotros tratamos de averiguar cómo conseguir que se cumplan. Puedes estar diciendo: “Quizá Dios podría hacerlo de esta manera” o “Tal vez podría ayudar a Dios de acuerdo con esto” o “Tal vez podría dar una sugerencia aquí”.

Estás tratando de manipular a Dios, ¡y no funciona!

La fuente de un milagro no será de donde tú crees que va a venir. Siempre es inesperado.

Dios le dijo a Abraham que iba a tener un hijo, y que ese hijo iba a ser el padre de una gran nación. Abraham tenía casi 100 años y le costó un poco creer la promesa de Dios. Así que tomó cartas en el asunto y tuvo relaciones sexuales con una mujer que no era su esposa, y tuvieron un hijo llamado Ismael. Pero Dios le dijo: “¡No! Ése no es el que te prometí. Ese es el que se te ocurrió usando tu plan, pero ese no es mi plan. Mi plan es que voy a usar a tu esposa Sara y hacer un milagro mucho después de que ella sea capaz de tener hijos”.

La forma en que quieres satisfacer la necesidad en tu vida no es la forma en que Dios quiere satisfacer la necesidad en tu vida. Tu manera es la segunda mejor. El camino de Dios es siempre el mejor.

Si pudieras entender a Dios, serías Dios. ¡Pero no lo eres! Permíteme darte un pequeño calmante para el estrés. Repite esto 10 veces: “Dios es Dios, y yo no”.

Isaías 55:8 dice: “Mis pensamientos no se parecen en nada a sus pensamientos—dice el Señor—. Y mis caminos están muy por encima de lo que pudieran imaginarse” (NTV).

La fuente de un milagro siempre llega de forma inesperada. Pero no debes preocuparte. No temas. No trates de entenderlo.

Confía en Dios y di: “No sé cómo lo va a hacer Dios, pero lo hará”. Si Dios te dice que lo hagas, aunque no tenga sentido, lo haces. Incluso si ir en esa dirección o a ese lugar o hablar con esa persona no tiene sentido, simplemente obedeces a Dios y haces lo que te dice que hagas. Y entonces, te preparas para un milagro.

¿Qué buscas como fuente de tu esperado milagro? Following Jesus Means Loving Everyone

“Love never stops being patient, never stops believing, never stops hoping, never gives up."

1 Corinthians 13:7 (GW)

If you are a follower of Christ, you must love everybody in the same way that Christ loves you. That means you are to accept them completely, love them unconditionally, forgive them totally, and consider them extremely valuable—whether you like them or not.

It’s not an option or a suggestion. It’s a command: “Now I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other” (John 13:34 NLT).

Loving others in this way will transform your relationships!

The Bible says in 1 Corinthians 13:7, “Love never stops being patient, never stops believing, never stops hoping, never gives up” (GW).

That’s how God loves you. He never stops being patient with you. He never stops believing in you. He never stops hoping for the best in your life. He never gives up on you. And God wants you to love others the same way.

Love never stops being patient. Love extends grace. You can offer grace to others.

Love never stops believing. Love expresses faith. Love allows you to say, “Even though we’re having a tough time, I will never stop believing in you.”

Love never stops hoping. Love expects the best. Are you expecting the best in your primary relationships, or have you settled for less than best?

Love never gives up. Love endures the worst. With love, you can say, “You can throw everything at me, but I’m going to keep loving you, no matter what.”

If you want to start transforming your relationships today, I invite you to say this prayer:

“Dear God, I admit that I have made a mess in my relationships. They’re complicated and broken, and I’ve often settled for less than best. They need a transformation. I want you to begin by changing me. Deliver me from my fears, because I can see how they make me distant, defensive, and even demanding. Today, and every day from now on, I want to surrender my heart to you. I want to learn to live my life dwelling in and filled with your love.

“Help me to accept others, just as you’ve accepted me. Help me to love others unconditionally, just as you have loved me. Help me to forgive others totally, just as you’ve forgiven me. And help me to value others as much as you value me. Help me to extend grace to and express faith in the people around me. Help me to expect the best in others, and when the worst happens, help me to endure it with grace. I ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen.”

Talk It Over

El Camino Hacia el Milagro Muchas Veces Pasa por un Territorio Incómodo

“Luego el Señor dijo a Elías: «Vete a vivir a la aldea de Sarepta, que está cerca de la ciudad de Sidón. Yo le he ordenado a una viuda de allí que te alimente». Elías se dirigió a Sarepta”. 1 Reyes 17: 8-10a (NTV)

Cuando tienes miedo a la muerte y te sientes vulnerable, no sabes a dónde vas, no sabes cuánto tiempo vas a demorar, y no sabes que va a pasar cuando llegues allí, ¿qué haces?

Recuerda que el camino hacia el milagro muchas veces pasa por un territorio incómodo.

La Biblia nos da una ilustración en 1 Reyes 17:8-10a: “Luego el Señor dijo a Elías: «Vete a vivir a la aldea de Sarepta, que está cerca de la ciudad de Sidón. Yo le he ordenado a una viuda de allí que te alimente». Elías se dirigió a Sarepta” (NTV).  

Dios le dijo a Elías que caminara más de 100 millas, durante una sequía, a través de un territorio peligroso, donde todo el mundo lo conocía y sabía que el rey Acab le tenía un precio a su cabeza. Cuando finalmente lo hizo y Elías llegó a Sarepta, conoció a una viuda pobre que iba a darle de comer. Pero ¿cómo podía ayudarlo a defenderse o protegerse en una ciudad pagana llena de gente que no dudaría en matarlo?

Los milagros no ocurren cuando las cosas son cómodas. Los milagros ocurren cuando las cosas son incómodas. Elías no dijo, “Dios, hay tres cosas malas en este plan. Uno de ellos, que me vas a enviar en la dirección equivocada. Dos, que me vas a enviar a la ubicación incorrecta. Y tres, que me vas a enviar a la protección equivocada”.

Elías simplemente obedeció.

El camino de Dios hacia un milagro a menudo nos lleva a través de territorio incómodo porque nos obliga a depender de Él.

Por ejemplo:

Cuando Moisés sacó a los israelitas de la esclavitud a la Tierra Prometida, tenían que pasar por el Mar Rojo en primer lugar.Antes de que David pudiera matar a Goliat, tuvo que caminar hacia el campo de batalla.Dios le dijo a Josafat que situara el coro por delante del ejército, y obtendría la victoria. ¿Cuánta fe crees que le tomó?

Los milagros nunca suceden en tu zona cómoda, cuando todo está muy bien y cómodo. No es necesario un milagro cuando todo está resuelto en tu vida. Sólo se necesita un milagro cuando estás en las últimas, cuando tienes miedo a la muerte, cuando estás inseguro, cuando puedes recibir un golpe desde cualquier ángulo.

¿Estás en un lugar en este momento en tu vida donde las cosas son un poco incómodas —económica, emocional, relacional, o físicamente? Estás un poco nervioso, un poco en el borde, un poco inseguro. Felicitaciones. ¡Estás en el camino hacia un milagro!

Al igual que Elías, Dios quiere que obedezcas para que puedas ver Su milagro al final del camino.

¡NUEVA SERIE! El Camino Hacia el Milagro Muchas Veces Pasa por un Territorio Incómodo

“Luego el Señor dijo a Elías: «Vete a vivir a la aldea de Sarepta, que está cerca de la ciudad de Sidón. Yo le he ordenado a una viuda de allí que te alimente». Elías se dirigió a Sarepta”. 1 Reyes 17: 8-10a (NTV)

Cuando tienes miedo a la muerte y te sientes vulnerable, no sabes a dónde vas, no sabes cuánto tiempo vas a demorar, y no sabes que va a pasar cuando llegues allí, ¿qué haces?

Recuerda que el camino hacia el milagro muchas veces pasa por un territorio incómodo.

La Biblia nos da una ilustración en 1 Reyes 17:8-10a: “Luego el Señor dijo a Elías: «Vete a vivir a la aldea de Sarepta, que está cerca de la ciudad de Sidón. Yo le he ordenado a una viuda de allí que te alimente». Elías se dirigió a Sarepta” (NTV).  

Dios le dijo a Elías que caminara más de 100 millas, durante una sequía, a través de un territorio peligroso, donde todo el mundo lo conocía y sabía que el rey Acab le tenía un precio a su cabeza. Cuando finalmente lo hizo y Elías llegó a Sarepta, conoció a una viuda pobre que iba a darle de comer. Pero ¿cómo podía ayudarlo a defenderse o protegerse en una ciudad pagana llena de gente que no dudaría en matarlo?

Los milagros no ocurren cuando las cosas son cómodas. Los milagros ocurren cuando las cosas son incómodas. Elías no dijo, “Dios, hay tres cosas malas en este plan. Uno de ellos, que me vas a enviar en la dirección equivocada. Dos, que me vas a enviar a la ubicación incorrecta. Y tres, que me vas a enviar a la protección equivocada”.

Elías simplemente obedeció.

El camino de Dios hacia un milagro a menudo nos lleva a través de territorio incómodo porque nos obliga a depender de Él.

Por ejemplo:

Cuando Moisés sacó a los israelitas de la esclavitud a la Tierra Prometida, tenían que pasar por el Mar Rojo en primer lugar.Antes de que David pudiera matar a Goliat, tuvo que caminar hacia el campo de batalla.Dios le dijo a Josafat que situara el coro por delante del ejército, y obtendría la victoria. ¿Cuánta fe crees que le tomó?

Los milagros nunca suceden en tu zona cómoda, cuando todo está muy bien y cómodo. No es necesario un milagro cuando todo está resuelto en tu vida. Sólo se necesita un milagro cuando estás en las últimas, cuando tienes miedo a la muerte, cuando estás inseguro, cuando puedes recibir un golpe desde cualquier ángulo.

¿Estás en un lugar en este momento en tu vida donde las cosas son un poco incómodas —económica, emocional, relacional, o físicamente? Estás un poco nervioso, un poco en el borde, un poco inseguro. Felicitaciones. ¡Estás en el camino hacia un milagro!

Al igual que Elías, Dios quiere que obedezcas para que puedas ver Su milagro al final del camino.

Remembering God’s Love Helps You Love Others

“The mountains and hills may crumble, but my love for you will never end."

Isaiah 54:10 (GNT)

If you don’t feel loved by God, you’ll struggle to show love to others. Loving people is easy when you understand and remember the way God loves you.

Every day, you need to remind yourself what God thinks about you—not what the world thinks or what you think about yourself.

Here are four things God thinks about you to help you remember why and how to love others:

You’re completely accepted. You may have spent much of your life trying to earn acceptance from your parents, peers, those you respect, those you envy, and even total strangers. But you need to realize God has already settled this issue of acceptance: “Jesus . . . made us acceptable to God” (Titus 3:7 CEV). What Jesus did on the cross made you completely acceptable to God—no matter what you’ve done or will do.

You’re unconditionally loved. God doesn’t say, “I love you if . . .” or “I love you because . . .” He says, “I love you—period!” You can’t make God stop loving you, because his love isn’t based on what you do but on who he is. Isaiah 54:10 says, “The mountains and hills may crumble, but my love for you will never end” (GNT).

You’re totally forgiven. Because Jesus died on the cross and gave his life as payment for your sins, you are totally forgiven when you accept God’s gift of forgiveness. Romans 8:1 says, “There is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus” (NLT). God doesn’t rehearse your sins; he releases them.

You’re extremely valuable. The value of something is created by two things: who the owner is and what somebody’s willing to pay for it. You are a child of God and “have been bought and paid for by Christ” (1 Corinthians 7:23 TLB). Jesus Christ paid for you with his life. That’s how valuable you are.

When you remember that you are accepted, loved, forgiven, and valuable to the Creator of the universe, you will be better equipped to show love to others.

Talk It Over

How does the way God thinks about you change the way you think about yourself?

“I’m grateful for your unconditional love. I want to use the rest of my life to love and serve you instead of serving myself. I commit my life to you and ask you to save me and accept me into your family. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.”
