God’s Vision: You Have What It Takes

“The LORD says, 'Do not cling to events of the past or dwell on what happened long ago. Watch for the new thing I am going to do. It is happening already—you can see it now!'”

Isaiah 43:18-19 (GNT)

When people stop following God’s vision for their lives, they usually think two things: “I don’t have what it takes” or “I have failed in the past.” If you want to get a fresh start on pursuing God’s vision, the first step is to stop making excuses.

You do have what it takes
Have you ever heard someone say or have you even said yourself, “I don’t have what it takes to go after my dream”? Many people in the Bible—including Moses and Jeremiah—tried to use this excuse when God had an assignment for them. But my favorite example of “I don’t have what it takes” is Gideon.

God told Gideon he wanted to use him to liberate the Israelites. Gideon responded: “‘But Lord . . . how can I rescue Israel? My clan is the weakest in the whole tribe of Manasseh, and I am the least in my entire family!’ The LORD said to him, ‘I will be with you’” (Judges 6:15-16 NLT).

When you think you don’t have what it takes, remember what Gideon’s life teaches: You’re never on your own; God is always with you and for you. You can rely on his power, presence, promises, and protection. You don’t have to worry about anything!

Your past is past
This is another common excuse for not making a fresh start: “I have failed in the past.”

The truth is that everyone has failed. And while you are a product of your past, you don’t have to be a prisoner of your past. You’re shaped by things that happened to you and things you did to yourself. But today you have a choice; you are not a victim unless you choose to be.

God is far more interested in your future than your past. Isaiah 43:18-19 says, “The LORD says, ‘Do not cling to events of the past or dwell on what happened long ago. Watch for the new thing I am going to do. It is happening already—you can see it now!’” (GNT)

The biggest barrier to your success may be your own excuses. God wants you to let go of past failures and confess your sins. Then you can move on, knowing your sins are forgiven.

“A man who refuses to admit his mistakes can never be successful. But if he confesses and forsakes them, he gets another chance” (Proverbs 28:13 TLB).

That’s a fresh start!

Are you fully relying on God’s power, presence, promises, and protection to do what he has called you to do? Why or why not?
What failure in your past have you used as an excuse not to start something new?
If you truly rested in the knowledge of God’s forgiveness, what new thing would it give you the confidence to start?

Pray to Be a Person of Vision

“No one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.”

John 3:3 (NIV)

When Moses and the Israelites were on the border of Canaan, God wanted them to enter the Promised Land in faith. But most of the spies Moses sent came back spreading fear about giants in the land.

Although two of the spies, Joshua and Caleb, told them they could defeat the giants, the Israelites sadly chose to believe the majority report of fear, not the minority report of faith. They didn’t believe the promise of God. As a result, they all wandered and died in the desert over the next 40 years, until a new generation grew up and was allowed to go into the Promised Land.

“So we see that they were not able to enter, because of their unbelief” (Hebrews 3:19 NIV). That’s one of the saddest verses in the Bible. And it makes me wonder, “What blessing of God am I missing out on because of my unbelief?” To me, hell would be if God were to show me what he could have done in my life if I had believed him just a little bit more.

What blessing of God are you missing right now, simply because you don’t believe? What will you miss if you’re looking at the future with eyes of fear, not faith?

The starting point for getting God’s vision for your life is to first put your trust in Jesus Christ. You need to ask him to put his Spirit into your life. It’s the only way you’ll ever be able to see with eyes of faith and get God’s vision.

Jesus says, “No one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again” (John 3:3 NIV).

When you’re born physically, you get the sense of sight. When you’re spiritually born again, you get a new set of spiritual eyes. You can see spiritual things you didn’t see before. Unless you’re born again, you can never see all that God has in store for your life.

Jesus had some friends that were siblings: Mary, Martha, and Lazarus. Lazarus died, and Jesus raised him back to life. And when he did, he reminded Mary and Martha: “Did I not tell you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?” (John 11:40 NIV)

How badly do you want to see God’s glory in your life? You’ve got to stop nursing your worries and make some commitments in faith. You’ve got to step out and move against your fears.

If you have never given your life to Christ, it’s time to be born again. Then you can start seeing with spiritual eyes. If you’re already a Christian, remember that God has brought you through so much, and he has a great future for you.

God’s plans for you are good! Lay aside your eyes of fear and begin to see with eyes of faith so that you can get God’s vision.

Talk It Over

What blessing do you think you might be missing out on because of unbelief?
What fear do you need to trade for faith?
What commitment does God want you to make today in faith?

If you've never invited Christ into your life, you can pray this simple prayer today: "God, I realize I need you. I want to be born again. I ask you to put your Spirit in my life. I confess I have sinned against you, and I ask that you forgive all my sins and help me to follow you. I want to learn to trust you and love you. And I want to see your vision, purpose, and plan for my life. Please accept me into your family. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen."

If you’ve already prayed that prayer, then you can say to God, "Father, today I want to switch to seeing with eyes of fear to eyes of faith. I want to trust you, to expect great things from you, and to attempt great things for you. I want to be a person of vision, and I ask you to give me your vision. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen."

If you just prayed to accept Jesus, please email me at Rick@PastorRick.com and let me know. I’d like to send you some free materials to help you start your journey with Jesus.

No te dan consejos. Sufriremos contigo”.

Four Signs Fear Is Affecting Your Vision

“And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.”

Philippians 4:19 (NIV)

Have you noticed that fear makes you miserable? Looking at your life and the future with eyes of fear will never produce joy.

After the spies gave their reports of the Promised Land to Moses—most of them negative—here’s how the Israelites responded: “Then the whole community began weeping aloud, and they cried all night. Their voices rose in a great chorus of protest against Moses and Aaron. ‘If only we had died in Egypt, or even here in the wilderness!’ they complained” (Numbers 14:1-2 NLT).

Now, that’s what you call a full-blown pity party. The Israelites were so afraid of what was going to happen, that they just wanted to die in the desert rather than trust whatever God had in store for them.

These verses from Numbers 14 include four warning signs. When these warnings show up in your life, you will know that you’re looking at the future with eyes of fear.

Your sadness increases. Depression can be caused by a lot of things, and it robs you of joy. If you feel sadness pushing out your joy, consider whether you’re allowing fear to skew your perspective.

Your complaining increases. When you’re afraid, you want others to share in your misery. If you don’t think you’ve been complaining more lately, check with your spouse or your friends. Sometimes they can see how your fear is manifesting itself better than you can.

You start second-guessing. The Israelites all complained about the very people who had led them out of slavery. Fear always sows seeds of doubt.

You want to go backwards. Because their perspective was so skewed by fear, the Israelites thought it would be better to die in slavery in Egypt. Of course, they didn’t really want that. But when you’re living with a vision of fear instead of faith, you can’t look at the future with hope.

You don’t want to be someone who complains and is always looking back. That’s why God wants you to see the future through eyes of faith, not fear. Start growing your faith today by reserving intentional time with God and in his Word, which says, “And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:19 NIV).

The more you get to know God and his promises, the more purposefully and joyfully you will move toward your future.

How does knowing God’s promises help you look toward the future with purpose and joy?
If misery loves company, then what kind of effect does joy have on you and the way you interact with others?
What do you need to sacrifice to spend more time studying God’s Word so your life will be guided by faith rather than fear?

Share a Vision of Faith, Not Fear

“We should go up and take possession of the land, for we can certainly do it.”

Numbers 13:30 (NIV)

If you look at the future with fear instead of faith, then you will underestimate the abilities God has given you. Seeing life with eyes of fear causes you to bury your talents.

When Moses sent spies to scope out the Promised Land, 10 of the 12 came back and said, “We can’t attack those people; they are stronger than we are” (Numbers 13:31 NIV). Even though God had promised to be with them, they responded in fear rather than faith. Only Joshua and Caleb believed in God’s promise that they could take possession of the land.

People who always say, “I can’t” and the people who always say “I can” are both right. Why? Because fear creates self-fulfilling prophecies. This happened to Job when he said, “What I feared has come upon me; what I dreaded has happened to me” (Job 3:25 NIV).

A vision based on fear rather than faith is going to limit you for your entire life. You’re going to miss opportunities. You’re going to waste the talent that God gave you. And you’re going to set yourself up with self-defeating predictions.

The spies with fear-based vision saw themselves as inadequate. They said, “The land we explored devours those living in it. All the people we saw there are of great size . . . We seemed like grasshoppers in our own eyes, and we looked the same to them” (Numbers 13:32-33 NIV).

There really were giants in the Promised Land! They caused some of the Israelites to see themselves as tiny bugs sure to get squashed. That’s a defeating self-image. It didn’t affect just the spies’ confidence; it also caused them to project their fears on others. That’s the problem with a fear-based vision: The way you see yourself and life will rub off on the people around you.

If the spies had looked at the Promised Land with faith instead of fear, they would have seen the same thing Joshua and Caleb did: a land flowing with milk and honey. Even when they looked at the giants, Joshua and Caleb saw their potential through God’s eyes. They said, “We should go up and take possession of the land, for we can certainly do it” (Numbers 13:30 NIV).

Never underestimate what God can do through you when you obey him in faith. Whatever he has called you to do, you can certainly accomplish in his strength.

Why You Need God’s Vision

“Where there is no vision, the people perish.”

Proverbs 29:18 (KJV)

Why does the Bible say vision is so important in your life?

Because “where there is no vision, the people perish” (Proverbs 29:18 KJV). Here are three reasons it’s essential to have a clear vision of God’s purpose for your life.

Without God’s vision, there’s indecision. James 1:8 says, “A person who has doubts is thinking about two different things at the same time and can’t make up his mind about anything” (GW).

Without God’s vision for your future, you drift and wander through life. You don’t have goals, purpose, or meaning. When you just let life happen to you, you’re not really living!

With no vision, you waste time and you miss opportunities. You don’t make the most of what you’ve been given, and that makes you a poor steward of your life. You end up just coasting. And when you’re coasting, you’re always heading downhill.

Without God’s vision, there’s division. If you don’t understand God’s vision for your life, how can you expect others to support you in your purpose? In fact, the lack of vision makes you vulnerable to others steering you toward what they think or assume your purpose is.

Only God can tell you your purpose because he created you specifically and uniquely to live it out. And only following his vision will allow you to live the abundant life God intends for you. If you aren’t sure where you’re headed, then don’t expect anybody else to go with you.

Proverbs 28:2 says, “When the country is in chaos, everybody has a plan to fix it—But it takes a leader of real understanding to straighten things out” (The Message). Vision is the antidote to division.

Without God’s vision, there’s collision. For many people, life is just a series of relational confrontations, financial crashes, and personal crises. It’s like a bumper car ride, where you just keep getting hit from all sides. Without God’s clear direction for your life, you will inevitably hit a dead end.

The Bible warns of the consequences of not following God’s vision for your life: “Some have refused to let their faith guide their conscience and their faith has been destroyed like a wrecked ship” (1 Timothy 1:19 GW).

Getting God’s vision for your life requires prayer, careful thought, and a continual effort to hear God’s voice. It’s the result of seeing things clearly, with eyes of faith rather than eyes of fear. When your faith guides your conscience, you’ll gain a clearer understanding of how to move forward with purpose.

Talk It Over

What do you think God’s vision is for your life?
If you saw your current situation through eyes of faith rather than fear, what would you change?
What does it mean for faith to guide your conscience, as 1 Timothy 1:19 says?

If you've never invited Christ into your life, you can pray this simple prayer today: "God, I realize I need you. I want to be born again. I confess I have sinned against you, and I ask that you forgive all my sins. Jesus, I receive you into my life as Lord and Savior. Today, I’m turning every part of my life over to you. I want to follow you and do what you tell me to do. And I want to see your vision, purpose, and plan for my life. Please accept me into your family. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen."

If you’ve already accepted Christ into your life, then you can pray, "Father, help me to see life through the eyes of faith. I want to follow your vision for the things you want me to do. I’m going to trust you and expect great things from you as I step forward in faith to attempt great things for you. I’m committed to your plan for my life. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen."
