Christmas Comes With a Choice

“Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!”

John 1:29 (ESV)

Redemption is when somebody pays for your sins so that you can be forgiven and walk away justified. They do your time. They pay your penalty. All the things you’ve done wrong are paid for by somebody else.

That’s what Jesus Christ did for you. Jesus didn’t just come to Earth at Christmas. He also lived a perfect life so that his sacrifice was enough to satisfy God’s judgment. All of your sins were paid for on the cross.

One day, Jesus came from Galilee to be baptized by John the Baptist in the Jordan River. When John saw him coming, he announced, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” (John 1:29 ESV).

Every Jewish person knows the symbolism of this verse. Once a year in the Jewish faith, a perfect, spotless lamb was sacrificed at Passover to represent the redemption of the world.

After Jesus Christ died on the cross for our sin, there was no longer a need for any symbolic sacrificing of animals. But before Jesus’ death and resurrection, the lamb that was sacrificed for the sin of other people had to be spotless. Only a perfect life was acceptable enough to die for all the people’s imperfections. And that is why Jesus—the Lamb of God, who lived a perfect life—could satisfy the justice of God toward sin through his death.

When the religious leaders who wanted to crucify Jesus brought him to Pilate, the Roman governor interviewed Jesus and acknowledged that he was totally innocent: “Pilate then called together the chief priests and the rulers and the people, and said to them, ‘You brought me this man as one who was misleading the people. And after examining him before you, behold, I did not find this man guilty of any of your charges against him’” (Luke 23:13-14 ESV).

Pilate found no fault in Jesus. He didn’t see any sin or crime that Jesus should be punished for.

If you have not acknowledged that Jesus Christ has a right to be Lord over your life, what do you find wrong with him? On what basis do you reject what he did for you? On what grounds do you reject him as your Savior?

Pilate gave the people an opportunity to decide what they were going to do with Jesus. After the Roman soldiers tortured Jesus, he “came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said to them, ‘Behold the man!’” (John 19:5 ESV).

Just as the people in Jesus’ day were invited to “behold the man,” God invites you too to behold Jesus, the one who has taken away every sin you’ve ever committed or will commit.

Christmas comes with the best news ever—and a choice: What are you going to do with Jesus?

Talk It Over

“Dear God, I know I’m a sinner, and I ask for your forgiveness. I believe Jesus Christ is your Son. I believe that he died for my sin and that you raised him to life. Jesus, I want to trust you as my Savior and follow you as Lord from this day forward. Guide my life and help me to do your will. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.”

Tu Tiempo Está en las Manos de Dios

“Pero yo confío en ti, oh Señor; digo: ‘¡Tú eres mi Dios!’ Mi futuro está en tus manos”.  Salmo 31:14-15 (NTV)

Lo opuesto al miedo es la fe. Cuando llenas tu vida de fe, el miedo sale por la puerta de atrás. Cuando las cosas no suceden en tu horario, entre más confíes en Dios, menos temeroso estarás.

En Marcos 5:36, Jesús dice, “No tengas miedo. Solo ten fe”.

Este es un mensaje tan gran en la Biblia que la frase “no temas” aparece 365 veces. Dios quiere que recibamos el mensaje de que no tenemos que tener miedo porque podemos confiar en Su tiempo.

Confiar en Dios es el calmante número uno para el estrés en tu vida, una verdad importante para recordar en Navidad. Entre más confíes en Dios, más disminuirá tu estrés. Otra forma de aliviar el estrés y demostrar tu confianza en Dios, es cuando le pides algo en oración. Cuando lo hagas, no trates de establecer un límite de tiempo o fecha límite de respuesta de Dios. Deja el tiempo a Dios.

Para ayudar a que tu fe se profundice, debes orar una oración como el Salmo 31:14-15, “Pero yo confío en ti, oh Señor; digo: ‘¡Tú eres mi Dios!’ Mi futuro está en tus manos” (NTV).

¿Por qué no memorizas esa Escritura? Cuando te levantes todas las mañanas, lee el Salmo 31 como una oración y dile a Dios: “Pero yo confío en ti, oh Señor; digo:

‘¡Tú eres mi Dios!’ Mi futuro está en tus manos”. En la práctica, eso significa que probablemente tienes más que hacer hoy, que el tiempo que tienes para hacerlo. Así que pídele a Dios que te ayude a arreglar todo, para que puedas hacer lo que más importa y no te preocupes por el resto. Tú le dices, “Te entrego mi horario, te entrego mi calendario. Te entrego mi agenda. Mis tiempos están en tu mano y eso significa que no voy a tener miedo. Voy a confiar en ti”.

Take Time to Behold Jesus at Christmas

“An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with great fear. And the angel said to them, ‘Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.”

Luke 2:9-11 (ESV)

There’s a big difference between glancing at something and gazing at something. When you gaze at something, you’re doing what the angel instructed the shepherds to do—you’re beholding it.

At Christmastime, most people will give God a glance. They might start humming “O Come, Let Us Adore Him” because it’s playing on the store speakers as they do their Christmas shopping. Or they notice the nativity scene someone has placed in their home, with baby Jesus at the center, and they give it a glance.

During the busyness of the Christmas rush, not taking time to behold the best news ever can be easy.

What is the best news—the Good News—that God wants you to behold this Christmas?

It’s this: You are not an accident. Your parents may not have planned you, but God planned you. God made you to love you. If God had not wanted to love you, then he wouldn’t have created you. You wouldn’t be taking your next breath!

The 80 or so years you have on Earth are short compared to eternity. In fact, this life is preparation for eternity. God wants you to live with him forever in heaven, but to do that, you’ve got to have a relationship with him here on Earth.

How do you have a relationship with God? It starts with beholding him.

It’s the message the angel brought to the shepherds on that first Christmas: “An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with great fear. And the angel said to them, ‘Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord’” (Luke 2:9-11 ESV).

Behold, God came to Earth. That’s a big deal! At Christmas, God became a human so we could see what he’s really like.

You can know a lot of things about God just by looking at creation. But there are some things you’d never know about God if it weren’t for Jesus. If Jesus hadn’t come to Earth, you wouldn’t know that God loves you, forgives you, and has a purpose for your life.

If you want to know what God is like, take a long look at Jesus. He is the full picture of God’s grace.

Behold your Savior. Then you can make him Lord of your life.

Dios Siempre Llega a Tiempo

“Esta visión es para un tiempo futuro. Describe el fin y éste se cumplirá. Aunque parezca que se demora en llegar, espera con paciencia, porque sin lugar a dudas sucederá. No se tardará”. Habacuc 2:3 (NTV)

Dios nunca tiene prisa y nunca llega tarde.

Él siempre llega a tiempo.

El tiempo de Dios es perfecto, incluso cuando no podemos entenderlo. Realmente nunca lo entenderemos, porque Dios existe en una longitud de onda diferente. Él tiene una visión diferente del tiempo, debido a que es eterno.

La Biblia habla acerca del entendimiento de Dios sobre el tiempo, en 2 Pedro 3:8. Dice, “Para el Señor, un día es como mil años y mil años son como un día” (NTV).

¿Suena de la misma manera en que tú manejas el tiempo? Se pueden sentir como mil años cuando a veces estoy esperando una comida, pero los seres humanos no pensamos en esos términos.

La eternidad de Dios tiene grandes implicaciones para tu vida. Cuando Dios te creó, puso un sueño en tu corazón. La mayoría de las personas comienzan con una gran visión y un gran objetivo; tienen algún tipo de sueño, plan o proyecto para su vida.

¿Qué visión te ha dado Dios? Con los años he descubierto que, si bien todos tienden a comenzar a la edad temprana con una visión, mientras pasa el tiempo, más y más personas renuncian a su sueño antes de que se logre porque no sucede lo suficientemente rápido.

Tal vez tu sueño ha sido maltratado. Tal vez tu sueño se ha roto. O tal vez, por desánimo y desilusión, has enterrado tu sueño. Te has dado por vencido.

Dios no quiere que hagas eso. Si Dios te dio un sueño para tu vida, eso sucederá.  Simplemente tiene que suceder en Su tiempo, no en el tuyo.

Dios dice esto acerca de Su sueño: “Esta visión es para un tiempo futuro. Describe el fin y éste se cumplirá. Aunque parezca que se demora en llegar, espera con paciencia, porque sin lugar a dudas sucederá. No se tardará” Habacuc 2:3 (NTV).

Cuando empecé la Iglesia Saddleback hace casi 40 años, tenía 25 años y tenía prisa por hacer todo rápido. Pero Dios me dijo lo mismo que te dirá a ti con tu sueño: “No, no todo va a suceder en este momento. Pero lentamente, constantemente, la visión se cumplirá”.

Quiero que recuerdes una verdad poderosa esta temporada navideña: Dios nunca llega antes en tu vida. Él nunca llega tarde en tu vida. Dios siempre tiene la razón a tiempo.

Jesus’ Sacrifice Is for Everyone

“Christ Jesus . . . gave himself to redeem the whole human race. That was the proof at the right time that God wants everyone to be saved.”

1 Timothy 2:5-6 (GNT)

When Mary and Joseph took baby Jesus to be dedicated at the temple, a really old man named Simeon was there. Simeon had been waiting his whole life to see the Messiah. He took one look at baby Jesus and said, “I have seen your salvation, which you have prepared for all people. He is a light to reveal God to the nations” (Luke 2:30-32 NLT).

Jesus was a gift for all people—not just at Christmas but also when he gave his life on the cross to pay the penalty for sin. The Bible says in 1 Timothy 2:5-6, “Christ Jesus . . . gave himself to redeem the whole human race. That was the proof at the right time that God wants everyone to be saved” (GNT).

One day, while John the Baptist was baptizing people in the Jordan River, Jesus came to him to be baptized. Here’s what happened: “John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, ‘Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!’” (John 1:29 NIV)

Without the cross—without Jesus being the Lamb of God—Christmas has no significance. If Jesus hadn’t died for our sins, he would have just been a good teacher or another philosopher with some good thoughts. Throughout history, good people and great thinkers have shared interesting ideas—but none of them could save you. The only way to have a Savior is for someone to die in your place.

In 2013, my wife, Kay, and I lost our youngest son to his lifetime battle with mental illness. It was the worst day of my life. In the grief of those dark weeks and months after Matthew’s death, it occurred to me that God knows what it’s like to lose a child. He had given his only Son for our salvation. That truth has been my hope in the midst of the pain.

It is your hope, too, and the hope of everyone who trusts in Jesus for their salvation. Jesus’ sacrifice is for everyone.

“And he died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again” (2 Corinthians 5:15 NIV).

La Libertad del Miedo a la Muerte

“En esa clase de amor no hay temor, porque el amor perfecto expulsa todo temor”. 1 Juan 4:18 a (NTV)

Dios es un Dios de libertad radical. De hecho, la Biblia dice: “Por lo tanto, Cristo en verdad nos ha liberado. Ahora asegúrense de permanecer libres y no se esclavicen de nuevo a la ley” Gálatas 5:1 (NTV).

¿Qué libertad te da Dios? En los últimos días, hemos aprendido que te da una conciencia tranquila, acceso directo a Dios y el poder de hacer lo correcto. También te libera del miedo a la muerte.

La muerte es un miedo universal, pero es un miedo que pocas personas quieren enfrentar. Puede ser tentador ir por la vida fingiendo que no vas a morir. Pero solo un tonto iría por la vida sin estar preparado para lo que sabe que es inevitable.

Estas son las buenas noticias: Jesús vino a liberarte del miedo a la muerte.

Hebreos 2:14-16 dice: “Por tanto, ya que ellos son de carne y hueso, él también compartió esa naturaleza humana para anular, mediante la muerte, al que tiene el dominio de la muerte —es decir, al diablo—, y librar a todos los que por temor a la muerte estaban sometidos a esclavitud durante toda la vida” (NVI).

Puedo decir, con toda honestidad, que estoy totalmente libre del miedo a morir. ¿Por qué? Porque conozco a Dios y no le tengo miedo. He sido su amigo durante más de 60 años. Las únicas personas que le temen a Dios son las personas que no lo conocen. Cuanto más lo conoces, menos le tienes miedo, porque Dios es amor.

“En esa clase de amor no hay temor, porque el amor perfecto expulsa todo temor” 1 Juan 4:18 (NTV).

¿Cómo puedes temer a alguien que te ama incondicionalmente? ¿Cómo puedes temer a alguien que piensa en ti más que tú? Dios conoce cada detalle de tu vida. ¡Hasta sabe cuántos cabellos tienes en la cabeza! Entonces, ¿por qué tendrías miedo de ir a estar con Él para siempre?

Si conoces al Señor, cuando mueras no te irás de casa, ¡te irás a casa! Irás a donde debías estar por toda la eternidad, al “reino preparado para ustedes desde la creación del mundo” Mateo 25:34 (NVI).

¡Alabado sea Dios, puedes vivir libre! Puedes vivir sin culpa, capaz de hablar con Dios en cualquier momento y en cualquier lugar, libre de hacer lo correcto y seguro de que no hay necesidad de temer a la muerte, todo porque perteneces a Jesús.

Where Is God When You’re in Pain?

“The LORD is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.”

Psalm 34:18 (ESV)

God shares the pain of every single person—including you. When you’re hurting, he isn’t distant, aloof, or unfeeling. He is aware of your pain, and he cares. And he even shares the pain with you.

God the Father shares your pain so naturally because he created you. The Bible says, “The one who formed their hearts understands everything they do” (Psalm 33:15 GW). In other words, God is never shocked by your emotions or your thoughts. He understands why you do what you do better than even you understand. He is more than capable to share your pain.

Jesus, God’s Son, shares your pain because he suffered it on Earth. Hebrews 4:15 says: “Jesus understands every weakness of ours, because he was tempted in every way that we are” (CEV).

He understands emotional pain, like abandonment, loneliness, criticism, discrimination, rejection, and betrayal. Jesus also understands physical pain. Can you imagine being on the cross and carrying the guilt of every evil thing done throughout history? His death on the cross was the worst kind of physical pain.

The Holy Spirit also shares your pain. How? When you don’t know how to pray, the Holy Spirit is praying for you. The Bible promises, “The moment we get tired in the waiting, God’s Spirit is right alongside helping us along. If we don’t know how or what to pray, it doesn’t matter. He does our praying in and for us, making prayer out of our wordless sighs, our aching groans” (Romans 8:26 The Message).

Where is God when you’re in pain? He’s grieving with you. He’s standing by you. He knows what it’s like to suffer, and he has compassion for you.

He’s not some aloof God who says, “Oh, I’m sorry you’re hurt.” That’s sympathy. Empathy says, “I hurt with you.” But compassion says, “I’ll do anything I can to stop your hurt.” That’s what Jesus did. His compassion took him all the way to the cross.

If you are in pain this Christmas, remember Psalm 34:18: “The LORD is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit” (ESV).

You’re never closer to God than when you have a broken heart. He is there, he cares, and he shares your pain.

I need your light to help me grow. Jesus Christ, as much as I know how, I open my life to the light of your love. I want to accept you as God's Christmas gift to me. I want to learn to follow you and trust you. And I humbly ask you to accept me into your family by grace—not because I deserve it but because I put my faith in your love and your light. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.”

La Libertad de Elegir lo que es Correcto

“Sabemos que nuestro antiguo ser pecaminoso fue crucificado con Cristo para que el pecado perdiera su poder en nuestra vida. Ya no somos esclavos del pecado. Pues, cuando morimos con Cristo, fuimos liberados del poder del pecado”. Romanos 6:6-7 (NTV)

Dios da cuatro grandes libertades a todos los que ponen su confianza en Él. Ya vimos las dos primeras: una conciencia limpia y acceso personal a Dios. La tercera libertad es el poder de hacer lo correcto.

La mayoría de las personas piensan que la libertad significa que no hay reglas, límites ni regulaciones, pero esa es una visión muy limitada de la libertad. En cambio, la libertad es el poder que Dios te da en su gracia para decir “sí” a las cosas que son buenas para ti y “no” a las cosas que son dañinas.

Si no tienes el poder de decir “no”, hay una palabra para eso: adicción. Y con ello vienen las obsesiones y las compulsiones en tu vida. La Biblia enseña: “Uno es esclavo de aquello que lo controla” 2 Pedro 2:19 (NTV).

Una vez leí una historia sobre un hermano y una hermana que fueron alentados por sus padres a “encontrar su felicidad”. Su hogar no tenía límites y se les permitía experimentar con el sexo y las drogas. Para cuando tenían veintitantos años, sus vidas estaban fuera de control.

El hermano pronto se dio cuenta: “Mi libertad no era libertad en absoluto. Por fuera, parecía estar disfrutando de la vida. Pero por dentro estaba esclavizado a mis propios miedos, inseguridades y compulsiones. Necesitaba a alguien que me liberara de mí mismo”.

Eso es exactamente lo que todos necesitamos: alguien que nos libere de nosotros mismos.

¿Alguna vez pensaste, “¿Por qué me vuelvo loco con las personas que más amo? ¿Por qué estoy ansioso y temeroso todo el tiempo? ¿Cómo me detengo?” Estas son cosas que quizás hayas intentado cambiar de ti mismo pero que no tuviste el poder de cambiar. Ese tipo de poder viene sólo de Dios.

Pablo expresó esta tensión en Romanos 7:24-25: “¡Soy un pobre desgraciado! ¿Quién me libertará de esta vida dominada por el pecado y la muerte? ¡Gracias a Dios! La respuesta está en Jesucristo nuestro Señor. Así que ya ven: en mi mente de verdad quiero obedecer la ley de Dios, pero a causa de mi naturaleza pecaminosa, soy esclavo del pecado” (NTV).

¿Por qué Jesucristo es la respuesta? Jesús promete: “Así que, si el Hijo los hace libres, ustedes son verdaderamente libres” Juan 8:36 (NTV).

La libertad no es simplemente no tener límites. La libertad radical es la libertad de decir “sí” a las cosas que mejoran tu salud, aumentan tu felicidad y llenan tu vida de significado. La libertad radical es el poder de hacer lo correcto.

Reflexiona Sobre Esto:

Al considerar 2 Pedro 2:19, “Uno es esclavo de aquello que lo controla” (NTV), ¿por qué crees que Dios odia tanto el pecado?Describe un momento en que trataste de cambiar un comportamiento por tu propia cuenta. ¿Como resultó?Basándose en este devocional, ¿cómo aconsejarías a alguien que desea desesperadamente detener un patrón destructivo pero no ha tenido éxito?

Si todavía no has confiado en Jesús y no te has comprometido a seguirlo, ¿por qué esperar más? Si estás listo para cruzar esa línea y tomar la decisión de creer en Jesucristo y seguirlo; haz esta oración .

Christmas Shows God’s Extravagant Love

“Each day the LORD pours his unfailing love upon me.”

Psalm 42:8 (NLT)

Even though I know conserving water is important, it doesn’t make me dislike water-saving showerheads any less. They’re so stingy! You cannot call the meager amount of water they disperse a shower. It’s more like a dribble.

Unlike my water-saving showerhead, God is not stingy with his love. He doesn’t dribble it out. He showers it extravagantly on all people!

The Bible says it like this: “Each day the LORD pours his unfailing love upon me” (Psalm 42:8 NLT).

God has never created anybody he doesn’t love.

He pays attention to every detail of your life. Love is attention. When you pay attention to what’s important to somebody else, you are showing them love.

God sees every tear that falls from your eyes. He’s heard every laugh you’ve laughed. He knows every hair on your head and which ones fell out in the sink or turned gray today.

The Bible says, “God knows every step I take” (Job 23:10 GNT). He is concerned about your steps, and he pays attention to them.

God is never too busy for you; he could never forget you. The Bible says, “Can a mother forget her nursing child? . . . But even if that were possible, I would not forget you! See, I have written your name on the palms of my hands” (Isaiah 49:15-16 NLT). The nail marks that Jesus has from dying on the cross for you are God’s tattoo of you.

You may feel forgotten, but God has never stopped paying attention to you.

You can know that he loves you not only because he’s paying attention but also because he took the initiative to save you.

Love is not just merely words; it is acting on behalf of others. It is making someone else’s problem your own—and that’s exactly what God did at Christmas.

Jesus coming at Christmas to die for you on the cross is the greatest example of love. Luke 2:11 says, “Today your Savior was born in the town of David. He is Christ, the Lord” (NCV).

When Jesus came to Earth, God was showing his love in the most amazing way. It’s as if he was saying, “I see you, and I’m going to take on your problems as my own. I’m sending my beloved Son to live a perfect life and die in your place. This is how much I love you.”

God didn’t hold anything back at Christmas. Through Jesus, he showered his love on all people!

Talk It Over

How do your Christmas traditions and celebrations focus on God’s love? What is one way you want to focus more on God’s love this Christmas?
What can you do to remember God’s love when you feel forgotten by him?

Jesus, I want to trust you as my Savior and follow you as Lord from this day forward. Guide my life and help me to do your will. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.”

La Libertad de Hablar con Dios

“Gracias a Cristo y a nuestra fe en él, podemos entrar en la presencia de Dios con toda libertad y confianza”. Efesios 3:12 (NTV)

Cuando pones tu confianza en Jesús como tu Salvador, Él te da cuatro grandes libertades. La primera es una conciencia tranquila. Él perdona tu pecado y borra tu culpa.

La segunda gran libertad es el acceso personal a Dios. Eres su hijo, parte de su familia, y puedes hablar con Dios en cualquier momento y en cualquier lugar, las 24 horas del día, los siete días de la semana.

Es un mito que todo el mundo tiene acceso directo a Dios. ¡Simplemente no es cierto! Dios da acceso directo a sí mismo solo a través de su Hijo, Jesucristo.

La Biblia dice: “Gracias a Cristo y a nuestra fe en él, podemos entrar en la presencia de Dios con toda libertad y confianza” Efesios 3:12 (NTV).

Algunas veces fui a un concierto donde me dieron un pase de “acceso total”. Pude ir detrás del escenario y pasar el rato con quien quisiera. ¡Nadie pudo detenerme!

Ese es el tipo de libertad que obtienes cuando estás en la familia de Dios. Dios te da un pase de acceso total a Él. No tienes que recibir una invitación o una presentación especial. No necesitas tener una gran idea en mente. Debido a que eres su hijo, tienes acceso directo a Dios durante todo el día, todos los días.

A veces la gente dirá: “Rick, ora por mí”, como si mis oraciones fueran mejores que las de ellos. Pero eso no es cierto. Tienen el mismo acceso personal a Dios que tengo yo. Pueden hablar con Dios en cualquier momento y por cualquier motivo.

No es necesario que uses palabras elegantes, cierres los ojos o termines cada oración con “en el nombre de Jesús”. Simplemente mantén una oración continua a lo largo del día, retomando donde la dejaste. Hago eso con Dios todo el tiempo.

Qué increíble libertad es saber que podemos acercarnos “… con toda confianza al trono de la gracia de nuestro Dios. Allí recibiremos su misericordia y encontraremos la gracia que nos ayudará cuando más la necesitemos” Hebreos 4:16 (NTV).

Cuando te conviertes en parte de la familia de Dios, tienes la libertad de una conciencia limpia y acceso personal a Dios. Mañana veremos la tercera libertad: el poder de hacer lo correcto.

¿Por qué es importante que las personas tengan acceso directo a Dios en todo momento?¿Qué podría impedirte aprovechar tu acceso personal a Dios a través de la oración¿De qué manera complicas tus oraciones? ¿De qué manera luchas con la idea de que puedes hablar con Dios en cada situación?

Si todavía no has confiado en Jesús y no te has comprometido a seguirlo, ¿por qué esperar más? Si estás listo para cruzar esa línea y tomar la decisión de creer en Jesucristo y seguirlo; haz esta oración .
