How God Uses Grief to Help You Grow

“We know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him.”

Romans 8:28 (NIV)

Grief, loss, and pain are inevitable parts of life. But did you know that God uses these things to help you grow? He does it in three ways.

First, God uses pain to get your attention. C. S. Lewis wrote, “God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks in our conscience, but shouts in our pain.” Pain is God’s megaphone. You rarely change when you see the light. You change when you feel the heat.

Proverbs 20:30 says, “Sometimes it takes a painful experience to make us change our ways” (GNT).

Second, God brings good out of bad. One of the most famous verses in the Bible is Romans 8:28: “We know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him” (NIV).

When you experience a loss, it’s an opportunity to grow in character. You can’t control the pain you go through, but you can decide whether it’s going to make you bitter or better. You can decide whether it’s going to be a stepping-stone or a stumbling block. You have to remember that, even in your pain, God is working for your good.

Third, God prepares you for eternity. The Bible says in 2 Corinthians 4:17-18: “These little troubles are getting us ready for an eternal glory that will make all our troubles seem like nothing. Things that are seen don’t last forever, but things that are not seen are eternal. This is why we keep our minds on the things that cannot be seen” (CEV).

You’ve probably heard me say before that you’re not taking your car to heaven. You’re not taking your smartphone and your clothes to heaven. You’re not taking your career to heaven. But you are taking your character. You are taking you.

God is more interested in your character development than in your comfort. Why? Because you’ll have plenty of time to live free from pain and sorrow in heaven, but now is not the time for that; this is the get-ready stage. This is the learning stage. This is the warm-up act. God uses your troubles here on Earth to get you ready for an eternal glory. That’s a comfort.

When you’re in pain, you need to ask, “What is God doing?” Is he trying to get your attention? Is he trying to bring good out of bad? Is he preparing your character for heaven?

No matter what, you can trust that God will use your pain to help you grow.

Es Hora de Limpiar la Casa

“Quitémonos todo peso que nos impida correr, especialmente el pecado que tan fácilmente nos hace tropezar. Y corramos con perseverancia la carrera que Dios nos ha puesto por delante”. Hebreos 12:1 (NTV)

El cambio real requiere limpiar la casa.

Si eres una de esas personas que no pueden encontrar la motivación para limpiar su casa física, entonces limpiar tu casa espiritual puede parecer una tarea más grande. Pero aquí es donde necesitas usar tu mejor energía, porque Dios quiere que pases tu vida haciéndote más como Él. Y volverse más como Él a veces requiere que hagas cambios difíciles.

La Biblia lo dice así: “Quitémonos todo peso que nos impida correr, especialmente el pecado que tan fácilmente nos hace tropezar. Y corramos con perseverancia la carrera que Dios nos ha puesto por delante” Hebreos 12:1 (NTV).

Para decidir qué necesitas limpiar en tu casa espiritual, solo tienes que averiguar qué necesitas cambiar en tu vida. Hazte preguntas como: ¿Qué me frena?

Si deseas tener un cuerpo saludable, tal vez necesites tener alimentos más saludables en tu casa o crear un plan de alimentación. O tal vez necesites comprometerte a hacer ejercicio con regularidad, incluso si comienzas poco a poco con 15 minutos al día.

Si deseas una mente sana, es posible que debas darte de baja de algunas revistas o bloquear algunos canales. Es posible que solo debas eliminar algunas aplicaciones o poner límites más saludables en torno a tu tiempo de pantalla.

Si deseas un horario saludable, debes decidir qué es lo más importante para ti. Luego, puedes eliminar algunas actividades menos importantes, a veces incluso buenas, para que puedas concentrarte más en lo que más te importa.

Si quieres un corazón limpio, entonces necesitas pasar tiempo en oración, pidiéndole a Dios lo que necesitas confesar y luego confesar esas cosas. Este puede ser el paso más difícil de la limpieza espiritual. A través de la confesión, estás reconociendo y erradicando los pecados que causan hábitos poco saludables en toda tu casa espiritual.

La Biblia dice en Efesios 4:22: “Desháganse de su vieja naturaleza pecaminosa y de su antigua manera de vivir, que está corrompida por la sensualidad y el engaño” (NTV).

Es hora de limpiar la casa, pero no es una práctica única. Al igual que tienes que limpiar regularmente tu hogar físico, debes adquirir el hábito de hacer preguntas difíciles para identificar qué habitaciones espirituales necesitan una buena limpieza. Luego, con la bendición de Dios, te pones a trabajar.

God Grows Your Faith Through Prayer

“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.”

Matthew 7:7 (NIV)

God is not only able to meet all of your needs; he’s eager to meet them! But when you forget how committed God is to help you, it’s easy to stop asking for his help and to start depending on yourself.

Perhaps you only ask God for the “big stuff” and not the “small stuff.” Guess what? Everything is small to God. None of your requests are big in God’s eyes. He has every hair on your head numbered, and he knows how many fell out in the sink this morning.

You’re not bothering God when you give him your requests; he’s the one who set up the system of prayer in the first place. That’s why the New Testament tells you more than 20 times to ask for whatever you need in prayer. Matthew 7:7 says, “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you” (NIV).

Sometimes, instead of asking God for something, you just worry about it. But if it’s big enough to worry about, it’s big enough to pray about. Worry won’t solve anything, but prayer will.

God grows your faith and trust the same way a parent teaches a child to trust. The Bible says,
“If you . . . know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give . . . to those who ask him” (Luke 11:13 NLT).

Here’s how it works between a parent and child. First, the child recognizes an unmet need. Second, the child expresses that need. Third, the parent meets that need.

God uses this same cycle to teach you how to trust him: You have an unmet need. You express that unmet need to God. He meets that need, and you learn to trust him more.

If you’re not expressing your needs to God, how can you grow in trust?

When you ask God, he will always prove his goodness. But sometimes you’ll have to wait patiently for God’s timing to deliver. He often does not give immediate answers because he wants to test your faith.

Go ahead—try it today. Take your needs to God in prayer. Then watch for the ways he answers your prayers and meets those needs. You’ll learn to trust that God is reliable and that you can count on him, no matter what.

Para Cambiar Realmente, Tienes que Saber la Verdad

“Hazlos santos con tu verdad; enséñales tu palabra, la cual es verdad”. Juan 17:17 (NTV)

Si quieres ser transformado, no puedes conformarte.

La Biblia dice en 1 Corintios 3:18-19, “Que nadie se engañe. Si alguno de ustedes se cree sabio según las normas de esta época, hágase ignorante para así llegar a ser sabio. Porque a los ojos de Dios la sabiduría de este mundo es locura. Como está escrito: «Él atrapa a los sabios en su propia astucia»” (NVI).

Si quieres que Dios transforme tu vida, entonces tienes que elegir no conformarte con lo que la sociedad y la cultura dicen que debes ser o hacer. Pero no puedes hacer que esta vida cambie por tu propia cuenta.

Cambiar tu vida comienza por cambiar tu forma de pensar, y eso no es algo que puedas hacer por ti mismo. Efesios 4:23 dice: “Dejen que el Espíritu les renueve los pensamientos y las actitudes” (NTV).

¿Cómo hace eso el Espíritu Santo?

El cambio real requiere aprender la verdad. Es posible que ya conozcas estas famosas palabras de Jesús: “Conocerán la verdad, y la verdad los hará libres” Juan 8:32 (NTV).

Pero ¿sabías que la noche antes de que Jesús fuera a la cruz, oró: “Hazlos santos con tu verdad; enséñales tu palabra, la cual es verdad”  Juan 17:17 (NTV).

Dios usa la verdad de su Palabra para hacerte completo.

El secreto del cambio personal no es la fuerza de voluntad. No se trata de hacer resoluciones.

El secreto del cambio personal en las áreas difíciles de tu vida es conocer y aplicar la verdad, que encontrarás en la Palabra de Dios, la Biblia.

Si pasas tiempo en la Palabra de Dios, empapando tu mente con la verdad, la Biblia promete esto: “Así ya no seremos niños, zarandeados por las olas y llevados de aquí para allá por todo viento de enseñanza y por la astucia y los artificios de quienes emplean artimañas engañosas. Más bien, al vivir la verdad con amor, creceremos hasta ser en todo como aquel que es la cabeza, es decir, Cristo. Por su acción todo el cuerpo crece y se edifica en amor, sostenido y ajustado por todos los ligamentos, según la actividad propia de cada miembro” Efesios 4:14-16 (NVI).

Cuanto más conozcas a Jesús, más verdad sabrás. Y te encontrarás superando las mentiras en las que has estado creyendo. Crecerás, cambiarás y te transformarás más a la semejanza de Cristo. Y te darás cuenta de que la verdad realmente te hace libre.

Muchas personas piensan que seguir la Palabra de Dios trae ataduras debido a todas las reglas que tienen que seguir. How to Move From Overwhelmed to Overflowing

“I am the vine, and you are the branches. If you stay joined to me, and I stay joined to you, then you will produce lots of fruit. But you cannot do anything without me.”

John 15:5 (CEV)

It’s better to rest in God’s goodness than to be overwhelmed with work and worry. But it’s also easier said than done. It can be hard to take the steps that lead to rest and the abundant life God has for you.

Here are four daily habits that will help move you from overwhelmed to overflowing.

1. Stay connected to Jesus every day. “I am the vine, and you are the branches. If you stay joined to me, and I stay joined to you, then you will produce lots of fruit. But you cannot do anything without me” (John 15:5 CEV).

If you try to go through life on your own power, you’re going to be overwhelmed. You cannot fulfill your purpose and enjoy God’s goodness unless you’re plugged in to his power.

2. Replace your complaining with gratefulness. “Do everything without complaining and arguing” (Philippians 2:14 NLT).

Complaining is a deeply unhealthy emotion. On the other hand, studies have shown that gratitude is the healthiest emotion. It produces serotonin, dopamine, and oxytocin in your brain; those are the chemicals that boost happiness and lower stress.

3. Stop being stingy, and start being generous. “Bring the full amount of your tithes to the Temple, so that there will be plenty of food there. Put me to the test and you will see that I will open the windows of heaven and pour out on you in abundance all kinds of good things” (Malachi 3:10 GNT).

God wired a universal law into the world: The more you give away, the more you’re going to get. God did that because he wants you to become more like him—and he is a giver.

4. Stop comparing, and start being content. “It is better to be content with what little you have. Otherwise, you will always be struggling for more, and that is like chasing the wind” (Ecclesiastes 4:6 NCV).

Contentment doesn’t mean you don’t have any goals, dreams, or plans for your life. It simply means you don’t need more in order to be happy.

By nature, people are discontent. But by God’s grace, you can rest contently in his goodness to you. When you grasp that most things in your life are simply gracious gifts from God, your life will go from overwhelming to overflowing with God’s abundance.

Talk It Over

One way to stay connected to Jesus is through Bible study. But do you feel overwhelmed when you think about starting a daily Bible study? Start small. How many minutes can you commit to study and prayer each day to get started?
How do you think social media affects your contentment?
For the next few days, make a commitment not to complain about anything. Every time you catch yourself complaining, redirect the complaint into thanks. Each day, note how often you are able to change your gripes to gratitude. What difference does a thankful attitude make?

No te Des por Vencido para Hacer lo Correcto

“No nos cansemos de hacer el bien, porque a su debido tiempo cosecharemos si no nos damos por vencidos”. Gálatas 6:9 (NVI) 

Si las cosas no suceden de inmediato, o cuando crees que deberían suceder, eso no significa que debas renunciar. Necesitas ser diligente y tener resistencia.

La Biblia dice: “No nos cansemos de hacer el bien, porque a su debido tiempo cosecharemos si no nos damos por vencidos” Gálatas 6:9 (NVI).

¿Hay algo en lo que quieras darte por vencido? Tal vez sea tu matrimonio. Parece que está muerto y no va a ninguna parte. Tal vez sea tu carrera. Has intentado, e intentado hacer una diferencia, y simplemente no está sucediendo. Tal vez quisieras darte por vencido con un sueño o una meta, o incluso contigo mismo.

Aquí hay algo importante que debes saber. Mil años antes de que nacieras, Dios sabía que estarías leyendo esto el día de hoy, para que yo pudiera decirte como un amigo, ‘No te des por vencido’.

El túnel puede parecer extremadamente oscuro en este momento, pero siempre hay una luz al final. ¡Puede estar a la vuelta de la esquina! Eres amado por Dios —y tienes un propósito que Dios diseñó exclusivamente para que únicamente tú lo cumplas.

No pienses que lo que estás haciendo no importa. No te des por vencido en hacer lo correcto. No pienses que alguien estaría mejor sin ti. Esas son mentiras de la boca del mismo diablo. Recuerda lo que Dios ha dicho sobre ti. Recuerda que Dios siempre quiere bendecirte.

No te des por vencido. Mira a Dios. Encuentra una familia espiritual, una iglesia y un grupo pequeño, para que te ayude en los momentos difíciles. Medita en la Palabra de Dios para que te de aliento.

Por encima de todo, no renuncies a Dios. ¡Él nunca se dará por vencido contigo!

You Can Relax in God’s Amazing Grace

“[God] knows what we are made of; he remembers that we are dust.”

Psalm 103:14 (GNT)

Your failures don’t surprise God. In fact, he expects them!

The Bible says, “[God] knows what we are made of; he remembers that we are dust” (Psalm 103:14 GNT). He knows what you’re made of because he created you. God won’t stop loving you when you mess up. He doesn’t love you because of who you are or what you’ve done but because of who he is and what he has done.

God made you. He loves you. It’s settled. You can’t make God love you more. You can’t make God love you less. He loves you just as much on your bad days as he does on your good days. His love is not performance-based.

The Bible has a word for this kind of love: grace. And it’s absolutely amazing! Even when you do ridiculously bad things, God won’t stop loving you. It truly is amazing grace. When you accept his grace, you can relax about your failures and have the confidence to take more risks in life.

You may have gone to God multiple times for forgiveness on the same issue. Maybe you’re not sure you deserve his love and grace. (You can settle that now: You don’t.) And you’re convinced that God has grown tired of your constant efforts at change. (He hasn’t.)

God never tires of a conversation with you. He’s never too busy. No matter how many times you go to him for forgiveness, he’ll always be waiting with open arms.

You may have grown up in a home where conditional love was the norm. Your parents’ affections may have been based on your academic, athletic, or social successes. When you failed in one of those areas, you felt the loss of your family’s love.

You can relax. That is not how God deals with you.

The Bible says God “canceled the debt, which listed all the rules we failed to follow. He took away that record with its rules and nailed it to the cross” (Colossians 2:14 NCV).

The Christian life isn’t a mistake-free life, but it can be a guilt-free life. God understands your failures—and he loves you anyway.

That’s God’s amazing grace! It is his goodness to you, and you can rest in it today.

You are saved by the grace of God

We all sin—but God offers his grace and forgiveness. The Bible says you can only get to heaven by trusting in God through his Son, Jesus Christ. You cannot earn your way into heaven: “It is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast” (Ephesians 2:8-9 NIV).

If you’re ready to confess your sins and to trust Jesus with your life, start with this prayer:

“Dear God, you have promised that if I believe in Jesus, everything I’ve ever done wrong will be forgiven, I will learn the purpose of my life, and you will accept me into your eternal home in heaven one day.

“Jesus, I confess my sin, and I submit to you as my Savior and Lord. I want to follow you and serve you; I want to live in your grace and forgiveness, not my own guilt. I humbly commit my life to you and ask you to save me and accept me into your family. In your name I pray. Amen.”

Nuestras Decisiones nos Definen

“Hoy te doy a elegir entre la vida y la muerte, entre el bien y el mal. Hoy te ordeno que ames al Señor tu Dios, que andes en sus caminos, y que cumplas sus mandamientos, preceptos y leyes. Así vivirás y te multiplicarás, y el Señor tu Dios te bendecirá en la tierra de la que vas a tomar posesión”. Deuteronomio 30:15-16 (NVI)  

Ayer hablamos sobre cómo Dios te permite tomar tus propias decisiones. Hoy veremos cómo, una vez que tomas decisiones, tus decisiones te definen.

¿Qué quiero decir con eso? Es fácil pensar que tu vida está definida por lo que te sucede. Pero la verdad es que tu vida está definida por las decisiones que tomas.

Es innegable que las cosas malas suceden todo el tiempo. Vivimos en un mundo imperfecto. No siempre eliges bien. Otras personas no siempre eligen bien. Todos nos lastimamos.

Pero lo que te sucede no es tan importante, como la forma en que eliges responder. Algunas personas crecen a través de situaciones difíciles. Otras personas están destruidas debido a ellas. Para algunas personas, una mala experiencia es un obstáculo. Para otros es un trampolín.

Si tomas a dos personas y los pones exactamente en el mismo dolor, una puede tener éxito mientras que la otra falla. ¿Por qué? Por las elecciones que hacen.

No puedes controlar muchas de las circunstancias de tu vida, pero puedes controlar cómo decides responder. Puedes elegir si las cosas te amargan o te hacen ser mejor.

Piensa en tu futuro. ¿Dónde quieres estar en 10 años? ¿En 20 años?

Sin siquiera conocerte, te puedo decir dónde vas a estar. Sólo dime lo que estás eligiendo en este momento. Las elecciones que hagas hoy determinarán dónde estarás mañana.

La gente sabia siempre está preguntando: ¿Qué necesito hacer hoy para llegar a donde necesito estar mañana?

El libro de Deuteronomio cuenta cómo Dios le dio a su pueblo una opción, una orden para obedecer:  “Así vivirás y te multiplicarás, y el Señor tu Dios te bendecirá” Deuteronomio 30:16 (NVI). Los hijos de Israel harían su elección, y luego sus elecciones los definirían.

Lo mismo es cierto para ti. Dios pone opciones frente a ti todos los días. Lo que hagas con tus elecciones determinará la persona en la que te conviertes.

Piensa en algo difícil que te haya sucedido. ¿Cómo eliges responder?¿Has dejado que tu vida te defina por las cosas malas que te han sucedido? Si es así, ¿cómo puedes elegir cambiar eso?¿Qué opciones crees que Dios te puede estar dando ahora?Si todavía no has confiado en Jesús y no te has comprometido a seguirlo, ¿por qué esperar más? Exchange Your Restlessness for God’s Peace

“It is senseless for you to work so hard from early morning until late at night, fearing you will starve to death; for God wants his loved ones to get their proper rest.”

Psalm 127:2 (TLB)

Did you know that sheep don’t like to lie down? And people are just like them! But if you don’t choose to slow down, God will make you lie down.

Living life God’s way means that you take time to rest. That’s not just a right way to live; it’s also the only healthy way to live.

Psalm 127:2 says, “It is senseless for you to work so hard from early morning until late at night, fearing you will starve to death; for God wants his loved ones to get their proper rest” (TLB).

God wants you to give up your tendency to roam, to wander, to veer off course. Restlessness leads to exhaustion—to physical, emotional, and spiritual fatigue. And you need more than sleep to cure those last two.

One of the Hebrew names of God is Jehovah Shalom, which means “I am the God of peace.” Jesus says in John 14:27, “I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid” (NLT).

If God says he is offering you the gift of peace, then he means it. It’s not something you have to work for. It’s not something you deserve. It’s not something you beg for. It is simply a gift that you must choose to accept, and it’s available to you today.

Here’s a paraphrase of how Jesus said it: “Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly” (Matthew 11:28-30 The Message).

Jesus says that when you follow him, he will lighten your load. You can rest in his promise!

Talk It Over

Having God’s peace does not equal problem-free living. How is it possible to have peace in the midst of your problems?
Taking a nap might be the most spiritual thing you can do today. What keeps you from being able to take the rest you need, even if it is just a short rest?
Confess to God what’s caused you to overwork so that you can be healthy instead of stressed.

Are you ready to find rest in God? The first step toward rest is to make peace with God by accepting Jesus as your Lord and Savior. You can start with this simple prayer:

“Dear God, I don’t want my sin to separate me from you any longer. You have promised that if I believe in Jesus, you’ll forgive me for everything I’ve ever done wrong, you’ll show me the purpose of my life, and you’ll accept me into your family and bring me to heaven one day to live with you for eternity.

“Jesus, I confess my sin, and I believe you are my Savior. I trust you when you say salvation comes by grace, through faith, and not by anything I do. I ask you to come into my life as my Lord. Today, I commit my life to you.

“I want to live the way you created me to live—at peace and rested—and to use the remainder of my life to serve you. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.”

Dios no nos Obliga; Nos Da una Opción

“Hoy te doy a elegir entre la vida y la muerte, entre el bien y el mal. Hoy te ordeno que ames al Señor tu Dios, que andes en sus caminos, y que cumplas sus mandamientos, preceptos y leyes. Así vivirás y te multiplicarás, y el Señor tu Dios te bendecirá en la tierra de la que vas a tomar posesión”. Deuteronomio 30:15-16 (NVI)  

Mucha gente tiene un gran malentendido acerca de Dios. Saben que Dios planeó su existencia y tiene un propósito para sus vidas. Pero tienen la idea equivocada de que cada detalle de la vida está planificado previamente. Ellos piensan que no tienen otra opción.

De hecho, la Biblia enseña exactamente lo contrario. Sí, Dios tiene un plan y un propósito para tu vida, pero no es automático. Te lo puedes perder.

Por eso Dios no te obligará a disfrutar del plan que tiene para ti. Él te da la opción de aceptar o rechazar tu salvación. Te da la opción de obedecer o desobedecer sus instrucciones. Él te da la opción de seguir o ignorar el propósito para el que fuiste creado. Demasiadas personas pierden el propósito de su vida debido a sus malas elecciones.

La Biblia dice repetidamente que Dios no te obligará a hacer Su voluntad.

Cuando Moisés sacó a los judíos de Egipto y los llevó al desierto después de 400 años de esclavitud, les contó acerca de una tierra de leche y miel, una tierra de grandes y abundantes bendiciones, que Dios les había prometido. Sería muy diferente de sus años de esclavitud.

Pero antes de que entraran en la Tierra Prometida, Dios, a través de Moisés, le dijo a la gente lo mismo que él les dijo: “Hoy te doy a elegir entre la vida y la muerte, entre el bien y el mal. Hoy te ordeno que ames al Señor tu Dios, que andes en sus caminos, y que cumplas sus mandamientos, preceptos y leyes. Así vivirás y te multiplicarás, y el Señor tu Dios te bendecirá en la tierra de la que vas a tomar posesión” Deuteronomio 30:15-16 (NVI).  

Dios les estaba dando una opción. Dios quería que su pueblo disfrutara de la generosidad de la Tierra Prometida. Pero no los obligó a aceptarla. La elección fue de ellos.

Esta es una imagen de la salvación, de salir de la esclavitud del pecado a la libertad en Cristo. Para disfrutar la vida en la Tierra Prometida, los israelitas tuvieron que elegir obedecer a Dios. Tú, también, tienes que elegir si vas a aceptar la salvación de Dios y las cosas buenas que ha planeado para ti.

Dios podría haberte hecho un títere, pero no lo hizo. Te da la capacidad de elegir. Si eliges mal, esa elección será tu maldición. Si eliges sabiamente, será tu mayor bendición. Hoy Dios te da una opción entre la vida, elegir la salvación y Su camino, o la muerte. ¿Qué camino vas a elegir?
