Life Is All About Relationships

“I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through him who gives me strength.”

Philippians 4:12-13 (NIV)

Contentment does not come naturally to human beings. By nature, we are restless sheep. Yet we can learn contentment. To learn contentment, we need to stop incessantly grabbing for more.

Philippians 4:12-13 says, “I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through him who gives me strength” (NIV).

If you go to the beach in Southern California, you’ll see some over-the-top, beautiful homes, but the owners are often never around to enjoy them. They’re always at work, making money to pay those massive mortgages. They, like many people around the world, get overwhelmed with the desire to acquire. This desire pushes you to buy something you really can’t afford, like a mortgage that’s over your head. Then you get overextended financially, and then you have to constantly hustle to make ends meet. Soon, you’re emotionally and physically exhausted, and your relationships start to deteriorate. Then you don’t even have a purpose for that fancy home.

The Bible says in Ecclesiastes 4:6, “It is better to have only a little, with peace of mind, than be busy all the time with both hands, trying to catch the wind” (GNT).

The greatest things in life aren’t things.

In America it’s considered a tragedy to “die penniless.” But there’s no better time to go! If you were out of here the moment you spent your last cent, I’d call that wise, not foolish.

Nobody ever asks for things in the final moments of life. They always ask for people, because eventually everyone learns that life is all about relationships. Why not learn that sooner? It sure would relieve a lot of stress.

Life is not about achievements, accomplishments, or acquiring more things.

Life is about relationships.

Necesitas las Promesas de Dios, no las Explicaciones

“Incluso cuando (Abraham) llegó a la tierra que Dios le había prometido, vivió allí por fe, pues era como un extranjero que vive en carpas. Lo mismo hicieron Isaac y Jacob, quienes heredaron la misma promesa”. Hebreos 11:9 (NTV)

En la Biblia, Dios te hizo más de 7000 promesas, pero no ha garantizado que las cumplirá todas al instante.

Como seguidor de Cristo, puedes esperar que Dios a veces pruebe tu fe. Y una de esas pruebas viene cuando las promesas de Dios se retrasan. Yo lo llamo la “Prueba del Cuándo”.

Tú sabes que estás enfrentando la “Prueba del Cuándo” cuando preguntas: “¿Cuándo, Señor? ¿Cuándo vas a responder a mi oración? ¿Cuándo van a cambiar las cosas en mi matrimonio? ¿Cuándo voy a mejorar? ¿Cuándo me voy a graduar? ¿Cuándo voy a tener un bebé? ¿Cuándo voy a conseguir ese ascenso?

Ayer vimos cómo Abraham enfrentó la “Prueba del Dónde”. Pero también fue golpeado por la “Prueba del Cuándo”: “Incluso cuando (Abraham) llegó a la tierra que Dios le había prometido, vivió allí por fe, pues era como un extranjero que vive en carpas. Lo mismo hicieron Isaac y Jacob, quienes heredaron la misma promesa” Hebreos 11:9 (NTV).

Abraham siguió a Dios con fe a un lugar que no conocía. Pero una vez que llegó allí, ni siquiera pudo establecerse.

Durante tres generaciones, Abraham y su familia fueron básicamente nómadas. Aunque Dios había prometido darle Israel a Abraham, lo iba a hacer en su propio horario. Pero Abraham siguió obedeciendo porque confiaba en la promesa que Dios le había hecho.

Dios tiene toda la eternidad para cumplir sus promesas. Eso significa que algunas de sus promesas ni siquiera se van a cumplir en tu vida. Se van a cumplir después de que termine tu vida terrenal.

Por eso Dios quiere que construyas tu vida sobre sus promesas, no sobre sus explicaciones. De hecho, Dios no te debe una explicación de nada en tu vida. Dios es Dios, y tú no lo eres. Quiere que confíes en sus promesas, no que esperes sus explicaciones.

Abraham recibió una gran promesa de Dios: ¡Dios iba a convertirlo en una nación completa! Pero después de que Abraham llegó a Israel y todavía vivía como un nómada, me imagino que constantemente le preguntaba a Dios: “¿Cuándo, Señor? Tú me diste esta promesa. ¿Cuándo vas a cumplirla? ¿Ya es hora?” La familia de Abraham vivió en tiendas de campaña durante tres generaciones, y él era un extranjero en su propio país.

Es posible que estés en una prueba de cuándo en este momento. Has estado esperando una respuesta y parece que no hay final a la vista. Estás preguntando: “¿Cuándo, Señor? ¿Cuándo vas a solucionar este problema? ¿Mi relación? ¿Mis finanzas? ¿Mi salud? ¿Mi futuro?”

Fe significa que esperas el tiempo de Dios, sin saber cuándo.

¿Estás en un momento de espera? No desperdicies la espera. Muéstrale a Dios que confías en Él mientras aprendes y te aferras a sus promesas. Al hacer esto, Dios hará crecer tu carácter y tu fe.

Are You Fasting or Feasting on God’s Word?

“How sweet your words taste to me; they are sweeter than honey.”

Psalm 119:103 (NLT)

After my wife, Kay, and I got engaged, we did something unusual: We moved to opposite sides of the world. She moved to Birmingham, Alabama, to work in an inner-city church, and I moved to Nagasaki, Japan, to plant a church. We were separated for most of our engagement.

In those days, we didn’t have cell phones. It cost $15 a minute to call Japan, and we were dirt poor. So we had only one alternative: writing letters. We each wrote a letter every day, and receiving hers was the highlight of my day during that time. The moment a love letter arrived, I would tear it open and read it. Then I would reread it and try to read between the lines. I’d underline and memorize portions of it. I was trying to gather every drop of love this woman had for me.

What if you read the Bible—God’s love letter to you—that same way?

If you’re not poring over the Bible, trying to glean every bit of wisdom from it, then you are not fully tasting the banquet that God has prepared for you. Psalm 119:103 says, “How sweet your words taste to me; they are sweeter than honey” (NLT).

The Bible is full of nourishment; it has spiritual food that will keep you healthy.

Are you fasting or are you feasting on the Word of God? Keep in mind that going to church once a week and hearing a sermon is not a feast. If you only ate one meal a week, then you wouldn’t grow or be healthy.

Jesus said, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God” (Matthew 4:4 ESV).

You can truly taste the sweetness of God’s Word when you are feeding on it every day—reading it, studying it, and meditating on it—and letting it saturate your heart and mind.

Fe es Seguir sin Saber a Dónde

“Fue por la fe que Abraham obedeció cuando Dios lo llamó para que dejara su tierra y fuera a otra que él le daría por herencia. Se fue sin saber adónde iba” . Hebreos 11:8 (NTV)

A veces, cuando Dios quiere hacer crecer tu fe, te da la “Prueba de dónde”. Si estás preguntando, “¿Dónde, Señor?” y sientes que Dios no está respondiendo, probablemente estés en medio de una “Prueba de Dónde”.

Dios quiere ver si lo seguirás a donde Él te guíe, incluso cuando no entiendas, no quieras ir o no sepas a dónde vas.

Dios usó la “Prueba de Dónde” con Abraham de la Biblia. Hebreos 11:8 dice: “Fue por la fe que Abraham obedeció cuando Dios lo llamó para que dejara su tierra y fuera a otra que él le daría por herencia. Se fue sin saber adónde iba” (NTV).

Abraham vivía en una gran ciudad llamada Ur, que se encuentra en lo que hoy es Irak. Dios le dijo a Abraham que iba a convertirlo en una gran nación. Pero no iba a hacerlo en Ur. Quería que Abraham fuera a Palestina. Y Abraham obedeció.

¿Abraham quería ir? Probablemente no. Estaba instalado en su casa con su familia, su hogar y sus animales, y eran muchos, porque Abraham era un hombre rico. Ese tipo de movimiento habría sido una empresa enorme en ese día.

Abraham también tenía 75 años, no es realmente la edad en la que buscas comenzar tu mayor aventura en la vida.

Te mudarías si Dios te dijera: “No te voy a decir a dónde vas, cuánto tiempo vas a tardar, dónde vas a terminar o cómo va a ser. Solo confía en mí”.

Abraham, por fe, obedeció a Dios. Dejó su casa y se fue a otra tierra. Pasó la “Prueba de Dónde”. ¿Pasarías la misma prueba?

Tal vez estés en la “Prueba de Dónde” en este momento. Sabes que debes renunciar a tu trabajo, pero no sabes a dónde debes ir. Dios quiere que vendas tu casa, pero es donde has hecho tus recuerdos familiares. Es posible que ni siquiera te haya dicho dónde se supone que debes mudarte.

Dios está probando tu carácter. Él quiere que muestres y aumentes tu fe a medida que le obedeces, ya sea que sepas o no a dónde vas.

Hebreos 11 continúa diciendo acerca de Abraham: “Incluso cuando llegó a la tierra que Dios le había prometido, vivió allí por fe, pues era como un extranjero que vive en carpas. Lo mismo hicieron Isaac y Jacob, quienes heredaron la misma promesa. Abraham esperaba con confianza una ciudad de cimientos eternos, una ciudad diseñada y construida por Dios” Hebreos 11:9-10 (NTV).

Vivirás toda tu vida por fe; no importa a dónde te lleve Dios, ningún lugar en la Tierra es tu hogar para siempre. Pero puedes confiar en las promesas de Dios para ti. Y puedes esperar tu hogar eterno con Él.

God’s Guidance Won’t Leave You Confused

“Your road led through the sea, your pathway through the mighty waters—a pathway no one knew was there!”

Psalm 77:19 (NLT)

The Bible says God actively works through your circumstances. But you cannot judge your situation apart from God’s wisdom. In other words, you must leave it up to God to interpret your circumstances. Only he is capable of understanding all the facts, and only he sees the significance of every detail. That’s why it is so important that you test it all by his Word.

If you feel overwhelmed or confused about a decision, it might be because you’re so caught up in in your own, limited way of thinking, that it blocks out God’s voice. The Bible says, “God is not a God of disorder but of peace” (1 Corinthians 14:33 NIV). He is not the author of confusion. So if you’re feeling confused, guess what? It’s not God’s voice speaking in your life.

There will be times you come up against enormous financial, spiritual, or physical barriers. That’s when you need to confess, “God, there are mountains on either side and an impassable barrier in front of me.” And then you wait for God to respond and assure you that he’s got you exactly where he wants you to be. He will make a pathway where there seems to be no way.

Psalm 77:19 says, “Your road led through the sea, your pathway through the mighty waters—a pathway no one knew was there!” (NLT)

When you don’t know what to do, God will guide you. He didn’t design you to go through life on your own ingenuity and power. You don’t have to just hope you can figure things out.

God wants to lead you on the right path, and he will do that when you surrender to him and his guidance.

El Cambio Real Requiere Fe

“Que toda la gloria sea para Dios, quien puede lograr mucho más de lo que pudiéramos pedir o incluso imaginar mediante su gran poder, que actúa en nosotros”. Efesios 3:20 (NTV)

Durante los últimos días hemos analizado juntos cómo lograr un cambio real en tu vida. El cambio real requiere conocer la verdad de Dios, limpiar tu casa espiritual y una comunidad honesta. Y, como todo lo relacionado con el crecimiento espiritual, el cambio real requiere fe.

En otras palabras, tienes que creer que puedes cambiar, con la ayuda de Dios.

¿Cómo te ayuda Dios a cambiar? Hay dos formas principales. Él puede transformarte por su Espíritu viviendo en ti y con su Palabra, la Biblia.

Efesios 3:20 dice: “Que toda la gloria sea para Dios, quien puede lograr mucho más de lo que pudiéramos pedir o incluso imaginar mediante su gran poder, que actúa en nosotros” (NTV).

¿Qué es lo más grande que quieres cambiar en tu vida? No importa cuán grande sea, no es demasiado grande para Dios.

Tal vez hayas intentado y no hayas podido hacer el cambio por tu cuenta. Eso es porque nunca debiste tratar de cambiar solo. Tu cambias con el poder de Dios. ¿Y cómo obtienes el poder de Dios? A través de la fe. Dios suministra su poder en respuesta a tu fe en Él.

Filipenses 4:13 es un versículo familiar, pero la Biblia Palabra de Dios para Todos lo dice de una manera que quizás no hayas escuchado antes: “Puedo enfrentar cualquier situación porque Cristo me da el poder para hacerlo” (PDT).

Con el poder de Jesucristo, puedes hacer todo lo que Dios te ha llamado a hacer. Su poder fue infundido en ti cuando te convertiste en su seguidor.

Si deseas cambiar, entonces necesitas una actitud positiva, no un gran ego sobre lo que puedes hacer, sino una gran fe en lo que Dios puede lograr en ti y a través de ti.

Jesús dijo en Mateo 9:29: “Debido a su fe, así se hará” (NTV).

Puedes elegir cuánto cambias. Puedes elegir cuánto bendice Dios tu vida. Tienes que creer con fe que Dios puede ayudarte a hacer los cambios difíciles.

Stop Following a Culture That Doesn’t Follow God

“Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.”

Romans 12:2 (NLT)

There are two verses in the Bible that are written by the same author but seem to send opposite messages:

1 John 2:15 says, “Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them” (NIV). That’s pretty clear!

But John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world . . .” (NIV). That looks like a big contradiction right there.

“The world” is used two ways in these verses. The first verse refers to the world’s value system, and the second refers to the world’s people. Followers of Jesus are to love people, no matter what choices they make. On the other hand, we are to hate the world’s value system, including things like status, selfishness, and sexual immorality.

The problem is that we often get it reversed. We love the value system and hate the people. Christians do this all the time. Instead of being different, we’re often just as materialistic and hedonistic as the culture we live in. But that’s backwards from how God calls us to live.

For the rest of your life, you’ll face great pressure to conform to the culture. This was Israel’s biggest problem for thousands of years. They wanted to be like other nations. Yet God gave them all kinds of moral, civil, and ceremonial laws to make them different on purpose.

God has done the same for you and me. We don’t live under Old Testament Law, but God has told us exactly how we should live and how to get the wisdom and power to stand out in this world: “Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect” (Romans 12:2 NLT).

One reason you may not know what God wants you to do in life is because you may be too assimilated to your culture. Often this happens without you realizing it. But you can’t think like the world and think like God thinks. You have to make a choice.

The problem with following culture is that it’s all temporary. You need to follow something that is eternal: God’s Word.

Fill your mind with God’s truth, and let it transform your life by changing what you love.

Talk It Over

What cultural norms that are part of your life actually contradict God’s Word?
If you’re having trouble thinking of ways that you’ve become assimilated to secular culture, write down several areas of your life (family, career, church involvement, etc.) and the top five values that drive you in each area. In what ways are those values based on what culture values or what God’s Word says you should value?
What is it about temporary things that feel so satisfying in the short-term?

Will you follow Jesus today?

The world is pressuring you to devote your life to temporary things. But you were created for something greater, to do things that will have meaning in eternity. Living God's way starts with trusting him for salvation. The Bible says, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16 NIV).

Will you trust God for forgiveness and eternal life? Pray this simple prayer: “Dear God, I believe Jesus Christ is your Son. I confess I have sinned, and I ask for your forgiveness. I believe Jesus died to take away my sins and that you raised him to life. I want to trust Jesus as my Savior and follow Him as Lord, from this day forward. Guide my life and help me to do your will. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.”

¿Por Qué Necesitas un Mentor?

“Me has oído enseñar verdades, que han sido confirmadas por muchos testigos confiables. Ahora enseña estas verdades a otras personas dignas de confianza que estén capacitadas para transmitirlas a otros”. 2 Timoteo 2:2 (NTV)

Incluso las super-estrellas necesitan entrenadores. Los mejores cantantes del mundo tienen entrenadores para la voz y los mejores atletas olímpicos tienen entrenadores. Los principales directores ejecutivos tienen entrenadores de negocios. Los entrenadores te ayudan a maximizar tus fortalezas y minimizar tus debilidades.

Este principio de entrenamiento o tutoría se encuentra en toda la Biblia. Josué fue apadrinado por Moisés. Eliseo fue entrenado por Elías. Salomón fue tutelado y entrenado por David, y David fue tutelado por Samuel.

El apóstol Pablo fue mentor y entrenador de Timoteo y muchas otras personas. Pablo dice en 2 Timoteo 2:2: “Me has oído enseñar verdades, que han sido confirmadas por muchos testigos confiables. Ahora enseña estas verdades a otras personas dignas de confianza que estén capacitadas para transmitirlas a otros” (NTV). Pablo fue mentor de Timoteo, y luego esperaba que Timoteo saliera y fuera mentor de hombres fieles que luego serían mentores y entrenadores de otros hombres fieles.

Dios espera lo mismo de los hombres y mujeres fieles de hoy, porque así es como creces en el discipulado. De hecho, en este momento te estás beneficiando de los entrenadores espirituales que me han guiado a lo largo de mi vida, que me ayudaron a crecer en diferentes áreas de mi vida.

La Biblia dice que Dios ha dado cinco clases diferentes de “entrenadores” para su iglesia. Todos esos entrenadores están trabajando con un propósito específico: “Él mismo constituyó a unos, apóstoles; a otros, profetas; a otros, evangelistas; y a otros, pastores y maestros, a fin de capacitar al pueblo de Dios para la obra de servicio, para edificar el cuerpo de Cristo. De este modo, todos llegaremos a la unidad de la fe y del conocimiento del Hijo de Dios, a una humanidad perfecta que se conforme a la plena estatura de Cristo” Efesios 4:11-13 (NVI).

¿Captaste el propósito por el que están trabajando estos diferentes entrenadores? Están trabajando “para que su gente aprenda. . . y . . . crezca fuerte”. Si quieres aprender, crecer y ser fuerte, entonces necesitas un mentor.

Un mentor es un amigo espiritualmente maduro y un compañero de responsabilidad que se vuelve real contigo y señala el pecado y la debilidad, al mismo tiempo que alienta tus fortalezas y crecimiento. Te ayudan a permanecer en el camino del propósito de Dios para ti.

Si te tomas en serio aprovechar al máximo tu vida, entonces necesitas un entrenador o mentor que te ayude a cumplir tu propósito. No tienen que ser perfectos. Solo tienen que estar un paso por delante de ti. Y, a medida que creces espiritualmente, ¡puedes ser un mentor para otra persona!

¿Te resulta difícil pensar en alguien que podría ser un mentor para ti? ¿Cómo puedes rodearte más de personas que están al menos un paso por delante de ti en la fe?¿Cuáles son algunos de sus miedos acerca de tener un mentor? ¿Qué crees que Dios quiere que hagas con esos temores?Pasa un minuto en oración ahora mismo. Pídele a Dios que te ayude a dar el siguiente paso para encontrar un mentor. Every one of us has a good reason to feel guilt. Not one does everything right! We hurt other people. We act selfishly. Often the unkindest things we say and do are to the people we love the most.

Just like you can’t hide your sins from God, you can’t hide your guilt from him either. Not only that, but when you try to cover up your guilty feelings, they start to eat at you on the inside.

Only one thing works to get rid of guilt: Confess your sins, and trust in God’s forgiveness. The word “confession” in the Bible in Greek is homologeo. Homo means “same.” Logeo means “to speak.” So confession simply means to agree with God: “You’re right, God. I was wrong.”

Everything you’re going to do wrong—including the stuff you’re going to do tomorrow, next week, and 10 years from now—has already been paid for. That is the goodness of God.

Jesus takes all your guilt on himself. He gives you his goodness—his righteousness. This is the most basic, fundamental truth of the Bible: Your broken soul becomes whole again in him.

The Bible says in Isaiah 53:5-6, “But He was pierced for our offenses, He was crushed for our wrongdoings . . . All of us, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; but the Lord has caused the wrongdoing of us all to fall on Him” (NASB).

If you don’t feel forgiven, it means you don’t fully understand God’s goodness. When Jesus died, he covered all your sins, threw them into the deepest part of the sea, and put up a “No Fishing” sign.

Confess your sin to God. And because he forgives and forgets your sin, you’ll have no need to drag it out again.

Talk It Over

What are some common but unhealthy ways people try to handle guilt?

Why is joy a natural result of understanding God’s grace?

The answer to your guilt is not to hide it; it’s to confess what you’ve done.

The Bible says, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9 CSB). And it also says that you cannot earn your way into heaven: “It is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast” (Ephesians 2:8-9 NIV).

If you’re ready to confess your sins and to trust Jesus with your life, start with this prayer:

“Dear God, I know I’m a sinner, and I ask for your forgiveness. I believe Jesus Christ is your Son. I believe that he died for my sin and that you raised him to life. Jesus, I want to trust you as my Savior and follow you as Lord from this day forward. I accept your free gift of salvation. Guide my life, and help me to do your will. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.”

El cambio real requiere una comunidad honesta.

Hay algunas cosas que nunca podrás cambiar por tu cuenta. Necesitarás personas en tu vida que te apoyen, específicamente, un grupo pequeño de personas que sean transparentes y auténticas contigo.

A veces, en un partido de fútbol, un jugador es tan grande que ningún jugador contrario puede derribarlo por sí solo. De la misma manera, algunos de los desafíos de tu vida deben abordarse en equipo.

Ahí es cuando necesitas un grupo pequeño, pero no cualquier grupo de personas. Tu  grupo pequeño debe estar formado por algunas personas con las que puedas hablar sobre tus debilidades y problemas, todas tus heridas, hábitos y complejos.

Ese tipo de intimidad no sucede de inmediato. Cuando empiezas un grupo pequeño por primera vez, te reúnes regularmente. Luego, con el tiempo, comienzan a confiar el uno en el otro y desarrollan un entorno seguro. Esas personas se convierten en amigos que pueden ayudarte a cambiar cuando no puedes cambiar por tu cuenta.

Cuando finges ser alguien que en realidad no eres, desperdicias una enorme cantidad de energía.

Es posible que desees sinceramente crecer en Cristo y trabajar en tus debilidades. Pero para hacer eso, tienes que ser honesto con tu pequeño grupo acerca de quién eres realmente. Ese tipo de honestidad es esencial para el cambio espiritual. Si pudieras cambiar por tu cuenta, lo harías, pero no puedes, así que no lo haces. ¡Necesitas a otras personas!

Una cosa que impide que la mayoría de la gente sea honesta es su deseo de verse bien ante los demás. Su deseo de verse bien ante los demás a menudo tiene prioridad sobre ser bueno. Y se convierte en un obstáculo para el crecimiento espiritual.

Pero en un grupo pequeño de otros creyentes, estás a salvo solo para ser tú mismo. Luego, pueden crecer juntos y hacer los cambios difíciles que no podrían hacer solos.
